Mock Draft 1.1
1. St. Louis- DT- Ndamukon Suh- Neb
- I am sticking to my guns and saying the Rams cannot and will not pass up Suh. The Rams are nowhere near competing so they will be picking in the top 5 again next year where quarterbacks like Jake Locker and Ryan Mallet will be available. The Rams know what they are getting with Suh and will risk that a quarterback will be available next season.
2. Detroit- DT- Gerald McCoy- Okl
- Missing out on Suh will be a big disappointment for the Lions but McCoy will be a nice addition to a terrible Lions defense. Some will argue that Berry is the better player but the Lions really need help along the defensive front. Having a safety tandem of Berry and Delmas is a luxury this poor Lions team just can’t have.
3. Tampa Bay- S- Eric Berry- Tenn
- Berry moves up two spots in my latest mock draft. The recent arrest of Jermaine Phillips leaves a hole at the safety position. I still think Derrick Morgan is in play here and depending on combine numbers could be moved back into this spot. However, it will be tough for the Bucs to pass on a talent like Eric Berry.
4. Washington- OT- Russell Okung- Okl St
- Shanahan will be tempted to take the sexy pick with either Clausen or Bradford but he knows that a strong offensive line is the key to a good offense. Shanahan has made due with quarterbacks like Jake Plummer so maybe Jason Campbell sticks around. However, look for the Redskins to add a quarterback later in the draft.
5. Kansas City- CB- Joe Haden- Fla
- The Chiefs main need is on the defensive side of the ball and the secondary is arguably the weakest position. Joe Haden can step right in and be a good cover corner which will help the defense tremendously.
6. Seattle- OT- Anthony Davis- Rut
- The athletic Davis is going to really impress teams with his workouts. His has a lot of upside and offensive line is a major need for Seattle. Pete Carroll may want to take a chance on Jimmy Clausen but it seems unlikely. Carroll didn’t come back to the NFL to struggle with a rookie quarterback.
7. Cleveland- RB- CJ Spiller- Clem
- Cleveland has more than a few holes to fill but a playmaker on offense is a major need. Jerome Harrison had a good end to the season but is he really the answer at running back? CJ Spiller brings a lot of speed to this offense, speed they may need to replace if they are forced to trade Josh Cribbs. This might be a little high for Spiller but my prediction is that he is going to post huge numbers at the combine which will sky rocket his stock.
8. Oakland- DE- Derrick Morgan- Ga Tech
- Oakland can use help on the offensive line but they could also benefit from a better pass rush. Morgan has the ability to provide that rush and also play well against the run. I really think that the smart pick would be Jimmy Clausen but Al Davis is not ready to give up on JaMarcus Russell. Again don’t discount Davis’s commitment to Russell which might lead to the Raiders reaching on an offensive lineman.
9. Buffalo- QB- Jimmy Clausen- ND
- Fitzpatrick and Brohm are not the long term solution at the position. A left tackle would be a nice pick but there are not worthy of the #9 pick. Clausen will immediately be the best quarterback on the roster and could start from day 1. This might be a little low for the first quarterback to come off the board but injuries (Clausen-toe, Bradford-shoulder) are going to limit the quarterbacks’ chances of impressing at workouts. While players like Price, Haden, Morgan, and Davis will all see their stock rise due to being able to display their athletic ability.
10. (X) Denver(from Chicago)- QB- Sam Bradford- Okl
- Kyle Orton had a nice season but he is not the future quarterback for this team. Bradford fits McDaniel’s system. McDaniel’s offense is all about precision and runs a lot of shotgun sets, which are both strong suits for Bradford.
11. (X) Jacksonville- DE- Jason Pierre-Paul- UCF
- Jacksonville missed with Derrick Harvey and Quenton Groves but they still need a pass rush and will hope Pierre-Paul could provide this. Jacksonville has proved in the past that they will go with need over best available. If the Jags win the coin toss and pick before Denver they will still go with Pierre-Paul. Coach Del Rio is in a win now mode and a quarterback of the future doesn’t provide that.
12. Miami- WR- Dez Bryant- Okl St
- Dez will be the playmaker Ted Ginn Jr. is not. Having someone to stretch the field and make plays in the passing game will really open things up for Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams.
13. San Francisco- S- Earl Thomas- Tex
- Coach Singletary will fight the urge to go with hard hitting Taylor Mays but in the end he will see Thomas is much more of a playmaker. Thomas is much better in the passing game where San Francisco needs a lot of help.
13. San Francisco- S- Earl Thomas- Tex
- Coach Singletary will fight the urge to go with hard hitting Taylor Mays but in the end he will see Thomas is much more of a playmaker. Thomas is much better in the passing game where San Francisco needs a lot of help.
14. Seattle(from Denver)- DE- Carlos Dunlap- Fla
- Dunlap’s off the field issues will be overshadowed by his combine numbers. Seattle’s defense needs help along the front line. Dunlap has all the ability to provide a devastating pass rush.
15. New York Giants- LB- Rolando McClain- Ala
- How lucky are the Giants? McClain is a top 10 talent that slips to # 15 because middle linebacker is not a major need of the teams ahead of them. McClain takes over for Antonio Pierce, who’s injury and legal troubles will force him out of New York.
16. (X) San Francisco (from Carolina)- OT- Trent Williams- Okl
- Trent Williams slid to #16 because he may never develop into a left tackle. But this is not an issue for the 49ers who have Joe Staley at left tackle and will use Trent Williams at right tackle where he could be dominate.
17. (X) Tennessee- DT- Brian Price- UCLA
- Tennessee is still searching for a replacement for Big Albert and while Price is not Albert, it’s a start. The Titians struggled in with pass defense so CB Patrick Robinson is also an option here.
18. Pittsburg- DT- Dan Williams- Tenn
- Pittsburg may need a replacement for NT Casey Hampton and Williams has the size to play the Nose tackle position.
19. (X) Atlanta- CB- Patrick Robinson-Fla St.
- Atlanta needs help at the corner position and Robinson is going rise after the combine results. Anyone that could run down Noel Devine is really fast. Not only is Robinson fast he can also cover and support in the running game.
20. (X) Houston- S- Taylor Mays
- Houston has some need in the secondary and Mays could provide another building block to this improving Texans defense.
21. Cincinnati- WR- Arrelious Benn- Ill
- It was obvious that Cincinnati is in need of some speed at the wide out position. Losing Chris Henry has really exposed the lack of depth at the position. The coaching staff is losing faith in both Coles and Caldwell after their issues with fumbles. Benn will benefit from Carson Palmer throwing him passes rather than Juice Williams.
22. New England- LB- Sergio Kindle- Tex
- Kindle had a good national championship game and may see his stock rise more after the combine. New England needs some young talent at the Linebacker position and a replacement for Adialius Thomas, whom has likely played his last game as a Patriot. Kindle goes ahead of Navarro Bowman in this situation because his pass rush abilities fit the Patriots scheme.
23. Green Bay- OT- Bryan Bulaga- Iowa
- Offensive line help is the biggest need for Green Bay and Bulaga offers a viable option. Aaron Rodgers is hoping that Bulaga can help keep the likes of Jared Allen off of his back.
24. Philadelphia- LB- Navarro Bowman
- Philadelphia needs help at the safety and linebacker positions and Bowman is the best available at either position.
(X)- To be determined by a coin flip

QBs?
I have a hard time seeing Washington passing on Clausen, but if they do I have a harder time seeing Seattle passing on him. Seattle can take Clausen and still get a OT with their next pick. I will agree that both the top QBs are gone by the time Jacksonville picks. If this draft scenario is correct it will certainly put Seattle in the cat birds seat for teams wanting to move up to grab a QB.
I just can’t see Cleveland not getting pass rush help instead of a RB although I like your logic.
I have seen Parcels draft for many years. If he passed over McClain for a WR it will be the first sign of the next apocalypse. Even if he didn’t need a ILB he would take McClain. Its just the way Parcell’s is constructed.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
I disagree with the Spiller selection logic.
Putting him this high because Cribbs is upset and Spiller will run a great 40?
Cribbs is a proven NFL commodity and will be happy again with a contract that will be less than half of what they would pay Spiller. Harrison looks like a solid NFL RB with support from Cribbs and they do have James Davis coming off the IR. Another third or fourth round pick at RB would more than solidify this position for the Browns.
Cleveland have to upgrade their WRs, O line [they have two great players in Thomas and Mack], and their secondary. While the #7 pick is too early for a Right Tackle or WR [in this draft] I think that Haden or Berry will be available here. Most likely Haden.
In your scenario, I see the Browns trading down to give a team the first shot at Clausen.
I do agree. I do NOT see them taking spiller just for his return skills. that is not something worth taking that high. as a back, he will not even be a ton better than harrison. I do agree with you assessment of needs. I do think that haden will be there and will be a great pickup. if he and berry are gone, I would go to Rolando McClain. He is easily a top 10 talent and I think that guys like veikune and Trusnik are nothing more than backups right now. every 3-4 has an impact Linebacker with size and speed that makes plays (james farrior, ray lewis, patrick willis, Nick barnett) and all of those guys were first rounders with talent. if neither DB is available I would go ILB route…because the only first rounders on the line are pass blocking LTs which we don’t need and there is only one receiver I like…If we trade down to maybe around 20, I wouldn’t mind it, so we could take damian williams. then we get an extra second and beef up our secondary and O-Line.
Cribbs isn’t going anywhere, and I doubt we go with McClain. Haden would be a better bet.
Trusnick is actually not bad at all.

Calling the selection of a QB a "sexy" pick is not right.
The sexy pick is the player of the moment, who at this time is Mr. Suh. The good thing about the all star games, combines, work outs, and interview process is that it gives teams the chance to pause and reflect on what players will add the maximum long term value to their franchise.
Once this is done I believe that the Rams and Seahawks will both look at QBs for their first picks.
Also, Bradford has much more at stake than Clausen in the work outs and combines. Clausen played all of 2009 with this toe injury and put up sterling numbers. Bradford sat out nearly all of 2009 with a throwing shoulder injury. Bradford still has to prove that he can make all the throws. Clausen made all the throws. His surgery would have to be totally botched [lose a few toes?] to impact his throwing.
I guess you are assuming that Bradford’s surgery will go well and he will be completely healed and back to near 2008 performance to have him ranked so close to Clausen. Those are very big assumptions in my mind.
It would be very surprising if KC takes a cornerback with the #5 pick
They do need help with the Safety position, but the corners are solid. The run defense was awful. The pick will almost certainly be Berry, McClain or an OT.
Predictions:
Kansas City will not win more than four games in 2009
Kansas City will have a new OC and DC in 2010
Kansas City will win at least seven games in 2010
I agree. Their corners are both going into their third seasons.
They were pretty good in 2009 and I would be shocked if KC used that pick on Haden.
Having said that, your scenario leaves KC in a tough position. I don’t know if Campbell/Davis or Dez Bryant are worth the fifth pick in the draft.
I hate to be a broken record, but they would really benefit by trading down with someone who wants Clausen or Bradford.
KC's CBs are not solid at all
There is a pretty good chance they would take Haden. They need a CB more than a LT according to Haley himself. Brandon Carr has not been good this year. He is constantly beat and doesnt get his head around. Haley was not happy with Carr at all so CB isnt a nad pick. Also, Pioli would probably take Haden over McClain.

Brandon Flowers is a megastud.
Holmgren would have drafted Crabtree.

No CB is worth the #5 pick...
The secondary would get a break if there was a decent pass rush. I would not see someone like Haden going over McClain. McClain would have more value for the Chiefs. He would help the run DEF and is just overall a smart player and a team leader, which the DEF does not have currently. A decent CB could be picked up in later rounds, but no other LB in the draft has McClain’s smarts. I agree Carr wasn’t that great at times, but I still don’t see a CB going #5. I would be really surprised by that. I really think the Chiefs will take McClain. Add him inside with DJ and then having Hali on the outside and the combo ov Vrabel/Studebaker wouldn’t be a bad LB core.
Deion was a #5 pick
just sayin.
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
I’d have taken Revis or Asomugha or Bailey or Woodson with the #5 pick if I knew what they would turn into. You’re talking about cornerstones there.

They may not be solid
But they aren’t going to reach on a CB at #5. That’s lunacy even if Deion went that high. One in a million CB and I don’t think Haden is Deion.

haden could be a safety. he is much better in zone coverage than he is in man. plus, with 10 pounds on his frame, he is polamalu without the hair.
I don’t know why you keep acting like Haden has to switch to safety. He is better in man than any other corner in the draft.

Dolphins pick
No way Parcells and co pass on McClain if he’s there with their 1st pick. I even see Miami trading in front of Denver to get him unless the Giants do so first.
I totally agree
McClain is a Dolphin if he hits #12. I expect Miami to address WR via free agency, not the draft.

you must be a Giants’ fan hoping for McClain to drop to them…however, I could see them trading in front of Miami to get him, seeing how they have less holes to fill than Miami.

Broncos and QB in round one
It’s not happening. No way they pass on McClain
by Sayre Bedinger on Jan 14, 2010 10:04 AM EST reply actions
Agreed... With The First Part.
I am almost certain that the Broncos will not take a QB at #10/#11. While I think there is reason for McClain to be the hot name attached to Denver at that spot, I still think there are plenty other ways to go that I’d prefer…

I’m willing to bet they take McCoy in the later rounds, as he seems like exactly who they need. Someone who won’t throw any further than 10 yards

seems unlikely since he has the same skill set as Bernard Pollard.
Yeah.
Bernard Pollard has provided legitimately excellent safety play this season. He’s already basically a best-case scenario of Taylor Mays.

Cleveland wouldn’t take spiller that early, and the last thing KC needs help with is CB. I’m willing to bet they go after O line help first, then safety or WR. I really don’t see Parcels grabbing a WR with a first round pick and shittsburgh is dying at safety. I wouldn’t be surprised if they traded up to get earl thomas, creating a secondary in which I would be afraid to throw longer than 4 yards against.
And Oakland isn’t smart enough to take Morgan ahead of Carlos Dunlap.
by The Licensed Pessimist on Jan 14, 2010 10:58 AM EST reply actions
Why do people say KC doesnt need CBs?
Do people like Carr that much? CB is one of the Chiefs bigger needs. Did anyone watch the Bronco game? Carr almost let Gaffney break Marschall’s catch record. JABARR GAFFNEY!!!! Carr is not that good. He isnt fast enough to cover good WRS and he has horrible body posistion. CB is a bigger need than LT by far. Haley has said Albert is a core player and he likes him at LT, Not that I agree with it but he did say this. Carr was not included and struggled all year. Also, Alot of people beleive Haden can play FS so its really not a bad pick.
by darwithabar on Jan 14, 2010 12:33 PM EST up reply actions
Any good physical CB can play safety, so if they needed a safety then they’ll draft a safety. And CB is not a bigger need when the Chiefs have had consistently one of the worst LT’s for the past 4 years. A #2 CB can be taken later in the draft, a LT not so much, especially one that could help a team that gives up 45-50 sacks a season.
And post these Haley comments you speak of. Albert is an underachiever at LT. He gave up a lot of sacks over the past 3 years and his natural position is guard. Regardless Haley won’t be the one with the final decision.
by The Licensed Pessimist on Jan 14, 2010 3:14 PM EST up reply actions
I'm not sure I agree with that
Any good physical CB can play safety
I will agree that the safety position is more physical than CB but I don’t think I agree that any good physical CB can play safety. The skill set is really different.
But if your saying that KC needs a LT first, C.B. second, and a safety third then I totally agree.

by lifelongvike on Jan 14, 2010 3:23 PM EST up reply actions
Firstly, I wouldn’t say the skill set of a CB and S are “really different”. Just getting that out of the way. But my point was that they aren’t going to draft Haden to fill in for a S. If they desire a safety then they’ll take Earl Thomas.
And Brandon Carr isn’t a bad CB. The key to a successful secondary is a pass rush, and the Chiefs were only behind the pathetic Jags at getting to the QB. So I would say LT is their first need, then OLB and then Safety. If they get to the QB more than 22 times their CB’s will be fine.
by The Licensed Pessimist on Jan 14, 2010 3:33 PM EST up reply actions
That makes sense
Thanks for clearing that up. I agree.
I’m not sure how good your CBs are but unless you have a pass rush you can’t really tell.
So if it comes down to Berry or Okung who are you taking?

by lifelongvike on Jan 14, 2010 3:48 PM EST up reply actions
Definitely berry. We need help on the right side of the line and its too early for a RT. I’m willing to bet if berry isn’t there then Morgan or Haden is the choice. Even though most cleveland fans would be, I wouldn’t be opposed to taking a QB
by The Licensed Pessimist on Jan 14, 2010 4:56 PM EST up reply actions
Well I'm not sure it would
be to early for Okung. He’s the best lt in the draft and you won’t be able to get another like him ( or Berry) for a long time.
Thanks for the input

McClain
That’s why a good LB would help with the pass rush, since that is where the sacks should be coming from in a 3-4 DEF.
McClain isn’t a pass rusher. It would be a mistake tacking him at that position
by The Licensed Pessimist on Jan 14, 2010 4:57 PM EST up reply actions
Albert has only player for 2 years...
So how did he give up a lot of sacks over the past 3 years? The line was better once JC started making an impact in the running game. The OL didn’t give up one sack to the Broncos and that includes NFL sack leader Elvis Dumervil, in the last blowout of the season. A new OG is more important as Waters is getting old, but OG is not a 1st round pick, but maybe a 2nd if Iupati is available.
Do people like Carr that much? CB is one of the Chiefs bigger needs.
No, we Chiefs fans don’t like Carr that much. It’s just that we know how bad our other positions are and that talent from those positions disappears rather rapidly compared to the CB position as it isn’t the “premium” position.
KC has 2 picks in round 2. One early, on mid. That would still be top of the board on the CB position. Take the higher talented premium position and hit on a CB in the mid rounds. Maybe the latter pick of Round 2, but not #5 overall or the 4th spot in the second…
Coffee. The NEW Performance Enhancing drug for Sport's Writers. Just ask Ken Rosenthal.
I really really dislike this draft for Seattle.
Alex Gibbs, the OL coach for Seattle has only once in 25 years taken an OL in the first round, and that was with pick #26. Granted, he doesn’t make the picks. But when you hire someone like an Alex Gibbs you listen to his input.
So, in the scenario you laid out the only two picks that make sense for Seattle at 6 are Clausen/Bradford (I prefer Clausen) or Spiller.
As for the 2nd pick, I just really really dislike Dunlap. Brian Price or Dan Wiliams and Arrellious Benn are the only ones I could really get behind there.
Other then that, good job busting out a mock draft and justifying it, they aren’t easy!
I agree.
Dunlap is so unimpressive to me that I’m surprised why any team would consider drafting him in the top 15. Especially Seattle, a team that isn’t known for gambling on players like Dunlap.

It's not the Cardinals have been crippled under his tenure by a single notable bust.
Maybe JJ Arrington, I guess, but they’ve never really tried running the football that often, and he atoned with Beanie Wells.

Scouting on Dunlap
Here’s one scouts view on Dunlap. He thinks the positives far outweighs the negatives.
Written by Curt Popejoy on DBI website
Scouting Report: It’s not every year an athlete like Dunlap comes along. He’s got a speed/size combination that reminds many of Mario Williams. The comparison is absolutely valid. Dunlap is huge with a massive wingspan, and is much faster than a 290lb should be. Much of the criticism around Dunlap centers around his lack of technique and questionable effort. If I recall, Mario Williams had many of the same criticisms. What cannot be denied is Dunlap is a matchup nightmare for offensive tackles. and when he’s on, he’s as disruptive a player as you will see.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
With regards to the poll, I voted no to drafting Eric Berry 1st overall.
If Eric Berry going first overall dictated that he get paid more than Ed Reed would, then it would be an overpayment, since Ed Reed is a proven player being paid his fair market value’s worth.
Kindle to the Pats
is an absolute best case scenario. He is exactly what they need, a preeminent athlete who plays with a chip on shoulder. He would’ve come in handy in that prideless display against Baltimore.
FYI
Phillips is not a starting safety for the Bucs.
Tampa has too many holes to fill to pick up Berry. I like him a ton but if we did end up taking him I think the best thing to do would be to try and put him at CB?
Thought this was interesting
Rams blog Turf Show Times collected some pre-draft scouting quotes related to former highly-drafted D-line busts and also included a new quote from Devaney: “It’s scary to use a high pick on a DT.”
Of course this time of the year smokescreens are everywhere, but still this could be interesting. Their GM Devaney was in the Atlanta front office when they drafted Matt Ryan over Glenn Dorsey. Could get real interesting.

Actually, Chris Long is currently the best D-Lineman taken in that draft.
Carriker has been injured and played out of his position. He isn’t a DT by any means. Chris Long is being called a future pro-bowler by Mel Kiper, as recently as a couple of weeks ago.
Devaney said taking a DT is scary, but he also mentioned that “right now, Suh is the top player.”
Scarier even is the fact that Devaney was in San Diego when they selected Ryan Leaf. We all know how that turned out.

I’m glad to see a draft where we’re not drafting Joe Haden. The Niners need help with the safety positions, not their cornerbacks.

The Philips arrest should not be the reason the Bucs would be looking at S Berry: the lack of talent (Piscatelli isn’t developing as well as hoped) is a more pressing matter.
However, with a franchise QB in Freeman, the Bucs need to improve the offensive tackle spot, especially considering how Trueblood is a penalty magnet.
So who’s the better value: Berry or Okung?

Miami is not drafting a WR with the 12th overall pick
I promise you that! Especially an underclassmen that didn’t even play his junior year because he was suspended! The Dolphins need Linebackers and a hard-hitting safety more than they need WR’s! They do need a true #1 reciever but more importantly they need some studs on defense and im sure Parcells was not very happy with the inconsistent play of the defense this past season! Part of the reason why they’re looking for a new defensive coordinator. Now if they were to go offense with the first pick I personally believe that CJ Spiller is the best player in the draft and I believe he’s gonna prove that at the combine! He will be a top 5 selection, but if by some chance he is sitting around when Miami is on the clock at number 12 i would be ecstatic if they picked him! I can’t believe the guy wasn’t even considered in the Heisman votes! He’s a good character guy, played four seasons and played even when he was injured! Explosive at all phases of the game running, recieving, and returning kicks! I watched him rip apart the Canes and the ACC for four years and he was the most exciting player that I have seen lately in college football. You can never have enough running backs and Ricky is only gonna play one more season and suffers from fumblitis! I love Ronnie Brown, but he has had a couple of seasons end early because of injuries. Patrick Cobbs went on IR early last season.
draft picks, claussen and bradford
one of those two are going to washington and the other to seahawks but no way he drops to # 9 because unless detroit is willing to trade down and draft an offensive lineman later. washington will grab one of them and you might have to trade up to kc to draft other. once one of those 2 qb’s drop, look out for teams to trade in front with teams like the raiders which i think should trade down because they have nothing.
