NFL Draft Week 13 random observations

If Wisconsin defensive lineman J.J. Watt is considering going pro, he should. On Saturday, he had the best of his career with two forced fumbles and a blocked extra point. The pressure he caused wreaked havoc on Northwestern all game. Even against multiple blockers he was getting penetration. Lazy draftniks will compare Watt to Adam Carriker, but don't let that fool you. Watt, a former Central Michigan tight end, plays with more tenacity and is more athletic.

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton showed he has what it takes to be an NFL quarterback. In Auburn's come-from-behind win against Alabama, Newton completed 13 of 20 passes with three touchdowns. His numbers weren't gaudy, but several of them were NFL-style throws. Newton has a really good touch on his passes and gets good placement.

Star-divide

Ryan Mallett had an up-and-down game Arkansas' thrilling win over LSU. Mallett has the arm strength and he's been a more mature player this season. But there are some flaws in his footwork. When he has time, Mallett can throw it anywhere. but against pressure, his passes wobble. This is the only thing keeping Mallett behind Jake Locker as the second-best quarterback prospect this season.

One player who starred for Arkansas was offensive tackle DeMarcus Love. He's a powerful tackle with some athleticism. His hand punch is scary. He reminds me of Vernon Carey of the Dolphins.

Before Saturday, Maryland's Torrey Smith maybe the best wide receiver no one talks about. After catching 14 passes for 224 yards and four touchdowns, plenty know about him now. Smith's best asset is his speed. For a powerfully built player, Smith's speed is dangerous. His hands have been inconsistent, but he now has four games this season of 149 yards or more receiving. Don't be surprised if the junior enters the draft.

One junior to keep an eye on entering the draft is Louisiana-Lafayette junior tight end Ladarius Green. He's big at 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds with solid quickness and speed. In 10 games this season, he has 38 receptions for 674 yards and six touchdowns. He's had more than 100 yards receiving in the last three games. He could enter after head coach Rickey Bustle was fired.

If Stanford's Andrew Luck enters the draft, he went out in his last home game in spectacular fashion. The redshirt sophomore completed 21 of 30 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns. Carolina's Jimmy Clausen had a good game against Cleveland but will need to win some games to get the Panthers out of the No. 1 pick.

Food for thought: If Auburn's Nick Fairley enters the draft, how will the perception that he's a dirty player affect his draft stock?

Clausen showed that he can lead the Panthers to wins.

He showed poise if front of the pressure, made some great throws and decisions, had that terrible INT but then drove us downfield to attempt the FG to win it.
If he continues this even if we pick #1 overall we won’t pick Luck.

i think he'll have to play himself out of danger

if he fails, then we have #1 overall and might take Luck

if he succeeds, it means we won games and wont have the chance to draft him

Fairley drop?

A penetrating tackle with a nasty streak and a rep for being dirty dropping in the draft? Puh-lease; NFL DC’s salivate over guys like that. His rep probably helps him more than hurts him.

Drooling at the thought of it, though Mike Brown won't perceive it as a position of need.

Peko, Tank, SIms, and Atkins. Tank’s not worth his contract, but the other three are and I doubt they part ways with Tank after signing him to a four-year deal over the offseason.

Now if he were a DE, we could actually talk about it….

There are teams with that kind of reputation who would definitely draft him high. The Titans come to mind.

Let the beasting begin.

I thought Fairley was a Senior

In the copycat league that is the NFL, we may see teams looking for the next Michael Vick in the 2011 NFL Draft. While there isn’t another Vick, Chris Steuber at CBS Sports counts off seven of the draft eligible prospects that may fill that role. Top of the list is Auburn QB, Cameron Newton.

One of the guys at CincyJungle suggested the thought of a team having an offense that featured three running QBs

Y’know akin to Vick. It’s odd to have a back-up or even a starter like that and not have anyone with a similar skill set on the depth chart because it throws the offense off. You can’t have a mobile QB take center when a starter with a more traditional skill set gets injured and expect a ton of success, though the reverse is even harder to work.

If I were the Eagles, I’d drop Kolb and try to pick up Seneca Wallace from the Browns as well as sign Vick to an extension and take one of those players with a similar skillset to Vick in the draft. The offense wouldn’t lose all of its QB draws if Seneca has to take snaps for Vick in case he gets injured.

Seneca Wallace sucks

As a Seahwks fan, watching him in 2009 in place of Matt was brutal. The guy will run out of bounds BEHIND the LOS without even throwing the football away (thus sacking himself). Trust me, if anyone is going to build a offense based on what you described, Seneca wouldn’t even be considered.

Derrek Sherrod

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

Like this guy. He would be a good fit with the Jets.
