Cam Newton not talking about NFL Draft

Photo

Talking to reporters on Monday, sensational Auburn quarterback Cam Newton said he "couldn't give a definite decision on how I'm feeling right now" about entering the 2011 NFL Draft until after this season.

Newton, the Heisman Trophy front runner, has led Auburn to a 9-0 record and poised to make the SEC Championship game. Win that, and it could be the National Title game for Newton.

There has been speculation, namely from Tony Pauline of TFY Draft, that Newton will enter the pros following this season. Odds are, he will never be a hotter player if he maintains his current pace.

Star-divide

On the year, he has 1,573 yards passing, with a 66.7 completion percentage with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. What's more impressive is his 1,122 yards rushing with 14 scores on the ground (and one receiving).

As a pure quarterback, though, Newton is mostly unproven. He plays in a run-option spread and seems to want to pull the ball down too fast. His physical skills – arm strength, athleticism – are unquestionable. But as a passer, Newton still has room to grow. If he enters the NFL Draft in 2011, a team might be more wiling to take a chance on a more proven commodity like Jake Locker or Ryan Mallett.

Should Newton stay, he'll continue to develop and Mallett will most likely be gone already. In 2012, Newton would be in the draft with the likes of Matt Barkley of USC and maybe Andrew Luck of Stanford if he doesn't enter this year.

It will be interesting

He is such an amazing prospect though. Did anyone see his TD catch?!?!?! Guy is a freak and has a ridiculous arm to go with it. He’s like a faster Tebow!

But you allude to the point of more refined QB’s likely going into this draft. If Luck and Foles dont go, and he’s the third best QB going into the draft, I’d like to see him try his luck in this draft, especially since it’ll probably be the last of huge rookie deals.

He’s one of those guys where the sky is the limit, and his college and NFL future are in his hands. Can a football player ask for anything else?

I thought last year wa sthe last

of the huge rookie deals. I suppose if the CBA isn’t signed yet this year will be huge and many will come out early. That would make this year huger than last year.

Newton seems to have the right attitude of a franchise QB

he seems to be a lot like Josh Freeman, probably a lot more athletic tho. I bet that in the underwear olympics he puts on a show, even throwing the pill, and gets drafted in the top 5 at worst.

And that good attitude thing usually impresses coaches more then throwing the ball 80 yards downfield, unless you’re Al Davis.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

If he waits until 2012 he can be sure that the Raiders will pick him.
