Mock Draft 1.0
1. St. Louis- DT- Ndamukon Suh- Neb
- Yes the Rams need a quarterback but players like Suh can take over a game. Can the same be said for Clausen or Bradford? Suh is a can’t miss prospect and St. Louis cannot miss on this pick. Suh will immediately make the rest of the players on that defense better.
2. Detroit- DT- Gerald McCoy- Okl
- Missing out on Suh will be a big disappointment for the Lions but McCoy will be a nice addition to a terrible Lions defense. Some will argue that Berry is the better player but the Lions really need help along the defensive front. Having a safety tandem of Berry and Delmas is a luxury this poor Lions team just can’t have.
3. Tampa Bay- DE- Derrick Morgan- Ga Tech
- The Tampa Bay defensive line needs an infusion of talent. Morgan will have an impact with his pass rush but also his ability to play the run. Berry would be a nice pick here but Tampa Bay will elect to stand pat with their secondary. Secondary’s benefit from a good pass rush and that is why Tampa will pass on Berry.
4. Washington- OT- Russell Okung- Okl St
- Shanahan will be tempted to take the sexy pick with either Clausen or Bradford but he knows that a strong offensive line is the key to a good offense. Shanahan has made due with quarterbacks like Jake Plummer so maybe Jason Campbell sticks around. However, look for the Redskins to add a quarterback later in the draft.
5. Kansas City- S- Eric Berry- Tenn
- The Chief fans are running through the streets naked because Berry fell to them. Berry is arguably the best player in the draft and he fell to pick #5. Unfortunately for Berry the safety position is just not valued as much as tackles and a good pass rush. Berry’s misfortune is Kansas City’s gain.
6. Seattle- OT- Anthony Davis- Rut
- The athletic Davis is going to really impress teams with his workouts. He has a lot of upside and offensive line is a major need for Seattle. A major factor with this pick is going to be the hiring of a new GM. A new GM could look to go with a quarterback for the future.
7. Cleveland- CB- Joe Haden- Fla
- Cleveland has a lot of needs but a good cover cornerback could help the defense tremendously. I don’t see Holmgren drafting a quarterback, look for him to either trade for a quarterback or develop one of quarterbacks on the existing roster. A sleeper pick here might be C.J. Spiller. Spiller has tons of speed and has been compared to Chris Johnson so depending on 40 time numbers Spiller could sky rocket up team’s draft boards.
8. Oakland- DT- Brian Price- UCLA
- Offensive line and quarterback are the biggest need for the Raiders. Unfortunately, owner Al Davis doesn’t see quarterback as a need. This is highlighted with the talk about replacing Coach Tom Cable. It would be a real stretch to choose any of the available tackles so defensive line is the next position to upgrade. Unless you see the Raiders admitting a mistake last year and choose Dez Bryant with this pick (highly unlikely).
9. Buffalo- QB- Jimmy Clausen- ND
- Fitzpatrick and Brohm are not the long term solution at the position. A left tackle would be a nice pick but there are not worthy of the #9 pick. Clausen will immediately be the best quarterback on the roster and could start from day 1. This might be a little low for the first quarterback to come off the board but injuries (Clausen-toe, Bradford-shoulder) are going to limit the quarterbacks’ chances of impressing at workouts. While players like Price, Haden, Morgan, and Davis will all see their stock rise due to being able to display their athletic ability.
10. (X) Denver (from Chicago)- QB- Sam Bradford- Okl
- Kyle Orton had a nice season but he is not the future quarterback for this team. Bradford fits McDaniel’s system. McDaniel’s offense is all about precision and runs a lot of shotgun sets, which are both strong suits for Bradford.
11. (X) Jacksonville- DE- Jason Pierre-Paul- USF
- Jacksonville missed with Derrick Harvey and Quenton Groves but they still need a pass rush and will hope Pierre-Paul could provide this. Jacksonville has proved in the past that they will go with need over best available. If the Jags win the coin toss and pick before Denver they will still go with Pierre-Paul. Coach Del Rio is in a win now mode and a quarterback of the future doesn’t provide that.
12. Miami- WR- Dez Bryant- Okl St
- Dez will be the playmaker Ted Ginn Jr. is not. Having someone to stretch the field and make plays in the passing game will really open things up for Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams.
13. San Francisco- S- Earl Thomas- Tex
- Coach Singletary will fight the urge to go with hard hitting Taylor Mays but in the end he will see Thomas is much more of a playmaker. Thomas is much better in the passing game where San Francisco needs a lot of help.
14. Seattle(from Denver)- RB- C.J. Spiller- Clem
- Julius Jones is not the answer and Justin Forsett is a good complementary back but Spiller could be a major game changer. Seattle needs some offensive fire power and Spiller gives them something they lack, unlimited speed.
15. New York Giants- LB- Rolando McClain- Ala
- How lucky are the Giants? McClain is a top 10 talent that slips to No. 15 because middle linebacker is not a major need of the teams ahead of them. McClain takes over for Antonio Pierce, whose injury and legal troubles will force him out of New York.
16. (X) San Francisco (from Carolina)- OT- Trent Williams- Okl
- Trent Williams slid to No. 16 because he may never develop into a left tackle. But this is not an issue for the 49ers who have Joe Staley at left tackle and will use Trent Williams at right tackle where he could be dominant.
17. (X) Tennessee- LB- Navarro Bowman- PSU
- Bowman will be a major contributor right away for the Titians. There are a lot of questions about Keith Bullocks career and Bowman can be his replacement.
18. Pittsburgh- S- Taylor Mays- USC
- Mays fits right into the Steelers mentality. He also fits a need for the Steelers. With Ryan Clark injury prone Mays can come right in and add another intimidating safety to compliment Troy Polamalu.
19. (X) Atlanta- CB- Patrick Robinson- Fla St
- Atlanta needs help at the corner position and Robinson is going rise after the combine results. Anyone that could run down Noel Devine is really fast. Not only is Robinson fast he can also cover and support in the running game.
20. (X) Houston- DT- Dan Williams- Tenn
- Houston needs a replacement for Dan Cody and Williams can fill that role. Houston may have some defensive back and offensive line needs but Williams is the best player available at the positions of need.
(X) Order to be determined by coin flip

I don't agree with a lot of your logic.
McClain drops to the Giants at #15 because no one ahead of him needs him? How about Denver and Miami?
Clausen falls to Buffalo at #9? I think St. Louis will take him at #1 or if they pass, either Washington at #4 or Seattle at #6. He played all year with that toe injury. Zero impact on his draft stock.
just a little insite to the McClain thing… Patrick Willis was selected #11 and he was a much better prospect than McClain. Also the injuries are going to limit their workouts. So i am saying that both Clausen and Bradford needed to have great workouts to push them up to the #1 spot. Stafford was a good prosect but his workouts are what pushed him to #1.

The Dolphins would not pass on McClain

if the draft were to fall this way I wouldn’t really be upset with Dez but knowing Parcells you are probably right .. the phins wouldn’t pass on McClain lol

McClain is probably the ideal pick.

facepalm
Bills fan? In Colorado? It's more likely than you think.
Seriously. The Bills need LBs of any variety. Middle, outside, inside, center left. They probably pick a QB if one of the top ones falls, but that has got to be pretty unlikely. Personally, I’d like to see an OT or a LB, but it all depends on how the draft plays out. That’s the great thing about having so many needs, you can find whatever you need. * sigh *

Cmon...that's an overstatement for the entire position.
Tanard Jackson absolutely does not suck, nor does Jermaine Phillips if he could stay healthy. Sabby Piscitelli is a huge liability however.

Seconded
Taylor Mays could slide into the 2nd round. He’s big and fast but plays dumb, takes bad angles, doesn’t always wrap up tackles, can’t catch.
In other words, the Raiders will be much more interested than any other team.
In addition, the Steelers need a center fielder to play opposite Polamalu. They already have their playmaker at the safety position.
You can find a steady, smart, solid free safety in round 2-4 who still has more athleticism than a ryan clark. You don’t need a 1st round FS — and certainly not Taylor Mays.
Sticking strictly to your draft, I do like a number of the choices. And i think the Steelers would pick either of the two you have listed on the board at 19 and 20 at 18 before they look at Mays.

Thirded
(is that even a word)
We’ll take Williams or Cody
I getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.
Cody is to NT
as Mays is to S.
All hype.
Cody is too fat, too slow, too unathletic. I don’t want him. Tomlin will want someone more athletic than Hampton, who annoys him because of his weight problem. And Cody is worse.
Reed the scouting report at this site. He’s not a first rounder.

anybody watched the game last night
if only we can convince BA to , and if we draft Cody, we can use him as a FB too.. Holy Crap!!! Team him up with Legursky and Redman or Tank in the Backfield.. I need to think of a cool nickname for that Jumbo Set
I feel we will probably target a S in rd 2
this draft is soo deep this year. No need to rush for picks(you heard Al Davis) We need a NT if Hampton is gone. Dan Williams or Cody out of Bama. Here is a potential thought. We draft a DE or a couple of DT for possible change to a 4-3
Bradford and the Broncos.
Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery on Sam Bradford’s shoulder. He also happens to be a senior consultant for the Redskins. Washington has a new, pass-happy Head Coach with final say in player personel and no proven starter at QB. If they pass on him at #4, then that’ll be a huge red flag for other teams. At very least, he’ll go past Denver where they don’t desperately need a QB, especially not one like a potentially damaged Bradford. The Broncos would be better off taking Dez Bryant (to potentially replace Marshall), Rolondo McClain and Dan Williams (to continue building the 3-4 defense) or even Taylor Mays (great upside)…
"A player who conjugates a verb in the first person singular cannot be part of the squad, he has to conjugate the verb in the first person plural. We. We want to conquer. We are going to conquer. Using the word 'I' when you're in a group makes things complicated." ~ Wanderley Luxemburgo, 1999
I doubt Tampa would choose Derrick Morgan at #3
They need a big DT, not an end. If Suh and McCoy are both gone at #3, somebody will probably want QB Claussen before he slides to Washington at #4. Would be smart to trade down a little and still possibly end up with S Eric Berry.
Agree that DE is not as big a need
And that DT is a greater need for the D-line. And if Suh and McCoy are gone, Bucs should consider other positional needs and wait for the 2nd to get DT there.
But is Safety that high a need compared to OT? Trueblood has been penalty-prone his whole pro career (as short as it is) and if a better OT can be had, especially that high in the draft, then I’d go that route. Veteran OTs of value rarely hit the Free Agency market, so the draft is the best place to get them…

Tackles
Last year they needed offensive line help and selected tackles w/ their first two picks
Jon Dove
Because they were at the top of their board when they selected?
Monroe was clearly the best pick at the time, whether by need or value. Also, outside of Byrd, please tell me any 2nd round pick taken after Britton who performed any better than Britton did?

Suh over Clausen
I have to say that i am a little shocked that the poll turned out the way it did. In my opinion Suh is the best choice and thats what I believe the Rams will do but they really really need a quarterback and from other posts i have seen a lot of people feel that Clausen will be really good. I have my doubts about clausen.
Jon Dove
the funny thing...
is that while people almost ‘matter of factly’ say that Big Suh is the best DT prospect in the past 20 years….they don;t realize that Clausen..might just be the best QB prospect in the past 20 years.
I admit..I usually see the ND helmet, talent around him, Charlie Weis—Brady Quinn…and automatically say..overrated.
But he’s really not. The more I read about him..the more I read that the knocks are wrong on him.
He’s cocky…but so is Phillip Rivers. He’s not that big…but he’s bigger then Drew Brees.
The more you actually read on Clausen..the more the perception goes from Golden Dome, Brady Quinn….to a mix of Rivers and Brees…

I think Clausen is going to be really, really good
I wouldn’t say best QB prospect in 20 years (umm…Peyton Manning much?), but I really am confident that Clausen will be a star in the league.
That said, Suh has to be the pick. Suh is just a sure thing dominant talent. I think, unlike last year, the Rams really can’t go wrong with the top pick. Lucky them. Unlucky Lions.
2009 Did Not Happen
I'm saying that
cuz Clausen actually has the best stats as a junior in 20 years..or at least a junior that plays in an offense more complex then a coloring book (Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy for example).
And no…Manning wasn’t as good as Clausen in his junior year.
N8 !
that might be relevant
if Clausen went back for his senior year and was as good or better than Manning was, but he isn’t doing that – I can’t find it right now, but there was an article recently about how much better senior QB’s do in the NFL than guys who come out as juniors.
Also, just comparing Clausen’s junior year stats to Manning’s junior year stats is a little misleading. Manning was better as both a freshman and a sophomore than Clausen was, and had what could almost be considered a “down” junior year. Despite that, he was still almost definitely gonna be the #1 overall pick if he came out, which he didn’t. What he did was go back and have an unreal senior year, which led to him being the most hyped QB prospect I can ever remember. You could possibly get away with saying Clausen is the best junior QB prospect in 20 years, but to say he’s the best overall is just flat out wrong.
2009 Did Not Happen
aiight...
I mean…I hope Clausen falls flat on his face when he gets drafted…so no good QB ever goes to ND again…
But it was more cuz people keep hyping up Suh…yet, Clausen’s damn good too.
And really..its junior QB IN THE DRAFT, in the past 20 years…who knows what Clausen would’ve done in another year.
N8 !
I'm really just nitpicking
I do think Clausen’s gonna be awesome, and I really do feel bad for the Lions. They get the #1 pick (after an 0-16 season, no less) in a pretty weak draft where there was really no “clear cut” #1 and they had to talk themselves into Stafford. I honestly think there’s at least 5 players in this draft who are better prospects than Stafford, but the Lions won’t get the most “cant miss” of them (unless the Rams take Clausen), and then they won’t take Clausen either. Sucks to be a Lions fan.
And are we agreed that McClain falling to the Giants would be like the best thing ever?
2009 Did Not Happen
yea no doubt on McClain.
it would be the opposite of the GIants luck in 2009 tho…
More realistic, may be Darryl Washington in round 2.

Please no QB in 1st for my Rams!!
We have to take Suh. Period.
What situation will Claussen be working with in StL?? He has below average WR’s, an O-Line that is trying to gel (Here’s hoping that Jason Smith can recover from getting his bell cracked), no TE support, and on and on. We draft Claussen and we’ll have the second coming of Joey Harrington, i.e- a highly touted QB that goes to a bad team and gets mauled every week.
We take Suh and think about how much he changes our team. Chris Long gets freed up and can get more pressure on the QB, our LB’s get more opportunities on blitzes, our offense is dealing with a shorter field rather than having to drive the length.
We may be able to get some a very good QB in the 2nd, good WR in the 3rd, and I would be tickled pink!
a Spags defense centered around Suh
scares me, as a Giants fan who saw him win a Super Bowl w/o anyone as good as Suh.
2009 Did Not Happen
so what happens to the Rams' offense
Other than RB Jackson, who do you guys have? Is the Free Agency market going to get you veterans for the offense at key positions (QB and WR)? Vick may be a possible FA acquisition for QB, but in my mind he’s overrated…
Relive the shocking NOOOOOOOO of April 25 2009 at Witty's Draft Review and laugh laugh laugh...
we'll have to take what we can get
We all know our O is worse off than our D, but we mostly want BPA. As long as our needs are so vast, we want to take what the draft gives us. Of course whom we want isn’t neccessarily whom we’ll get.
Morgan to the Bucs at #3
I am a Raiders fan, not a Bucs fan but I really don’t see Derrick Morgan going as high as #3. Did you see him in the Orange Bowl. He was handled very well by Brian Bulaga. Bulaga is an excellent college lineman but to have been a complete non factor in the biggest game of his college career doesn’t bode well for mister Morgan.
Go Raiders, Go Hawkeyes!!!
Bucs need DT and OT more than DE
If the Bucs luck out like mofos, they’ll love getting Suh. If the Bucs have some luck, they’ll settle for DT McCoy. If neither are there, they ought to get best available OT for these reasons:
1) Trueblood is a penalty magnet, and Penn disgruntled
2) You want to protect your franchise QB (Freeman) with the best possible OT, and you don’t get those from free agency
3) You can’t be entirely sure the value of a Second Round OT will be the same as the guy you get first off the OT chart. This draft is looking to have very good depth of talent for the D-line and the Bucs can gamble getting a solid DT at the top of the Second Round (thank the pagan Gods for the extra 2nd we got from da Bears) to fill the Bucs’ defensive scheme.
4) Overall upgrade to the Offensive line is nothing to sneeze at, and could help with the running game as well.
