Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Miami Dolphins Team Needs:

1.  ILB.  Channing Crowder got his contract last year.  He follows that up with 53 tackles.  Not solo.  Combined.  He looked like a real LB this year for one game versus the Jets because he had to back up all that trash talking he was doing to Rex Ryan.  He exploded on their first running play into the backfield and it makes you wonder why he can't play like that every snap.  Torbor and Ayodele are backup types.  In a 3-4, you need more impact play from your linebackers.

2.  WR.  Ted Ginn is complimentary receiver right now.  He's not very good fighting for the ball in traffic and rarely comes up with the spectacular catch.  People need to stop expecting him to do things he will never do like being physical or getting tough yards after the catch.  He's best running vertical routes, then setting up DB's for the deep comeback.  Chad Henne should make Ginn a more productive WR but he's a #3 or a #2 at best.  Next year will be crucial for him.  Hartline, Camarillo and Bess seem like the same type of posession WR though Hartline gets underestimated and can find himself behind the secondary.  Bess is solid in the slot.  Last years 3rd round pick Patrick Turner never got on the field for a team needing receiver help and will need a good showing in OTA's and training camp and a willingness to play special teams (unlike Hartline).

3.  S.  I don't know what Parcells saw in Gibril Wilson.  The guy cannot make a play on the ball when it's in the air.  Yeremiah Bell is a better run defender than a pass defender, so when those two are your starting safeties you know you're in trouble as far as defending the pass.  Chris Clemmons got some playing time mid-season but the coaching staff went back to Wilson.  They should've just let the rookie play to see what they had in him.  He couldn't have performed much worse than Wilson.

3B.  DE/OLB.  Joey Porter is washed up.  He only gets sacks versus the Buffalo Bills backup OT's or when a RB/TE is assigned to block him.  He gets shut down by everyone else.  His fire and determination are respected but the dropoff in production is noticeable.  Jason Taylor is a better overall player and a team leader willing to do anything to help the team but he has also lost a step when getting after the QB.  These two took significant playing time away from promising Cameron Wake who looked like the only pass rusher with any kind of explosion off the snap.  If Wake can improve other areas of his game, he's a lock to start at one spot next year.  I expect Taylor to return, but not Porter.

4.  NT.  We hear a lot how after Jason Ferguson went down, so did Miami's run defense.  I contend that had more to do with Miami's opponents and continued poor LB play.  Paul Soliai actually showed some flashes but needs to develop more consistency.  Soliai will definately return, though Ferguson's return has a lot to do with who they bring in via the draft/free agency.

I could see Miami addressing any of these positions with their 1st round pick with the exception of WR.  I can't see Parcells passing on top defensive talent to pick a WR.  Rolando McClain has to be Miami's #1 target.   If he's there, I see Miami snagging him up.  Denver with the pick before Miami, or the Giants possibly trading in front of Miami are a concern.  Miami with so many holes to fill, are a longshot to trade away additional draft choices to move up to take McClain.  If he's gone, they could possibly target the top available pass rusher (ie: Sergio Kindle, Texas) or a NT (Cody, Alabama or Williams, Tennesse).  I don't see them taking Texas' Earl Thomas, as Miami seems to have size criteria for the safety position (they should make an exception with Thomas) and taking Taylor Mays would give them the same type of player they already have in Bell / Wilson though Mays is an exceptional talent.

If it's deemed spam, it gets deleted.

OLB

I think Miami will have its pick of the litter for OLB. I can’t see any team in front of them taking one. The question is who?
I have asked this of Miami fans before. With the injury to Brown and Williams age why wouldn’t you jump on the chance to get C.J. Spillers?

There are a good number of us

who are all for jumping for Spiller. And I would say that he would be a good pickup if McClain is gone in the 1st, there’s not really anyone else we could use that I would use my 1st round pick on.

NT is definitly the biggest need IMO

Its not coiencidence that lossing Ferguson happened right before the breakdown.

NT is a big need, but I don't think that it is the biggest need we have.

Soliai is at least serviceable, and can manage the position if Ferguson decides to retire. And Ferguson has talked about playing 1 more year with us then retiring, so while it is something we need to address, if we draft a NT I think it will be in a later round.

NT is the most important position in a 34

by TheRealSlimShady on Jan 14, 2010 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

NT in FA not draft .. early anyways

I agree that it is but I would say that the chances of getting a NT in FA is more of a probablility than say an OLB or ILB. The chances of getting Ferg back is always there and also Casey Hampton is apparently available .. Wilfork would be nice but that is a pipedream.. I could see us picking someone up in either the 4th or 6th round as well

by markus_13 on Jan 14, 2010 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

Hampton should be available in FA

I don’t see the Steelers resigning him and he’s still been serviceable this year.

Franklin for the Niners is due for FA but the talk is that he’ll get a franchise tag this year.

Patriots don’t seem in any rush to resign Wilfork so he might be available.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

First

OLBer is a much bigger need then WR especially since we need 2, Wake is merely a one-trick-pony at this point and there have been zero indicators this will change anytime soon. NT is a need but a rotater is needed PLUS like JT last year Fergison wants to return and has stated its Miami or retirement meaning like JT lasy year we have a short-term hole-plugger if needed. NT will be addressed with a late round pick.

Personally, I would rank our postions of need as:

1. ILB
2. FS
3. OLB
4. WR
5. NT
6. RB

That being said, if something happens and we end up with the opportunity to pick up a big talent that may not be at one of our higher priorities, I don’t think that we can pass it up.

Blaze, whats your opinion on Spiller?

and which OLB do you see available with the first pick?

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by lifelongvike on Jan 14, 2010 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

At 12 all OLBers will be available

there is depth at OLBer position in rounds 2 an 3 but I dont currently see a worthy #12 OLB though with Miami coaching the South in the senor bowl one might appear to the phin staff Hughes??? I like Spiller BUT again at 12 I am not going to take a RB with R. Brown there for minimum 1 more year and the depth of RB. If you must have a rb I would rather have defense and draft a Hardesty/Brown/Gerhart/Dwyer/Mathews in 3rd/4th.

If right now I would guess on a pick other then McClain I would choose Kindle. And if McClain is available he goes to Miami anjd I wouldnt be shocked if used at OLBer position IF IF IF a Spikes/Johnson drafted later atleast until Crowder’s 2 remaining years are used up

Yeah makes sense from a Miami perspective

Thanks for the insight

That's where we disagree. Kindle at 12 is a HUGE reach.

IMO, If McClain is off the board, I want Dez Bryant. Or preferably trade back in the draft and add some early picks and take Dan Williams or Terrence Cody.

Parcells

This is a good analysis. But remember to put everything through the Parcells filter. Think of who he brought from Dallas to Miami – this group includes a NT (Ferguson), FB (Polite), and TE (Fasano). He likes the guys that get dirty. #1 receivers are pretty boys with big egos – he does not like them. That’s why when a WR was needed last year he picked Hartline in the 4th. McClain is his type of guy.

by ct17 on Jan 15, 2010 12:06 AM EST reply actions

I think that if Fergusuon retires, actually even if he doesn't, NT is our biggest need. That's the most important position in a 3-4 D.

Everything else I pretty much agree with. McClain should be our pick if he’s there. Hopefully we could land Terrence Cody or Dan Williams in round 2. And hopefully we will sign a legit go-to WR, ala Brandon Marshall or Steve Breaston, Henne’s former college teamate.

by JP 23 on Jan 15, 2010 10:43 AM EST reply actions

I'd rather have Boldin

Boldin is what know, 30? I'd rather have Breaston who's just 25 and was Henne's go-to guy in college.

Although, if I have to give up picks like CardsDefense said, that changes everything. Forget it.
