Tebow among struggling players on Day 1 of Senior Bowl week

Everyone who watched the South team practice today witnessed a poor performance from Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.

"Tebow just looks uncomfortable taking snaps from under center," Will Spencer of Draft Breakdown tweeted earlier today.

The crux of Tebow's problems are taking snaps from under center and dropping back. At one point, Spencer noted, Tebow fumbled three consecutive snaps in 7-on-7 drills. Tebow can be as nice as he wants, but that is unacceptable for an NFL quarterback.

Other observers noted that Tebow looked sloppy in his backpedal, but had good footwork when he was set.

The Senior Bowl is about much more than Tebow, so here are some other players who struggled today:

- Cincinnati wide receiver Mardy Gilyard, playing for the North squad, had several dropped passes today. For a player who measured in at 5'11 1/2 and 179 pounds, Gilyard's hands have to be almost flawless.

- You know this one by now: Alabama's Terrence Cody is fat. How someone who is auditioning for millions of dollars in contract money shows up that out of shape is ridiculous. This is a failure by not only Cody, but his agent.

- Wisconsin defensive end/outside linebacker O'Brien Schofield was a player to watch this week after doing well at the Shrine Game. He was hurt being blocked by Vladimir Ducasse of Massachusetts and his status is unknown.

- Unless they are injured, big mistakes were made by LSU receiver Brandon LaFell, Southern Cal offensive lineman Charles Brown, TCU defensive lineman Jerry Hughes and Oklahoma offensive lineman Trent Williams. Each dropped out of the Senior Bowl.

The problem for those four is that they're not premiere prospects. A good Senior Bowl could have gotten each into the first round. Williams and Brown still may project there, but LaFell and Hughes probably have no shirt at first-round money.

That's it for now. More later after I get home. From the bar. OK, no guarantees on more content.

Can’t say I’m really surprised about Tebow struggling from under center. He hasn’t taken a snap under center in at least 4 years.

Gilyard is the one who surprises me. He made a lot of great catches at Cincinnati.

He didn't

Take snaps from under center in high school playing for Nease. Really I don’t know if he ever has. He played in a wing t early, but he played tight end. Changed schools and has been in the spread ever since.

Fumbled snaps arent always the fault of the QB......

there is some rhythm and continuity needed……….go grab and buddy and start practicing taking snaps out back and see how you do…….

LOL…..

He’s gonna be fine.

Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch too, I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work. - Peter Gibbons

Come on, he is a QB for crying out loud. Have to be able to take a snap under center.

I don’t watch much college football. Are you telling me that Tebow has never taken a snap under center during his entire career?

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 25, 2010 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

I would say it was somewhere around 10-20

so he does not have alot of experience taking snaps under center

its not just about taking a snap under center............

I dont know if you’ve ever taken a snap from center, but I have……………….there is some practice you need………..and every center snaps it different………..had he been working with this guy for months then maybe I could see your argument.

Are you saying that a QB needs months of practice with each center he works with?

Wouldn’t we expect about a billion fumbled snaps at the Pro Bowl, then?

what if your center gets injured

if a center gets injured mid-game at any level, what do you expect will happen? you expect nothing to happen, but i guess in reality there will be a ton of fumbles

Philly lost their center for a few week

and didn’t have him for the two Cow games. don’t tell me that didn’t effect Mcnabb

I getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

by Steel in FL on Jan 26, 2010 9:26 AM EST up reply actions

shouldn't he have been taking snaps from under center since the day after beating Cincy?

I’m going to chalk this up to being much ado about nothing, but I was expecting him to come out and impress the heck out of people. I guess maybe it just hasn’t been long enough since the end of the college season.

Great to see Tebow screw up.

After seeing ESPN kissing his ass for the last couple of years, it would be great to see him bomb in the Senior Bowl just so it will shut them all up. The guy is just a system quarterback who is a product of Florida getting all of the best recruits.

Gee, Tebow looking awful in the Sr. Bowl? Whoda thunk it?!

Between his newfound problems under center, those awful mechanics and the questions about whether or not he can hit receivers that aren’t as wide open as the ones he threw to (often making the receivers work for it!) at Florida…

well he didn't look awful in the senior bowl, seeing as the senior bowl hasn't happened yet...

…he had a rough day of practice, speciifcally in taking snaps. apparently his footwork was good stepping into his throw, which I personally feel would be tougher to improve than catching the ball that the center hands to you, or backing up.
