Week 10 NFL Draft random observations
Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder had a game against North Carolina that was more up than down. it was a solid bounce back after some average games recently. Ponder does a nice job of placing the ball over the top, especially near the sideline. Still, he passes tend to flutter and his arm strength isn't totally there. He seems like a solid second-round prospect who can develop.
LSU defensive tackle Drake Nevis put together another impressive game on Saturday. Officially he only had one sack against Alabama, but he was routinely splitting double teams and collapsing the pocket. On the year he has six sacks, with 12.5 tackles for a loss. Impressive for a somewhat undersized defensive tackle. The man he was going after, Greg McElroy, was impressive. I still think he projects as a solid backup in the NFL.
Scary thought? Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck is getting better. Against Arizona Saturday night, Luck had a presence. Making calls at the line and putting a great touch on the ball, Luck's 23 for 32 for 293 yards was impressive. Over the last four games, he's completing 74.5 percent of his passes.
How good is California's Cameron Jordan? He is quickly rising in my mind, and likely in the minds of NFL personnel men. On Saturday, he led the Golden Bears to a victory over Washington State with 12 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack and a half and a forced fumble.
We mentioned Oregon State defensive tackle Stephen Paea in our Saturday watch notes, and he lived up to the hype. He had two sacks against UCLA and was disruptive throughout the day. Paea might be a top 20 pick.
Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon is a joy to watch. He picked apart a suspect Baylor defense. But what was most impressive was Blackmon's ability to get open. He has makes little head moves while running a route that help him gain separation. The redshirt sophomore is ready for the NFL.
It's hard to imagine massive Baylor defensive tackle Phil Taylor being picked in the first three rounds of the draft. He's a big body in the middle at 6-foot-4, 355 pounds. But he was routinely managed by single blockers. A guy his size should be more disruptive. He doesn't have Terrence Cody's quick feet.
Alabama's Mark Ingram is having sort of a down year. His vision is still sound, as he showed on a nifty spin move against LSU Saturday. But he's not breaking as many tackles as last season. Yes, he had 97 yards rushing, but he was never dominant. You have to wonder if he's still not 100 percent following surgery and if he might be better served coming back for his senior season.
Arkansas tight end DJ Williams has really rounded out his game this season. He had five receptions for 67 yards against South Carolina. But it was his blocking that was most impressive. He's still a work in progress there, but is much improved over last season.
How about that Michigan/Illinois game? What a joke.

agreed on Andrew Luck
I was thinking it while watching the game, and the announcers said it too…he has a Peyton Manning like control of his offense.
Obviously no one knows if he’ll be that good and chances are he’s not, but he did everything, from roll outs, to the play action, to the deep throw…really well.

I agree
He showed every element of a pro style offense to be part of his game last night. Even though he probably won’t come out, if he did I’d see him going number 1 overall without a doubt.
If hip hop is dead, then it happened the day that Dilla died.

Here is a prediction
Luck will stay in school through his Senior year. Peyton Manning will retire in 2 seasons, just as Manning retires. Luck will then become the next great passing QB, succeeding Mannning as Manning succeeded Marino
I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

I doubt the Colts will draft first.

Well succeed Manning as the best current passing QB.
Not as the Colt’s QB.

Any chance Luck doesn't go 1st overall?
He really should come out this year. With the CBA coming up and a rookie pay scale happening sooner than later he would be smart to come out now and get the money while it’s still ridiculous for the top 10 picks rather than wait a year and risk injury/poor play/reduced NFL rookie salary.

Agreed. Its going to be a really good WR class. Jones, Green, Blackmon, Jeffery… These guys all seem like first round talents to me.
Floyd if he goes pro.

Jonathan Baldwin too. And Greg Little ain’t bad. Neither is Niles Paul or Jerrel Jernigan. Good receiver year.
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
Ya. It’s hard to remember them all.

He can't
Alshon’s a true soph
You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.

A slight adjustment on Foles
It’s not that he rarely threw the ball more than 15 yards down the field, it’s that he rarely threw the ball more than 5 yards down the field. Having seen Luck play, I taped the game to see Foles for the first time. I was bored to death. He looks like he has a good arm, but all he did was throw 2-3 yard outs to his WRs in front of the CBs. Most option or high school teams run a better pass offense.
Really like Nevis
He just plain took over parts of that game late.

Fairley and Nevis are 2 excellent DTs
hope that some 3-4 team doesn’t grab them and waste their skills too.
