How Bill Walsh evaluated each position
It's always fun to get inside the head of an NFL talent evaluator. In this case, it's San Francisco 49ers legend Bill Walsh. Someone sent me a link earlier today on how he evaluates each position.
The content is a little antiquated considering it came out in 1997, but much of it remains relevant today. On quarterbacks:
If throwing a ball were the only aspect of playing quarterback, then this would be an easy position to evaluate. However, because of the dynamic role he plays on the team, a quarterback must have physical, mental, emotional and instinctive traits that go well beyond the mere ability to pass a football.
On inside linebackers:
The inside linebacker has to be substantial enough to meet blockers coming from any number of angles and not be knocked around the field easily. Instinct is mandatory at this position. He must be able to watch the ball and read the blocking. It's difficult to describe how to look for instinct, but the guys who find a way to get to the football and make the tackle, they probably have it.
This is from the Sports Xchange, which led to NFL Draft Scout, which led to the CBS Sports NFL Draft coverage. So make sure to check it out. If anyone ever comes across information like this, feel free to send it my way or put it up on the site in a Fan Post.

wow good call
Interestingly, I believe Tony Gonzalez of Cal this year has the potential to become that type of all around great tight end.
Who is this Tony you speak of?
J/k Glad to have that guy a Chief for so long.
Cassel out, Andrew Luck in!

I could be wrong...
But I heard that Marv Levy drafted Trent Edwards on Walsh’s recommendation. Love Bill Walsh and was easily one of the greatest coaches of all time. Not to mention one of the greatest evaluators of all time as well. But man what a whiff! Then again, the Trent he saw was the pre-concussion Trent that all of us Bills fans were so high on when we were off to that torrid start a few years ago. In any event, good post, was an awesome read!
