Rock out with your mock draft out: Chad Reuter

Chad Reuter of CBS Sports and NFL Draft Scout put his latest first-round mock draft up today.

As always, Reuter's mock is filled with a lot of sound choices. It may grab your attention that he has four quarterbacks in the top 10, but maybe it shouldn't.

Obviously he has Carolina taking Andrew Luck first overall. But after that, Reuter backs it up in his explanation for giving San Francisco Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett. Reuter writes:

Quarterback needs of teams in the top 10 --and the likelihood of reduced contracts allowed by a rookie wage scale in the new CBA -- may help the strong-armed Mallett to be picked early.

Star-divide

Makes sense. Along with the benching of Donovan McNabb, that also may be cause enough to give the Redskins Jake Locker eighth overall. Also, as Rob Staton of Seahawks Draft has pointed out, 'Skins coach Mike Shanahan is considered to like Locker.

The only disagreeable part I see in Reuter's mock is the offensive tackles Nate Solder and DeMarcus Love in the first round. While it could happen, it maybe shouldn't. I don't see either as first-round players. Of course, performances in the Senior Bowl could change that opinion.

So check out Reuters mock here. You can also (and should) follow him on Twitter here.

7 offensive linemen in the first round – Haven’t seen one with that many yet, and I agree with Reuter 100%. When you look around the NFL, there’s a crazy inordinate number of teams that desperately need help along the OL. If teams want to improve their OL’s, they’ll have to reach a little… and reach they will.

Lineman always rise at the combine because its such a coveted position. There will be at least two tackles in the top 10

Reurter is out of his mind.

There is no way the Cardinals pass on Newton, Mallett and Locker to take another first round DT. Even on the presumption that they acquire a viable veteran QB prior to the draft they have other far more pressing needs they can address without straying from the board. Prince Amukamara or Da’Quan Bowers would be of vastly greater benefit.

by hadrarius on Dec 21, 2010 3:33 PM EST reply actions

This scenario would provide Dallas with a lot of choices.

We could address our needs in any myriad of ways with Nick Fairley, Derek Sherrod, or even Robert Quinn. I think Fairley would definitely be the best choice though,.

i agree w/ you about Solder not being a 1st round pick… some are way too high on him

Starting to really like the idea of Carimi as the Giants pick

tho of course that eventually means he won’t be. But he does fit especially if Kareem McKenzie is not re-signed (which would NOT make sense, but probable it is)

Unless there is a great player in the secondary available. You all SURE need it

Their secondary is entirely young guys.

Just like the Patriots, whom many seem too fond to mock CBs to as well. Give their secondaries time to learn rather than continually giving them more of what they already have.

two of the top four guys on Kiper's board are CB's

but DT is way, way more important

Patriots have picked a secondary player in the first two rounds...

…in each of the past 4 drafts, so there’s clearly precedence. I think if the Patriots take anyone, it will be a safety.

Glover Quinn is getting burned too often. He should be a nickel corner.

The Panther's shouldn't either. But has he played his way in to the #1 spot?

Defensive tackle is important, and to throw Clausen away as a sunk cost would be a mistake.

Something I don't see is how the Falcons will take a CB.

They’re very high on Dunta Robinson and even higher on the guy across from him, Brent Grimes. I don’t see them drafting a replacement at 31st.

Granted, I don’t see who they would pick at the moment, so

Nickel Backs still play a LOT in this league. And there is always a good chance of one of the two starters going down.

That's a bit high for a Nickel Back, isn't it?

Then again, the Jets took Kyle Wilson last year in the first…

The Browns did it with Joe Haden at #7. Then Eric Wright had a disappointing year and Haden stole his spot.

I'm with you buddy.

Falcons won’t pick a CB. The secondary has been much maligned but people arent taking the style of defense in to account. Grimes is a beast and Dunta is getting better and we are quite full at nickel back. My hunch is WR, DE or C in the early rounds.

Rule #1: Double tap.

I'd be happy with that Patriots draft...

…because both are potential 3 down players. However, I think Quinn’s lack of coverage experience would deter the Patriots from taking him. The Patriots already have Tully Banta-Cain, Jermaine Cunningham and Eric Moore as OLBs who cannot drop into coverage. They need an OLB at 6’3, 255 who can set an edge against the run, rush the QB and drop into coverage.

by Richard Hill on Dec 21, 2010 6:07 PM EST reply actions

Quinn would be way beyond those other guys level though. You can find a coverage linebacker late®

by TheRealSlimShady on Dec 22, 2010 12:21 AM EST up reply actions

But Quinn's added value over Cunningham...

…isn’t worth a first round pick, especially if he’s not a fully complete player. The Patriots will only spend a first round pick on an every down player and Quinn isn’t a proven coverage player. Because the Pats can grab a cover OLB later, I think they don’t go OLB in the first, unless it’s a player who has proven they can drop back and still have a final move to reach the quarterback.

Quinn’s a great prospect, I just don’t think he adds an additional dimension over a current player on the roster that warrants a first round pick by the Patriots.

by Richard Hill on Dec 22, 2010 2:39 AM EST up reply actions

Banta-Cain hasn’t been too special this year. And isn’t he like 31?

Mike Marra is the worst Division 1 Starter in college basketball

by TheRealSlimShady on Dec 22, 2010 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

Banta-Cain is average...

…but is good at LOLB for the Patriots. Banta-Cain isn’t a three down player for the Patriots and Quinn, while he’s an upgrade over Banta-Cain in every facet, isn’t a three down player either. I’d love to take him and the more I watch him, the more I like him, but I can’t see the Patriots taking him unless he drops to their second pick.

He’s still a great player. I just don’t think it’s the Patriots MO to take him.

Zing!

But seriously how does a professional forget that all divisions need to be represented in the Playoffs. I guess he’s just going by Power Rankings, but still you’re a professional Reuters get it right.

I still don't see the Jets taking a WR in the 1st round

especially Floyd and even more so if two Defensive ends like Heyward and Bailey are there, they need to get younger up front, find some pass rush or grab a safety that could actually cover some one more than they need a receiver.

by andrew21 on Dec 21, 2010 6:29 PM EST reply actions

Yea, the Jets offensive problems are not at receiver.

They are if Edwards and Holmes walk

Trading for one player with pending assault charges and one with pending drug charges tells you what they think of the rest of their crop.

The Jets have built their team through FA and trades

Trading away draft picks, if they have a hole, they just buy a player. It’s why Faneca was cut. They bought Woody, Pace, Scott for big money. Big contract extensions to Ferguson, Mangold, Ellis, Thomas, Revis. In addition to the WRs they also have to resign Cromartie and Harris. I think either Edwards or Holmes goes.

Being a Buckeyes and Bengals fan, I might just cry if Heyward goes to Pittsburgh.

Seeing Thad Gibson go to my most hated team last year sucked enough. The last thing I want is for Heyward to go join him.

I doubt we take him though

We have a need of some talent in the secondary and O-line. I just don’t see it happening

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

mock draft comment

the cardnials will take Ryan Mallet. The Forthy niners with their new coach who ever that might be will offer the world to Carolina to get their hands on Luck…from Stanford
and the Seahawks will get/ take Jake Locker because he only wants to play for the seahawks and every team in the league knows it. so my advice for the redskins and the vikings would be don;t even think about drafting Jake Locker because if you do he will play for a year or two then he’s gone.
