Mock Draft 2.1

1. St. Louis- DT- Ndamukon Suh- Nebraska

- St. Louis could go quarterback in this spot and the recent development that Sam Bradford should be 100% for his pro day and workouts raises that possibility. However, I still think that Coach Spagnola will push hard for Suh and the fact that he is the best and most sure fire prospect, will ensure he gets his man.p>

2. Detroit- DT- Gerald McCoy- Oklahoma

- Detroit has a lot of needs and defensive line is one of them. McCoy is a disruptive force and would help in both the running game and creating pressure on the quarterback. Maybe they could trade down and pick up some extra picks and go after someone like Joe Haden. But who is going to trade up? Maybe someone after Bradford?

3. Tampa Bay- S- Eric Berry- Tennessee

- Berry is too good of a talent to pass up. The Bucs need playmakers on the defense and Berry arguably the top defensive playmaker, behind Suh. Tampa could go for Derrick Morgan to sure up their pass rush but Berry’s talent will win out.

4. Washington- OT- Russell Okung- Oklahoma State

- Washington could go for Bradford and that is very likely but I still feel that Shanahan will give Campbell a shot. The offensive line was a major issue last season and Okung could anchor the left side for a long time.

5. Kansas City- LB- Rolando McClain- Alabama

- This is really high for an inside linebacker, but it’s a major need for the Chiefs. The Chiefs showed last season that they will reach to fill need, will they do that again? In this mock Bradford is still on the board so this could be a really hot trade spot.

6. Seattle- QB- Sam Bradford- Oklahoma

- The recent news that Bradford will be 100% for his pro day and workouts really elevated his stock. I believe firmly that coaches and GMs fall in love with players during the draft process and the fact that Bradford will be able to work out helps him a lot. Seattle needs to find a quarterback of the future; they may not be in a better position than they are this year.

7. Cleveland- CB- Joe Haden- Florida

- Haden is by far the best corner in this draft. Cleveland really needs to upgrade their secondary and Haden is a perfect start.

8. Oakland- OT- Anthony Davis- Rutgers

- The Raiders need to stabilize the offensive line if JaMarcus or any quarterback is expected to succeed. Davis has a ton of athletic ability and the potential to be a dominate left tackle in the NFL.

9. Buffalo- WR- Dez Bryant- Oklahoma State

- Jimmy Clausen is a possibility here but Coach Gailey has shown that he could get production out of lower level talent. Dez Bryant adds a dynamic playmaker to the offense and whoever is at quarterback well be happy with this pick. The Bills might be making the switch to a 3-4 defense so if someone rises up the board that fits the scheme, which could be the pick.

10. (X) Denver (from Chicago) - DT- Dan Williams- Tennessee

- Denver misses out on both Dez Bryant and Rolando McClain but Dan Williams is fast rising prospect that can fill in at nose tackle.

Star-divide

11. (X) Jacksonville- DE- Derrick Morgan- Georgia Tech

- Jacksonville needs help in the pass rush department and Morgan is the best defensive end prospect in this year’s draft. This could be the potential steal of the first round because Morgan has a ton of talent.

12. Miami- DE/OLB- Brandon Graham- Michigan

- Graham had an impressive senior bowl week and that has lead to his rise up the draft boards. Graham showed that he can get to the quarterback with ease and is a constant threat to disrupt a play. Miami needs some help at the OLB position and Graham can help in that department.

13. San Francisco- S- Earl Thomas- Texas

- Thomas is a ball hawking cover safety and that’s exactly what the 49ers need. The 49ers need help at offensive tackle but Thomas’s value meets position of need here.

14. Seattle (from Denver)- RB- CJ Spiller - Clemson

- Seattle needs some speed in their offense and Spiller has a lot of speed. Spiller can solve the Seahawks running back problems. Seattle still needs help along the offensive line but that could be filled with later round picks.

15. New York Giants- DT- Brian Price- UCLA

- The Giants defensive line just didn’t get the job done last season. Price can be a disruptive force for the Giants defense.p>

16. (X) San Francisco (from Carolina) - T- Trent Williams- Oklahoma

- San Francisco needs an upgrade at the right tackle position and Williams has the potential to be a dominate right tackle. Williams might be a right tackle only because he struggled some last season at the left tackle position.

17. (X) Tennessee- DE- Jason Paul- Pierre - South Florida

- Paul- Pierre had one very successful season at South Florida but his lack of game experience could be an issue. However, he has all the physical tools to generate a pass rush.

18. Pittsburgh - G/T- Mike Iupati- Idaho

- Iupati is Pittsburgh’s kind of guy. He is big and physical and can help along the offensive line from day 1.

19. (X) Atlanta- CB- Patrick Robinson-Florida State

- Atlanta needs help in the secondary and Robinson will be battling Kyle Wilson to be the 2nd cornerback off the board. Robinson has a lot of speed and is a willing contributor in the run game.

20. (X) Houston- CB- Kyle Wilson- Boise State

- There are some questions surrounding Dunta Robinson and his pending free agency. Wilson had a very impressive week at the Senior Bowl and elevated his stock.

21. Cincinnati- WR- Arrelious Benn- Illinois

- Cincinnati needs a young play maker to add to its receiver core. Benn is going to have a good day at the combine and show that his lack of production was due to the inconsistent quarterback play at Illinois. Benn has added value in the return game and could replace Mr. Fumble (Caldwell) as the primary kick returner.

22. New England- LB- Sergio Kindle- Texas

- Kindle fills a need for the Patriots, as a pass rushing linebacker. Kindle has a chance to raise his stock if he has a good combine and impressive workouts.

23. Green Bay- OT- Brian Bulaga- Iowa

- Green Bay needs a lot of help at the tackle position and Bulaga can step right in and be a major upgrade. Aaron Rodgers is very pleased with this pick.

24. Philadelphia- DE- Carlos Dunlap- Florida

- Dunlap is a top 10 talent but his recent arrest on DUI charges dropped his stock. Some also question his drive and motors but he has all the talent to wreak havoc on opposing offenses.

25. Baltimore- TE- Jermaine Gresham- Oklahoma

- Baltimore needs to give Flacco as many weapons as possible. Gresham is coming off a major knee surgery but has a ton of potential.

26. Arizona- QB- Jimmy Clausen - Notre Dame

- Clausen really dropped in my latest mock draft. A lot of this has to do with the fact that nobody after Buffalo really needs a quarterback. There are some question marks about Clausen’s ability but he is worth the risk here for Arizona. Maybe Leinhart is the answer but if not they have a backup plan.

27. Dallas- S- Taylor Mays - USC

- Dallas needs help at safety and along the offensive line but it will be hard to pass up on the talent Mays. He has all the physical abilities but he needs to figure out the mental part of the game.

28. San Diego- RB- Jonathan Dwyer

- It’s almost a guarantee that LT is moving on and Darren Sproles cannot carry the load. Dwyer gives them a work horse back.

29. New York Jets- DE/OLB- Ricky Sapp- Clemson

- The Jets need someone that can do what Vernon Gholston couldn’t and Sapp has the potential to be that guy. Sapp is a gifted athlete and is capable of providing a consistent pass rush.

30. Minnesota- DT- Jared Odrick- Penn State

- Odrick elevated his stock at the Senior Bowl and Minnesota could need help on the defensive line w/ the possible retirement/suspension of Pat Williams.

31. Indianapolis- T- Charles Brown- USC

- The main focus of the Colts is to keep Peyton protected. While the offensive line was stable depth and talent is needed. Brown has the potential to become a very good left tackle.

32. New Orleans- LB- Navarro Bowman- PSU

- The Saints need some talent on the defensive side of the ball. Both starting outside linebackers are free agents and its possible for them to move on. Even if they return it would be hard to pass up on a talent like Bowman.

(X)- Position to be determined by coin flip

Giants

I see the Giants giving the DL another year to prove themselves after Canty, Bernard, Robbins and to an extent Cofield all struggled with injuries last year.

Throw in the money they spent on Price with what Bernard and Canty cost in FA and I see the Giants going a different position in the draft.

Ideally I would like to see the Giants move up as they are in a good position to do so in that they are already picking 15th.

If they do not move up I would like them to pick an OT to replace McKenzie with Beatty moving to LT and Diehl playing his more natural position of LG

by G Fan in England on Feb 11, 2010 7:33 AM EST reply actions

for who?

Who would you propose they move up to take?

by ct17 on Feb 11, 2010 10:39 PM EST up reply actions

Move up for

McClain if he is as good as advertised.

Maybe even Berry if he falls past the first few teams if they take QB and DL and McClain.

They would be the only two I would consider moving up for as a good OT will fall to 15th.

by G Fan in England on Feb 12, 2010 3:52 AM EST up reply actions

that would cost a lot

The points charts, for all they’re worth, indicate that it would cost us at least our 2nd rounder to move up to McClain or Berry territory. Can’t recall the Giants ever doing something similar, nor would I want them to. Eli is different case – franchise QBs go by different rules.

Right tackle is not a need as much as the defense. We have one more year of McKenzie, a great run blocker, average/below-average pass blocker, big contract. Diehl could play RT or LG. We could fill in the line later on or next year. DT is the bigger hole. Bernard and Robbins should be gone, Canty has never shown anything, Alford’s injury status is unknown. Cofield is a run stopper only.

by ct17 on Feb 12, 2010 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

I voted for them to pick Clausen as he is the # 1 QB right now.

Once Bradford shows that he can still throw the ball he may very well pass Clausen but I think it is a little ridiculous to project Bradford ahead of Clausen right now based on the report that he will be able to throw a football at the Oklahoma Pro Day.

I will remain sceptical until he throws and reevaluate then.

He has been off for a year and had two injuries to his throwing shoulder and then had surgery. I know people are comparing it to the Brees situation before he went to the Saints but really, those teams were right to be careful. I assume the Saints saw him throw before they signed him?

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 11, 2010 7:52 AM EST reply actions

even if Bradford played the whole season

I’d LOL at the idea of him being a top 10 pick.

Rectum? Damn near killed em!

by FreeBradshaw on Feb 11, 2010 8:11 AM EST up reply actions

There's also a difference in the systems they ran in college

Bradford should have a steeper learning curve, going from the spread offense to a pro-style offense, than Clausen, who will already have experience in a pro style offense. Bradford seems to have a higher ceiling than Clausen but also a more difficult road to becoming an NFL QB.

by ninjasocks on Feb 11, 2010 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

Ty Hill, Chris Long and Jason Smith

over Jay Cutler, Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez.

They’ll wait till next year huh…..its worked to perfection all these years so I’d expect the Rams to do it and the fans to like it I guess?

Rectum? Damn near killed em!

by FreeBradshaw on Feb 11, 2010 8:52 AM EST reply actions

Way to early

To anoint any of those QBS or Bash Long and Smith. Also none of the Qbs in this draft have the talent to be anywhere worthy of the #1 overall pick. There are really on 3 guys worthy of it and no one drafts S #1 overall.

by Flounder69 on Feb 11, 2010 9:16 AM EST up reply actions

Why do none of the QB's have the talent to be #1?

Interesting that I read this when I say that the Rams would be dumb to make the “safe” pick, that people say that no QB is worth the #1.

Why?

Rectum? Damn near killed em!

Clausen is worth it... 28 tds 4 ints a 68 comp rat.. in same westcoast O that the rams run

the most pro ready QB to EVER come out and some of the best numbers but uo by a J QB…

a QB is never ranked the best player in the draft a QB will never be the BPA.. QB is the most important position on your team

if Clausen isnt good enough for you no QB ever will be

and you can just take the “safe pick”(witch isnt even suh its berry) ever year and stay in the top 5 of the draft.. b/c a QB will never be that safe pick

by det32 on Feb 11, 2010 10:03 AM EST up reply actions

Someone over at Turf Show Times

was saying the best defense he faced all season was 28th ranked pittsburg so the level of competition wasn’t there. It makes it easier to inflate when you have tate and floyd at WR as well.

by Habte E on Feb 11, 2010 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

2007-2008 – 56.3 comp 1254 yards 7tds 6int
2008-2009 – 60.9 comp 3172 yards 25td 17int
2009-2010 – 68.0 comp 3722 yards 28tds 4int

i don’t care who you are playing 28tds 4 int is insane

basically what it come down to is if Clausen isn’t good enough for you no QB ever will be..

you don’t know if locker will be at your pick next year and even if he is there will be some on that your saying " o we have to pick this guy locker isn’t worth the pick" the rams need to take a risk.. they have picked the safe pick last 10 years and look where it has gotten them

by det32 on Feb 11, 2010 9:57 PM EST up reply actions

Clausen isn't a top 10 pick talent

Early in his time at ND his numbers are not as good because he didn’t have Tate and Floyd to save him. The vast majority of his throws are under 10 yards. His yard total and TDs are inflated due to the fact that Tate is a human highlight real. He is and will be a good WCO QB. If you put him on a talented WCO team, like philly, he will look awesome. If you don’t give him strong recievers, or expect him to carry the team with his arm, he won’t be able to. He is a college version of Hasselback. Put him on the right team and he will do very well. Put him on the rams and he is going to suck.
St Louis needs to have an organized approach to building up their team and a rookie QB is not the answer. They have so many talent holes that they need to trade back/bring in some other talent.

by stufr on Feb 13, 2010 8:22 AM EST up reply actions

really?

2006 135/256 1749yds 52.7% 7TD 13INT
2007 194/348 2523yds 55.7% 19TD 10INT
2008 235/383 3459yds 61.4% 25TD 10INT

This is from a certain #1 pick. I’m sure the fans of his team are pretty happy they made him the #1 overall pick.

They were 0-16 the year before, had about 3-5 players who were actually NFL caliber on the team too.

Don’t give me “too man holes to fill”.

One of those holes is QB, and its the biggest hole.

The Rams “organized” approach hasn’t done anything.

Bye, AP :(

by FreeBradshaw on Feb 13, 2010 8:58 AM EST up reply actions

I think your missing my point

I don’t think Clausen is that good of a prospect. I think that the Rams will be in the top 5 picks next year too. I think one of the reasons that Clausen came out this year is that it is a weak QB class. If he waited until next year he would have a senior season without Tate and then he would have to draft against Locker and Mallet. I think he was worried about falling behind them. If I was the Rams I would draft down, fill as many holes and get one of several better QBs next year.

by stufr on Feb 13, 2010 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

yup..

there’s the next year thing again.

Clausen’s as good as Matt Stafford last year. Leave it at that. You pass over Clausen, or Sam Bradford even…you’re passing over a potential franchise guy.

…what if next year the QB class seems similar?

What if there’s one or 2 QB’s in the class and they;re going 1 and 2..but the Rams have the 5th pick?

Bye, AP :(

by FreeBradshaw on Feb 13, 2010 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

Stafford is much better

He put up similar numbers against tougher defenses and has a much better arm.
Yes its a risk to wait, but when you have that much rebuilding to do, its worth thinking about

by stufr on Feb 13, 2010 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

also...

I’d think that Clausen would’ve been just fine putting up numbers at ND…Floyd and Rudolph are as good a WR/TE combo in the country..plus they got talent to burn there.

I’d say Clausen and Tate for that matter, their biggest decision to leave was cuz of Charlie Weiss leaving.

Not cuz he’s worried about Ryan Mallet or Jake Locker.

Clausen declared for the draft before Mallet and Locker decided they were going back….so even if Mallet and Locker declared…Clausen was in this draft.

I’d say it was more Mallet and Locker returned cuz Clausen declared.

Bye, AP :(

by FreeBradshaw on Feb 13, 2010 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

So the Lions improved how much last year?

Clausen is the most overrated QB to come out since Vince Young. He played in a fairly pass happy offense against a lot of garbage teams. The guy does not win the big games and has limited mobility, especially when you throw in the broken toe. Drafting him #1 is just going to be Tim Couch all over again.

by Flounder69 on Feb 13, 2010 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

Your mixing him up with Bradford....

Couch and Young played in a spread, shotgunish offense. Clausen came from a pro style offense with pro reads.

You ever see Clausen’s hand being held by the sideline, looking over before each play for the audible? Thought not.

The Lions didn’t improve much…but they have their QB of the future.

As someone who’s sat throw Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson and Drew Bledsoe….and now has a Franchise QB in Tony ROmo, I’d think that a Cowboy fan would understand the value of getting a franchise QB.

….guess not.

Bye, AP :(

by FreeBradshaw on Feb 13, 2010 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

Truthfully as a Seattle fan I would love it if St Louis drafts him

A. He won’t be there for us to make a mistake on
B. It will continue the trend of us pummeling you

He is a WCO QB who needs great talent around him to succeed. He won’t have that in St Louis.

by stufr on Feb 13, 2010 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

Sanchez with his 63 QB rating (on a team absolutely stacked with talent around him), Ryan and his across-the-board regression in year two as a pro and Cutler’s leading the league in INTs (33%+ to boot) are you pro examples? Funny that you don’t bring up Stafford, Russell, Quinn, Young (limited success due to defense and running game) and Leinart…

the QB's I mentioned are the ones the Rams specifically passed on

those are all QB’s you can build around more or less….

Bye, AP :(

by FreeBradshaw on Feb 11, 2010 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

I don't see them keeping Bulger

He’s too expensive this year and too damaged.

It looks like the Rams are probably getting sold, so I’m thinking that they’ll hold of on getting a QB if only so that they can let the new owners decide what direction they want to take the franchise. If the new owners decide to push the reset button, its going to be a lot easier to do it with Suh/McCoy on the roster than a rookie franchise QB due $70 million. The current owners will just punt on the decision and let the Khans figure out things next year.

Please god no Taylor Mays for Dallas

The guy can not cover and even though he is huge he really does not tackle very well. I do not want to draft any of the entitlement kids from USC if I can help it. The way your mock shapes up give us Bruce Campbell! He may be raw, but at least he is a legitimate need and 1rst round talent.

by Flounder69 on Feb 11, 2010 9:14 AM EST reply actions

He'll be an upgrade over Hamlin

In that he’s a faster, younger Hamlin.

by ninjasocks on Feb 11, 2010 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

Not as big an upgrade...

…as we can get by drafting OL, and that’s assuming he plays right away, which isn’t Phillip’s history.

The D played lights out most of the year. The biggest flaw in the D was the relatively small number of turnovers they forced, and Mays didn’t pick up many INTs while at USC. I’m not totally opposed to picking up a S early on, but I don’t want it to be here, and I don’t want it to be Mays.

Give me the best available OL here. He won’t start, but we need some quality depth to develop.

by RickT on Feb 11, 2010 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

Different sport but...

…does anyone else feel like Taylor Mays could be the Brandon Jennings of the upcoming NFL draft? Last year, people couldn’t wait to have the opportunity to bring Mays to their team. But one year removed, people can’t help but fixate on his shortcomings. The fact of the matter is, this kid’s a playmaker with all the physical gifts in the world. With the right coaching, he COULD be one of the elite safeties of the NFL.

by BeastOfNFCEast on Feb 11, 2010 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe the Giants can take him then

Very unlikely that Dallas would draft him after watching Roy struggle in coverage for so many years.

I agree but....

In the Senior Bowl he made that pick while making a good read on the QB and move on the ball. During the regular season he would have never seen the ball, he would have his head down making a spectacular hit. I’m wondering if he is reading the press/his agent is telling him that he needs some ball skills or he is not going to get drafted as well as he thought. Its one play, so it doesn’t mean much, but it made me think.

And choosing poorly on 1rst round QBs makes you the Browns

or the Raiders. For every Matt Ryan and Ben Rothlisburger, the NFL is littered with Leafs, Akili Smiths, Tim Couch, Rick Mierer, Jamarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, etc… Also find it funny of the top 10 passing leaders this season only 4 were 1rst round picks and 2 were UDFAs. For all of the Sanchez lovers, he finished 28th in QB rating, 23rd in yardage, and had the 2nd most interceptions behind only Jay Cutler, and tied with Matthew Staford. Heck Sanchez and Stafford were 29th and 30th respectively in completion %. These are not the kind of #s that suggest they were the smart picks.

CJ Spiller

I’ve noticed that several mock drafts have Seattle taking CJ Spiller, but I have to ask, “WHY?” Not that he isn’t good enough to be worthy of that high a selection, but it seems like a poor fit. One of the few bright spots from the Seahawks’ abysmal season was an undersized but lightning-quick pass-catching RB named Justin Forsett. Why would they draft another back that does exactly the same thing when their line couldn’t keep their already-gimpy QB off the turf and couldn’t open up any holes big enough for somone over 5’9" 185? And it’s not like anyone would mistake the Seattle defense as being “stout” or even “mediocre.” With a team as bad in as many places as Seattle is, to spend a high pick on Spiller just seems imprudent.

by BeastOfNFCEast on Feb 11, 2010 12:35 PM EST reply actions

People don't think Forsett can carry a full load all season.

Also, Spiller would be a big help on the return game. And we don’t really have any speedy home run threats.

Dream Draft: Clausen, Brown (#24), Houston, McKnight, Mike Williams, Black, McManis, DTN.

by LantermanC on Feb 11, 2010 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with the Beast 100%. I don't get Spiller going to Seattle at all.

Forsett was an amazing late round pick, now you want to bury him in your depth chart? If you go for an RB why not a guy to complement Forsett, say Dwyer or Dixon, and replace J. Jones?

The holes at LT and in your defence are ripe for repair with your two first round picks. Hell, you could even take a QB at #6 if the Rams and Skins leave one of Bradford or Clausen.

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 11, 2010 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

Almost all the people at fieldgulls

love Spiller for Seattle. We know we HAVE to upgrade our offense, and none of the top tier OL (other than Iupati) fit our ZBS. So, any offensive players with our 2 picks that aren’t OL is a good start to draft for them.

by Patton on Feb 11, 2010 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure that Iupati fits the ZBS

Though he’s athletic for a guy his size, he’s probably too big.

by ninjasocks on Feb 11, 2010 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

Campbell played primarily in a 2point stance

as someone who’s 6’7, 310,he concerns me. Baluga plays like a mauler, however I’m not sure how he’ll be able to play that style in the NFL.

Brown fits beautifully, I hope he’s there at 40, or we find a way to trade back up into the late 20’s to grab him.

by Patton on Feb 11, 2010 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

Charles Brown fits the ZBS, and I would say he does so more than Iupati

Besides, Alex Gibbs is known for playing O-linemen no higher than 315 lbs. Iupati is 330. Sure, he could lose some weight, but that won’t happen before the combine. We’ d have to see how well he impresses coaches with how he moves at 330. If Gibbs likes him, but not his weight, then I wouldn’t be surprised to see Iupati forced to lose weight if Seattle drafts him.

Talents that I covet:

Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Sam Bradford, Mike Iupati, Golden Tate, Earl Thomas, and Freddie Barnes

by Carl Shinyama on Feb 13, 2010 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

A couple reasons (in addition to Lanterman's excellent points).

One, Forsett doesn’t have top-end speed. He’s quick to and through the hole, but not open-field fast. Spiller is. Two, Seattle’s hiring of Alex Gibbs to run the ZBS suggests that they might not focus on first-round O-line talent. Gibbs has crafted solid O-lines from lower picks in the past. Third, Seattle’s defense actually wasn’t too bad. The secondary certainly needs help, but Berry will be gone by 6 (and even if he’s not, a QB might be a higher priority) and certainly won’t last to 14. (If Haden fell to 14 I’d love to get him!) Getting Lofa Tatupu back will also help the D. I agree that the ’Hawks need help in a lot of places, but RB is indeed one of them.

That comment about Alex Gibbs is not true.

He has not been anymore successful than anyone else with lower round OL picks and his teams have picked linemen in the top three rounds close to what the average teams do.

While Gibbs was a coach his teams picked six OL in the first three rounds. Two in the first.

I looked at eleven other teams:

KC – Three with all of them in the first round.
Oak. – Nine with three in the first.
SD – Five with ZERO in the first.
Det. – Seven with five in the first. I’m a Lions fan and this hurts. What a waste.
Giants – Five with one in the first.
Jets – Five with two in the first.
Philly – Six with three in the first.
NE – Six with two in the first.
Pitts – Ten with three in the first.
Miami – Six with two in the first.
Indy – Four with one in the first.

My lunch time ran out so I ended it here. Five teams picked early less than Gibbs’, and three picked the same number, leaving three picking more.

Funny the three teams picking more OL early arguably have the worst Offensive Lines [Detroit, Oakland, and Pittsburgh].

So let’s stop with the “Alex Gibbs can turn a Garbageman into an NFL Guard” talk. Not true.

heresy

I think the #1 selling jersey in Seattle right now says “Gibbs” on the back. He’s drowning in their love. I can’t figure out why they did not just make him the coach. After all, he taught Gretzky to pass, Jordan to shoot, Daly to drive, and A-Rod to swing. Discovered the vaccine for polio. Built the lunar lander. Tore down the Berlin Wall. Climbed Everest solo. Proved the existence of Bigfoot.

Getting lost in the arguement that he doesn't want high draft picks is useless

The appropriate discussion is what type of OL does he like. Smaller, quicker and smarter. The standard 330’ mauler is not what he wants at LT. He wants a LT at 310ish who is quick and smart. Typically those guys are not top end of the draft LTs. A guy like Charlie Brown at the end of the 1st will be the equivelant of the top of the 1st LT for another coach.

by stufr on Feb 13, 2010 8:31 AM EST up reply actions

I think all of the LTs last year [except for Andre Smith] were 310 to 300 pounds and athletic.

Guys like Jason Smith [#2], Eugene Monroe [#8], and Micheal Oher [should have been #11].

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 13, 2010 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

I agree 100%

Besides, typically in a ZBS system like Gibbs, RB’s are chosen in later rounds. They are probably less likely to go with an elite prospect at RB.

Talents that I covet:

Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Sam Bradford, Mike Iupati, Golden Tate, Earl Thomas, and Freddie Barnes

I agree. The Broncos could be one of the top dawgs in the NFL with a good QB.

by TheRealSlimShady on Feb 11, 2010 5:31 PM EST up reply actions

Hmmm...

I’d be concerned about Jimmy’s intangibles when matching him with the Broncos. I happen to like him as an NFL prospect, much in the same way I still like Jay Cutler’s potential, but he doesn’t seem like a fit in Denver off the field, so to speak…

good mock draft

Here is a nitpick.

At defensive tackle, if the Vikings re-sign Jimmy Kennedy (and I hope they do), they could be set. I think Phat Pat is coming back for one more year. While Odrick appears to be an excellent prospect, I think the Vikings should draft someone who will be a difference-maker right away, in 2010, and not be buried on the depth chart. Not to take anything away from Odrick. He looks like he’ll be good.

by medicineball on Feb 11, 2010 4:38 PM EST reply actions

I agree with mball, the vikes are very close and if Favre comes back they need to make a run this year.

They need someone who will contribute this year. Ideally at a current weak spot like Cornerback.

pat robinson

like antonie winfield he is a stout tackler and a heck of a cover corner check him out on youtube he jumps off the film

I like the Bowman pick for the Saints

However, I think Sean Witherspoon may be a slightly better pick. Both are playmaker LBs, but I like Witherspoon’s pass coverage a little better. Personally at this point I’d be happy with either. We’ll have to wait for combine and pro days for final analysis. Who Dat !!

by WhoDat_OH on Feb 11, 2010 4:39 PM EST reply actions

I like Haden. Fine pick.

I like seeing the Skins take an OT

Might be a bit high for Okung, but the Skins offense won’t matter if they keep ignoring the o-line.

Vikings

Odrick no definately not, grantite pat williams is getting older but Jimmy Kennedy and Fred Evans did a good job filling in at least for one more year, I like Taylor Mays he will never play safety in the NFL and for you to say he is going to the Cowboys would be like them drafting another Roy Williams and we all know how that worked out

Mays is listed at 6’3 230lbs that is the size of some LB’s in the NFL I believe that Mays is the next Brian Urlacher I know tough shoes to live up to but if we all remember Urlacher played safety in College and I think that turned out pretty well in all honesty

Next with Cedric Griffth blowing up his knee in the NFC championship game so the need for a corner is a must this is were i believe Patrick Robinson will come off the board and even if it looks like he might go early I could see them trading up to get him

And Finally with the attitude that Mckinney has shown in the past few weeks I believe that he could be draft day bait. I believe that the vikings would get Trent Williams as versatile as he was at Oklahoma he would be a stout piece on that already decent not great line

well lets hear it vikes fans what do u think

by mad_wacker39 on Feb 11, 2010 6:37 PM EST reply actions

Dez Bryant

You won’t get many Bills fans that will like that pick. I am probably more amiable to it then most.

Coach Gailey has shown that he could get production out of lower level talent.

Problem is that the Bills don’t have lower level talent they have no talent at the QB position.

No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.

by sireric on Feb 11, 2010 6:40 PM EST reply actions

let me speak for the "most" that you mention, eric

If the Bills pass on Jimmy Clausen for Dez Bryant I might punch a hole through the wall.

Trent Edwards is shell shocked, Ryan Fitzpatrick has moxie but is inaccurate and Brian Brohm has one game of experience.

Meanwhile, James Hardy is 6’6 and his third year and finally healthy, Lee Evans is set, and TO returning is still a possibility.

I can’t imagine a new regime with a new GM, new head coach and new faces at every coaching position will select a receiver over a polished, pro-ready QB.

Unless, the Bills acquire a QB through a trade. Still, passing on Clausen will be extremely difficult.

QB is the one position that I would be disappointed to see the Bills pass on. IMHO QB is the only position that I would put as a priority over any other. I am be no means enamored with any of the Bills existing “talent.” This team needs elite players and as of right now I’m not sure that they have any.

Can’t see Bengals taking a WR in the first (other than Dez Bryant). Not out of the realm of possibility but the fact they are flirting with TO, Matt Jones and Stallworth indicate that they want a vet WR with a speedster in the middle rounds.

Plus i don’t know if Benn is good enough to be a 1st round WR. He has way too many holes in his game to be value there. Workout numbers might get him into the first, but its not like hes going to run a 4.3 at 6’2" 230.

The way the Bengals are posturing indicates that they will try and take a defensive player. Sergio Kindle to play SAM, Dunlap at DE or Taylor Mays appears to be more likely. That said Brown could always get panicky and take a TE (but our offensive co-ordinator doesn’t know how to use one so it would be a waste).

Bengals look to have adopted the philosophy of taking young talent on D in the draft and plugging holes in our O in FA

by Sheffieldbengal on Feb 12, 2010 11:04 AM EST reply actions

Maybe it just means that they are desperate for a receiver.

What about Brandon Spikes?

by TheRealSlimShady on Feb 12, 2010 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

Rey Mauluaga is our future MLB so unless you rate Spikes as a great SAM at the next level (or Rey at SAM… which isn’t his best spot) i can’t see it happening. I don’t think Spikes has the range or athleticism required to cover TEs and rush the passer from the SAM position. Plus Marvin Lewis prefers converted college DEs to play SAM.

A passrusher seems the most likely player because Zimmer has said that he wants to take that to the next level (as we are going to have to play a lot of playoff passing teams)

by Sheffieldbengal on Feb 12, 2010 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

Really you are betting on Rey?

The guy is slow and coming back from a broken leg. I really hope for the Bengals sake you are kidding. That guy is a stiff. There is a reason he fell in to the 2nd and his teammate went earlier. It is called talent, or in his case a lack there of.

by Flounder69 on Feb 13, 2010 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

Yawn

He fell to the second beause MLBs aren’t valued as much as other positions and he likes the beer too much. He doesn’t lack talent at all and if you think so you evidently didn;t watch much of his play this season like I did. Also the part of his ankle he broke didn’t require surgery and isn’t going to affect him much after a whole offseason – well according to people with, you know, medical degrees.

The guy is fast enough for MLB in a traditional 4-3 but not SAM. He is also over aggressive at the mo so makes himself look worse because he takes a rookie angle on the ball carrier. When Rey was in the whole run-D was on another level. Oh and by your logic all players who fall to the 2nd and beyond don’t have talent… nice logic.

by Sheffieldbengal on Feb 13, 2010 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

Oh and how fast is Ray Lewis… and how fast was he when he was the MLB in Lewis’s 4-3? Well, i’ll answer he wasn’t… at all.

LOL

Clearly you do not follow the Bills. Bet your bottom dollar that the Bills will NOT be taking Dez Bryant

I would take your prediction for Arizona more seriously if you could spell Leinarts name correctly.

Seriously, is Leinhart or Lionheart some nickname that I haven’t heard of?

The Cardinals are going with the Defense in the first round, either a Linebacker or a Defensive Tackle.

We won’t take him.. The line is a pressing need.
