How Detroit gets 9 Picks in The 1st 4 Rounds.

I was just thinking. How valuable is Suh to the Lions.  Lets assume St Louis wants and picks Clausen.

Detroit on the clock..  Tampa really wants Suh. Trade 1st and 3rd ( draft chart Value- DCV) for Suh.

Detroit on the clock. Seattle wants Bradford before Washington.  Gives 1st, 2nd,and 4th for #3 pick ( DCV)

Washington on clock- They take Okung since they need him more than McCoy or Berry

Kansas City on the Clock- They can have McCoy, Berry, McClain, or Haden.  They take  Berry who they covet.

Detroit on the clock. Denver now can move ahead of Cleveland for McCoy. Why not. 1st, 3rd, and 4th for #6 pick (DCV)

Cleveland takes Haden

Oakland takes McClain

Buffalo takes pick of the litter in OTs .I say Campbell but Buluga or Davis would do as well.

Jacksonville on the clock. Either Spiller or Derrick Morgan.  I will say Morgan

Detroit on the clock.  What do they really need.  (RB, CB, DE, DT, OG, OT) all are available here. And most are available later.  Who needs something.  Believe it or not Seattle has to have the OT to protect their new QB but has nothing to trade.

Miami will want Dan Williams and knows Detroit will take him.

Four teams need a OT.  Detroit, San Fran,  Seattle and Green Bay.  Only Davis and Buluga are left of the top ranked OTs.  Green Bay probably won't give up three picks as the chart suggests, and the Tuna won't give up enough points to make it worth Detroit's time.  49rs could give a 1st and 4th to choose their OT.  Probably not.  I say Detroit  chooses  Dan Williams as their DT if they wanted a DT in the first place or Spiller would be a great back for them.  They can have Graham or Iupati.  They can grab the #2 CB or they pick up the #3 OT if they think that's what they want.

Now to fill all of their other needs they have Pick #34, 38, 66, 67,75, 98, 102, and 107

Not bad for trading Suh for Williams. 9 picks in the 1st 4 rounds of a deep draft.   Now I'm not saying these particular trades will happen.  But I do believe that this draft will be a wild ride when it comes to trading.  With only two QBs leading the pack and two special players heading the draft things could get interesting.

Just a fun exercise in dreaming.  As a Vike fan I am hoping Detroit won't do this.

If it's deemed spam, it gets deleted.

the only one i cant see happoning is the 1st trade(bucs moving up).. but who knows.. if TB wants him that bad i think we can get there 2nd (from bears)

by det32 on Feb 8, 2010 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

right..

but the FO dosnt give a crap if you have a hard on for suh lol they will do what they think is best..

by det32 on Feb 8, 2010 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

That's the problem

Is Suh that much better than McCoy? Is it worth the higher cost in salary and picks? I think that the Bucs just draft McCoy here and feel pretty satisfied with it.

by ninjasocks on Feb 8, 2010 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

Is Suh that much better than McCoy?

“Best Player of the Decade” (whatever that means) doesn’t really address that question. And if even if he was the “Best Player of the Decade”, wouldn’t every other team in the draft be trading up to get him (including players and multiple first-round picks)?

by ninjasocks on Feb 8, 2010 4:30 PM EST up reply actions

Not really.

Going into the year I had McCoy higher than Suh and it wasn’t until the half way point of the season that I moved Suh to #1 DT in my rankings. McCoy was largely overshadowed by playing the same position in the same conference as Suh.

I thought McCoy was going to come out last year and be a top 10 pick. If you take away Suh’s awesome senior year, there career stats are fairly even.

Gerald McCoy
40 games
83 tackles
33 tackles for loss
14.5 sacks

Ndamukong Suh (not counting senior year)
41 games
115 tackles
32 tackles for loss
14.5 sacks

fairly even

now add Suh’s senior year
55 games
200 tackles
56 tackles for loss
26.5 sacks

I think they are fairly even not 1/2 more like 1a/1b

McShay, Todd McShay you hear me boy? It's me TJ and I'm coming for your damn job boy! Oh be scared, be very scared McShay.

by tj.hendricks on Feb 8, 2010 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

And some scouts have McCoy ranked higher than Suh

Which means that the Bucs will probably be happy to draft McCoy at #3 and wouldn’t be all that interested in trading up to #2.

by ninjasocks on Feb 8, 2010 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

Depends on who they like better

If the Bucs like McCoy better than yeah no need to trade up, if they feel like Suh is the top guy, then yeah they could.

It’s going to be a mini version of the Manning/Leaf debate.

God I love the draft!

McShay, Todd McShay you hear me boy? It's me TJ and I'm coming for your damn job boy! Oh be scared, be very scared McShay.

by tj.hendricks on Feb 8, 2010 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

But its more than who they like better

If they think McCoy is 95% of Suh, then they probably won’t trade up because the costs outweigh the benefits.

by ninjasocks on Feb 8, 2010 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, If the Bucs like McCoy better they won’t trade up that is what I said. If they like Suh better they very well could.

Teams rarely trade down one pick (2nd to 3rd).

Also, I think the Seahawks would be higher on Clausen since Pete Carroll ran a pro style offense himself, and he recruited Clausen, just speculation. Seems silly to trade up for a QB when two are still available.

by LantermanC on Feb 8, 2010 1:04 PM EST reply actions

Ok, But there are only two top notch Qbs. If St Louis takes Clausen are they going to pass on Bradford?

They could. They still have 2 QBs on their roster.

Broncos.

There is no way the Broncos make that trade, because they have too many needs as they’re only in their second offseason of rebuilding the roster and need to infuse it with youthful players that fit to compliment and supplement the vets in place. I’m also not sure that they’d be that interested in McCoy, who would be a DE in their 3-4. As for the rest of it, it seems implausible.

I sincerely doubt the rebuilding Bucs would sacrifice a premium pick to move up one slot to take DT 1A over DT 1B or that Seattle is that hardpressed for a QB (with a risky prospect, when they could sit tight and adress other equal needs such as OT and RB with equal or better value). I hate to burst your bubble, but I’m just not buying any of it. Heck, I think it’s mean of a Vikes fan to toy with Lions fans like this!

"A player who conjugates a verb in the first person singular cannot be part of the squad, he has to conjugate the verb in the first person plural. We. We want to conquer. We are going to conquer. Using the word 'I' when you're in a group makes things complicated." ~ Wanderley Luxemburgo, 1999

Not sure that McCoy wouldn't fit. It wasn't my idea. I thought someone more knowledgeable

than I thought it would work. You know your team better than I. The idea was to show possibilities caused by the demand for Suh and Bradford leaving McCoy hanging as trade bait. Sorry for the mixup with the Broncos. Who do you think would want McCoy at the 6 spot?

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by lifelongvike on Feb 8, 2010 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know who would, but a few that could are:

Jacksonville (needs more pass rush), NYG (needs another DT), maybe ATL or HOU.

I think its fun to think about possibilities, but trades up to the #3 spot aren’t very likely because they require a lot of resources and require higher salaries.

by ninjasocks on Feb 8, 2010 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

But they are only trading up to the #6 spot.

your numbers are off but this what they are and what it would look like.. Might as well make a mock of it to

1st (10th overall from Denver) DT Dan Williams – starter

2nd (34th overall) CB Kyle Wilson – starter

2nd (40th overall from Seattle) OG Mike Johnson – starter

3rd (66th overall) DE Greg Hardy – starter

3rd (67th overall from Tampa Bay) WR Demaryius Thomas – starter num 2

3rd (81st overall from Denver) S/ KR/ CB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (might make a better S in the nfl) – starter at S maybe CB??

4th (98th overall) OLB A.J. Edds – could be starter or a back up till Sims or JP is out

4th (102nd overall from Seattle) RB LeGarrette Blount – change up

4th (112th overall from Denver) OG/ C Eric Olsen – starter at RG till dom is gone then he be our C

5th (130 overall) CB Brian Jackson – could start by end of year..maybe even right away on our team..

5th (155 overall from Denver) P Zoltan Mesko (yes I know we need a lot but if we pull of this trade we can do this) – starter that can punt more then 20 yards

6th (162 overall) BPA

It was not a 1 game mistake

Blount has had several run ins off the field. He was even suspended his freshman year at Oregon.

by Flounder69 on Feb 8, 2010 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

*Junior Year*

Blount spent his freshman and sophmore years at a JC. He was suspended for a quarter his junior year against Cal, then after the season he was suspended indefinitely. Then we all know the Boise incident.

McShay, Todd McShay you hear me boy? It's me TJ and I'm coming for your damn job boy! Oh be scared, be very scared McShay.

by tj.hendricks on Feb 8, 2010 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

Here is the history. He was suspended for one quarter of a football game.

Then was suspended in by a coach about to be fired and was reinstated by the new coach.
Not perfect but hardly damming. Heres the story by Wiki

Blount entered his junior year at Oregon sharing the running back role with senior Jeremiah Johnson. The two backs lived together, and the talkative Johnson advised Blount in his first Pac-10 season.12 For Blount, it was the first season in which he split time with another running back, and his reaction was mixed.13 The two backs each contributed nearly 100 yards and three touchdowns in an early 63–14 win over the Washington State Cougars,14 and both again performed well in a late season victory over the Oregon State Beavers.15 But Blount brought lackluster performances to games against USC16 and Cal.17 Overall, Blount rushed for 17 touchdowns, setting a single-season school record,18 and 1,002 yards.1920 Blount and Johnson became only the second duo in team history to both clear 1,000 rushing yards in the same season; Johnson led the team with 1,201 yards.21

He clashed several times during the season with veteran head coach Mike Bellotti, earning a suspension for the first quarter of a November loss to the Cal Golden Bears for “not following team rules.”22

After the end of the season, he missed a number of workouts.13 Bellotti suspended him indefinitely on February 10 for “failure to fulfill team obligations.”23

Blount responded fairly well to the suspension, improving his attendance in both academic and athletic pursuits. He was reinstated by newly-appointed head coach Chip Kelly in March.1924 He attended some, but not all, voluntary workouts during the off-season, but was praised for an improved attitude by fellow members of the football program.25 He arrived at training camp in better physical shape than in 2008.26 At 243 pounds (110 kg), he was somewhat above his optimal weight, but was slimming down, and aiming for a 2,000 yard season.25 Blount was named to the watch lists for the Walter Camp Award27 and the Doak Walker Award28 for the 2009 season.

Depends on combine/pro day

If he can move his 40 up a bit, and prove to teams that he has indeed changed, then yes without question. Positional drills will be big as well, can he catch the ball? If he shows he has good enough hands then his stock will skyrocket.

Right now I have him in the 3-4 range, but he is one of the most intriguing prospects heading into the combine/pro days.

Well DT32 might get him at the top of round 4 then, but I think he goes as the #3 or #4 RB.

You know what really shocks me is that 5 CBs could be off the board by pick #40 and only one or two Rbs by that same time. Always surprises me how plentiful RBs are in the later rounds.

by lifelongvike on Feb 8, 2010 3:56 PM EST reply actions

The corner class is really strange this year. You have Joe Haden as the cream of the crop and then a bunch of guys that could go low 1st all the way to mid 3rd.

Patrick Robinson, Devin McCourty, Kyle Wilson, Donovan Warren, Brandon Ghee, Javier Arenas, Dominique Franks, Perrish Cox, SydQuan Thompson……….. I have seen could go as high as late round 1 (28ish) or you can find them in the mid 3rd. It’s going to be interesting to see how these teams grade them to see where they go. I’ve read that the Jets and Packers are high on Kyle Wilson and the Falcons like Perrish Cox.

As for the RBs, I think it comes down to the teams big boards as well, it will start by how high CJ Spiller goes and could trinkle down. IF the Patriots and Chargers value a RB more than any other position left you could see two plucked in round 1(assuming Spiller is gone), then in round 2 Seattle and Washington could be looking for an upgrade depending on who’s left and that could be the thumpers like Gerhart and Dixon. Maybe KC and Detroit go RB in round 2?

Yes potentially RBs could fall, but potentially they could be gone real quick.

That is a pretty far fetched trade scenario. Trades in the top three have happened how often in the last decade?

Trade Adrian Peterson

That’s about the only way.

Trading down from #2 and getting picks is alot different than trading from #30 and getting picks.

Some teams don't need 9 picks in the first 4 rounds

When you look at the teams that pick in the bottom year after year you have to give them credit for good drafting. Colts have had one selection above #24 since 2000. And that was the 11th pick. And with that they chose Freeny. One pick in the top half of the draft since 2000. That is the best I can find. Out of all the teams. Granted they did have their Franchise QBOF already on the team but still that’s better than everyone else.

The Vikings need to take a page from the Colts playbook. Get a QB and just draft smart after that. It only takes a couple players per year to keep a team strong. No reason to blow up a good team for the hope of tomorrow.

QBOTF

I tried to post about trading up to QBOTF but that was not received too well. Now once we get one then we can draft like the Colts. I have to start a separate thread.

by MarkSP18 on Feb 11, 2010 7:34 PM EST reply actions

Separate thread would be fine.

But I said “get” a QBOF not “trade up and get QBOF”. Like i have said before I’m not against it I’m just not closed to that being the only option.

Look forward to your discussion as always.
