Could the Chiefs Draft Jimmy "Gavone" Clausen?

I read something interested from Mel Kiper. He pretty much came up with a situation where the Chiefs might draft Jimmy Clausen if he grades out higher than  O Kung. Personally, I don't think the best OT in the draft will even be available at 5. Anyways, I just wanted to ask you guys if you could see Weis getting in Pioli's ear just enough to pick Clausen. Personally, I doubt it happens but I wouldn't necessarily hate it. It would suck only because we couldn't get Gabbert next year (lol). Anyways, More after the Jump......

Star-divide

Posistives

Weis knows Clausen's game and likes the kid. He knows if he is worth the 5th pick better than any of us. He played in a pro style offense and basically has the experience of a senior. He has a very good INT-TD ratio and a very good completion percentage. He also doesn't lake fire, and his teammates consider him a leader. He was undefeated in high school which is also impressive when you think about it. Also, maybe TRSS has been selling him correctly the whole time. Also, There are questions to whether Cassel is a franchise QB. If you look at the last 6 or 7 SB winners. They all had franchise QBs and good safeties.

Negatives

He has character concerns but nothing serious. Even though his team was stack with talent, he couldn't get it done in college. Alot of scouts question how well his game will transition to the NFL. Another negative is the Chiefs already gave up a 2nd round pick last year for Matt Cassel.

Matt Cassel

Matt Cassel had a below average year when you compare it to the year he had with the Patriots. He had trouble getting rid of the ball and took alot of sacks. However, he did show promise and he is still relatively young. Would Clausen be an upgrade? I dont know. However, some people might say Matt Cassel's contract would stop us from taking Clausen which isn't necessarily true. Matt Cassel got 28 million guaranteed and he will receive that his first two seasons. So, Jimmy Clausen could sit for a year and the Chiefs could basically cut Cassel without penalty after this season if he didn't play well. If he did play well, he could be traded. There are also question of whether the Chiefs would attempt to trade Cassel is they did take Clausen, which may happen. But I dont see a team giving up fair value for a starting QB. Maybe STL or DEN. If he is traded it would raise alot of questions to Pioli's indecisiveness.

Final Verdict

I dont know how I would feel if the Chiefs took Clausen but I bet Weis is pushing for it. Vote in the poll below. Let me know in the comments what you think about it. Try to stay open minded and rational.

My thought, as a Patriots fan....

…is that Cassel was thrown from the King’s Castle in New England into the fires of Kansas City. The tools he had at New England were exponentially greater than what he has in Kansas- from wide receivers, to offensive line, to tight ends, to, arguably, running backs.

Instead of focusing on replacing Cassel, I think you still need to work on the tools around him. Even if Cassel shows up as “not the guy” down the road, at least you’d have a foundation for the next potential “guy”. Work on weapons. He’ll do better.

This

Build around Cassel, and he can be a solid guy.

Yup

As an outsider, this is how I see it as well.

Whoa Whoa Whoa

Two things, The Chiefs arent in Kansas, Kansas Sucks. They are in Mizzouri. Also, While I agree the WR, OL, and TE were all better in NE, Jamal Charles is better than any RB on NE’s roster. I agree he could be better with time as well though.

OI!

Watch it man, both parents were born and bred in Kansas!

;)

Only messing with you, slightly. Good luck to the Tigers Saturday, they’re going to need it if they want to beat the Cats! :)

way too much invested in Cassel. you can’t pay 2 franchise quarterbacks at a time, even if one isn’t actually a franchise quarterback.

by hellaninersfan on Feb 24, 2010 2:31 AM EST reply actions

Well

Cassel’s contract is top heavey. He is owe 14 mil next season and I beleive they could actually save 8 mil by cutting him after next season. So essentially, you wouldnt be stuck in two franchise QB contracts.

by darwithabar on Feb 25, 2010 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

Wow. You want to bail on Cassel already?

If you want to get rid of/replace Cassel, you should also be looking at dumping the genius that brought him to KC and gave him that huge contract. Right?

Also, you really think that Weis is pushing to draft Clausen? In effect he would be saying that obtaining Cassel was a mistake and the guy that did it, his boss by the way, made a huge mistake.

I also would like to say that I realize this is not the feeling of most [any?] Chief fans. Well, let’s wait until the poll results are in.

I dont want Clausen, Ask TRSS, I dont even think he is that good

You should read the post all the way before commenting though. Also, I like Cassel, Ive stuck up for him several times.

Trade Cassell?

If they draft Clausen, they might as well trade Cassell right after making that pick. Buffalo?

by medicineball on Feb 24, 2010 9:17 AM EST reply actions

trade cassell to denver!!

I hear their coach likes him alot
LOL

by durst on Feb 24, 2010 9:24 AM EST reply actions

Wait a year.

If Cassel struggles again, then start to look towards the Jake Lockers or Ryan Mallets. This was a very turbulant year in Chief land with the OC essentially being fired 12 minutes before the opening kickoff, LJ running like my Grandmama, OLine struggles and inconcistant WR play. If Cassel can’t excel with Charlie Weis, a rebuilt OLine and 16 games of Jamaal Charles, then I say its time to go another route. 16 games is too early evaluate whether or not Cassel is the QBOTF.

I still think Cassel is good.

I don't think so

Midway through the season a lot of Chiefs fans were already wanting to replace Cassel (which I think was partially due to the fact a lot of them still thought Thigpen should’ve been the Chiefs QB), but that has cooled down almost completely.

When Cassel gets a season or two with a fully functioning O-line and receivers that catch passes I think he will be a solid starter.
