Jaguars targeting trade, talent on defense
The latest trade talk story making the rounds is about Jacksonville wanting to trade out of its pick – whether that ends up being 10 or 11.
Jacksonville wants to acquire more picks after trading this year's second rounder to select cornerback Derek Cox.
But the most interesting part of this story is being buried. It is general manager Gene Smith saying this:
"I hope we can match best available player with some areas on defense where we need improvement. There’s a good likelihood we might be able to do that."
Everyone figures Jacksonville to take Georgia Tech defensive end Derrick Morgan. He would help improve the league's worst pass rush. But there's no guarantee he'll be available. What if some team jumps ahead of Jacksonville to take Morgan?
If you assume Morgan is gone, perhaps to Seattle with the sixth pick, what then? Jason Pierre-Paul is a possibility, but the Jaguars may not be able to take a risk on a boom or bust player. So unless Jacksonville can manage a trade down, they may have to settle on someone.

I think if a player like McClain
is still in ; well he can be a pick. I hope we can trade down; but I see less possibility then last year!

I also think Brian Price is a possibility
The DT position is one that needs to be addressed sometime in the near future and Price could sure up that position. With Knighton and Price in the middle, the Jaguars would have a fearsome pair for years to come.
Also Price is a pass rushing specialist and could help provide a pass rush from the middle of the line. I don’t necessarily believe that a pass rush has to be found in the early rounds. Take a look at the sack leaders of this last year and you can see that. I trust Gene Smith to find a pass rusher in the later rounds. One guy I’ve been told about on BCC that intrigues me is Junior Galette.

For Jacksonville, watching the combine is big
There will be a good number of players teams could be looking at which would warrant discussions with the Jaguars for the 10\11 pick. If C.J. Spiller shows up big at the combine his value becomes gold. If Bradford and Clausen perform high as well then both of them should go top 10 freeing up more players at the Jags spot. I see their draft position as the key trade position for teams wanting to move up.
The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall.

Trade even further down
…get a pass rusher like Sean Witherspoon, Brandon Graham, or Sergio Kindle…and rack up a good amount of picks.
+1
Thank you. There are some nice pass rushers in the mid to late first, plus we could get our second rounder back.

This all sounds like a bad joke.
One of the best draft classes in a long time and it sounds like no one wants to pick anyone early because someone just as good can be picked up later? Baloney.
As with every draft class some prospects will appear to be lower risk/higher reward types than other players. As every year, some of those “elite” prospects will not deliver on their perceived potential, and others will. It is a crap shoot people, dropping down to pick more players [if you can find a partner] is as much of a risk as drafting earlier.
This is true
But Jacksonville only has 5 picks (1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, & 6th).
So using your theory they have less of a chance to get a good player with less picks.
The more picks they have the better the chances of finding some good players.
Of course if the picks are late then the odds really go down.
Lets say for example, Minnesota wanted to trade up to #10. They may offer their #30, #62 and Ray Edwards. That would be a good deal for the Jaguars. They fill a need and get an extra pick. Now why would the Vikings do this? They need a franchise QB and if Bradford or Clausen is there they may do it.
This is just one scenario.
It is true that every draft pick is a gamble but if you do not gamble you will not be rewarded.
To clarify; The early guys may be a much higher reward than the four or five journeymen you pick up.
Do you want one HOF/All Pro or will you be satisfied with two starters and two back ups and a practice squadder? I think it is accurate to say that your chances of getting an elite player decrease as you move away from the top of the draft. Right? Whether it makes sense to trade or pick totally depends on the players available at the time of the pick, how the team feels about them, and the offer in hand.
I just don’t think it is a given that it is better to trade down in nearly every case. In that case, why would anyone trade up?
This is all guess work anyways.
Your Bologna is because people like 2 slices instead of one.
If its a deep draft…one solid to elite player is probably not as good for your team as 2 solid to very good players.
This is why trading back is better….you get more on the sandwich.

I'll take one slice of thick Prime Rib over three slices of Olive Loaf anyday! LOL
It’s not just about empty calories FB.
That would be great
If the top of the draft class was guaranteed Prime Rib and the bottom was guaranteed Olive Loaf.
It’s like this for me. Would you take one 75% shot at getting a “Prime Rib” or three 40% shots? You can argue about the percentages, they’re just off the top of my head.

Yep
I don’t think anyone has Morgan pencilled in as a future all-pro. Why not trade back and take more stabs at it, like you said.

was just using your 'Bologna" reference
Me?
I haven’t had a good slice of Prime Rib in years.
…I’d have more then a few good Porterhouses in a row tho.
Give me a whole bunch of porterhouses then one Prime Rib anyday.
…cuz I’ve had the nastiest piles of crap called prime rib before…even if it is the “best cut of meat”.

If both DTs and QBs are gone,
I’d love for the Seahawks to trade with the Jaguars, even if it just netted us a 4th rounder.
Dream Draft: Clausen, Brown (#24), Houston, McKnight, Mike Williams, Black, McManis, DTN.
You're hoping the Jaguars will trade up?
That’s not going to happen.

And even if they did
It wouldn’t just net you a fourth. Having only five picks, that thought scares me.

would Darnell Dockett and our second round pick do the trick?
Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Would for me anyway. Throw in a few later round picks though.

Earl Thomas
The Jaguars should just target Earl Thomas in the first round. He will be an excellent free safety. He might also be converted into a shutdown cornerback. Either way, he is likely to be a bluechip player. He fits an area of need and he could very well be the best player available when the Jags draft.
The book is still being written about Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves, and with better pass coverage, the pass rush will be more effective.
I'm in the minority
But I haven’t given up on Harvey as a pass-rusher.
