Peter King: Cam Newton could be a top 10 pick

Photo

In today's Monday Morning Quarterback, Peter King of Sports Illustrated wrote that he believes that Auburn's Cam Newton will be a top 10 in the 2011 NFL Draft. That is, unless damaging information comes out about Newton.

King says he "conceptually" talked about Newton to four NFL teams. The conceptual qualifier is because teams cannot talk about college athletes with eligibility remaining.

Two of the teams King spoke with said they would seriously look at Newton in the first round. One of the teams told King that teams are built with solid guys. So this is where Newton's past transgressions can come back to bite him. Yes, they can be trivialized, but the issues are still there.

So, as King says, Newton has an asterisk next to his name. For me, it will remain there up until he gets selected.

Check out MMQ here. It's a weekly must-read.

The past 2 games against Bama and SC

have shown how good of a passer he can be. I don’t doubt for a second he’d be considered in the top 10. Of course that’s just based on his natural talent and what you see on the field.

So given the Raiders aren’t drafting in the first, the only teams that select him will actually ask him NFL questions to see how much he really understands.

Is he Jamarcus Russell will probably be a big question going forward..to which I don’t think he is. I get this sense that Newton has “it”, he just makes big plays that help the team win.

I think that asterisk has to be next to his name even after he’s selected. I think its a 50/50 shot that he’s just napalm for whatever team drafts him. Thats a guy who not only kills his coach but a GM and the entire personnel department.

Let the beasting begin.

He's a great athlete

But look at Tebow, I like Newton, but I’m not taking an early pick on him, last 1st round or early 2nd, sure, no question.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

Newton is a better pro prospect than Tebow

Newton

Is a far better passer, and I’m gonna say it, a little better runner than Tebow. Did you see the SEC Championship. He put on a passing clinic.

The SEC Championship won me over. Great arm strength and accuracy. Better arm than Tebow. More accurate than Russell. Neither really can be compared to Newton.

As a 1-year major program starter, the only question is the mental part of the game. He may need to sit a year.

I think the true time we see if he can play NFL

Is when he’s at the combine and doing drills, till he does that it’s just all speculation of can he translate his game into the pro-offense. He’s got elite size and arm, with the ability to stretch out the play (sorta like big ben).
It’s believable with the amount of top 10 teams rumored to taking a QB (Carolina, Cinci, Buffalo, Arizona, 49ers, Vikings.. Even Detroit has talked about drafting a QB worrying Stafford’s to injury prone. )

So say.. Carolina takes luck.. Cinci takes Mallett, Buffalo takes Locker.. it could happen. Not saying it will but with the need of a QB in so many teams right now, wouldn’t surprise me.

Sports = Money.

I don’t think King does MMQB to win Pulitzers. He gets tons of information and presents it. I like information more than flowery prose.
