Attention draft sites: Stop stealing our work

It has come to my attention that some sites have been stealing the content from here at Mocking the Draft. We put a lot of work into our very in-depth scouting reports. It is safe to say that you won't find scouting reports this detailed and free anywhere else.

As some of you know, we are doing a scouting report share this season with newerascouting.com, which is a site I previously helped run. So if you're taking content from here, you're taking content from there. This is not cool.

Although the works at our sites are free, it is not in the public domain. If sites continue to do this, there will be no hesitation to turn it into a legal matter. It does not matter if you're posting our work on your site or if a message board user is re-posting content in your message board. You will be held culpable.

If you are still too dumb to understand what I am saying, you can also find plenty about intellectual property law online.

If you are questioning yourself about this, you are probably doing something wrong. You should probably stop.

Readers: If you happen to notice someone running our content on another site, you can email me. You can also expose these pathetic fools in the comments here.

Hmmmm

Is it illegal to post links of this site if someone wants to know about the draft?

That’s perfectly fine, so long as the other site doesn’t care.

Same question as above

Are we allowed to post a link to your scouting reports? I mean in the following way:

Joe Schmoe the safety out of The University of John Madden could be a great fit for us in the first round, he fits our biggest need and will probably be the BPA. From what I’ve gathered he has great instincts in defending the pass, and does a good job laying players out. I’d do the Starburst “Little Lad” Dance if he fell to us at 18th.

For more information here’s a scouting report from mocking the draft: link

That’s what I had in mind for any of my future draft posts.

BTSC Obituaries

OldManSteeler, ominously died two days before Superbowl 123 where the Ravens are set to attempt their 7th superbowl win, facing the Detroit Lions on Sunday. He was 86. His last words are believed to be "MALOR CAN SUCK IT!!!". Like friends and family, we can only guess what this could mean.

Wouldn't that be okay if you gave credit with a link?

I don’t do mocks but I find them helpful for water cooler talk at work… :0

I'll admit

In my mock drafts over at Mile High Report, I provide my own scouting report and for another opinion I have used some of the reports provided by this site. That being said, any time I have ever done that I have said, “Here is a scouting report from Mocking The Draft on so-and-so.” Then I place the scouting report in quotations and Italicise everything. I hope that’s fine, but I have no problem not including that information if it’s not.

by Sayre Bedinger on Feb 14, 2010 3:29 PM EST reply actions

Hmmm...

You could always link to the site rather than quoting the content; ideally, I think maybe quoting a relevant excerpt, atributing it properly and then linking to the rest would be best. That’s just me, though, so we’ll see what Dan has to say…

"A player who conjugates a verb in the first person singular cannot be part of the squad, he has to conjugate the verb in the first person plural. We. We want to conquer. We are going to conquer. Using the word 'I' when you're in a group makes things complicated." ~ Wanderley Luxemburgo, 1999

I don’t care if folks from the SB Nation platform do that. It’s these other sites that just take the stuff and not cite it and claim it as their own.

Based on my understanding of fair use

Your method should be fine (quote and cite a portion of a work, in the context of large piece of work), but a link would help be helpful. There is no ban on quoting and citing a copyrighted work in the production of a new work, as long as it is not quoted entirely without an attribution for the sole purpose of reproduction of the original work.

by ninjasocks on Feb 14, 2010 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

To clarify

You guys don’t mind somebody quoting your work and then linking it/citing it, right? Are there people that are copying entire articles and re-posting as their own?

That is correct.

Why don’t you use some of your ninja skills and break some legs ? :)

I hate to be the one to break it you

But I’m not a ninja. And I don’t have any ninja skills.

I took this handle because I once wore flip flops over socks (it was cold in the house and I had to step out quickly to check the barbecue) and I thought “Hey, these look like those socks that ninjas wear.” Its pretty lame, but it is what it is.

But if I did have superpowers, I’d definitely do something about things (like use super speed to write angry letters).

I am from Buffalo Rumblings

And I have been over here as well for about 6 months. I must say that of all the draft sites I go to, this is by far the best run and most informative site on thge web. I know that others from BR agree. I will link this article over there so if anyone sees anything, we can let you know.

Ugh

We’re just THAT good, Danny.

I’ve ran a draft site for 10 years now, and unfortunately this is just part of the BS you put up with.

If you cite either website as a reference, you’re fine. What Dan means is do NOT post the scouting reports and try to pass them off as your own original work.

by newerascouting on Feb 14, 2010 5:46 PM EST reply actions

Yes, you all are THAT good. Newerascouting and mockingthedraft are IMO the best scouting sites AND are free, which is pretty awesome.

by TheRealSlimShady on Feb 14, 2010 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

Some harsh stuff

But glad you came out and told these assholes to stop. Funny part is, I bet not one of these guys contacted you to find out if it was alright to post your stuff, which it wouldn’t have been anyway.

Got any links to these sites where they did this? I would like to check it out.

by RiG on Feb 14, 2010 8:24 PM EST reply actions

Yeah

Im pretty sure dan just wants to make sure people get credit for their work. Id guess he wouldnt care if you quoted a piece of his scouting report and gave them credit. If these people are copying and pasting stuff on to their site and A) charging people to see it B) Advertising within the page and C) Not giving credit for work, Then they are breaking the law. Anyone who sees it should bring it to Dan’s attention. Think about it like this, You do a mock draft on MTD and someone steals it word for word and posts it with abunch of advertisments they are making money off. Shouldnt you get a serious cut of the profit? Shouldnt you get credit? Shouldnt there be a writeen agrement for this site to do this? The anwser is yes. Anything else is fraudulent and should be exposed.

by darwithabar on Feb 14, 2010 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

That’s right. It bugs me when someone just takes the whole thing.

I encourage people to take a piece of it and link back. That’s kind of why the “Final word” section is in there. To see a perfect example of what I mean, check out our Giants blog.
