Even with suspension, Terrelle Pryor shouldn't enter NFL Draft

Photo

Terrelle Pryor is on record saying he'll return to Ohio State for his senior season.

Now that he's been suspended the first five games of 2011, should he? That's the question Pryor and juniors DeVier Posey Dan Herron, Mike Adams and Solomon Thomas.

As a pro prospect, Pryor has improved as a natural passing quarterback but still has a lot of room for growth. Mainly, his mechanics may need work and he'll have to adjust his decision making.

Star-divide

The Ohio State offense doesn't ask Pryor to make a lot of pro-style reads and he can lock on to his receiver and wait for him to get open. He gets most of his passing work done to the outside, which shows he doesn't have to work through multiple reads. Because of that, his timing may not be ready for the NFL.

He also has to do better on drop backs holding the ball high and tight. Pryor tends to drop the ball and can get it knocked out fairly easily. Pryor's also has suspect footwork. He doesn't always reset his feet when he has to move around the pocket and needs to plant and throw better.

All of that considered, Pryor has improved as a throwing quarterback. He's not Cam Newton at this point and still needs another year.

But now that it will be shorter, and probably impede his growth, will he skip off to the NFL? If he does, Pryor may not get picked before fellow project quarterback Jake Locker.

Thats

A tough one. He should almost enter in my mind. It could be hard to really improve his stock anymore than what it is in 8 games next year. I bet he could still get picked up second or third round this year. I’d definitely have him ahead of Stanzi and company on my board.

He could even go in the first

to some idiot like Al Davis or Synder. He has the gifts he just needs some time on the bench.

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

Its possible

If I were a team I’d be more than willing to spend time with him, especially if there was already a reliable QB in place. Once you teach that guy the postition, he is a surefire superstar.

Hell, if he is there in the third Jags should grab him.

If he tests well

and this post last year indicates he will then he could easily shoot up the boards

He shouldn't

but he will. I dont entirely blame him, his stock will take a major fall next year from this. Might as well go now and get that paycheck a year early, even if it may be a bit smaller

I'm going to have to say

When you miss 5 games in a season it’s going to be hard to move his stock up too much higher. He won’t have enough time to make his way up the draft boards to say he’s improved from the year before. And typically with these suspensions in the NCAA it may limit how much practice time he can have etc. So he might not actually look that great when he finally gets back in.

I mean the bigger issue is, his character is really in question. Living in columbus, and his age group I’ve been around him a few times at the club scene, I can say I don’t want him on my teams. He told everyone he’s matured from when he first got there but I think 2,500 dollars worth of stuff is showing otherwise.

All this being said play this bowl game with everything you got and make it happen TP. I don’t fault him for coming out if he does. It’s his choice and I think it may be in his best interest because his draft stock most likely won’t be able to go up much.

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

highly talented ohio state player with character issues

get the feeling that he is going to go to the Bengals in the second round?

by Sheffieldbengal on Dec 23, 2010 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

I think if he has a good bowl he will go pro

If his last game tape is a 3 pick effort than I can understand staying, but if he puts up good numbers. Remember since they won’t be eligible for the Senior Bowl Pryor and Newton will set their draft stocks with the workouts. If Newton is this top 10 talent and Pryor has better workouts than him (or at least the same) it could help Pryor’s stock.

In my opinion if a team is willing to sit Pryor for a full season and really develop him they could have one heck of a prospect.

I think Pryor needs the development

He’ll get it even if he’s suspended. Teams won’t care about his performance in the bowl game. They should already have a grade on him by now, and it wouldn’t be affected much by the suspension or by his BG performance. He’d get drafted but not as high as next year I bet.
Posey, however, should come on out. His stock probably won’t improve next year. I’ll bet he’s second rounder this year and next.

I don't see TP

wowing anyone without having a full season under his belt.

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

Pryor is a multi-year project

One year of sitting on a pro bench is not going to do it. He is athletic but needs major work. At this point he is the next JaMarcus or Vick. Does it matter if he sits in college or the pros? Pros is probably better for him. But I cannot see a team using a high pick on him. If you give him a 5-year deal, he might not be productive until years 3 or 4. If he came back for Ohio State next year and showed he could be a pocket QB, then I would feel comfortable moving him up the draft board.

2 Questions

1. Is a he a QB or a WR?

2. With a stellar combine whats the highest he can go (raiders don’t have a 1st remember that)

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

Enter the draft.

If the suspension holds at 5 games then he isn’t the starting QB. That’s almost half the season. That means in the spring and early fall he isn’t the starter, for five games where he is away from the team he isn’t the starter.

That’s a lot of time and effort spent on Braxton Miller. If the team is winning and Miller is playing well (he looks pretty good) do they bring in Prior and risk upsetting the team right as the schedule is heating up? That’s not a Tressel move. If Miller stinks and the team loses some games then he comes back the hero, but if not. . .

Hard to say he’ll develop in an offense that doesn’t challenge him while not receiving the lions share of attention while they simplify said offense even more to accommodate a new starter.

He’d be better off sitting through the lockout working with a QB coach learning his new teams offense or watching from the sidelines in the NFL than doing the same thing at OSU.

Pryor should have ample time during the 5 game suspension

to bone up on his receiving and blocking skills. He’s gonna need them.

by dbcouver on Dec 26, 2010 7:42 PM EST reply actions

Depends on if he comes out as a QB or WR/TE

As a QB he will be a 5th rounder or lower no matter if he is in the 2011 or 2012 draft. Yeah, I have seen folks hype him as possibly better than Locker or such but there is no reason to believe that hype. His throwing motion is pretty bad plus his decision making in scanning the field is very poor. Then he does not have the Tebow hype so instead of being judged like Tebow or Newton he will be looked at more like Troy Smith (and not Michael Vick). 5th rounder, in other words. And that is if he comes out or stays in school.

Now if he exits the Sugar Bowl and says that he will take being a WR/TE then all sorts of buzz will ensue and he will get drafted at least 2-3 rounds higher. He could go in round 1 if he nails his workouts and why wouldn’t he?

Depends on a lot

but no one is talking about the 1 thing most all college players want….a national championship. If they can get through the first 5 games and he’s told he’ll be the starter in week 6 (presumably w/a chance at a title) I think he’d come back. If not he goes pro at probably at a lesser $ value, but hey thats his fault. One things for sure though, with an NFL contract he can pay for all the tats he wants….
