Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

This is from Draft Nasty, the site of former NFL player Corey Chavous. He of NFL Network Senior Bowl coverage and ESPN draft coverage several years ago.

Example: With the seventh pick, Cleveland takes Fresno State running back Ryan Matthews. Did I mention that it's the seventh pick of the first round? Yikes.

3 CB’s taken before Haden? Briscoe the 2nd WR taken to the Ravens? A 3rd grader put this together.

Wow...

Corey Chavous must be a closet Colts fan.

Joe Haden to the Colts?

..sure, why not?

I CAN see Ryan Matthews making a leap up the boards. But in today’s day, unless a RB is Adrian Peterson, you ain’t going that high. Matthews isn’t Knowshown Moreno either.

Worst? No it's not. It might be the best

We don’t know yet how all these draft picks will end up. Maybe Ryan Mathews really is the seventh best talent in the draft. Maybe Joe Haden really will not be that great in the pros.

We don’t know.

Chavous and his company Draft Nasty actually go out and scout college games and practices. They have been doing that for a long time. They know what they are talking about.

Are there some mistakes here and there? Yes, maybe. At least it’s different though.

We don’t all have to be the same.

Completely unprofessional imo to trash someone else’s mock just because they judge and predict players differently. How many people mocked Darious H-B being taken by the Raiders last year? The fact that it goes agaisnt the commonly accepted order will probably make it MORE accurate then anything here come draft time.

Me.

As someone who mocked DHB to the Raiders, this pick has too many curveballs for my taste…

oh. me too. I can always spot a raider pick a mile away, but mike mitchell still surprised me.

back in the russell draft, many did think that oakland would take calvin johnson. i was like “no, they take the guy who can throw 60 yards from his knees”. plus I also completely saw russell coming as a bust. you even put him on a good team and he is a crap player.

Agreed, maybe some of these picks are foolish and against the grain, but I have a low opinion of Mel Kiper Jr. (He went to my school’s rival, plus he isn’t that good) and you know there will be always be a bunch of head scratchers. I will say that if Joe Haden fell to my Steelers I would love to see them pick him up.

A lot of these I would bet THOUSANDS of dollars on not happening (and I don’t HAVE thousands of dollars).

1. ryan matthews is not even going in the first. I like him as a player but he will just get passed over because of the competition.

2. Dez bryant WILL NOT be picked by scott pioli. anyone who thinks that is a complete numbskull that has not payed attention to football this decade. pioli will go after need before BPA. they have so many needs before WR…also, when was the last time a team pioli was managing drafed a WR in the first round? how about an offensive player not on the line, in the first?

by bross09 on Feb 20, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

Seriously?!

You don’t mock drafts to predict future returns: you do so to predict the real thing. This mock in no way feels like that. Look, you don’t have to be part of the herd, churning out homogenous mocks all the time, but this one has some truly off-the-wall things. Here are some that I’d be thrilled to wager if anyone were crazy enough to take the flipside: Joe Haden will go before Ryan Matthews and every other CB in the draft, more than one QB will be drafted in the first round… actually, my comp is freaking out, so I can’t view the link, but you get the point. This effort gets a D from me…

truly off the wall?

The real draft will be that way, too.

That said, I hear what you are saying. Mock drafts are useful to figure out what some other team will do so you can trade up or down to get a player you want. The Draft Nasty mock does not appear to do that by any stretch.

Yet, it’s fun to put a GM hat on and consider what a team should do. That’s what I have done in my mock drafts. I think that is what Draft Nasty is doing, too, although I can’t be sure.

by medicineball on Feb 20, 2010 9:44 AM EST up reply actions

some of its possible, its not 100% terrible.

But Ryan Matthews? Exactly, how is it not possible he ain’t there in round 2? Amari Spievey and Pat Robinson?

Even if Joe Haden is 5"9…Speiver and Robinson were not better college players then Haden.

Spikes to the Eagles? Unless Spikes really is a SLB…Stewart Bradley is a damn good MLB and they ain’t drafting a MLB.

Dezmon Briscoe?

by FreeBradshaw on Feb 20, 2010 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

I totally agree…

why would the browns draft a RB in the first 2 rounds anyways…this guy scouting obviously didn’t watch pro football much this year.

I totally agree on speivey and robinson. how can you draft a CB that high that has ONE interception in 2 seasons. the only excuse is if he had ridiculous man cover skills and instincts, which he doesn’t. Speivey is a year away from being a solid prospect…he should have stayed…

I totally agree on spikes. My opinion is they WILL take a pass rusher…definitely not a Linebacker.

I was confused about briscoe too. obviously chavous only looked at stats and never watched briscoe.

by bross09 on Feb 20, 2010 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

this is off the wall to the point where it feels like Al Davis is drafting for every single team.

by bross09 on Feb 20, 2010 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

Forgot to finish:

Patrick robinson should not go that high. chavous obviously likes the player so he is being very nice by saying he “had an uneven senior bowl performance”…that is being WAY to kind. he got beat several times in coverage badly. he has had an uneven last 2 seasons…no matter how well you can cover (and he is definitely not the best) one interception in 2 seasons is pretty bad. he had 6 his sophmore year and none this year.

Sean Witherspoon: now this is just about what they need. their linebackers are solid but they desperately need a safety. if earl thomas is there they will most likely take him

Speivey: this is what a diehard hawkeye fan wrote on this site about him “As an Iowa fan, I can tell you all that this kid is at least one more year of college away from being ready to take on the NFL. He’s only got two years of college under his belt. His upside is tremendous, but his experience and lack of dominance has to be concerning. 4th round pick, in my opinion.” he also has made much more of an impact so far on special teams and not as much on D.

Spikes: so a team that needs a strong side pass rusher, and has a spectacular linebacking corps goes out and gets…a linebacker??? this is a team with a good secondary but they only finished 17th in passing yards allowed…this is because they do not get enough of a pass rush. i am not diminishing trent cole at all. he is a monster, but you need another edge rusher too.

Dezmon Briscoe: this is another example of just BAD scouting. he was probably looking at WR numbers and said, “ooh, this guy is good”. briscoe also plays in a weird spread(ish) offense that inflates receivers stats. same reason danario alexander gets passed over…he was in a fluky offense that inflated stats.

I watched briscoe play. he has below average straight line speed. he survived b/c of route timing and a weird offense. he almost never beat a CB and got separation, and the Big 12 Passing Ds aren’t even that great. he is probably the worst route runner in the draft too. he has never played in a pro style offense and benefits from a lot of routes where he can break tackles in the open field. that is really the only thing he is good at. breaking tackles and leaping.

oh, and he has them passing on the best route runner in the draft (damian williams) for arguably the worst…

while not every pick is a miss, there are some misses of epic proportions. plus in many cases, he completely whiffs on team needs too and has them taking picks that don’t make sense…

like the ryan matthews pick. a team that ranked 29th in passing yards, 28th in rushing yards (both on defense) and 32nd in offensive passing yards and 8th in offensive rushing…they take a running back that high??? this is the dumbest thing I have ever seen. the browns need so many more things before a running back, like Defensive back (29th in passing D but top 10 at getting to the QB), D-Line, Receiver, Tight end, Right side of O-Line, QB possibly. and Inside linebacker…

by bross09 on Feb 20, 2010 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that the 1st is way too early for Spievey

but as someone who’s watched every game of his career I think the hawk fan you’re quoting is overly harsh. He was avoided this past year by opposing offenses. I think he would have been better served by another year in college, but I think he could step right into the nickel for a cover-2 team. Other schemes I’d be much less certain of.

I think he’s a 3rd round pick, maybe up to the late 2nd, and only slips the the 4th with a poor combine.

by shake n bake on Feb 20, 2010 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

that is more analysis than he gave so I will go with your opinon. I do watch some big ten football but I did not see a ton of him. from what I saw though he did not look like a first rounder though.

this might be wrong, but

When I see Haden on film or in photographs, he looks like he is 5’7. Yet, he is listed at 5’11. While I have Haden going high on my mock drafts, I want to see his height listing from the Combine.

by medicineball on Feb 19, 2010 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

I agree I don’t think he measures at 5’11. I think he’ll be 5’9 or around there.

maybe 5’10’’…but CBs have survived in the NFL at that height…he also has amazing leaping skills.

by bross09 on Feb 20, 2010 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

you can argue about height all you want but
A) he has elite physical skills. elite speed, great hips, etc.
B) He is probably the best jumper in the draft. whatever his height was, it never caused him much problems.
C) he might have the best hands out of all the D-Backs.
D) He is one of the best (if not the best) tacklers as a Cornerback. he loves dishing out punishing hits and is maybe the best run stopping CB
E) Best ball skills as a CB and maybe as good as Berry. great at anticipating routes and throws and timing them right.
F) he has a ridiculous level of production. he still has lots of upside but he makes a ridiculous number of plays. he is all over the place and makes plays everywhere.
G) this is an overlooked area but he might be the best blitzing CB in the draft (3 Sacks, 3 QB hurries).

Is this directed towards me?

slightly. I am just saying that you can argue size all you want but he is still a great prospect.

it was more towards the other guy but mainly to the talk of height in general.

For those who frequent the site, they know that Ryan Mattews is just a secret code for Tebow.

This mock may look crazy, but that is just because it is a coded prophecy about how Tebow stops a giant Tsunami from destroying the world in 2012.

by Phantaskippy on Feb 20, 2010 11:07 AM EST reply actions

I am not going to bash...it is obviously what he is doing!

This year, a lot was said about Revis and other CBs – so this mock has taken that into consideration. The “mocker” feels that many teams will be looking for the next Shutdown CB.

Also, two years ago, the rookie QBs (Ryan and Flacco) played great. Last year, the rookies (Sanchez and Stafford) were mediocre at best (and what about Freeman?). He suspects teams to go high on OTs and Defense to take pressure off of this year’s group of QBs (who are probably no where near the talent of Ryan, Flacco, Sanchez, and Stafford).

It seems that he was more concerned with team need and BPA.

Do I agree with all his picks? No, but it’s his mock!
