East-West Shrine Game open thread
If you're around today and checking out the Shrine Game, stop by and give some thoughts on who is participating.
Several sites have been in Orlando watching practices, where the real player evaluation takes place. Obviously, I have not been there.
So, if you're interested in some recaps, here are some good ones:

Arrowhead Pride: Coaching staffs have heavy Chiefs presence
After the jump is summation of six guys who I think helped themselves the most during the week of practice.
Freddie Barnes | WR | Bowling Green
Each practice report about Barnes is that he caught just about everything thrown in his direction. High passes, low passes, Barnes caught them. He’s not merely a product of the Bowling Green spread offense. Barnes has excellent hands. Still, his speed numbers will knock him down the draft. But he’ll make some team extremely happy.
Rodger Stafford | OT | Indiana
Stafford was never really all that impressive this season. He was a solid player, but was exposed by Iowa’s Adrian Clayborn. But at Shrine Game practice Stafford reportedly looked very good on his feet with technically sound footwork. Stafford will need to get much stronger, but his stock is up after a week of practices.
Torell Troup | DT | Central Florida
Quietly, Troup closed out his season playing extremely well for the Knights. He kept that momentum going into this week. Troup was said to be a load to stop, which is expected from a player who is 314 pounds. But Troup’s quickness and agility earned him rave reviews in Orlando.
John Skelton | QB | Fordham
In a week where every other quarterback looked bad, Skelton looked passable. While he was never phenomenal, Skelton was said to show good poise and really came alive during two-minute drills.
Doug Worthington | DT | Ohio State
Worthington has received a lot of praise this week for his tireless work ethic. For a player who is a backup the next level, work ethic is something players like Worthington need to display.
Keith Toston | RB | Oklahoma State
Coming into the 2009 season, Toston was a backup. But he came along and was one of the most productive running backs in the nation. In practices he showed off quick feet and good balance working through the hole.

who do you think needs a big game
Because of their weak practice week. I heard BYU’s Max Hall was inconsistent all week.
The game is kind of an afterthought, as far as talent evaluation goes. That’s because the limited defensive schemes and how short of time the guys have to learn things. The real big stuff happened during the week.
But, obviously, if some guy comes in and lights it up, it can’t hurt. I’ve heard a lot that Hall has trouble dropping back.

This is from ESPN Scouts on Tevaseu
Hard to believe the 6-2, 340-pound Tevaseu could go unnoticed, but he was being overshadowed by some other players until today. He’s stout against the run and does a good job of extending his arms and getting a good push. On inside run period, he got underneath Washington State OL Kenny Alfred and walked him 3 yards backward. He is raw as a pass-rusher, but he can collapse the pocket. He’s a little too big right now and he’ll need to lose a few pounds or conditioning will be an issue, but he has the tools to be an excellent 2-gap defender.
He is a squatty guy who has a really thick build. The 6-2, 340-pounder was tough to get movement on and anchors well. While he doesn’t have elite foot quickness, he has enough quickness to make plays. He uses his hands well and right now he is really tough to block. He’s a two-game guy worth keeping an eye on.

Sounds like he could be a sleeper in the Red Bryant mold.
Big, talented, and powerful, but he might take a few years to develop.
Jeremy, this is pretty much my opinion of Tevaseu. He’s a scheme guy.

good stuff, thanks
I read that he weighed in at 420 when he was recruited…. and was down to 335 by the time he was starting at UNLV (after a transfer). Sounds like he knows how to get his head in the game, and get right, even if it takes a while. It’ll be interesting to see if anyone takes a chance on him…

Mocking the Draft: Your NFL Draft source.
yea...
cuz throwing a bunch of talent on a team ALWAYS pans out…

Wow..ND got a bunch of top recruits at skill positions.
Talent at the skill position is absolutely useless if the QB can’t bring it out of them…which Clausen did.

Again
What did Clausen do that made any Notre Dame player a better football player?
Tate got yards after the catch. Floyd made highlight catches on Clausen’s overthrows. Rudolph got himself open over the middle.
One more time here: What did Jimmy Clausen do as a football player to make them better?
Mocking the Draft: Your NFL Draft source.
?
you can make an argument that any skill position player makes his QB better…
All a QB does is throw the ball.
If a WR doesn’t catch…the QB “sucks”.
What Clausen did was be a QB. That’s what he did.
I dunno what sort of answer your looking for..but what exactly could a QB do other then make all the throws to make his players better?

The only questions on Quarless
will be about his personality/attitude. He showed some great promise at Penn State, but his attitude and some off-field issues kept him from ever being a big-name tight end in college. Some of the reports from the Shrine Game practices seemed to have shown the same thing – had some great showings in practice, but he just gave the presence of not wanting to be there at practice.
