Arizona Cardinals team needs

This is going to be an important offseason for the Arizona Cardinals. There are a lot of questions and the answers to those questions will greatly affect the future of this franchise. Is Kurt Warner retiring? Can Matt Leinart keep this franchise going in the right direction? How can the defense be improved? Below are the areas that I believe need addressing.

1. Tackle

- Jeremy Bridges cannot be counted on and Levi Brown has not developed as expected. So whether Warner returns or not this position needs an influx of talent. I also feel that Coach Whisenhunt would like to put more focus on his running attack, especially if there is a change at the quarterback position.

2. Linebacker

- The Cardinals could lose Carlos Dansby and need upgrades throughout the linebacking core. The draft is a great place to get depth and playmakers at the linebacker position.

3. Quarterback

- This is going to be a very hot topic throughout the offseason. Everyone is awaiting Kurt Warner’s decision and most anticipate that he will retire. So the big question is whether or not Matt Leinart can run this high powered offense. I am willing to bet that most Cardinal fans are not very comfortable handing the keys over to Leinart. While there may be other more pressing needs, a long term answer at the quarterback position has to be the most important.

my take

1. Tackle is a big time need but it’s not near as dire as the linebacker spot for a couple of reasons. First, at least at OT there are a couple of young guys who’ve been in the system and the organization is supposedly high on (Brandon Keith and Herman Johnson). Granted I know they aren’t going to say they suck and we can’t use them but there are some reports that Keith has been groomed to take over a starting job next season. That being said I still think using a first round pick on a OT wouldn’t be a terrible idea.

2. I know you listed “linebacker” as the second overall need but that’s really two entirely different area’s of need. First at inside linebacker, if Karlos (with a K) Dansby leaves we have no one (and I literally mean no one) to replace him with. We would have to either start a guy who is drafted in April or find someone in free agency. No one on our roster is capable of starting in his place. Second at outside linebacker (aka the heart of a 3-4 defense), we have the killer combination of “old and washed up” and “young and inexperienced.” Last year’s starters, Clark Haggans and Chike Okeafor, were 65 and 66 respectively and Okeafor is a free agent. We would assume that last year’s second round pick, Cody Brown, would step into a starting role but he missed the entire season with a wrist injury, and he wasn’t exactly tearing up the preseason to begin with. The only other player of note here is Will Davis, a sixth round pick last year, who showed some promise in limited playing time but asking him to take significant snaps at this point would seem like a massive mistake.

4. One position that I’d list above QB is cornerback (and I know I had a lengthy debate with someone on this site a while back about why that wasn’t a pressing need but after seeing the last half of the season and the playoffs I’m ready to raise the white flag and admit I was wrong). McFadden has been a massive disappointment and the team tried to hide veteran corner Ralph Brown at safety during the playoffs. Youngsters Greg Toler and Michael Adams simply aren’t ready to contribute and all of that adds up to one giant hole across the field from DRC. We need another corner to compliment that young playmaker.

3. I fully understand the questions surrounding Leinart taking over and Warner possibly leaving but in my mind there are two many other holes on this team to worry about that that possibility right now. For now we must assume that Leinart is capable of becoming at least an average NFL QB and shore up other needs on this team, namely on the defensive side of the ball.

If I had to list the needs in order it would be:

 - ILB (if Dansby leaves)
 - OLB and OT – These two are too close to call in my mind so it would come down to BPA at the time
 - CB

Oddly enough

I would esily say linebacker and corner are of greater need then QB, for sure.

Warner leaves, the Cards are screwed at QB anyway, but no team can win with defensive output liek the Cards put up in the playoffs. don’t care who’s at QB.

I thought Toler looked good.

I’d like to see what he can do on the opposite side of DRC.

I don't see that the Cardinals are in a very good position to address the QB position this year.

I would think they would give Leinhart a shot and address the offensive tackle issue this year in the first round…….and possibly the second too.

Do a Jacksonville and pick two Tackles. Trade up [2011 picks will have to be used] to grab a Left Tackle [ Bulaga or Charles Brown], then use your second round pick for a Right Tackle [Calloway or .

Or wait and grab the best available Tackle at #26 [Trent Williams?] and one of the better Guards in Round Two [Iupati or Pouncey?]. Might need to trade up in the second round for one of those.

I jist feel so left out so I just had to join.

ILB- Losing CD, KD, would be a travesty. When will Mark Washington and Reggie Walker be ready to contribute.
OLB- Davis and Cody will need some help.
T- Keith, Wells, Seindlein (for now), Brown and Munster. With that we should at least beable to run the ball.
QB- Kurt will retire and Matt can’t go down field. We will need to run.

Hey Cards, we'll trade you Deion Branch for Anquan Boldin.

That way we can swap injury-prone receivers.

Hell, I’d be ecstatic if we swapped Branch for Leinart.

Holmgren would have drafted Crabtree.

by Fearless Frog on Jan 19, 2010 10:18 PM EST reply actions

Leinart would be an improvement over Seneca Wallace for sure

then you could save your 2 first rounders for other areas of need.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Jan 20, 2010 7:07 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely.

Getting a live football player for Branch would be a win. He’s probably one of the worst values for the money in all of the NFL.

Holmgren would have drafted Crabtree.

Jeremy Bridges

My buddy is a die hard Cards fan and he seems to speak fairly high in regards to Bridges. Any other Cards fans care to give their input on him?

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?

by Drew Kerr on Jan 19, 2010 10:42 PM EST reply actions

uhhhhh

He had one great game against Jared Allen (but got tons of help from Hightower), then got exposed towards the end of the season

by Ogre7 on Jan 20, 2010 2:33 AM EST up reply actions

he seems like a great backup plan b/c he can play any position but center

but he got exposed with increased playing time down the stretch. Some fans let the Minnesota game cloud their judgment on Bridges. He got help nearly every play from either a back or tight end.

by Bezekira on Jan 20, 2010 8:23 AM EST up reply actions

If Boldin does go we should trade him to the bucs for Josh Johnson and a 2nd round pick

that would give us a talented, young, intelligent qb to compete with Matt. We could use the additional 2nd round pick to grab some depth at CB or LB

by CardsDefense on Jan 19, 2010 10:58 PM EST reply actions

McNabb is available...

But at what price. With our aging LBs we need our draft picks to infuse some youth at the position. He would cost us have the draft.

Every year the McNabb trade rumors start

and every year they fall through. Vick will be available. Pennington plans on playing again and could be good for another year or two (well 1 1/2 anyway).

Campbell will be a FA.

There really isn’t much in the way of FA QBs.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Jan 20, 2010 7:09 PM EST up reply actions

I thought Leinart looked pretty good in that playoff game against the Saints. I still don’t think he has been given a fair shake at becoming a starting QB. I think they need to see what they’ve got in Leinart before ditching him.

Besides, QB is the least of their worries right now. Did you guys see those two playoff games? They need a freakin secondary, stat.

by KingRichard on Jan 19, 2010 11:45 PM EST reply actions

couldn't agree more

Leinart hasn’t taken significant snaps in a couple of years and too many people seem to gloss over the fact that he got replaced by one of the most prolific QB’s of this era. It’s not like he’s sitting second chair to Kyle Boeller or something.

he's also very old and only interested in rushing the passer

As a situational pass rusher that’s fine but he’s not a guy who play a significant number of downs.

Bucky Brooks Mock Draft

Has Sam Bradford falling to #26 as Cardinals first pick and first QB taken.

Bucky Brooks is a boob.

WOW! Bucky Brooks take a bow. Worst Mock of 2010!

Trent Williams at #4, Dunlap at #6, and Berry falls to #13?!?

Just awful.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 20, 2010 8:07 AM EST up reply actions

dumb, just dumb

There is no way Berry leaves the top 10(maybe even top 5)

by Ogre7 on Jan 20, 2010 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

Berry for sure won't go top 5

that’s my bold prediction.

He might slip out of the top 10. Historically safeties just haven’t gone very high in the draft.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

Worst mock drafts

are the ones that have the Cards taking Bradford, that would be drafting Leinart all over again, a tall QB who is super accurate but lacks the arm strength. and for the mocks that have us taking Gresham, you can tell that person knows nothing about the Cards except for thinking, “they love offense” mentality.

by Ogre7 on Jan 20, 2010 1:18 PM EST reply actions

When naming similarities...

Don’t forget injury prone. How many season ending injuries has Matty boy had? And Bradford had two in the same year. How does that happen? Shouldn’t have come back so soon.

I feel good about Leinart as the Quarterback.

He looked good in the Titans game that the defense choked away, and I think he would do well in a more balanced offense. But that would probably mean that Boldin would have to go. And Whiz has been wanting to run an offense like the one the Steelers had while he was there, so he will probably do more of that now.

If Warner retires, give Leinart the full offseason/preseason knowing that he will start, adapt the offense to fit his strengths, and see what he can do. Obviously he will never be as good as Warner, not many people are, but I think he can be a good NFL Quarterback.
