Gabe Carimi perhaps the most pro-ready player in the 2011 NFL Draft
This may seem ridiculous because he's a left tackle projected to switch positions, but Wisconsin's Gabe Carimi might be the most NFL-ready player in college football.
Carimi's power blocking is perhaps second to none this season. He's an excellent run blocker who really drives defenders backward. But it's his pass blocking that has shined this season. Carimi only gave up one sack on the year and showed that he can work to the outside better than previous seasons.
His improved pass blocking helped Carimi win the Outland Trophy this season, awarded to the nation's top interior lineman. The past four winners of the trophy were Ndamukong Suh, Andre Smith, Glenn Dorsey and Joe Thomas. Each were top 10 draft picks.
He's more pro-ready than fellow senior offensive linemen Derek Sherrod, Anthony Castonzo and Rodney Hudson because Carimi has a more-natural power base. Sherrod, Castonzo and Hudson project higher because of their upside. The same can be said for Stephen Paea and Drake Nevis on defense.
Quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers face a big adjustment to the NFL and are no sure thing as rookies. There are no linebackers or safeties this season as ready as Carimi. Prince Amukamara or Patrick Peterson could make a case as cornerbacks, but the 2005 draft should give anyone caution there.
The only other players that come close to Carimi's readiness as a pro are defensive ends Cameron Heyward and Adrian Clayborn. But it's never a given that big college ends can become impact pass rushers immediately.
It's not sexy to like Carimi. However, there's nothing wrong with at the least picking up the next Phil Loadholt or maybe even the next Michael Oher.

perhaps
but my opinion of carimi is still meh lol
I should FanShot this on Acme Packing Company.
Everyone LOVES him over there. And the more I hear about him, the more I think he would be the perfect pick if he falls to the Packers (or the Packers fall to him depending on when A-Rod gets back on the field).

No way packers would take another first round LT two drafts in a row

Carimi = RT, no?

Most likely but possible LT more in a Run oriented team though I think.
My point was I think it is unlikely you go first round OL. You got to see what happens with the rookie OL man first.

There is also alot to be worried about Carimi. He plays high and without a great deal of leverage and his pass blocking is really suspect. There is no guarantee he’ll successfully switch to RT. While he may be the the first OT off the board, I doubt it’ll be in the Top 10.
I guess my point was he’s a scheme fit not an all-around plug like Suh or Thomas were. Carimi looks like a great fit for the Packers or Giants but wouldn’t work for a team like the Colts or Patriots
I agree that he’s kind of a scheme fit, but a damn good one at that.

Why does he fit a ZBS for the Packers
and not the Colts?

The Colts value verstility in their linemen. For tackles, this means being able to play RT and LT. Carimi doesn’t have the balance, leverage, and footwork necessary to play LT in the NFL. Further, he is more of a road-grader type who excells at flattening guys and moving downfield in the running game, a la the way Dallas plays, and doesn’t have pass blocking as a forte. The Colts value guys who excel at pass protection but can also run block.

There is a BIG difference between those 2 players
I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?
RB's transition to the NFL rather easily
Pass protection is really the only area where rookie backs have trouble. Of which you can just put a vet back there to do the job
I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?
Highly disagree. Poor feet, poor coordination and poor balance. I’ve seen him against Michigan State and he was on the ground way too much for my taste.
It's beginning to look a lot like Vickmas!
I’ll give you that that was probably his worst game of the season. But hoow many sacks did Carimi give up that game?
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
Prince Amukamara had 1 bad game too.
Should he not be taken in the top 10?

pretty sure that means "you don't kill a player based on one bad game".
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
He shouldn't go top 10.
He isn’t a lockdown corner.
He didn’t look good against Oklahoma, either.
And I don’t believe he was on Broyles the whole game, too.

I rarely saw him against Broyles
And I rarely saw him make plays in that game.
"Rarely saw him make plays."
Do you mean that the ball didn’t get thrown to his receiver (meaning he was on his receiver like glue) or he failed to stay on his guy (meaning he did a poor job).

Cuz a corner not making plays can be a good thing...
Like I might see Revis not make any plays in a game cuz they don’t throw it to his receiver at all.

The guys he was covering caught a few balls
Not that there is necessarily anything wrong with that either depending on the coverage scheme, but if you are going to be a top 10 pick then I do not expect a soft zone or soft coverage.
He’s been highly touted on a few sites, most notably Easterbrook’s TMQ column on ESPN. If he’s really all that good, then it’s unlikely he’ll last until the Browns pick in the first round, but if he slides I think he would be perfect for us. Yes, we have many more massive needs than a RT, and I don’t see any way we actually take him unless he somehow slides to the second round. But I must admit thinking of having Carimi and Joe Thomas as bookend tackles would make for an outstanding O-line for a long time.

He’ll last that long. I expect him to go no earlier that the mid-20s.

yea for sure. Especially if GM's don't see him as a LT in the NFL. If thats the case he probably is early 2nd round.
A team late in the first could go get him maybe though.

Awesome fit for the Browns.
St. Clair is horrendous at RT.

Then you want him 2nd round. People don't draft for RT in the 1st round.

Jeff otah and gosder cherilus were.
I don’t think we can say a position is out of the 1st round. Guards and centers are taken in the 1st round so why not a RT? Four or five years ago I would’ve agreed with you but not today.
I'm just a dude who likes talking to other dudes about other dudes.........in a straight way.

Hey man been a while nice to see you.
Right but just there you showed us its not common. Teams don’t normally draft for RT in the first. That isn’t to say they don’t end up playing RT cause then end up being better there but the goal is usually a LT. Why not as far as Guards and C’s? We both know both G spots are interchangeable and same jobs. C is also a position though more to it than G is quite interchangeable so you will often see G drafted to play C and vice versa. T usually play RT cause they are not able to play LT because of reasons depending partly on team scheme. I have always viewed RT as a position that is usually a position T move to if they can’t play LT as there Primary position.
Maybe im wrong if so please tell me your thoughts (either way tell me even)??

Cardinals took Levi Brown in the first
He played right turnstile until this season when he finally moved to left turnstile.

Otah, and Cherilus, but also San Fran picked the kids out of Rutgers last yr....
….and you cant tell me the Bengals really thought Smith could play LT, that had to know it was either guard or RT?
They couldn't have.
Andrew Whitworth was the starter there at LT.
Joe Reedy: "Supposedly Marvin could not find his flag to challenge the call. I am not kidding. #bengals"
I know.
I want Blackmon or Julio Jones in the 1st round.
Or Quinn if he’s still there.

I think he'd make a good fit for the Giants
but I doubt he either makes it to then or fits their mold of a first round talent. I hope that’s wrong tho since I doubt he’d not be an option at LT for them, they have no problem with less then eltie athletes at LT.
Is Carimi less of an athlete then Dave Diehl, Shawn Andrew, or Kareem McKenzie (they signed him to play LT at least..).
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
Diehl is a perfectly acceptable LT with slow feet and short arms
How they would look performing in a ballet is not the only criteria for judging left tackles. Diehl does not fit even the most generous of LT standards but makes up for it with discipline and intelligence. The results are what matters. If Carimi only gave up one sack all year, that tells me he has left tackle ability. He might not be the quickest on his feet, but with his strength he probably has a better punch and more ability to take a bull rush or push a rusher past him. If I’m big Mario Williams, and I see Costanzo or Sherrod across from me, I’m going right at them. Foot speed won’t matter. Costanzo at least knows what he’s doing out there. Poor Sherrod only knows run blocking. Which is one of the reasons the Giants have sat Beatty on the bench for two years.
I think RT can be worth a 1st round pick
For years, the RT was a run blocker and the LDE was a run stopper. But I look around the league now and see a lot more pass rushers at LDE. Brandon Graham was not drafted by Philly in the 1st round for his run defense. So you cannot just stick anyone out there at RT anymore. Ask Cincy fans where Palmer is getting pressure from. Playing castoffs at RT just will not cut it anymore.
Carimi would look splendid in a Bears uni
God knows we need the help lol
Guns dont kill people. Brian Urlacher kills people.
Damnit.
Carimi is one of my favourite guys in this draft. I’m praying that he falls to Oakland in the 2nd – we need to shore up our O-Line in the worst way.
