Dallas Cowboys team needs

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have had a very successful season. But these Cowboys have question marks. Below are some areas they could improve on.

1. Offensive Tackle

- Flozell Adams has not had a good season. He is starting to show signs of aging and the penalties are enough to drive any coach and fan insane. There is some thought that Doug Free could slide to the left side but that is a shaky option for a team with Super Bowl aspirations. This isn’t a very deep draft for left tackles but look for the Cowboys to try and get a project pick.

2. Safety

- Gerald Sensabaugh and Alan Ball are not the long-term solution at this important position. Depending on how the draft shakes out this could be a position they fill with their first round pick.

3. Linebacker

- Keith Brooking is getting up there in age and Bradie James is a good run defender but is a liability in pass coverage. The Cowboys have the luxury of taking the best play available when they pick in the first round. So they could use this pick on either one of these three positions.

2. Fans and coaches like Sensebaugh. I promise you he’ll get resigned long term.

Alan Ball did a good job standing in for Ken Hamlin when he was injured, but rookie Mike Hamlin is the future at the position.

3. Jason Williams IS the heir apparent to Keith Brooking. Williams is 246 and runs a 4.49 40 and does 26 bench reps. He has incredible physical ability, and came on strong towards the end of training camp.

Our biggest need right now is wide receiver. Roy Williams contract is structured in such a way that it makes it really easy for him to cut him with 19 million of his bonus money being in options. We need someone opposite Austin.

I'll fix it for you

1. Wide Receiver (although Kevin Ogletree could be the answer)

2. OL (someone who could play tackle and guard)

3. DL

by quincyyyyy on Jan 4, 2010 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

Ogletree is nothing to write home about

by TheRealSlimShady on Jan 4, 2010 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I guess Miles Austin 3 years ago wasn't either

Same with Romo 5 years ago.

Ogletree has displayed quickness, speed, great hands, and is a natural route runner. He has talent.

by quincyyyyy on Jan 4, 2010 6:30 PM EST up reply actions

There;s too much talent in this draft

with Bryant, Lafell, Tate, Benn..etc., that will be there for the taking tho.

Yea, Ogletree has talent…Crayton’s fairly steady…

But out of Roy, Ogletree and Crayton…probably better off dipping into the WR talent of this year.

I agree that we should draft a WR high

but I still think Ogletree has the tools to be a starter

no doubt...

but there’s nothing wrong with getting someone like Tate to throw in the mix right?

Austin, Ogletree on the outside, Tate in the slot (this sentence is PAUSE worthy..)

In fact he is going in my next Cowboys mock

How about Jacoby Ford?

I’m not sure where he’s projected, but I think he goes either 2nd or 3rd. His speed might get into the 1st, though.

I’d like to see Roy gone, Austin moved to the 1 spot, open up the 2 spot to Ogletree, or some other speed WR acquisition (say Ford), and keep Crayton in the 3 slot spot. Then bring in guys to churn all the other spots.

Hamlin's not a sure thing

By any stretch. Relying on him can get you in trouble. Same with Jason Williams… while his potential is exciting, he was a 3rd rounder for a reason. I’ve read reports stating he looks ‘clueless’ in practices.
I’d have no problem with the team drafting a safety or linebacker in the first two rounds. I’d prefer a versatile O-lineman or receiver, but wouldn’t write off those two positions.

by Conjunction on Jan 4, 2010 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

Those reports came at the beginning of training camp
I’ve read reports stating he looks ‘clueless’ in practices.

After the second preseaon game Wade said he was getting it.

And anyone you draft is “not a sure thing” either. So I don’t think that is a valid point. And Hamlin had a strong training camp, so so far he is more of a sure thing (albeit not that much more) than someone we could draft.

Oops, hit enter too soon

Hamlin is an interesting guy to keep an eye on, but very few regard him as a great prospect. If we have a chance to add a guy like Morgan Burnett, for example, I expect the FO would so so without hesitation.

by Conjunction on Jan 4, 2010 7:21 PM EST up reply actions

He wasn't considered a great prospect because he doesn't time well

but the guy is a gamer. He had a great year his senior season at Clemson. Hamlin plays like a great player, even though he doesn’t time like one.

Mike Hamlin is a strong safety and the heir apparent to Sensabaugh.

We need a free safety to be the heir apparent to Ken Hamlin. Enough of Patrick Watkins (only good for special teams) and Alan Ball (who was decent but not starter-worthy, and also played back up at CB).

I've watched a few 'Boys games...

this year and i’ve been really impressed by Sensabaugh. Every game he appeared to be all over the field and he seemed to add emotional fire to the secondary. A playmaker ball-hawk, or a S who can play man to man with TEs would be a good addition, but a young OT and DE would seem to be of more value.

Talking about emotion and leadership, Brooking has been sensational for the Cowboys. He’s undersized for the 3-4, hes slow but that experience and leadership is undraftable. Kinda makes you think what that D would be like if they had signed Ray Lewis.

A big WR with steady hands would also aid Romo (well a WR who runs chrisp route and has steady hands would help)

by Sheffieldbengal on Jan 4, 2010 8:19 PM EST reply actions

Very good assessment

Sensi would have had more ints, but he has dropped a couple due to playing with a cast on his arm for part of the year.

I think after Austin came on, we were hoping Roy would be that big receiver, who would move the chains. Unfortunately, he is being outplayed by our backups. It has gotten to the point where you just feel bad for the guy.

Anyhow, how did Roy L. Williams look at the beginning of the year? I figured he would do better with Zimmer, since he had his best years under him.

Roy Williams

looked insanely good. He was playing so well, he was a field general, he motivated the secondary and the whole team crushed any RB or TE who dared touch the ball. He just seemed to provide that vet. calm and understanding which just steadied a very young defence. I really hope the guy will come back next year – he said he really liked the locker room and would like to be back – but his arm injury may cause his career to be over.

just reminds me that sucess can be as much to do with systems then with natural talent and ability.

Now that Roy is gone and Crocker is injured our secondary is young, inexperienced and in regards to Nelson… plain not good enough for the NFL. Hopefully Crocker comes back. But it highlights that the Bengals either need another vet. S or need to draft one.

I agree.

OLine is the biggest issue for the Cowboys. Good stuff.

Only definite keepers (and some are a little iffy) are:

Austin (DUH), Preston, Holland, Spears, Bowen, Siavii, Ball, and Sensabaugh.

If we can find better than Preston, Holland, Bowen, Siavii, or Ball, I’d be all for replacing them.

I want to see the backs of:
Hurd, Proctor, and Watkins for sure.

Everybody else is up in the air, IMO.

OL

I have another post on the o-line that isn’t finished yet, but the gist of it is, of the backups only Free is ready to be a starter (maybe only RT) and Brewster is the only legitimate development player. The other guys have at least 4-5 years in the league, and we know exactly what they are (and are not) capable of.

If i were McQuistan, Preston, Proctor or Holland, I wouldn’t be making any major purchases or signing a long term housing lease.

safety

I’d rather release Ken Hamlin and at least franchise Sensabaugh..

by MicThaRock on Jan 19, 2010 11:09 PM EST reply actions

here's my take

1. Completely agree. We need OL help now. Disagree on Free. He will be the LT for the next 5+ years. He did great on Allen after he came in cold. Allen got one sack courtesy of Witten. We will draft 4 OL MINIMUM.

2. Agree we need a safety. However, Sensa is the man. He’s not going anywhere. I look for K Hamlin to get cut this year to make way for a draft pick (Taylor Mays?) or M Hamlin.

3. Not even close. We drafted so many LBs last year, unless there is a superstud that drops, I don’t see it happening. Getting B. Williams, J. Williams and Hodge healthy this year is going to be like having 1 & 1/2 drafts. LB is a huge strength for us right now. IMO we have 6 LBs that could start for Philly.

4. If Golden Tate drops to us, then I say get him. If not, get a freakish athlete in round 6 and let him learn for a few years.
