Seattle Seahawks team needs
Win now or rebuild? The management for the Seattle Seahawks seems to be stuck on this question. Back to back poor season should answer the question for them but their actions seem to suggest they want to win now (passing on Sanchez and signing TJ Houshmanzadeh). This draft will be greatly affected by the direction Pete Carroll wants to go. There should be at least 1 quarterback left when they pick at # 6. But does management see quarterback as a top need? Here is the direction I feel the Seahawks should go.
1. Tackle
- Will Walter Jones retire? If I am Pete Carroll I would focus on a tackle either way. Jones is aging and Ray Willis is not a starting caliber tackle. Seattle can hope that Russell Okung falls to them at pick #6 or they could reach for one of the other tackles. Luckily, Seattle also owns the 14th pick where we might see the second run on offensive linemen.
2. Quarterback
- Hasselbeck has been injury prone the last few years which has exposed the weaknesses of Seneca Wallace. Picking in the top 8 the last two years should tell management that they are rebuilding and maybe it’s time to find their future quarterback. Both Jimmy Clausen and Sam Bradford could be available at pick #6.
3. Running back
- Julius Jones has proved that he is nothing more than a complementary back and the same could be said for Justin Forsett. Forsett has shown some promise but the coaches don’t seem to trust him, which is explained by his lack of carries late in the season. The Seahawks offense needs some speed and playmaking ability.

WIN NOW? That is a pipe dream for the Seahawks.
The last two years have shown that the Seahawks have numerous deficiencies in their roster and are a long way from returning to the playoffs. You don’t finish 4-12 and 5-11 because of a few injuries and or poor coaching/scheme.
Few injuries?
You should think long and hard about your choice of words there.
However, injuries were not the only factor.
Talents that I covet:
Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Sam Bradford, Mike Iupati, Golden Tate, Earl Thomas, and Freddie Barnes

I would add that lack of a pass rush
exposed an undersized secondary. Finding a pass rush is a must if the defense is going to turn the corner finally. Kerney is done and Jackson is finding out that bull rushing is different in the NFL than it was in college. Tapp put on too much weight in an attempt to become more effective against the run and has suffered.
Derrick Morgan or Eversen Griffen could be options at some point.
Bring Your Game, Leave Your Name.
How important is finding an elite pass-rusher?
John Morgan made a good point about any pass-rusher having trouble when playing from behind. And remember the Super Bowl team? The Seahawks led the league in sacks with 50 despite not having a SINGLE player having over 9 sacks.
In my opinion, I’d invest as much resources as possible into the offense and the defense will improve on it’s own.
Holmgren would have drafted Crabtree.

Forsett
little FYI Justin Forsett went for 164 yrs against Pete C’s USC team his Sr year
wait on a QB
Pete Carroll said after facing Washington,. that Jake Locker was the best QB he has faced since arriving at USC. most of us laughed, since Vince Young single handedly beat his team of the century, and chalked it up to giving props to his ex coordinator and current huskies head coach Steve Sarkesian……but I expect seattle to wait and draft Locker next yr, or Matt Barkley in a few yrs, none of this yrs QBs are his type
Hawks have more pressing needs on the Defense that need to be addressed before RB
Iverson2169 is correct; they lack a pass rush. Their secondary is also weak. Both units have had injuries and consist of aging formerly solid contributers. I wouldn’t mind seeing Forsett back next year at starter if it meant the Hawks filled the holes on Defense rather than looking for another RB to replace Julius Jones. I also have to wonder, though, if a lot of their defensive ineptitude was due to poor schemes, lack of understanding of talent by the coaching staff, or players not fully picking up schemes.
The Seahawks definitely lack a pass rush
which was why other teams were able to walk all over the Hawks’ secondary. Last year, the Seahawks ran a Tampa 2 which requires an elite pass rusher (a la Dwight Freeny in Indy). I believe the Seahawks’ defense was flawed because of its scheme and the new DC has to come up with unique blitzes that better adapt to the talent. Instead of drafting someone like Derrick Morgan, the Seahawks need to come up with a new defensive scheme
In my ideal draft the Hawks draft a QB at 6 (Bradford or Clausen) and an offensive playmaker (Spiller) at 14. With the 40th pick, the Seahawks take a tackle that can eventually develop into a starter.
(This is obviously subject to change depending on how well players do in Senior Bowl, Combine, etc.)
They should get QB
Hasselback is getting up there in age and they got a new HC Pete Carrol
they should mos def get a QB
Bradford looks like he’s gunna be a good NFL QB
he reminds me of Tom Brady
Teams needing O-Line need to stick to that plan
no matter who is the QB he needs protection. The Hawks can find a non-first-round gem at QB if they don’t want to risk bust-i-tude. Pike, Canfield, LeFevour… but I wouldn’t wait. Wallace is a spot duty backup type. Besides they need to groom their QBOTF not get him and throw him into the lineup. I know guys have had success doing that lately but it’s not ideal.
"Vernon is going to be a great tight end one day, but he's got to put the whole package together." - Thanks Sing for echoing this.
Seattle will have Zone Blocking wizard Alex Gibbs as the new O-line coach.
I doubt they’ll pick O-line in the first round; Gibbs will probably influence the new GM to try for a mid-rounder who he can coach up.
"Mid round gem at QB" That is an oxymoron if I ever heard one.
Trying to get a mid round QB to eventually take over your team is fine if you have Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, or Brett Favre in their prime. But doing it when you have a real issue at QB is just wasting a mid round draft pick.
Seattle needs to do something at QB very soon. They have an extra first round draft pick this year and select sixth in the first round. IMO they would be crazy to bypass a near franchise QB. Whether it is Clausen or Bradford [if he is healthy and shows he is completely recovered].
Exactly
And then pick up someone to help the QB. Either Spiller as an offensive playmaker or an OT to protect the QB

Disagree slightly
As a Seahawks fan it might surprise people to hear this – but our biggest need is probably on the defensive line. We have nothing in terms of a pass rush – Kerney is done and dusted. Quarterback and tackle are both needs but neither are strong enough to justify at #6. Okung and Clausen are just flat out over rated. Running back and receiver are also greatly needed.
In my first post I adressed that
The Seahawks definitely lack a pass rush, but I think that was more because of the scheme that Mora and Bradley implemented last year. If Mora and the new DC can come up with a scheme that is better adapted to the current Seahawks D-line (solid all around with no elite pass-rushers), I believe the Seahawks pass rush will be fixed.
And why do you think Clausen and Okung are overrated? I’ve heard varying things.

We need a pass rusher
Kerney is awful now and Tapp may not even be on the team next year. Maybe we look at Derrick Morgan but there aren’t too many pass rushers I see in the early rounds that impress me.
QB is a must because it will force Hasselbeck to earn his starting job. You would have to be really bad to not beat Hasselbeck at this point.
Offensive line is obvious. Don’t need a dominant left tackle, just a good-to-great one.
Running back is a need. I’m sold on CJ Spiller.
This team has a lot of needs. Holy crap.
Matt Hasselbeck's satellite TV signals would get intercepted.
Mmm, copypasta

In my opinion, I’d invest as much resources as possible into the offense and the defense will improve on it’s own. Or, switch to 3-4 and cut this BS about trying to have an elite D while remaining 4-3, because it’s fairly obvious that does not work anymore in the modern NFL.
Holmgren would have drafted Crabtree.
