Rock out with your mock draft out: Todd McShay
Todd McShay, the head honcho of ESPN's Scouts Inc., is back with his latest mock draft, and it's a doozy. This is protected by ESPN's Insider pay window, but if you're a member, find it here.
There are some startling changes to this mock draft. Maybe it's just that time of the draft season when everyone is sick of doing the same mock over and over. But McShay takes it to a whole new level giving South Florida defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul to Tampa Bay with the third overall pick.
This is the same Pierre-Paul who only played one year of top-level college football and only had 6.5 sacks. That pick caught me so off guard that it took an extra minute to notice McShay had Gerald McCoy going No. 1 overall and not Ndamukong Suh.
Other surprises include offensive tackle Trent Williams going to Oakland eighth and South Florida safety Nate Allen going in the first.

I think he's just trying to create a 'shock value'
to his mock draft so people sign up for insider.
JPP may blow up his workout…but the fact remains he wasn’t a standout player in college. “high ceiling” maybe, but at least when the Bucs took Gaines Adams (RIP) he was pretty damn good in college.
JPP?
Rectum? Damn near killed em!
the more im ready about adams
im so sad about his dealth. how come i didn’t hear anything about it? we all heard henry but i never heard about adams

It was fairly well reported
Heart problems I believe, however, it was nowhere near as big as Slim’s (RIP) to the media because it had no suspicion of criminality to it.
Rest In Peace Both of you, taken too soon.

one thing that would be nice is if people actually postedwhat was in an insider article. not everyone here has insider. I don’t really think it is worth the money for me right now to get it. I just don’t have a ton of money.
If someone posts it, I will delete it. It’s pay content for a reason. So if we post it, we can be busted big time.

who did he pick for the Giants?
If you’re a scared of being ‘busted’….initials and position are OK (please!)

a certain DL from UCLA
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters

then just say its out there and don’t provide a link.
providing a link is like teasing someone in front of their face that isn’t an insider.
and who did he pick for the browns (just hints…)
I think he did that......

I think he's predicting that JPP goes off at the combine and pulls a Jason Smith
I’ve seen Trent Williams at 5-10 in a few mocks here, but it seems like he’s more of a RT than a LT.
The other thing about mock drafts is that they aren’t really all that predictive this far out. One purpose that they do serve, though, is to get a bunch of names out there.
Trent Williams does make some sense
the Raiders could use a RT over a LT (Mario Henderson’s pretty good for a LT). I guess maybe he’s got him over someone like Anthony Davis or Bruce Campbell (both who are good run blockers and could be RT…they’re good pass blockers too, which is good)
Rectum? Damn near killed em!
by FreeBradshaw on Feb 10, 2010 4:43 PM EST up reply actions
But drafting a RT at the 8 doesn't like a great value pick (for the position)
although people are talking about drafting a safety with the top 5. I’ve also seen Williams mocked to the Hawks or the Skins here.
I dunno about that....
teams even as they have a LT on the squad (Carolina, Detroit, even the Bengals with Andre Smith) draft a player to play RT.
RT may not be as “important” as LT, but the QB will get killed from the other side with a pile of crap RT

by FreeBradshaw on Feb 10, 2010 4:55 PM EST up reply actions
I disagree. except for a few teams, the weak side rusher who goes against the LT, is much much better. the giants may be an exception b/c on the strong side, they have kiwanuka and tuck rotate usually.
if you add up sacks from strong side guys and weak side guys, the guys on the weak side average over 4 more sacks each. thats also going up against the best pass blocking OLineman. those DEs are not as much of a factor blitzing against the QB. very few teams have an elite guy on that side. it is not as much of a need.
a pile of crap RT will actually give up similar sack numbers as a decent LT. an LT has to go against guys like Mario Williams and Jared allen every game where the RTs go up against guys like antonio smith and ray edwards every game. a pile of crap RT oftentimes goes up against a pile of crap rusher. very rarely does a LT go up against a pile of crap player.
Example: I saw a stat somewhere that Joe thomas gave up about 4 sacks this year. whether he gave up more or less is not really the point but he gave up about 4 sacks. this sounds bad but it is actually quite good for a LT, DeBrickisaw ferguson gave up about 8 sacks and jake long gave up about 4 as well. on the right side, the browns had John St. Clair. if you want a pile of crap RT, you found him. in the 14 games he started, he gave up 5 sacks. now this guy was a turnstile, and he only gave up one more sack than Joe Thomas?? surely this cannot be true.
the point is, that a team can survive with a pile of crap RT. not only is the rusher on that side usually nothing special, but he also can see the guy coming and get rid of it easier.
just giving up sacks doesn't give 1/10th the picture
Also…I know for a fact Tuck lines up all over the line, both DE spots and DT as well, so that doesn’t account for that.
I also wouldn’t exactly call teams like Cleveland or Oakland ‘surviving’.
Sure you can get away with it…but if you can get 2 dominant bookends it can open up a lot. Shoring up the whole thing is a good idea, I’d rather not have a pile of crap at any position

yes. I am not saying in any way that guys like that are good, but that when you say:
the QB will get killed from the other side with a pile of crap RT
That really isn’t the case. for a QB to truly get killed on any consistent basis it would literally have to be the worst starter by far in the NFL at RT. most guys are usually fairly competent. I am not saying it doesn’t help to have a good guy there, but the value of a RT is not what you were making it out to be.
Ask the Niners if they want a quality LT
Having said that, I think Bruce Campbell would be a more likely pick, he’s more athletic, and that lets them move Henderson to the right side.

by Flowing Willow on Feb 11, 2010 5:44 AM EST up reply actions
and the value of RT is more then what your making it out to be
teams have drafted players in the first round to play the right side.
Rectum? Damn near killed em!
by FreeBradshaw on Feb 11, 2010 7:43 AM EST up reply actions
I am not saying they haven’t. an elite guy at the position is worth drafting high. but to say that the value is at all comparable to a LT in the draft is ludicrous. when you look at how high RTs are drafted usually and how often they are drafted in the first round, they are similar in value to a 4-3 OLB or a TE. all 3 positions get drafted in the first maybe every other year. RT is a valuable position but nowhere near as valuable as an LT.
that's why I never said that....
All I’m saying is a team can and will draft an OT in the first round because their offensive line sucks, and its an upgradable position.
Just like the Raiders.
Some teams value it quite high. I know the Giants gave Kareem McKenzie 7yrs $37.5million to play RT, basically as much as they play the LT.

Remember
it is the Raiders, so making a poor choice does make sense.
Also, no Claussen in the 1st? That’s interesting.
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
FAIL...
McCoy going #1 overall would be really surprising, but not completely out of the realm of possibility. JPP on the other hand is a 2nd round talent… no way in Hell does he sniff the top 5. He might go mid-first but even that would be a reach.
"Jason Smith? Why the hell would anyone draft a converted TE first overall?"
At this time last year, Andre Smith and Michael Oher looked like locks for the top 5.
i dont think its very suprising
McCoy and Suh are very close in rating. If Suh asks for way more money than Mccoy does, the rams may take Mccoy

madness
I couldn’t disagree w more of his picks
But, what do I know?

More than McSuck
It amazes me he still has a job.
What gave that away?
But McShay takes it to a whole new level giving South Florida defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul to Tampa Bay with the third overall pick.
Mocking the Draft: Your NFL Draft source.
Coming from a TB guy,
The move does not make sense. JPP is maybe Mid to late 1st round talent depending on if someone wants to jump or not. Plus we have bigger issues than DE. Safety, DT, WR, then maybe a DE.
nate allen
Looking at McShay’s mock its really a mess. Trent Williams is a right tackle and at #8 thats crazy. I saw a lot of Nate Allen during the senior bowl practices, and he looked good. He was very fluid and was able to stick w/ the receivers in the 1 on 1 drills.
Jon Dove
Nate Allen is good... but he won't be a first round pick, IMO

if he was really about the shock value it'd be Saint Timothy Tebow.

The surprises for me
Kareem Jackson in round 1 with Benn and Pouncey and Nate Allen. Pierre Paul at #3 I found odd, I think the highest he goes even with a crazy combine is Oakland. I don’t see four tackles in the top 8. I don’t get the Chargers and Best, yes he is a homerun threat but Best/Sproles doesn’t seem right to me.
McShay, Todd McShay you hear me boy? It's me TJ and I'm coming for your damn job boy! Oh be scared, be very scared McShay.
Suh
If Suh doesn’t blow up in the Big XII Championship game is he in the #1 overall pick position or considered a great player who is worthy of top 10 consideration?
