confused on top rated QB's
I have heard many draft rumors about next year and i am very confused
The guys on ESPN were project that the top QB's for next year's class are Washington's Jake Locker and Standford's Andrew Luck. According to Mel Kiper these guys have "thrived" in pro style offenses and should battle it out for #1 pick. Locker last season threw for 21 touchdown with 11 ints. seems like a good college stat but does that scream #1 pick to u? i kno hes 6-3 but does that scream great QB? Luck was even worse last season. Luck is 6-4 but hes not fast like locker is. he threw for 13 touchdowns and 4 int and had the leading rusher on his team so that means many players in the box. he had like 180/YPG. that does not sounds like a #1 pick but gud thing im not a GM

Since you're from Hawaii, you should know that stats aren't everything (Timmy Chang, Colt Brennan).
Jake Locker has a horrible offensive line. He plays in a pro style offense, he ran for almost 1000 yards his freshman year. He can make 30 yard darts pretty accurately.
I don’t agree with Luck, but I’ve been hearing it’s Locker and Ryan Mallett from Arkansas.

tell me how colt brennan is any different than ty detmer, timmy chang, or Graham Harrell??
all of those guys were system QBs. the best was detmer and he is a career backup. harrell had a more prolific college career in a similar spread offense…now he is a coach…
please tell me what makes a guy better from a stat amplifying offense than guys with better stats???
by bross09 on Feb 9, 2010 7:44 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
well for one
colt brennan is 6’3. hes athletic but not a runner. he had better numbers than chang in just 2.5 years. hes a proven winner. if his offensive line could block in the sugar bowl he would have been a third round pick. just wait till he gets hit shot
by HawaiiEaglesFanatic on Feb 10, 2010 2:30 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
oh…so he is 6’3 He must be great. Drew brees. he is short so he sucks right??
I cannot believe that you are insisting that height makes a good QB. Derek anderson is 6’6…is he good??
He didn’t show elite athleticism at the combine. I would not say his is any better than detmer or harrell.
I think he could be decent when he gets a shot but I do not think he will be a superstar. to think otherwise shows how much of a HOMER YOU ARE.

Oh, thanks. I didn't know that. I'd prefer him over Null for us
I’d still like to see him get a shot at playing. If the Rams are willing to try out Null, what the hell. i’d like to see Harrell get a shot before just writing him off.
by dbcouver on Feb 10, 2010 2:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
lol…yeah…especially b/c of the curse of ryan leaf (ryan leaf was Null’s position coach in college). honestly, I do not see a competent QB on that roster. I see some bright spots on the O-Line and some nice young receivers but no one who can get them the ball.

You know out of Case Keenum, Colt Brennan, and Graham Harrell, is there really no NFL talent?
I mean, I’d like to see some of these guys get into game situations befroe they get written off. Before Brady was in a game situation, he wasn’t thought of very highly. Same with Warner. I’m not comparing these guys to HOFers but I’m not that confident in the thought process of some of these decision-makers. It’s really depends on opportunity.
by dbcouver on Feb 10, 2010 3:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
at the same time, saying that these guys are guaranteed to be good is dumb. that is what the guy was saying that brennan is guaranteed to be a good NFL QB. I am not even saying it is impossible. it is improbable but not impossible. there is no guarantee even with the best QB prospects.

not saying that he doesn’t deserve a shot at all…
why do you thing because he tore it up in college he will be a monster in the pros?
he has the potential to maybe be good…but will he???
that is the question.

The problem with Harrell was he couldn't throw it 10 yards down field
Every time he threw it in the Senior Bowl, The ball wouldn’t go pass 10 yards.
I getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

Snead and McCoy looked like a top tier picks before last season
I don’t think there’s any way to predict QB stock from year to year. With the rise of the spread offense in the college game it has become more common for college QBs to rack up amazing stats without learning to take snaps from center, make good reads or make all the NFL throws. I’m not all that familiar with Luck, but Locker is hyped because he’s a very athletic double-threat QB with experience in a pro-style offense. He’s also had some success despite playing with a pretty horrible supporting cast.

I read somewhere that Glennon is up to 210 but I doubt that. Won’t believe it til I see it.
I have Dysert right behind Glennon at #4. I give the edge to Glennon just based off of potential. But with Russell Wilson likely starting he’ll probably get bumped down.
When we get closer to the season I have rankings for seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshman. I have them done now for the most part (just little things to change)but what good would it be to post them now? So probably around July/August I’ll post that.

They had him listed as a soph last year so that would mean he’s going into his junior year this year.

It’s really not a good crop of senior QBs as of now. So right now I have him barely over Case Keenum, but if Stanzi continues forgetting what color jersey he is wearing that will most likely drop him. Him being #6 and just say three underclassmen come out that could knock him down to #9 which is most likely 4th roundish.

because he has great size, a solid arm, pretty athletic (outran Derrick Morgan for a good 15 yards), is totally unshakable, and by all accounts a great (and hilariously weird) guy.

I dont understand
why people think so highly of Andrew Luck. I saw a few Stanford games and he looks just like sanchez does with the jets. Throws it maybe 10-15 times a game and hands it off to gerhart 40 times a game. If Stanford didn’t have Gerhart they might have only won 3 games. I think this year he needs to be tremendous to even be considered a first rounder let alone first round pick. I think he should stay at least 2 more years. Locker looks like the real deal along with Mallet. I saw Mallet play against Florida and even though his stats didnt seem great he looked like a pro. Locker on the other hand should have left now. He is not going to have that much of a better supporting cast so his stats shouldnt be that much better. Also Pac-10 defenses were exposed in the bowl games so he should have left while his stock was high because next year he is only going to be scrutinized more and since he is playing Pac-10 defenses his stock automatically drops.
by David7 on Feb 9, 2010 12:26 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Luck averaged 24 attempts a game so I don’t know about the 10-15 thing. There were two games last year that he didn’t throw more than 20.
Here are Locker/Luck stats
COMP- ATT- YDS- %- TD- INT- RATING
Locker 230-395-2800- 58.2- 21-11- 129.75
Luck 162-288- 2575- 56.3- 13-4- 143.47
Locker goes 6’3 226 and Luck goes 6’4 235
I don’t really know how Locker can look like the “real deal” yet Luck doesn’t?

Locker runs a 4.4 40 and can be a primary runner for you too
There is also a world of quality difference between the Stanford offense and UWs. UW was vastly improved last year, but it still was carried by Jake. Stanford was carried by Gerhart.

I don't know that he runs a 4.4
He is rumored to run a 4.4.
That is why this year will be interesting for Stanford and Luck without Gerhart what happens? I don’t think there is a huge difference between them I have Locker ahead of him but everyone got so hyped on him because McShay and some other experts said he could go #1. There are also rumors out there that the reason he went back to school is because he got a 2nd round grade from the advisory board.

No matter what his 40 time
He punishes DBs who try to tackle him.
Last year was his first year in a pro style offense and he improved throughout the year. His release was shorter and he definitely learned to make the pro style reads. That huge leap that he took in one season is what has everyone salivating. Before that he was the west coast Tebow. Now he has shown that he can fix his mechanics and make the reads that a pro QB needs to make.
by stufr on Feb 11, 2010 9:22 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
What's your point? OK You win.
Jake Locker is the Greatest QB EVER!!!!!!!!!!!! He is better than Brady, Manning, Montanan all of them. He runs in the 4.2s people, He actually got better during his junior year which never happens usually if you haven’t improved by your junior year then you just suck. He punishes DB’s which no QB has done since Tim Tebow.
Sarcasm
I have nothing against Locker, where have I ever bad mouthed him? Why do Seattle fans feel the need to defend him everytime someone doesn’t think he’ll go #1 overall? Where did I ever say he had bad mechanics? I questioned the rumored 40 time and you go on a rant of something we all know. We’ve all followed Locker this year, me especially, I have a soft spot in my heart for Seattle, I was stationed in Bremerton, WA for 3 years and attended many Husky, Sonics, Mariners, and Seahawk games. I love that city, I follow them just as closely as my Chicago teams.

Touchy aren't we
Mostly I was just bringing up points as to why Locker grades out higher than Luck, which was your orginal question.
Also, he anounced his return to school before he got his draft grade back. To my knowledge his grade has never been anounced, I’m not even sure if they finished giving him one.
by stufr on Feb 11, 2010 2:51 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah and?
I have Locker graded higher than Luck as well, so while I appreciate the participation it wasn’t needed on my part.
My question was intended to David7, who said Locker is the real deal and Luck would have to have a tremendous season to even be considered a 1st rounder. Which I don’t find true at all, so I was asking him why? I also was questioning him because it seemed to me (I could be wrong) that he didn’t watch much of Luck, just to throw out that “he maybe throws 10-15 times a game”. That is untrue.
The Locker/advisory board thing is all speculation, there are reports that he received a 2nd round grade and there are reports he didn’t get it back. It’s all speculation. I don’t know .
Sorry for being a dick, I just don’t like being told stuff everyone already knows.

by TheRealSlimShady on Feb 10, 2010 12:48 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Crap, crap and more crap
There is only 4 guys out of the whole class that I think are worth a damn
LB Jonathan Brown from Tennessee will be good and will probably see alot of time.
QB Chandler Whitmer from Illinois could actually probably start, which would be scary because he’s probably two years away.
WRs Anthony Williams and Darius Millinies are the exact opposites, Williams is 6’5 200ish and Millinies goes around 5’11 170.
Brown is the best of the bunch, we lost alot of recruits to Nebraska, Missouri, and Northwestern.
For Zook being a recruiter he didn’t really do jack this year and it’s most likely his last. A guy to watch for next year is WR DaVarris Daniels from Illinois, he is considering Illinois/Notre Dame, I watched him play last year and he is a man child, he needs some weight he goes 6’3 170 but damn he is good. Also a LB Rodney Coe he is a beast kind of like Vontaze Burrfict from Arizona St. Hopefully we get a new coach and he can reel those two in.

Brian Kelly is really showing that he wants to build an insane passing game. He signed 5 QBs last year (some of them are athletes though so they can play elsewhere if needed) and is targeting just about every good receiver in next years class. I’m interested to see how his first full class turns out.
Also, let me just throw this name out. Ross Gilliam. Commited to Texas AandM this year as a preferred walk-on. He played football for just 1 year (1!) and he can make touchbacks on almost every kick and can make 60 yard field goals. He won a big kicking competition that had some of the best senior kickers across the country. He is also very athletic (he’s good at Bball, soccer, baseball), and who doesn’t want a 6’6 kicker? He also comes from the school that produced Justin Miller.
