Around SBN: Dog Football! Which Breeds Are Best Suited For The Gridiron?

Texas vs. the Nation open thread

Hey, why not? It's football. It's checking out players. This is airing on CBSC (channel 613 on DirecTV).

Find my preview here. I'm keeping a close eye on quarterback Ryan Perrilloux and offensive tackle Jared Veldheer.

Note: I'll be leaving at half time. We're snowed in here and I need to shovel. You can also follow the Draft Guys' Twitter.

Perrilloux is the starting quarterback for the Texas team. His TD/Int ratio this season was 23:2.

HOLY CRAP!

Bernie Kosar, my man, is one of the coaches for the Nation team. Awesome.

North Carolina defensive end E.J. Wilson looked good coming around the edge to get a sack. He’s a big guy.

Perrilloux looks pretty good taking the snap from under center. That’s something you can’t always say about this year’s quarterback prospects. Where he didn’t look good, though, was after he drops back. He keeps his feet dancing around too much.

It can be a nice luxury. Getting CBSC means I get all the Air Force games I want!

Veldheer

He’s playing right tackle, and looks nothing like he could work on the left side. His footwork is really, really slow. While it didn’t affect the play, the man he was blocking got past him on two consecutive plays.

Crompton

How’s he looking? At the beginning of the season, he was one of the worst QBs ever. He seemed to pick up steam and could possibly even be drafted.

wish I could find the game streaming online…

Sorry. I was peeling and, subsequently, eating an orange. He looked avearge. He throws too high. His deep pass is pretty decent.

A.J. Cooley, a running back from Shorter College (NAIA) runs really hard. He’s 6’1, 230 pounds. Played in a triple option. He’s got a good first cut. Speed looks decent, quickness looks good. He’s had four straight runs.

I love draft site rumors. One site, which I won’t bother to publicize, is going gaga over Texas receiver Kelton Tindal. He’s from Newberry. This site is claiming he runs a 4.1 40-yard dash. Oh brother.

Rusty Smith

He’s in the game now and struggling.

I have to believe that Trindon Holliday will find a spot in the NFL. He clearly loves to play football and has ridiculous speed. He’s only 5’5, but goodness is he fast. I’d still take Brandon Banks, Dexter McCluster and Jacoby Ford over him, but he’s really fast.

Another good RB

Keiton Flemming of West Texas A&M. 6’0, 200 pounds

He had a real good burst and vision in the open field. Showed a nice juke fake. The annoucners are saying he’s not a good receiver. And he ran into his fullback on a goal line play.

the announcers and writers need to do their homework

keithon is one of the best receiving backs in the nation. i would be willing to bet he led all backs in receiving in the nation or pretty close too it. i know that came from a writer at monday’s practice but he has very good hands…trust me

by keithondad on Feb 7, 2010 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

This game is filled with guys who are good at a few things, but aren’t elite anywhere. And they have big struggles.

Another really intriguing player is tight end Clay Harbor of Missouri State. He’s 6’3, 245 pounds. He’s a really good blocker and has decent hands.

Rusty Smith fumbles a snap which is picked up by UTEP CB Cornelius Brown, who returned it for a touchdown. Brown looked really fast.

Veldheer

Is now at left tackle and continues to look not so good. He’s way too slow out of his stance. I might go so far as to say he’s may only be a guard in the pros.

Marcus Easley

Has he made any noise yet? Seems like a smart, hard working kid. If reports are true that he runs a 4.40 40yd dash, at 6-2 210 lbs he’s worth looking at. I’ve never seen him play. Any insight to his game? Catch with his hands or body? Potential for a decent route runner?

by theboysfan on Feb 6, 2010 3:01 PM EST reply actions

I think he’s been thrown to once. Nothing special as a receiver. He has good size, average hands, average route runner, below-average body control (his ability to get open with a cornerback on him). Seems like at best a fourth receiver on a team.

CBSC

showing highlights of Missouri receiver Jared Perry. Four highlights, four body catches. Ick. He runs good routes, but that pass catching isn’t good. He got open in Missouri’s spread offense but won’t be that open in the NFL.

E.J. Wilson

Gets another sack. It was a effort play thanks to good coverage.

And he almost got another right there. He might be the best player in today’s game. He’s showing a better burst off the snap than I thought he had.

No, I think he could play DE in a 3-4, actually. He’s got good power.

Thanks

I can’t watch the game so I appreciate it. How does he hold up against the run?

by theboysfan on Feb 6, 2010 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

He holds up well. He doesn’t do anything special, he’s just really really solid. Kind of reminds me of Ray Edwards.

yeah

he is really good. Sort of exploded out of no where. He can get deep and make the tough catch over the middle.

Im high on Ogletree.. but Cowboys could use another WR. I like what I’ve read about Easley. Catches with his hands, attacks the ball. I’ve never seen him play, just what I’ve read.

Veldheer gives up a sack

He’s so raw. Some plays he looks good, other plays really terrible. Fifth rounder, at best, I’d say.

The quarterbacks in this game have been pretty bad so the receivers haven’t shown much. I like Gettis more than just about anyone, but he hasn’t been thrown to yet.
