Finally Collecting on Gentlemen's Wagers
Prior to this season, several members of this community bet that certain teams would finish with better records than my Broncos. Of course, no money was wagered, but there were stakes that should be settled now.
Follow me below the fold for the details!
Staleystan595455: If the Broncos do better than the Bears I PROMISE to post a sincere apology to you on this very website or mile high whichever you prefer. ill also make either John Elway or TD my profile image they are not so bad. Are you willing to make such a wager?
Me: As for the bet, I’d be happy to put up my profile image against yours in a Bears v. Broncos regular season record wager. I think the most fitting thing would be to have pics of Cutler for me and Orton for you. If anything, I’ll give you the back-up of Josh McDaniels and I’ll take Devin Hester as mine. Do we have a bet?
Staleystan595455: yeah ill put watever picture you ask of me on the condition that you put up Devin Hester Hurdling Todd Sauerbraun (Ouch Spelling?) or Cutler in a Bears jersey.
Me: Denver has me in the gambling mood (by the way, Vegas opened them at 7.5 wins in 2009) so I’d be willing to make a friendly wager on this.
Brendan Scolari: I’d be up for a wager as well, I love gambling.
Me: I’ve promised my SBNation image to a Bears fan just in case, but maybe we can wager a nice signature comment or something like that. I’ve got the Broncos at more wins than the Rams if you want in…
Brendan Scolari: Sure, I’m game.
I look forward to seeing/reading the fruits of my reckless gambling ASAP.
There were plenty of other people (MBoz126, BradyQuinnisBeast a.k.a TheRealSlimShady and just about anyone else who was on here during the preseason) who insisted that my Broncos would be one of the ten-to-five worst teams this season, but didn't have the brass ones to put anything on it. I'd love to say that I hate to say "I told you so", but I worked a lot on my flexibility just to be able to pat myself on the back like this! And as the cherry on top of this sundae, Orton posted better QB ratings than Cutler as a Bear (Kyle's 2008 v. Jay's 2009) AND as a Bronco (Kyle's 2009 v. Jay's 2008).
P.S.: Before you guys get all crazy on me, please note that - though this is all true - it's all in jest, to provide some much needed levity!

I didnt say anything about them but i thought they would do alot worse than they did
To be fair though they went 2-8 the last 10 games. Im surprised they went 6-0, they were playing better than they actually are. Good luck next year when we beat you again ( All in good fun)
GO CHIEFS
Yeah.
I went into the season thinking they’d be a game above or below .500. I’m really interested to see how they perform with more time under the system and an even more refined roster for it.

It should be intresting
I really hope we can stop San Diego from going to the Playoffs. I firguered the Broncos would be around 6-10 or 5-11 just because they had no defense last year. Mike Nolan did a good job though.
Yeah.
The D wore down late in the year, but they were flat-out amazing early on. Once again, there are a bunch of stopgaps out there for now and it’ll be great to see the transition to players in their primes over the next few years.

Give some love to Orton
I had dinner with a bears fan last nnight. Could not get the guy to give Cutler any love. I pointed out Orton’s winning record. His Stats and how if Orton had QBd the SB for Chicago he might have won it for them. Then pointed out how well he did in Denver. Just something about Orton that people hate. Even if he’s a winner.
Congrats to Denver. Good start of a turnaround.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
you say turnaround
I think they were a better team in 08, just for some reason completely imploded late in the season, a la this year

As A Fan...
I can tell you that this year’s team was better when it was good and just about as bad when it collapsed. Trust me, the franchise is definitely headed in the right direction…

Eh.
I still think Cutler has the tools to be the best QB in the NFL (he always reminded me of Brett Farve) but he needs to get smarter and tougher, develope some leadership and trust his team/coaches. I think QBs get too much credit for their records and football stats are still not the best. All that said, I’m as thrilled with the trade today as I was with it the day it was made. Orton won’t win any popularity or beauty contests, but he’s not going to hurt your team and he’s far more likely to help.

Getting an o line in Chicago wouldn’t hurt his chances either!
Bills fan? In Colorado? It's more likely than you think.

Not sure if i said anything here
but I certainly expected the Broncos to suck

Ha!
No worries, everyone did. Like I said in the “P.S.”, this is really just a light-hearted “I told you so” and, more than anything else, a fun way of pointing out how flawed our perceptions can be. By the way, best of luck to your Colts!

Yes just like peope picking the Steelers and Giants to make the playoffs. Flawed perception. I thought the Bears would do worse than they did is my pereception flawed? If a Jets fan told you before the season they would be in the AFC Championship game what would you have said?
I guess I just don’t get the reason for this post.
McShay, Todd McShay you hear me boy? It's me TJ and I'm coming for your damn job boy! Oh be scared, be very scared McShay.

Meh.
I made all sorts of flawed assumptions and I would not mind one bit if people called me out on them. And if I wagered on those, I’d be more than happy to live up to that. People thought the Broncos would be among the worst teams in the NFL for no other reason than the Jay Cutler trade and the McDaniels signing, something that was consistently put out by the media.
Like I said, it’s a light-hearted pat on my own back for getting something right that most people did not agree with. It’s also a way to remind everyone not to get to into your own opinions and beliefs so as to allow yourself to get into arguments and bets over these things. That sort of thing…

Good luck with that
I haven’t seen Brendan on here for a long time and I really do believe that was one of the very few posts that Staleystan made on here.

This was all for fun, you know?

Everyone also thought the Browns would be the worst team.

Its almost as hard to predict stench
as it is to predict winners.
well…you can count on the Colts at least.

LOL @ Them

Hmmm...
I was high on the Titans, but I was just about right about the Texans (basically mediocre, miss the playoffs)…

That’s what I don’t get…..you’re patting yourself on the back for your team being mediocre. If the Broncos made the playoffs (which nearly happend) yeah I would be talking trash too if it were my team, but as you said about the Texans, you guys are mediocre.

Jesus, Man...
This wasn’t about the Broncos being awesome, it was about them blowing people’s expectations (especially since it’s draft related) out of the water. Expectations which, by the way, were so pervasive and strongly-held, that people would make wagers such as the ones above. I realize that, with your Bears proving people wrong in the opposite direction, you might find this annoying, but you can afford to look the other way…

I get it
Just calling a team mediocre (Texans) when your team was in the same boat as them. I don’t understand that.
Bears didn’t prove other people wrong most had us making the playoffs. I had us going 0-16 as I do every year. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
Your comment here threw me off with what seems (I could be wrong) to be dogging the Texans for being just mediocre, yet wanting props for the Broncos to be the same. There is surprises evey year, we will be shocked next year as well and the year after.
I’m not trying to be a dick, if I’m coming across that way I apologize, it’s not my intention.

No.
I didn’t mean to dog the Texans, I said I had them pegged right: they were a hot playoff sleeper and I disagreed, which turned out to be right. My Broncos were mediocre this year, as their record plainly indicates. I don’t want props for 8-8 in a vacuum, but when everyone was so convinced that they’d be among the worst in the league (and that means everyone on TV and damn near anyone that had anything to do with draft stuff) I think that merits a taste of crow. I wasn’t all serious about it (I’m not chasing these people down or anything) I just thought it was fun. I’m rarely right and this time I got one, so I touted my own horn for giggles. Sorry for flipping out and for apparently being terrible at explaining things…

Yes that win over and under prediction was a joke!
Let’s see Vegas called it at 7.5 wins and they won…………EIGHT! WOW! Blew that away.
Maybe that win versus the Bengals should only count as a half, considering it was a freaking miracle!
But yes, all the people who predicted that Denver would be in the bottom five of the league need to come clean.
Actually...
I used the Vegas line as evidence that the media and many other fans had gone to far in their predictions of a Denver demise. Like I said in the comments above, I imagined we’d go 7-9, 8-8 or 9-7 (I’m on record in that range at MHR) and I thought I did a fair job explaining why, but people refused to listen. Anyway, I’ll brb; I have to let Buffalo know that we’re replaying the 200 playoffs because Tennessee’s “miracle win” doesn’t really count…

but people refused to listen
So we’re supposed to listen to every fan. If we were to listen to every fan most likely there will be 32 playoff teams next year. If a Jets fan told me they would be in the AFC Champ game, guess what? I’m not listening to them.
For now on I will believe every fan.

Nah.
Don’t listen to everyone, but give people the chance to make an argument based on evidence and acknowledge the fact that fans know their teams better. Basically, my argument boiled down to the fact that the 2008 Broncos were 8-8, the only negative move was replacing Cutler with Orton (which I argued wasn’t as bad as most made it out and ended up being a wash basically) and it was at least offset by the positive moves (FA and the draft). People refused to even entertain the posibility because Jay’s a “franchise QB” and Kyle is not. They claimed that change would cost us 5 wins regardless of the other moves. Eh, whatever, you’re the type that doesn’t want to listen anyway…

No I get what your saying
But saying people refused to listen, well yeah because they have their opinions. I wouldn’t have listened to a Jets fan this year. Hell I was wrong this year, I had the Giants and Steelers in the super bowl and neither made the playoffs.
The refused to listen comment threw me off because if we listened to everyone 32 teams would be playing for the Super Bowl.
That comment threw me off.

My Bad.
We got our signals crossed somewhat in this thread and I’m sorry for coming across as a dick because I thought you were being one. I think we see eye to eye now, so it’s all good. Here’s a positive thing: I can now go back to not rooting against your Bears because my Broncos have nothing at stake there anymore!
