Injury impact: Case Keenum's NFL career in limbo

Over the next several weeks, we'll look at how injuries have impacted NFL Draft prospects. Entering the season, some compared Houston's Case Keenum to Drew Brees. Others say he is a system quarterback only.

Right now, Keenum's NFL future is floating somewhere in limbo. The star quarterback tore his ACL on Sept. 18 and applied for a sixth year of eligibility in October. Keenum is set to graduate in December.

Because the NCAA has no timetable on making a decision, Keenum is stuck in a waiting pattern. Go pro now and it's unlikely he'll get drafted before the fifth round. Stay in college and who knows.

Star-divide

What is known is that Keenum can pile up stats. He needs 3,487 passing yards to break Timmy Chang's NCAA record of 17,072. He's 28 touchdown passes behind Graham Harrell's record of 134.

As a pro prospect, he's better than Chang and Harrell. Keenum's best asset is his timing. He shows good anticipation of where his receivers will be and when. His accuracy is very good and he's poised in the pocket. The big negatives on Keenum are his height (6'1) and his less-than-stellar arm strength. Still, it's not implausible that Keenum is better than someone like Christian Ponder.

I loved Case

but then i watched the bowl game where he kept finding the other team. I think that he will be allowed to stay for another year. I can’t see him being drafted if he went in, it was questionable before the injury, but now with the injury he wouldn’t be drafted. He is a pretty good talent but he never really faced great teams.

What Would Joey Votto Do?

He needs to stay

like Shipley, he doesnt deserve to be kicked out so quickly. Case is an institution down there and to rob that school of him would be a huge blow

Personally not high on him as a pro prospect. He excels in the intermediate to short game, but doesnt do much downfield. Also his judgements can be suspect, as OGC Reds alluded to in that bowl game.

That with playing in whatever conference Houston is in, doesnt make him a desireable prospect. I could see a team throwing a late round pick next year on him and I dont see anything beyond a back up role for him in the pros

I would take Harrell over Keenum any day of the week

Harrell was far more accurate than Case Keenum and GH could throw the deep ball better than Keenum. I’ve watched a lot of UH games and a vast majority of Keenum’s passing yards come on screen passes. He is the very definition of a system quarterback.

I did feel terrible that his college career ended the way it did- he was a great college QB, but when it comes to the NFL, healthy or not he won’t have a career in the NFL.

He'll be a good Pro

We all know how hard it is to predict success in the NFL. Case is as tall as Kurt Warner, Drew Breese and Colt McCoy. He is the type of quarterback that makes things happen and will bring his team back from defeat to victory. Very clutch, accurate, excellent escapability.

If you follow a Pro team, you have got to hope they snag Case.
