TSN: Andrew Luck is the best quarterback prospect in over 10 years
In his latest mock, Russ Lande of the Sporting News says Andrew Luck is the best quarterback prospect he's evaluated in over 10 years. High praise.
Entering the season, I didn't have Luck rated because he's only a redshirt sophomore. However, after watching every minute of the UCLA, Wake Forest and Notre Dame games, Luck will likely be our No. 1 overall quarterback in a revised set of rankings next week.
Still, saying he's the best draft prospect in over 10 years is a ballsy statement. In the past 10-plus years, that would put Luck ahead of the likes of Sam Bradford, Matthew Stafford, Matt Ryan, JaMarcus Russell (you can't deny how hot he was coming out), Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, Alex Smith, Carson Palmer, David Carr (same as Russell) and Tim Couch.
Depending on how far back you go, that would also include Peyton Manning, who was taken first overall in the 1998 NFL Draft.
I really started following the draft hard in 1996 – I thought Tim Biakabutuka was going to be a star (ugh). Since then, I don't think I've held a player in as high of regard as Manning. In fact, if I had to rank the above-mentioned quarterbacks when they came out, here's what it would look like. Now remember, this is strictly as prospects, not how their career ended up. Revisionist history be damned.
1.Peyton Manning
2. Matthew Stafford
3. Carson Palmer
4. Tim Couch
5. Philip Rivers
6. Sam Bradford
7. Ben Roethlisberger
8. Matt Ryan
9. David Carr
10. Eli Manning
11. JaMarcus Russell
12. Alex Smith
Judging on the short time he's had in college, I'd have Luck third in that list. It's hard to knock how highly regarded Peyton Manning and Stafford were coming out of college. They have prototypical size with smarts and a good arm. Those are also strengths of Luck's.
In fact, the only thing keeping Luck back for me is the inexperience and the fact that he hasn't taken a game over. But there's still time for both.
Lande didn't really expound on why he considers Luck the best quarterback prospect in over 10 years. That just stuck out to me reading his mock.
Also interesting from the mock:
- Prince Amukamara over Patrick Peterson
- No Jake Locker, however he has Christian Ponder going fourth overall
- Indiana offensive tackle James Brewer going in the first round
- Troy wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan going in the first round. I like Jernigan a lot, but maybe not in the first 75 picks.

where would Aaron Rodgers fit on that list?

I'm curious to know where he put Rodgers as well.
I liked Rodgers more than Smith in the 05 draft and am still shocked the 49ers didn’t take Rodgers who played in their backyard. I remember a friend telling me PFT had Rodgers sliding to the 24th pick and my response being, “I can’t see that happening, someone will draft him in the top 10. If Rodgers gets picked by Green Bay at 24 I’ll give you a _______” I’ll spare you the extra detail there, but obviously it was very embarrassing.
Rodgers is the classic example of over-analyzing by scouts
They talked themselves out of a great player that everyone else knew was great.
I think Dez Bryant’s fall this year proves that GMs still suffer the same over-analyzation problems.

I would also blame Trent Dilfer, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington and Kyle Boller. There was a lot of concern with Tedford QBs at the time. Three of those guys were top 10 picks and were busts. At the time Boller was nothing more than average.

I’m ashamed to admit that I didn’t like Rodgers coming out.
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
It's not as though you were alone though.
I remember a lot of draftniks saying in most years neither him or Smith would have been top of the first round (or not first round at all) guys.
I Agree
He is not only a good college QB, but a solid potential NFL QB. If I were the Buffalo Bills, I would draft this guy in a heart beat along with his FB O.Marecic for the team. Even better, go after the coach and bring him in as the Offensive Coordinator/QB/Maybe Head Coach ASAP. Opps!, Draft also G.Carimi/N.Solder to play LOT/ROT on the line.
He’s real good, but not THAT good.

Russ Lande is a moron
Hes always got guys going higher or lower than everybody else. He had Jeff Owens and Dekoda Watson both going in the first round last year. They both ended up being 7th round picks…
Hmmm...
I remember thinking Peyton would be good, but not great in the pros… anyway, I love Luck and would have him in my top five among this listed. My #1 coming out of college was Big Ben; I loved the size and his ability to win games single-handedly. Rivers would be my #2, I think; I labeled him the next Farve. Oh, and I always thought Russell was garbage, but I was high on Couch. It’s weird how hot and cold I am evaluating QBs…

Better hot and cold than just wrong most of the time.
QB is a hard position to gauge and if you’re right 50% of the time you’re doing better than a lot of real GMs.
Translation:
The Sporting News needs attention-grabbing headlines to get people to pay attention.
Let’s let the kid play a few games first. He’s tall and has a strong arm. My golly, you just described…. JaMarcus Russell
The rest of the picks are all obvious needs, which as we know is never how it works out. But at least they can analyze the needs.
He’s tall and has a strong arm.
That actually sounds more like Ryan Mallett than Luck
Is it hockey season yet?

To start the HYPE MACHINE insert quarters here.
Come on, how many times do we have to hear that “best [fill in position here] in ten years”, before we all know it means nothing.
Talking
means nothing now. You cannot accurately judge these college players based on the first month. Let them play through December against their conference foes & then tell me how great they are.
I absolutely HATE having to watch so much Tennessee Oiler football.

So should I shut the site down until December then?
If you do we’re gonna fight. ;-)
The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun
You know I watch Luck
And i like him. He’s a good QB prospect, but I don’t think he’s great. I just don’t see this greatness everyone is going on about. I’m probably missing something.;) Of course I also think Pryor is going to be a great pro QB, so it is what it is.

Question Mocking Dan
On the BR Blog you mentioned Malletts footwork as screwey.
Yet despite when he is flat footed, or throwing off his back foot, he still throws lasers.
I think his biggest problem is the inability to throw a touch pass less than 10 yards because he has such a cannon of an arm, it’s the throw he can’t make.
What say you?
There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.
Note
I meant to put this last post on your Saturday game post with your BR interview my bad.
Another question, doesn’t the idea of a redshirt sophomore like Luck and who hasn’t carried an offense like Bradford’s sophomore season scare you?
I like Luck, but think he needs some more college development before you could really consider him a #1 overall pick.

Luck isn’t in the same offense as Bradford.

I have said I’d like to see Luck just dominate a game, so that is a slight concern. I thought that was happening in the first half against Oregon, but then he had a bad second half.
I will say, though, that Bradford’s offense gave him a much easier chance to succeed than Luck’s. Obviously it’s a totally different scheme where Bradford didn’t have to make as many progressions. But he also had a ton more talent around him. That’s the big pillow for Jake Locker to fall on, so it should be applicable for Luck as well.

Especially after tonight’s 2nd half, he needs to learn how to fight through adversity like Locker has been doing since he was a freshman.

I like this topic
I’d have put Carson Palmer #1 followed by Bradford, Russell, Smith, and Leinart. Rivers and Eli would be there next, and I’ve always hated Stafford (but I didn’t know he’d be such a gunslinger), followed by Matt Ryan (I mean he looked bush league in college) and Sanchez would be way to the bottom of the list. Just my sort of truncated list (started prospect watching about 7 years ago), love the website guys.
Julio Jones for Rams 2011....NOT Devier Posey!!!
Ryan
How did Matt Ryan look bush league at BC? Aside from Gosder Cherilus, he literally had nobody on offense that even got a sniff from the NFL. Despite that, he had over 30 passing TDs and had BC in the top 10 most of his senior year.
I love this topic, too
My “can never fail” QBs- Use Everything you have to get them
Peyton Manning, Carson Palmer, Matt Staford
My “Take them if they are available” picks
Matt Ryan, Phillip Rivers, Eli Manning, Tim Couch, Alex Smith, Matt Leinart,
My “Be very careful draft picks”
Bradford, Russell, Rothlisberger, Sanchez,
Today I put:
Luck in category 1
Mallett in Category 3

I didn't list the developement guys.
I like Josh Freeman, Joe Flacco, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees ect. But to me they were not sure-fire use a first round pick players. They weren’t in my opinion, at the time, Boom or Bust guys. I just thought they would take time to make it, if ever, and I wouldn’t waste a first round draft choice. Clausen was a good example last year. I think he went at the right spot although I wouldn’t have really thought it horrible if a team like the Vikings used the 30th pick in the first to pick him up.
