Cincinnati Bengals team needs

The Cincinnati Bengals had a very successful season, which ended with an early playoff exit. Cedric Benson and the health of Carson Palmer helped lead the surge. If the Bengals want to stay atop the difficult AFC North division they are going to need fill some needs.

1. Wide Receiver

- Chad Ochocinco is slowing down, Laveranues Coles isn’t has consistent has he once was, and I feel the coaches have lost confidence in Andre Caldwell (fumbles). Finding another weapon for Carson Palmer will help threaten the strong defenses within the AFC North. Where the Bengals select in the first round is a stretch for most of the wide receivers in this draft.

2. Tight End

- JP Foschi and Daniel Coats showed last season they do not threaten a defense. Chase Coffman’s injury limited the look the Bengals were able to get on him. Even if Coffman heals and is productive this position needs addressing. Most teams have two good tight ends and right now it’s unknown if the Bengals have one. They could look at Aaron Hernandez and Jermaine Gresham in round 1.

3. Safety

- Roy Williams is what was he is and that’s a limited coverage safety. Chris Crocker and Chinedum Ndukwe are promising young players but more depth and talent needs to be added to this position. It’s possible that Taylor Mays is around when they pick in the first round but I see them avoiding him because he has stiff hips like Roy Williams.

Ochocinco did pretty well considering he was double and triple covered on most plays. Plus in the latter half of the season he had a leg injury (it kept on swelling and made his cuts less effective). I mean he did have over 1000 yards and 9 TDs with an average of 14.5yds per catch (on a run-first and second team)

You have to take into account that the Bengals O co-ordinator has never used TEs well. Like Martz they are (non-?)glorified OTs. Will a young TE be able to survive in that system? You could give us any number of TEs and they’d look unimpressive in our system. Mike Brown does want a pass-catcher TE but what he wants to see and how the offence is run are two different things. It’ll be interesting to see what happens but the smart money is on a TE who can block in the mid- later part of the draft and a vet TE.

The main problem is that our WRs weren’t doing their job – we had to rely on unprepared rookies, young WRs and struggling vets (Coles). Plus Carson was jumpy and rusty and relied on Ocho to make silly catches to survive.

Roy Williams problems weren’t coverage based (he thrives under Zimmers’ system which uses him as practically a LB), they are injury based. The whole D looked better when he was in because we killed the run and he lined everyone up correctly. His arm injury put him in IR again and it may be the end of his career. Safety is a big need and the Bengals have been seen chatting-up Larry Asante from Nebraska and Chris Cook from Virginia so they seem to eb chasing both a FS and SS… though it seems that the 3rd and 4th rounds will be used for that position.

The smoke signals comming out of the Bengals camp at the mo are indicating that they are attempting to solve the Offensive holes in FA (Matt Jones, TO, Stallworth etc) so they can take BPA on defence (or the o-line)

New info

I have just been told (from someone who works for the Bengals) that Mike Brown is reportedly really high on Jermaine Gresham and the scouting department (ie the coaches) have been sniffing around trying to get as much info about him as possible (injury and otherwise).

I always knew Brown wanted a athletic TE but our O co-ordinator doesn’t and can’t use one… interesting news

Any WR besides Dez Bryant is a reach at # 21?

I thought that LaFell and Damian Williams were both rated as first round prospects?

If they wait until the second round they would be looking at WRs like Jeremy Williams, Andre Roberts, Jordan Shipley, Mardy Gilyard, or hope that one of Lafell, Tate, Benn, or Damian W. falls. Yeah, that might not be a bad strategy.
The best defender at # 21 might be Earl Thomas, Sean Weatherspoon, Dan Williams, Carlos Dunlap, Brandon Graham, Everson Griffen, Terrance Cody [too early], or someone like that.

Bengals need a WR can contribute on day one and i think the holes in LaFell, Tate, Benn and Williams games make them a questionable pick – especially when you take into account the difficulty that WRs have in making an impact in their first year.

That said it’s always possible that Brown falls in love with one of those WRs after the combine (money on Williams or LaFell)… i just don’t see any of them as a can’t miss WR who you would take over better defensive talent.

I think the Bengals (at the moment) are planning to go BPA defence (unless Bryant is around) in the 1st and then go BPA in the 2nd hoping that a playmaker WR is around, or a high-value S is there.

Signing Matt Jones just reaffirms the smoke signals i’ve been reading from the Bengals FO and mouth-peice Geoff Hobson (plus the type of prospects their small scouting department and coaches are looking at) that they want FA offensive talent.

First round rookie receivers (other than DHB) did well

green in regards to route running. Love his potential and run-blocking but we are not in the position to take project players in the first round. He will have to be taught how to run routes and a full route-tree… something we can’t really get away with. Bengals are a solid team… but we could have had a 13-3 or 8-8 record last year very easily as we are always still in games… but we also let teams get a shot at winning

are they about to fill their WR need in FA?

they are interested in Matt Jones and Dante Stallworth

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters

Oh

and Chris Crocker isn’t young (in football years) he’s 29.

and he doesnt resemble a promising player, he blows.

Anyways I think the Bengals should target either a WR or a TE

Matt "Moonshine" Jones is now signed

and they will sign TO in March. I can’t see them going WR early now…

Honestly, the best way to figure out the Bengals board is to look up the player with the most arrests or most publicity.

Carlos Dunlap. Or even Brandon Spikes because of the whole “eye gouging” thing.

get it right...

Bengals don’t sign or draft players because they are criminals… they sign or draft players despite their criminal past/red flags.

Go on talent and ignore red flags… and that is the Bengals BPA system.

Bengals strategy

They are going after players that already have their own criminal defense attorneys. Cuts down on the team’s costs.

Tight end

Jermaine Gresham is a popular choice of mock drafts for the Bengals’ first pick. There is weapon at tight end right now, and Gresham looks like a great player.

For the 2nd round, I think the Bengals would take Dan LeFevour if he falls that far. Right now Carson Palmer is not really facing any pressure from beneath him on the depth chart, and he had a very down 2009.

That would still leave safety. Adam “Pacman” Jones would be a nickel cornerback if he is signed.
