Demaryius Thomas NFL Draft scouting report

Demaryius Thomas
6'3, 230 pounds | Wide receiver | Georgia Tech

Acceleration/Burst/Quickness: Has long, powerful strides that can get him to top speed in a blink. Does not look explosive because of his long strides but he can get going with the best of them. Lacks short area quickness, struggles when he has to shorten his strides.

Agility/Leaping Ability: Well balanced athlete with strong hips. Does not make the last second short area movement to avoid hits however. Can out leap most if not all defensive backs. Gathers himself and times the leaps well to snatch the ball at the apex of his jump.

Blocking: Top tier blocker. Comes from an offensive system that had him making important blocks countless times week in and week out. Completely takes defensive backs out of a play, very strong from head to toe. Uses proper technique with knee bend and straight arms. Gives good effort and enjoys the physical part of the game.

Body Control/Adjustment: Very balanced that can adjust left, right, and upward very well. Struggles when going down to the ground while trying to make a catch. Was often sent downfield and had the quarterback simply throw it up and Thomas consistently adjusted his body position to make the tough catch.

Concentration/Hands: Rarely drops a ball within his reach, but does have the occasional lapse in concentration when nobody is around him. Has enormous, strong hands that easily control the football. A pure hands catcher, rarely lets it get into his body.

Release: Is more than physical/strong enough to toss away a corner in press coverage. Just needs more experience and work on technique to properly get in to his route against press coverage. Rarely saw it in college because he is too physical for most if not all collegiate corners.

Route Running: Very green as a route runner. Ran an extremely limited tree at Georgia Tech because of the simple scheme. Rounds his cuts and takes too many steps when he need to make a 90 degree or 180 degree turn. Needs a lot of work in this area.

Separation: Does not consistently get the separation underneath. The further downfield he gets, the more separation he obtains. However because he is a long strider, his shorter routes do not get the necessary separation.

Size/Length/Hand Size: Has the body of a small tight end. Enormous frame with a lot of weel evedloped muscle. Long arms and enormous hands. Makes the football like tiny when he is carrying it.

Speed: Has showed elite speed in the open field. Has run away from some fast defensive backs in the ACC. Appears slower than he is because of the length of his strides.

Vision/Run After the Catch: A weapon in the screen game. Very tough to tackle because of his size and power in his legs. More of a straight line runner than a guy that has the wiggle to make guys miss.

Final Word: In a scheme where the run comes first, second, and third, the ability of Thomas was not put on full display over the past few years. If he had been playing in an NFL pro set offense, Thomas could be the most sought after receiver in this class. But because of his lack of experience running the full route tree and reading coverages, he is going to enter the league as a raw talent that needs a lot of coaching. The ceiling with this player is just as high as any receiver in this class, yet he will likely be available in the second round. Considering his strong work ethic and love for all aspects of the game, one has to believe that Thomas is going to mold himself in to a top flight receiver in the NFL. Once he learns the little details surrounding technique, he is going to be a legit number one receiver that can do it all.

For a team that likes to run the ball.

Thomas is gonna make a hell of a pick. Possibly the most underrated trait for WR is their downfield blocking, obviously this guy has had a ton of experience.

Good WR too.

Bradshaw, what do you think about the Jets looking at him in the second?

Will he be there? Even if this guy takes a little while to develop, it sounds like he has the work ethic to do so, and it seems like he can be utilized as a Nate Washington/Mike Wallace type of deep threat number 3 WR in his rookie year, and it also seems like he would be an asset in the running game.

Nate Washington/Mike Wallace

I think you meant Marques Colston. Ha

Marques Colston is a top 10 WR in the NFL.

It would be a ton to ask of a guy to do that in his first year. I think Thomas is a project with a ton of skill, but he is raw. He can be an instant deep threat, you don’t need awareness of route running to run straight down the field, and if he can block like I’ve read he can, he can really help the Jets in both facets.

I'm

Saying he could have a Marques Colston type rookie year, in which Colston made a huge impact.

I dunno if he lasts to the Jets in the 2nd

seems like the norm with the top talented WR in this draft aside from Tate and Bryant, either the QB was horrible or the team didn’t use the forward pass.

But if he die, he could work out real well.

I dunno about Colston. They teach route running at Hofstra (…Wayne Chrebet) and while Colston was a project, he had a clue.

Thomas does too, he just hasn’t done it much in college.

I like Brandon Lafell better tho (another one with the QB stench)

walterfootball doesnt even have him in his 4 round mock at all

and he is a pretty respectable mock guy

cant find the one that was early 4th.. point is early 3rd is not a dream for a guy that cant run routes or get separation

GT is on your mind...

It would be interesting seeing two of the best wide receivers in Tech history playing on the same field together on Sundays. Picking him up in the third round would be a steal. He is a big, physical receiver who has shown he is a very capable run-blocker. Has the size and speed to be an excellent pro. When it comes to learning how to run a route and other techniques, the kid has the mental ability to learn. He stayed academically eligible for four years (RS Junior) while at Georgia Tech. Impressive prospect…

Great write up!

I’ve been keeping an eye on Thomas all year, mainly for fantasy league purposes. I can’t wait to see him at the combine. And I hope he ends up somewhere that can use him properly.

Watch for the Bills in the second rd with this guy. I think Gailey recruited him and loves blocking wide receivers. If we get our LT with the 1st we could pick someone up to replace TO and play opposite Lee Evans.

Bills 2nd rounder

If the Bills drafted Thomas in the 2nd round, it would be a pretty good pick. The only problem with it is: We have bigger holes to fill. I wish the Bills had the luxury of drafting a WR like Thomas in the 2nd round… but we really don’t. Our first round pick will hopefully be a LT like Davis or Bulaga, but we’ll need our 2nd rd pick for our front seven on defense.

The obvious ties to Chan Gailey and Georgia Tech are there… we’ve already recruited several coaches that came from GT. Demaryius Thomas would be awesome in Buffalo… provided he has a QB to get the ball in his hands. I struggle with BPA vs need in mock drafts all the time… but the holes that we have in the trenches might be too big to go after him in the 2nd round. Unless we can pick up an extra draft pick… I won’t hold my breath on that though.

Dan, great write up.

I have heard a lot about Tate, Briant, Williams, even Gilyard, but not enough about this guy, the man with the highest ceiling in the draft. This scouting report seems a little bit Randy Moss esque.

Great write up

I’ve been a fan of this guy all season. If he runs a 4.3 at the combine, he goes in the first.

i cant see that happoning... the fasts i have seen him listed is 4.5..

also most mocks experts have him late 2nd early 4th… a 1st is to soon for a guy that cant get separation or run a route…

by det32 on Feb 7, 2010 12:25 AM EST up reply actions

Just cuz he's listed at it...

doesn’t mean he’s gonna run it.

4.5’s usually generic for the ‘experts’ to put down when they have no clue.

If he runs a 4.3…he’ll be the first WR off the board (he’s not running a 4.3).

There's a way.

Dez Bryant, Damian Williams, Golden Tate, Brandon Lafell, Arrelious Benn.

Those are the top WR. Other then his college’s offense, I don’t see any reason that Thomas is below this guys. He’s as tall as any of them, but the biggest of them all. He’s 6"3 230lbs.

In the pro day and combine, they’ll see how he runs routes, that’s really the only thing that separates him from the others…all he usually does is just sprint down the field (that’s not his fault…and its kinda like what Calvin Johnson did there anyway, he turned out good)

No way? I’d say there’s a strong possibility he’s in the first round and a candidate to be the top WR off the board.

WR this big don’t grow on trees. Him running a 4.5 is a lot different then someone like Dez Bryant running a 4.5. Thomas outweighs Bryant by about 15-20lbs!

Very accurate analysis.....

of BayBay. As a Tech fan who has seen every game he’s played your thoughts are spot on. The player he most reminds me of (and I realize this would be his ceiling) is Anquan Boldin with a bit more size. He is EXTREMELY physical & can get off the line against anyone. As you stated, he’s a beast of a blocker. He has the largest & strongest hands of anyone I’ve ever met (including Calvin Johnson). But to say his route running skills are raw is an understatement. BayBay will need at least one if not two years to adjust & learn how to run routes, read defenses, etc.. Your point about short area quickness (or lack of) is also very accurate. The team willing to be patient & allow him to develop will have a terrific player who values team concepts & contributes in many ways, including special teams. FWIW, he’s gone as low as 4.46 while working out for the draft.
