Buffalo Bills team needs

Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills are coming off another tough season that resulted in a coaching change. The Bills need to make a lot of decisions and those decisions will impact their draft strategy. Will they pursue a veteran quarterback? Is the defense switching to a 3-4 scheme? Is the T.O. show continuing for another season? The Bills have a lot of holes to fill here are their top 3.

1. Offensive Tackle

- Trading Jason Peters has left a huge hole along the offensive line that must be addressed. I have the tackle position ahead of quarterback because young quarterbacks need protection. Demetrius Bell has shown promise but he maybe better suited for the right side. First round targets for the Bills could include Russell Okung, Anthony Davis, and Brian Bulaga.

2. Quarterback

- The trio of Brian Brohm, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Trent Edwards is not the long term solution at the quarterback position. New coach Chan Gailey needs to assess what talent he has and what talent is available and get a direction. There have been a lot of rumors about the Bills pursuing Michael Vick or possibly Gailey’s old project Tyler Thigpen. As far as the draft is concerned both Jimmy Clausen and Sam Bradford may be available but it’s highly unlikely. Later round options are Colt McCoy and Dan LeFevour.

3. Linebacker

- Staff changes have many thinking that the Bills will be switching their defensive scheme to a 3-4. This change will require personal to fit the scheme. One of the bigger needs might be filling the linebacker spots. Paul Posluszny is the current middle linebacker but in the 3-4 scheme another inside linebacker will be needed. Also who is going to fill the pass rushing outside linebacker spots? Aaron Maybin could fill one and maybe they draft another. Rolando McClain might be available at pick #9 and someone like Jerry Hughes in the second round.

I don't see McClain as a fit

Unless the Bills get rid of Posluszny. The new DC, George Edwards, wants to run a straight, Bullough-Fairbanks 3-4. Posluszny is a decent-to-good fit at the Will ILB.

The Mike ILB is usually manned by guys that excel in taking on blocks and letting the Will ILB flow to the football. Guys like Jeff Ulbrich and Matt Wilhelm. If Buffalo takes McClain and plays him at Mike ILB it would be somewhat of a waste of his talents.

LB is a need, but how it makes the list ahead of NT is beyond me.

You could also get away with putting “every position” here.

I’d rate it QB, OT and NT as our top 3. We have severe depth issues at LB and TE, and we can’t get enough linemen – both sides of the ball – and pass rushers.

Yeah I was just going to post NT as a bigger need than LB, too.

Completely agree about NT

I think the Bills should go best player available regardless of need; We all know lack of overall talent on this team is the biggest issue.

You and I don’t agree often but on this we are in complete agreement. I think they should look for a QB to start his development, but if they can’t find one that they like at the right spot, then they should move on. Don’t force it and reach leaving a much better player on the board.

Not a fan of trading up as there are so many holes to fill on this team.

It is ridiculously unlikely that the Bills will trade up.

I would trade up for Bradford in a heartbeat with KC

you guys can still get your LT at 9 and get an extra pick and we get our franchise QB.

What do the Bills think about Brian Brohm?

Scientific research has proven that you lose exactly 5.37 billion brain cells every time you listen to Todd McShay.

Hard to tell what the coaches think. He was brought in by the old regime. Personally, I haven’t seen enough of him to guarantee him a spot on the training camp roster.

by MattRichWarren on Feb 17, 2010 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

Loved him in college

I do not think he has been given a chance in thge pros yet. I could see him becoming a very good QB in this league, but I think his biggest challenge is his own confidence.

by The Irishman on Feb 17, 2010 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

It depends on who you ask. Some are willing to hand the reins of the team over to him based on nothing but the fact that he was once highly touted and was a second round pick. Others, like myself, consider him to be worthy of an invite to camp so the team can give him a look, but are not willing to commit to him much more then that.

haha

Well if he doesnt get drafted, then I guess it is already a lock. If he does get drafted, even if its in the 7th round, somoene is expecting something out of him, even if its special teams. lol. So, no its not. but good one.
