Friday NFL Draft watch notes

Photo

This may be a little late, but the three best games of the day are covered.

Today is the best chance for Auburn quarterback Cam Newton to make a case a legit NFL prospect. Many are already projecting him to be a first-round pick due to his developmental upside. A bad game against Auburn today may be enough to force Newton to return to Auburn for another year – unless the NCAA says otherwise.

One Auburn player ready for the pros is defensive lineman Nick Fairley. Some will wonder if Fairley is a one-year wonder. If a team is going to use a top 10 pick on Fairley, it's a justifiable concern. But he's had flashes this year where his game could be categorized between Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy.

Star-divide

One player not living up to the hype is Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower. He may be second on Alabama with 63 tackles, but it's been an up-and-down year for Hightower as a prospect. He hasn't shown a lot of intensity as a player and you have to question his effort some. It might be smart for Hightower to return for another season and cement himself as a first-round pick.

If you haven't seen a Colorado game this season, today is your chance to see arguably the best cornerback duo in the nation. Jimmy Smith may not have any interceptions on the year, but his play shouldn't be discounted. Smith may line up against physical Nebraska receiver Niles Paul in a great matchup. Smith's corner partner is Jalil Brown. He's not quite as physically gifted as Smith, but he's a heady player with good timing. (update: Apparently Paul is not playing.)

It's pretty amazing what Oregon has done with its talent. It's likely no upperclassmen from the Ducks will be picked in the first three rounds of the draft next year. If redshirt sophomore LaMichael James enters the draft, he projects  to grade out in the same late first- early second-round area like Jahvid Best.

In the next ranking update, expect to see Oklahoma running back DeMarco Murray ahead of Nebraska's Roy Helu Jr. Helu has cooled off since running for 307 yards against Missouri on Oct. 30. More so, he hasn't come along as a pass catcher this season like Murray. Neither is a feature back at the next level, so the extra things Murray can do puts him ahead of Helu.

If Nevada upsets Boise State today, Wolfpack pass rusher Dontay Moch will be a big reason why. Moch is again near the top of the NCAA in tackles for loss with 19.5. He was handled pretty easily by Boise last season and is looking for a big game to wind down his college career. Moch will be attractive to a lot of 3-4 teams in need of a linebacker.

I feel like Fairley

Is going to be this years Dan Williams.

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

I don't think it's fair to call something like that on a guy just because

“He’s got the spotlight on him” for his attitude. But that’s what the refs are going to do, and Fairley should realize that

Thoughts on the Patriots picking up Helu in the 4th...

…and if you think he complements a stable of BenJarvus Green-Ellis (bruiser) and Danny Woodhead (shifty)?

He’s not necessarily a bruiser. He’s a classic forward-lean RB. Kind of reminds me of a lesser Frank Gore without the receiving chops.

by Dan Kadar on Nov 26, 2010 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

He's a little bit of everything.

He can bruise a little bit and has gotten bigger over the last 2 years. But he’s also pretty shifty. He always manages to turn a loss into a gain. I think he’ll be a pretty good second back in a run-by-committee backfield.

Can you breakdown how Blackmon had 158 yds on Prince earlier this year??

I didn’t get to watch the game, but I noticed that.

Wondering if it was a couple big plays, or if he just out played him? Also I guess I should ask, instead of assume, but was Prince covering him most of that game??

"Everybody's hurt in this league, so when guys go out, other guys have to step in. What are we going to do, cry wolf? Nobody cares about the pain, they just want to see the baby." - Cowboys LB Bradie James

by -Primetime21- on Nov 26, 2010 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

Yes Prince was covering him.

And yes it was a few big plays for much of the yardage. Weeden underthrew Blackmon quite a few times and Blackmon was able to drop back and get the catch. I’m wondering if that was the gameplan because they did it more than once and it resulted in the big plays. Prince did look bad on one or two but Blackmon is realy realy good.

by Omaha Sun on Nov 26, 2010 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

I agree, Blackmon is a great receiver for only being a RS Soph

And I watched the highlights on YT, saw the flea flicker really killed them. But it should raise some concerns on Prince don’t you think?? I mean, Blackmon is good, but there are a lot of great receivers in the NFL that he would have to cover.

Now don’t get me wrong, I think Prince could be a good corner, but is he “the next shutdown” corner in the NFL like everyone is labeling him?? Just curious, I try not to watch a lot of Nebraska games, being an Iowa fan I love to see them lose, but I hate watching them, unless they are losing, which hasn’t happened much this year.

That was really the only bad game he's had.

We may get to see them match-up again if Okie State can take care of business against the Sooners. I would be shocked to see Prince play that poorly and fall for those tricks again.

He has great size and is very smart. He rarely gets thrown at and usually when he does he is able to step in and knock the pass down. He’s also a very good tackler. He really is as good as everyone thinks.

Don’t like him as a QB. Rail thin. Comes from a gimmick offense. Odd throwing motion. He’ll be in the NFL, but I don’t think as a quarterback.

Word is he’ll get a Senior Bowl invite soon.

How much do you think this game is helping Jones' draft stock?

Honestly, I don’t think it matters all that much. It won’t catapult him over AJ Green, so it’s really just further solidifying him as the second receiver taken in the draft (a spot which I think he had locked up anyways.)

I was just going to ask that too, I was thinking anywhere from 4-6

Hopefully Dallas gives him a chance to come in, considering his Dad works for the ‘Boys. Who knows, he’s a very smart kid, and the type of leader you would want. He’d certainly be a project who would need to sit for 3-4 years, but he’s making a strong case for himself

Yeah, I don't read too much into that, Ken Dorsey had a lot of wins in college too...so did Jason White

The one thing that concerns me most about him is that he stares down his receivers, that’s definitely something he would need to work on in the pros. He can get away with it because not many college corners can cover Jones, but in the NFL that will change
