How many Compensentory Picks will your team get?
Compensatory picksIn addition to the 32 picks in each round, there are a total of 32 picks awarded at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as "compensatory picks," are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick.
If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as "supplemental compensatory selections").
Compensatory picks are awarded each year at the NFL annual meeting which is held at the end of March; typically, about three or four weeks before the draft.

As a Bengals fan, I think we will end up getting 3 Comp picks for the 2010 Draft.
3rd round - TJ Houshmanzadeh
5th Round - Stacey Andrews
7th Round - Ryan Fitzpatrick
Im trying to put together my Mock Draft, and I want to add Compensentory Picks. So I'm asking the Fans how many, and What round picks do you think your team will get?

How do you figure four for the Bengals?
A team is awarded a comp pick for every free agent they lose minus one for every FA they sign.
The Bengals get two max but probably one since the loss of Coles probably won’t count. Here is an article for you to look at. http://forum.go-bengals.com/index.php?showtopic=53153
.Apparently, there is a unique situation with regard to Coles. The Jets renegotiated Coles’ contract in order to render his 2009 season voidable. With his contract voided, Coles became an unrestricted free agent (UFA) and signed with the Bengals.
Previously, players who’ve had their contracts voided have qualified for the league’s compensatory equation after becoming UFAs, even if the voidable year was put in the contract through renegotiation. Coles’ situation, however, is less clear, according to the compensatory picks expert, because of the timing. Coles’ deal with the Jets was renegotiated on Feb. 25, 2009; his contract voided on Feb. 27.
According to this particular expert, “normally, a player earns a void in his contract by doing something more than simply waiting two days, so it’s possible that the NFL will not consider Coles eligible for the comp picks equation. Players who have had contract years simply deleted, not converted to voidable years by renegotiation, have never qualified for the equation. And Coles’ situation is close to that.”
Because a voidable year has never disqualified a player from the equation, this particular expert is currently projecting that Coles will be eligible.
Bottom line for the Bengals: They may receive just one comp pick for the 2010 draft and perhaps no more than two, which would give them anywhere from eight to nine draft picks during April’s annual selection process.
I have read that the Vikes will get two comp picks. Probably 5th rounders.
Hope this helps.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
Sorry I meant that you said three to the Bengles.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
that sounds like it should hurt the Jets not the Bengals

I think we are only going to get one
Minnesota — The Vikings lost two qualifying players and signed one, giving them one comp pick. The signing of Karl Paymah cancels out the loss of their lower-valued player lost, and that is Darren Sharper, whose performance this season is irrelevant to the equation. That leaves the Vikings with a pick as compensation for losing Matt Birk, in either the fifth or sixth round.
unless
Signing Brett Favre is our 2nd free agent, and then we get no comp picks.
Oh well. I was hoping for some comp picks.
by medicineball on Feb 8, 2010 11:00 PM EST up reply actions
Brett was retired from the Jets not a free agent. Thats why he doesn't count.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
Wow!
That is good.
Now does “qualifying free agent” exclude Darren Sharper, because the Vikings didn’t draft him? If it does, then we gained Paymah, and lost Birk. We also gained Onatolu, J Leman, and some other free agents.
Reflecting on this, I must not understand this thing. It’s like a black box for me. I just hope we end up with a comp pick or two.
Thts really inrteresting. I wonder if the FO did that on purpose or if it was just Brett being slow?

Heres an important list for you. This list gives all the players signed and lost by each team.
If a player has a NQ by their name it means they don’t qualify for comp picks under the rule.
The same guru who did this list says Coles will qualify for the Bengals so that takes you to one comp pick. Here is his article. http://adamjt13.blogspot.com/2009/11/updated-look-at-2010-comp-picks.html

An updated look at the 2010 comp picks
Here’s an updated look at the players eligible for the 2010 compensatory picks equation. For players who were cut during the season, the date is included, as is the date they re-signed, if applicable. Players on the bubble to qualify for the equation are listed either as “high bubble” or “low bubble.” The “high bubble” players typically have a better chance of qualifying, depending on their playing time. “NQ” indicates that the player did not sign for enough money to qualify for the equation.

stacy andrews
has no Compensatory pick-value for the Bengals because he was injured/inactive for the majority of the year (I believe 10 games)
he was signed to a $40m contract, that warrants something

I think we get
2 4ths (McFadden and Washington) both of whom are 5mil plus and started all year
maybe a 7 for Lefty because he signed a fairly high value contract and made a start or two

so now that i know the texans...
how many picks would texans get if any?
by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Feb 8, 2010 3:12 PM EST reply actions
Houston probably gets nothing.
They signed more eligible players than they lost.
My Seahawks probably get two 7th round selections, but they could have as few as 1 and as many as 3.
Falcons
Foxworth- 3rd, signed a four-year $28 million contract. Started every game, 4 INT’s/16 PDef.
Boley- 3rd/4th, signed a five-year, $25 million contract. Started 11 games, 84 tackles.
Brooking- 6th, signed a three-year $6 million contract. Started 14 games, 106 tackles/3 sacks. The addition of Peterson devalues this, I assume.

Yes he will count. 3 lost FA minus 2 signed free agents mean 1 comp pick.

your counting SS roy williams right?

No, he was traded not released as a Free Agent I think.
Just look at the list posted above.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
Your correct.
Apparently the only players that count are ones that “qualify” Roy Williams was cut terminated by Dallas so he therefore doesn’t qualify. The point of the comp picks is to compensate a team for the loss of players to free agency. When you terminate a contract you don’t lose a player to free agency you lose a player voluntarily.
You have 3-2=1. If Coles doesn’t “qualify” you should have 3-1=2 by my reasoning.

right 2
some people were sayin 1

But according to the guru he will count so you should get 1.
Who knows you might get lucky. Plus maybe you get one of those upgrades for Housh. Know one ever truly knows about Comp picks.

not if Laverneus coles counts
and that 1 comp pick will be a result of losing TJ whoseyamama
