Around SBN: Will Rhymes 'Fine' After Being Hit By Pitch And Fainting

Lets Talk Nati.

This is just a few explanations of whats going on in orange and black and in the enigma we call the Bengals front office. So much going on during this season and this off season. Coaching change may occur and depending on the Bengals can get under contract, owner Mike Brown may be loosening his death grip on football operations. But in this post I just wanna talk about the roster and depth chart concerning the the draft.

Star-divide

Concerning the needs of the Bengals. I'm going to categorize into into being a Level 1 or Level 2 need. (level 1 being higher need).

Level 1 Needs

  • Wide Receiver - Jerome Simpson labeled as a bust. Andre Caldwell disappears at times(now buried on depth chart) Chad has been on the decline since the name change. Terrell Owens will be gone. And Jordan Shipley last yr's 3rd round pick is only a slot wr. They need new number 1 wr who can go deep or short. They also need a new deep burner to make their passing game a reak threat again.
  • Franchise Quarterback - QB is a need but may get moved back because of other needs. But with the changing of the coaching staff looking imminent, the chance goes up that the coach may want their own "face of the franchise" to mark the start of their era.
  • Defensive Line - Do not be shocked at all if they go Defensive Line. They need a strong #1 DT to go along with Peko. But there are also so many quality D ends to go with Micheal Johnson and Carlos Dunlap. The defensive trenches are definitely an area that can be upgraded So with a top pick it could be a great possibility to see a DL go to the Bengals.

Level 2 Needs

  • Offensive Line - This is a position that will be addressed but it will definitely be on the back burner behind the other problems. There's no interior lineman worth a top 3 pick so expect a pick coming after the first. The bengals have two young pups; Reggie Stephens and Otis Hudson. Reggie actually made the 53 man this season and filled in greatly during the pre-season for Kyle Cook at Center. One of those 3 interrior spots will go to Stephens or Hudson next season.
  • Safety - The bengals are in desperate need for a true coverage safety to play free. Chris Crocker is really more of a SS playing free, and Ndukwe and Williams are miniature linebackers. Reggie Nelson may be able to capitalize with Crocker being on IR giving him a shot to be a starter again in the NFL.

Now for my mock.

1. Andrew Luck QB Stanford*

It's definitely either a QB or DL. I feel unless we slide back closer to pick 6 we would pass on AJ Green. So it's now a decision between Franchise QB or one of the many strong candidates on the defensive line. Until combine, it's at a time, it's too hard for me to tell who really is the #1 DL in the draft. They're all solid, and just about all of them are receiving great comparisons. But the big need is a new QB as well as with the possibility of a new coaching staff they may want to say this is MY QB. *If he doesn't declare go DL.

2. Jon Baldwin WR Pitt.

This kid has it, he may not drop out of the first, but there's a strong chance he might. He can become the new #1 receiver Cincinnati needs. He's got great height, vertical leap, and phenomenal strength for the position.

3. Marvin Austin DT NC

Sure he's been one of the many many NC players suspended this year, but doesn't mean he's not talented. He's got a big frame and knows how to play his strengths. Many list him as a possible 2nd rounder, but regardless he will drop from that but a strong combine performance may give him a chance to be a 3rd round pick.

4. John Moffitt OG Wisconsin

Personally I'm a strong believer in the Wisonsin offensive line and think they're one of the premeir lines in college football. They're big strong bruisers who have great run blocking and I think that fits what they need to have in the AFCN.

5. Tejay Johnson FS TCU

Nice ball hawk, showed up big in last years bowl game against Boise St. with 8 tackles, makes plays when given the chance. May be a work in progress free but has a big upside at the next level when using a 5th round pick on him.

6. Terrance Toliver WR LSU

Pretty big upside for a 6th round pick, may not break into the earlier rounds and wow the scouts. But as a late round pick there's a lot of potential in him to get a roster spot and to mature into one of the better steals in this draft.

If it's deemed spam, it gets deleted.

I can see drafting Moffitt in the 4th NOW

But I think he’s going to rise from now until April, he’s played very very well this year along side Carimi and could make a case for the late 2nd early 3rd depending on when the run on O-lineman begins (assuming early 2nd) Moffitt could be a very good guard in the NFL, and would be, in my opinion, a steal in the 4th.

The stars would have to be in perfect alignment

for those first four picks to be there for you guys. I am pretty sure that by April Tolliver will have moved back up into the mid round range, he has had two pretty good games & has the size, speed & hands that NFL teams covet

None of those guys will be available in those spots.

your GM will be a strategic mastermind to pull this off

Andrew Luck will be taken by the Panthers or the Bills, which means you’d have to trade up. Trading up even a few spots in the first round can cost your entire draft. Ex. Going from #6 to #1 overall would cost your entire draft this year and at least a 2nd rounder next year.

I can see Jonathan Baldwin dropping to the second, but Marvin Austin in the 3rd is being incredibly incredibly hopeful

>your GM

i hate you

But seriously, there’s a minute chance that the new coach sticks with Jimmy Clausen for no other reason than the fact that he’s only been in the league for a year. Even better, the Panthers might actually fluke two more wins and get the second pick. Given our schedule, if we beat anyone, it’ll be a miracle, and we’ve already got the second pick at the moment, so we have some shots at Luck but you’re right, it’s more likely that we won’t get him.

by Doc Scratch on Nov 25, 2010 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

even if i had great faith in Clausen, I'd take Luck anyways

play Clausen for a year: if he sucks, go to Luck, if he doesnt, trade one of them

basically put ourselves hopefully into the same situation that SD was in in 2004 with Philip Rivers and Drew Brees

if the Panthers were to get any other player, we better trade down because 1st overall CB is such a difficult pick to comprehend for me… the CB would have to be Deion Sanders every year for the next 15 years to justify that

A.J. Green?

You guys do need another guy to complement Steve Smith. A.J. Green wouldn’t be a terrible pick if that were the case.

Yupp

We might not get most of them. But that’s because I posted a mock draft on THANKSGIVING and the draft is months away.

Being a top 3 pick in the draft they will be able to get the leftovers of each round.
Jon Baldwin is predicted to fall out of the first. Only 32 players can be a first round pick so that means out of the 40 some supposed first round picks someone has to go 2.

Marvin Austin would have to have a kick*** combine to keep him in the 2nd he’s talented but not to the level of Robert Quinn where he can still keep all his stock. Some guys have him dropping to the 4th even. I just said pick 66 sounds about right.

Moffit, he could improve up to a 3rd most definitely, and 2nd would be a lot steeper to accomplish. Mid round offensive lineman can be hard to judge sometimes, (this early) because just a little footwork can change move you up a round.

As I see it, the Bengals should have two draft boards come draft day: Luckless and Lucky.

The Lucky board would look something like the one CByers already has, except maybe a DE instead of Marvin Austin, while the Luckless board would have DE, WR, OLB, OL, FS, and maybe DT. I don’t see them cutting ties with any of their tackles yet, Tank just signed a huge extension, Peko is by far their best tackle, Sims gets a number of snaps, and Atkins routinely performs.

It's not that i don't like the DT's

it’s that the only true starter we have there is peko. Tank has fallen out of favor with me personally. Geno is great rotation DT but idk yet if he’s a starter. Sims is good but i feel if anyone doesnt make the 53 man next season in DT’s it could be sims or tank.

I think both DT and DE could be strengthened but I feel comparing the DE is like a 2.3/5 and the DT’s are 2.1/5 I mean they’re both bad and could use some upgrades.

But you are right really there’s 2 draftboards for the bengals either the Luck or Luckless board.
