Mock Draft 1.3
1. St. Louis- DT- Ndamukon Suh- Neb
- I am sticking to my guns and saying the Rams cannot and will not pass up Suh. The Rams are nowhere near competing so they will be picking in the top 5 again next year where quarterbacks like Jake Locker and Ryan Mallet will be available. The Rams know what they are getting with Suh and will risk that a quarterback will be available next season.
2. Detroit- DT- Gerald McCoy- Okl
- Missing out on Suh will be a big disappointment for the Lions but McCoy will be a nice addition to a terrible Lions defense. Some will argue that Berry is the better player but the Lions really need help along the defensive front. Having a safety tandem of Berry and Delmas is a luxury this poor Lions team just can’t have.
3. Tampa Bay- S- Eric Berry- Tenn
- Berry has playmaker written all over him and that’s what this defense needs. I also believe that Derrick Morgan is still in play here. Don’t under estimate the importance of a good pass rush.
4. Washington- OT- Russell Okung- Okl St
- The Redskins need to find the answer at quarterback, but a young quarterback behind a terrible offensive line is a recipe for disaster. Also I think Shanahan feels this team can win now so I expect Campbell to be given another shot. Shanahan is known for his work on the offensive side of the ball.
5. Kansas City- CB- Joe Haden- Fla
- The Chiefs main need is on the defensive side of the ball and the secondary is arguably the weakest position. Joe Haden can step right in and be a good cover corner which will help the defense tremendously.
6. Seattle- OT- Anthony Davis- Rut
- The athletic Davis is going to really impress teams with his workouts. His has a lot of upside and offensive line is a major need for Seattle. Pete Carroll may want to take a chance on Jimmy Clausen but it seems unlikely. Carroll didn’t come back to the NFL to struggle with a rookie quarterback. Also Derrick Morgan is a possibility here; the Seahawks really struggled putting pressure on the quarterback last season.
7. Cleveland- RB- CJ Spiller- Clem
- Cleveland has more than a few holes to fill but a playmaker on offense is a major need. Jerome Harrison had a good end to the season but is he really the answer at running back? CJ Spiller brings a lot of speed to this offense, speed they may need to replace if they are forced to trade Josh Cribbs. This might be a little high for Spiller but my prediction is that he is going to post huge numbers at the combine which will sky rocket his stock.
8. Oakland- DE- Derrick Morgan- Ga Tech
- Oakland can use help on the offensive line but they could also benefit from a better pass rush. Morgan has the ability to provide that rush and also play well against the run. I really think that the smart pick would be Jimmy Clausen but Al Davis is not ready to give up on JaMarcus Russell. Again don’t discount Davis’s commitment to Russell which might lead to the Raiders reaching on an offensive lineman.
9. Buffalo- QB- Jimmy Clausen- ND
- Fitzpatrick and Brohm are not the long term solution at the position. A left tackle would be a nice pick but there are not worthy of the #9 pick. Clausen will immediately be the best quarterback on the roster and could start from day 1. This might be a little low for the first quarterback to come off the board but injuries (Clausen-toe, Bradford-shoulder) are going to limit the quarterbacks’ chances of impressing at workouts. While players like Price, Haden, Morgan, and Davis will all see their stock rise due to being able to display their athletic ability.
10. (X) Denver(from Chicago)- QB- Sam Bradford- Okl
- This is Josh McDaniel’s team so offense will win out over defense. McClain would be a nice addition but McDaniels knows how important the quarterback position is and he will love Bradford’s skill set. I will be watching closely the Brandon Marshall saga because that may have a direct effect on this selection.
11. (X) Jacksonville- DE- Jason Pierre-Paul- USF
- Jacksonville missed with Derrick Harvey and Quenton Groves but they still need a pass rush and will hope Pierre-Paul could provide this. Jacksonville has proved in the past that they will go with need over best available. If the Jags win the coin toss and pick before Denver they will still go with Pierre-Paul. Coach Del Rio is in a win now mode and a quarterback of the future doesn’t provide that.
12. Miami- WR- Dez Bryant- Okla. St.
- This is a tough call; both Bryant and Rolando McClain fit needs. However, if the Dolphins want Chad Henne to succeed they need to provide him with weapons. Look for Miami to address the linebacker position later in the draft.
13. San Francisco- S- Earl Thomas- Tex
- Coach Singletary will fight the urge to go with hard hitting Taylor Mays but in the end he will see Thomas is much more of a playmaker. Thomas is much better in the passing game where San Francisco needs a lot of help.
14. Seattle(from Denver)- DE- Carlos Dunlap- Fla
- Dunlap’s off the field issues will be overshadowed by his combine numbers. Seattle’s defense needs help along the front line. Dunlap has all the ability to provide a devastating pass rush. I think the Seahawks will go offensive line first while hoping Dunlap is still available at this selection.
15. New York Giants- LB- Rolando McClain- Ala
- This is a bit far down the draft for a talent like McClain to fall but in this mock he does, which is a blessing for the Giants. The Broncos and Dolphins could also be interested in McClain. If McClain is gone look for the Giants to go either defensive line or outside linebacker.
16. (X) San Francisco (from Carolina) - T- Trent Williams- Okla.
- Trent Williams fits a major need. Coach Sing wants to run the ball and stabilizing the offensive line is the first step. Williams is a stretch at left tackle but a potential pro bowler at right tackle.
17. (X) Tennessee- DT- Brian Price- UCLA
- Tennessee is still searching for a replacement for Big Albert and while Price is not Albert, it’s a start. The Titians struggled in with pass defense so CB Patrick Robinson is also an option here.
18. Pittsburg- DT- Dan Williams- Tenn
- Pittsburg may need a replacement for NT Casey Hampton and Williams has the size to play the Nose tackle position.
19. (X) Atlanta- CB- Patrick Robinson-Fla St.
- Atlanta needs help at the corner position and Robinson is going rise after the combine results. Anyone that could run down Noel Devine is really fast. Not only is Robinson fast he can also cover and support in the running game.
20. (X) Houston- OT- Bryan Bulaga- Iowa
- Depth along the offensive line is something every team needs. Bulaga gives this emerging Texans team insurances and more protection for their fragile quarterback.
21. Cincinnati- TE- Jermaine Gresham- Okla.
- Cincinnati has to get some more weapons for Carson Palmer. There was almost no production from the tight end position and Gresham is a playmaker. The Bengals could also look wide receiver here but as of now none are worthy of this draft position.
22. New England- LB- Sergio Kindle- Tex
- Kindle had a good national championship game and may see his stock rise more after the combine. New England needs some young talent at the Linebacker position and a replacement for Adialius Thomas, whom has likely played his last game as a Patriot. Kindle goes ahead of Navarro Bowman in this situation because his pass rush abilities fit the Patriots scheme.
23. Green Bay- OT- Bruce Campbell- Maryland
- Offensive line help is the biggest need for Green Bay and Campbell offers a viable option. Aaron Rodgers is hoping that Campbell can step right in and keep the likes of Jared Allen of his back.
24. Philadelphia- LB- Navarro Bowman
Philadelphia needs help at the safety and linebacker positions and Bowman is the best available at either position.
25. Baltimore- S- Taylor Mays- USC
- There are questions surrounding Ed Reed and while Mays doesn’t have Reed’s coverage skills he is an intimidating force. Mays has a lot of ability, now he just needs to put it together.
26. Arizona- LB- Ricky Sapp- Clem
- Arizona needs an influx of talent at the linebacker position. Sapp creates a lot of havoc in the opponents back field.
27. Dallas- T- Charles Brown- USC
- Dallas needs help along its offensive line and while Brown may not be an immediate help he has a lot of potential. Brown can be the possible replacement for Flozell Adams.
28. San Diego- NT- Terrence Cody- Ala.
- This is a pure need selection. Cody is basically a 2 down player but is a nice replacement for Jamal Williams. San Diego cannot survive with Ian Scott holding down the all important nose tackle position.
(X)- To be determinded by coin flip

You can win with one star and a bunch of role players or a bunch of stars and one role player.
Do the math.
How do you think Indianapolis has been doing it for years? Insert Jim Sorghi or even Chad Pennington in his place and see how far they would get. Playoffs? PLAYOFFS? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?
The Detroit Lions went through this last year. The Ram QB situation is just as bad as Detroits was. If Detroit had passed on Stafford last year for who..Curry? J. Smith? they would be in the same mess as last year. Nitpicking the available QBs and the same fans saying how much better next years QB class will be and we will be picking in the top three or so anyway so lets go with Suh……blah, blah, blah.
Funny how making those same picks every year ends up ensuring that you pick very very early every year.
+1
Looking at the Rams and the Lions squads heading into their #1 overall pick years…the Rams seem a bit better suited to draft a Franchise QB.
..they already drafted the QB’s protector for the next 10 years (hopefully) with Jason Smith. They also have a very good running game.
Lions fans had the same questions on Stafford last year. I dunno how anyone can say Stafford was so much better then Clausen right now…I think Clausen’s better. No knock at all to Stafford.

+2 (although I like Stafford better)
The Rams are nowhere near competing so they will be picking in the top 5 again next year where quarterbacks like Jake Locker and Ryan Mallet will be available.
Slightly Modified:
The Rams are nowhere near competing so they will be picking in the top 5 again next year (unless they get some flukey wins against the many bad teams out there) where quarterbacks like ______ and ______ will be available (IF they are healthy, and IF they are still on the board).
This phrase can now be used every year until the end of time, or until the Rams draft a 1st Round QB, whichever comes first.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
I'll also add that the Suh hype is starting to remind me of Steve Emtman...

i am not really sold on either of these quarterbacks, i do believe they have a chance to be really good. But there are plenty of teams out there that have a dominate defense, good running back and a “get by” quarterback. How many teams have been burned by missing on a high quarterback pick? Joey Harrington, JaMarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf have all set their franchises back years.
Jon Dove
QB vs. DL
Everyone knew Russell was a project. But the bust rates on DEs and DTs are just as high, if not worse. Dorsey has not played well. Nor Sedrick Ellis.
The same reason that Pierre-Paul is a reach for jacksonville. Harvey and Groves did not turn out as planned. I cannot see them taking a risk on a player who did not perform well last year. If they pick a pash rusher, it will need to be a safe pick.
Clausen is a multi-year starter for a major program. Looks better than Mirer or Quinn, who were hyped more for their potential out of high school. Locker and Mallett look like they have potential, but at this point it would be too early to put them in Clausen’s league.
I should add, I hate Notre Dame because of all the fawning over them. But Clausen is the best pick.
Dorsey is starting to play well
contrary to popular belief
But, I see the point you’re trying to make

Harrington was very..very average in his final season at Oregon.
I remember the year before he was a top 5 pick…but when he was out in the draft..most thought a team would be nuts to draft him in round one.
Harrington = Jevan Snead…to put it simply. If he sat a few years..maybe it would help.
Russell was pretty bad aside from one game. Leaf had more talent then Peyton Manning…but since he was a headcase like Jeff George..he turned out similar.
Also..Millen, AL Davis and the previous Chargers regime…had no idea what they are doing.
Clausen’s junior year was much..MUCH better then Matt Stafford’s junior year. I’ll only use Clausen cuz his numbers aren’t inlfated by his college’ style of offense.
The teams that have a “get by” QB…teams like the Jets and Ravens. Those “get by” QB’s have already been called their Franchise QB’s. They’re young and will get better.
Teams can be set back…yea. You can be set back by any position.
Suh’s no guarantee.
Its just…if Suh reaches his potential and Clausen reaches his…..what’s better for the team?
One defensive lineman? Or One QB?

How many teams have won a SB with that "get by" QB?
One.
Having a good QB with a good DE is better than having a Dominate D and a “Dilfer” QB.
I getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.
Not sure about your history Steel
Hostetler won with the Giants, Dilfer won with the Ravens, Brad Johnson won with Tampa Bay. Tom Brady was not a great QB his first year. He was more of a game manager.
Bob Griese was not a franchise QB by any stretch of the imagination. Jim McMahon was a glorified journeyman. Joe Theismann was another QB tha was nowhere near dominant.
Some of the other guys who have won Super Bowls have had less than great careers but had the raw ability to be dominant. ie. Doug Williams, Mark Rypien, and Jim Plunkett.
How many of those since 2003? How many of those without a dominant defense?
There’s a reason it’s called “Dilfering” your way to a ring. Not many Dilfers in recent history.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
I guess if you narrow the search parameters enough you can prove anything.
ie. The last two Super Bowl participants had lousy offensive lines, therefore you don’t need a good offensive line to get to the Super Bowl.
Those teams were only set back years because they kept giving the QB too many chances to fail.
There is something to be said for courageous and decisive leadership that recognizes when they have made a mistake, deal with it, then move on.
In the three cases you mention the franchises kept trying to force the guy in and then he would drag the team back. If he was on the bench he would just be an embarrassment to the GM and Coach who picked him and not screwing up the rest of the team.
What was wrong with Emtman?
I never seen him play but from what my folks tell me he was fairly good but injured all the time.
Holmgren would have drafted Crabtree.
by Fearless Frog on Jan 21, 2010 12:33 PM EST up reply actions
exactly..
he was good for 9 games into his rookie year…then wound up playing 20 games in his first 3 years.
Emtman was as hyped up as Suh.
Not saying he’s overrated…but with a DT, a position where one wrong fall seems likely on every block….its just too much to call a DT a franchise savior.

Oh, I agree.
It isn’t a coincidence that the best QBs in the league are on teams with the best records, while teams with dominant DTs are not necessarily even legit playoff contenders. You can build a team around a QB, but definitely not around a DT.
Holmgren would have drafted Crabtree.

I think it depends on the team
And this can go both ways with a stud QB and other role players, or the other way. Yes, if you take Peyton away the Colts would be an average team at best. Manning is a once in a generation QB and is an exception to most every draft rule. However, the flip side is Trent Dilfer who was an average QB with the Ravens but was surrounded by a stud defense and a solid RB and WR.

For the Giants...
McClain’s always the ideal pick. I’d love if he falls.
As for the real pick…could be DL like Brian Price. Most likely pick is safety.
OLB is something they could wait on. I think Bowman has top 15 talent, but he’s a risky character.
It gets late real early out here....
Bowman
I thought it was interesting that you traded up to get him at the top of the 2nd in the big 7-rounder.
A lot of people are picking LBs for Philly. Last year was more of an injury situation than lack of talent. Their LBs always kill the Giants.
Wasn't really a trade up for Bowman specifically..
I actually had a late night whim to trade up for Jahvid Best….
Tho..it probably did work out correctly cuz I could’ve seen a few teams grabbing Bowman.

McClain
No way McClain slips by Denver AND Miami he won’t last past #12. Both of those teams need LB help. And why would Denver take a QB when (A) they already have Orton and will most likely tender him in the offseason and (B) they have more pressing needs defensively?

Re: The Chiefs.
Carr and Flowers are both good and young.
The real need on the defense is in the center, not on the edges. As such, the Chiefs targets in the first round will be Eric Berry or Rolando McClain.
Berry, beside a healthy Jarrad Page, helps them against both the run and in coverage, which instantly improves their two already good Corners.
If he’s already gone at the #5 pick (and I’m not convinced he will be), they’ll go with McClain to line up beside aging veteran Mike Vrabel.
If both McClain and Berry are gone, I imagine that their third option will be Russell Okung.
There’s been talk (by ‘voice of the Chiefs’ Mitch Holthus) that picking Okung would instantly improve their entire Offensive Line with a single pick. If they take Okung, he suggested, they could move Branden Albert to Left Guard, Brian Waters to Center and Rudy Niswanger to Right Guard which is an upgrade to every one of those positions.
But there is no way — NO WAY — they go CB with that #5 pick.
Absolutely correct. Flowers is one of the true young talents at CB in the NFL and with another season or two could be among the best. Carr is a good number 2 with all the physical tools necessary, just needs some coaching. It makes sense (at this point) that the Chiefs would go with one of the three you listed (Berry-McClain-Okung).

I like the Eagles drafting Bowman from PSU but...
If the Eagles traded Mcnabb they could get a first round pick.
Then they could trade up by giving the 24 or whatever spot the Eagles get from the trade of Mcnabb and next years 1st round pick to move into the top 5 and get Berry, who I think is the second best player in the draft after Suh

Miami-McClain
As A Giants fan growing up in the 80’s, I always feel obligated to jump in to share the Parcells way. Which is this: Passing the ball is for wimps. If you can’t run the ball or stop the run, you’re not a man. You’re looking at a guy who turned a blocking fullback (Carthon) into an offensive coordinator. He drafted Pepper Johnson and Tedy Bruschi. Coached Carson. Was happy with Lionel Manuel as his #1 receiver. McClain is the kind of player he loves.
It keeps getting brought up that he once drafted a WR (Terry Glenn) in the 1st round. Interestingly enough, according to his wikipedia page, that pick was Kraft’s. Parcells wanted defense, and his lack of control over personnel was a major reason he left the team.
It is a passing league now
If Bryant is the BPA,(meaning McClain and Kindle are gone) then I feel that is the route the Dolphins will take, however I do not see Parcells passing on McClain, no chance in hell that happens.

I'm sorry, but you're stuck in the 80s.
Wake up and smell the roses. Defense-first, running the ball is finished, and has been the second Polian pressured the NFL into approving those pass-happy rules which makes defense at a natural disadvantage. Look at every playoff team in the NFL. Every single one with the exception of the Jets, who still invested a massive resource into a QB, have excellent passing attacks and great QBs. Kurt Warner, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Joe Flacco, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Donovan McNabb, Tony Romo, Brett Favre, and Phillip Rivers can pass with the best of them. Hell, even someone like Matt Schaub just threw for the 6th most yards in a season in NFL history. The Jets could win the Super Bowl but that still wouldn’t mean defense/run is the best approach to winning, because if they didn’t face two teams that mailed it in at the end of the season, they don’t even have a winning record.
There also isn’t a single team I can think in the playoffs that has a dominant DT. Haloti Ngata is the closest thing to one, and the Ravens lost when the offense struggled to move the ball. Therefore, if the Rams feel that Clausen can be an above-average QB, they should easily take him over Suh even if they think he can be the best DT in the NFL.

Not to some coaches. Parcells is unlikely to change. That’s why he still has a blocking TE and FB on his team. Parcells is simply going to target different players than Holmgren, for example. I am making no judgements as to right or wrong.

Jets have a chance to win the SB this year...
Giants, while not as run heavy in the playoffs as some people think, were basically built around running and defense.
Steelers in 2006 were run and defense. Tampa—run and defense. The Patriots their first SB win were all run and defense, and then of course Baltimore in 2001.
Running and defense build teams..not pass happy teams, still can and do win.

The 2006 Steelers and 2007 Giants barely made the playoffs.
Tampa, Baltimore, and New England’s SB runs were before Polian’s rules turned the NFL into a pass-or-die team. Even if the Jets win the SB, it doesn’t change the fact that 11/12 teams have great QBs/passing offenses.
Holmgren would have drafted Crabtree.

A potent passing offense almost directly correlates with winning games.
Technically, the playoffs and Super Bowl are just regular football games. There aren’t any special rule changes in the playoffs and there isn’t anything magical about the month of December that would suddenly make rush/defense/Martyball a better strategy to win. And the Super Bowl itself is too small of a sample size to make such sweeping assertions about what strategy is most effective such as the 07 SB, because if that game was played 10 times it seems like an overwhelming likelihood the Pats would have won at least 6 ior 7 times.
Holmgren would have drafted Crabtree.

That first Patriot SB winner could not run the ball very well.
They averaged 3.8 YPC [24th] for 1800 yards [13th]. Their defence was ranked 24th against the pass and 19th against the run. Their pass offence was ranked 22nd. All these rankings are based on yards. Their O line gave up 46 sacks too.
The three things they did very well was score points [sixth], stop the other team from scoring [sixth], and win the turnover battle [+7 for ninth].
Seems to me like they did it with mirrors. This was a very smart, opportunistic, and well coached team that did not make many mistakes, and made other teams make the mistakes that would cost them the game.
I don’t think there is much argument that this is one of the worst teams to ever win a Super Bowl. I don’t mean that as a slam either. It is a compliment when you can beat a “stacked” team with lessor talent.
Seattle won't take Anthony Davis
The Seahawks just brought in Alex Gibbs to coach the offensive line. Every single Gibbs team in the history of his career have been based around smaller, agile lineman that can be used in his zone blocking scheme. It’s not even that Davis is just much bigger than the usual prospects used by Gibbs, he’s also a terrible fit in the ZBS. It won’t happen.
Lions pick
Having a safety tandem of Berry and Delmas is a luxury this poor Lions team just can’t have.
Last I checked, you can have 2 safties on the field. I have a feeling that the Lions will take BPA and go with Berry over McCoy if St. Louis takes Suh. It would go a long way to helping the 32nd ranked pass defense
Yes, it's true! Teams can have 2 safeties!
With the 32nd-ranked pass defense, having 2 great safeties who fit isn’t a luxury……it’s pretty much a necessity……and it sure beats a DT (McCoy) who doesn’t fit.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
Eagles Draft
We don’t need Navorro, I think trading the pick for additional 2nd round picks would help, because we need to get more depth in all secondary areas. I would like to see Cromartie in green, seeing as he isn’t getting along wit San Diego management. That way you can draft a Nate Allen, get Cromartie, and a couple sleeper DE picks.
Mcclain
No way dolphins pick Dez Bryant parcells dosent draft recievers and wont start. they need to land anquan boldin in a trade or some big time receiver. If Mcclain can slip and hopefully he does thats the dolphins man we need him. Porter hopefully taylor crowder and mcclain in a 3-4 ran by mike nolan sounds good.
I will throw myself out of a skyscraper if the Niners waste the 16/17 pick on Williams
With Bulaga and Campbell still on the board. Bulaga could be just as dominating a run blocker at RT as Williams and can actually play LT without getting embarrassed.
Gimme 1 round!
Makes sense.
Campbell and Bulaga are far better prospects than Trent Williams.
Holmgren would have drafted Crabtree.

Just what should the Redskins aim for.
I think they should go for now quality over future. Because as we have all come to see the redskins future talents rarely ever pan out. They have been known to through there high draft picks right into the thick of things. Which is not a bad thing but the guys they draft later never really reach the potential or they get rid of them for some other young guy or costly stud. Key example Antonio Pierce.
This draft the redskins should focus on these left tackle, conerback, and defensive tackle.
Now I say conerback because Rogers would be a much better safety than a corner in my eyes. He has the size to play the position and won’t be burnt as much on pass plays. Plus its better to have a guy who knows the secondary back there than some rookie. Drafting Hayden(cb) would be big here. He is a great cover corner with big play potential. Not much of a Champ Baily but more of a Marcus Trufant.
Offensive line. The run game and offense line will prosper under Shannahan. So get the age out and get the young in. Russell Okung its the best thing the redskins can hope for. They get him and they are set for ten years. Him and Mike Williams will prove to be a great asset to the team. Both in good shape with a great coaching staff. Than draft a guard later (3)or(4). In round 6 and 7 they should go for projects in the interior line ©(g).
Now this is only possible if they trade players. I’m thinking Betts for a 3rd or 4th, Griffen for 5th or 6th. Would really like to trade Haynsworth for a 1st and 4th (I say 4th because of the horrible season he had. After that they would have to trade a 2nd,3rd, and maybe 5th to get hayden which would be worth it. I mean look at Reeves, also with that trade they should get a 1st and 7th in return. the 7th would be a kicker. Now they have the chance to get people to fill holes in the draft without going broke in the free agency.
only way they're' getting rid of Haynesworth is by cutting him....
no one’s gonna give up a thing for him and that contract.
You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you are going, because you might not get there

Regarding #9
Being a Bills fan and an Irish fan, I’m so biased in favor of Clausen that I’m busy convincing myself that sure, the offensive line from last year’s opener will be perfectly fine. Of course, that’s probably not true, so I’d love it if they could, somehow, have it both ways.
Unfortunately, I don’t know if my plan has any chance of working — who in the first 20 teams would straight-up trade their pick for Marshawn Lynch? Even with Roscoe Parrish and a broken goalpost thrown in. So they’d have to give up a shot at a second-round receiver/LB at the very least. They’d probably be able to get Bulaga in that case, though.
