Mock of the Wild (two rounds)

This might not be that wild overall, but you be the judge.

For this mock draft, there are a couple of assumptions. First, trades will be factored in. Second, selections are made on the basis of what the team will do, or if that is unknown or unclear, what I think they should do. Here we go.

Star-divide

First round

  1. St. Louis Rams. Pick is traded to the Patriots for two 1sts (2010 and 2011), the Patriots' earliest two 2nds in 2010, and one 3rd (2011) and one 4th (2010), Jarvis Green, Adalius Thomas and Derrick Burgess.
    Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska

Suh becomes the cornerstone of the Patriots' revamped 4-3 defense. The Rams already have two highly-paid high draft picks on the defensive line. The additional picks will help them rebuild without breaking the bank like AIG.

  2. Detroit Lions. "Hey, this defensive tackle is good, too."
    Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma

  3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Former defensive backs coach finds one he really likes.
    Eric Berry, Safety, Tennessee

  4. Washington Redskins. Shanahan drafts OT his first year, just like in Denver.
    Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State

  5. Kansas City Chiefs. The perfect fit in KC.
    Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama

  6. Seattle Seahawks Can't pass up a franchise quarterback.
    Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame

Matt Hasselbeck is traded to the Raiders.

  7. Cleveland Browns. Need meets value.
    Joe Haden, CB, Florida

  8. Oakland Raiders. The Raiders invest in the offensive line.
    Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland

Campbell becomes the starter-apparent at left offensive tackle, where the Raiders could use a talent upgrade.

  9. Buffalo Bills. Can't pass up a franchise quarterback.
    Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma

  10. Jacksonville Jaguars. Tra Thomas is cut. Time to draft a new left tackle.
    Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers

The Jags come to their senses and realize that taking Tebow this early would actually hurt ticket sales more than it would help, because he isn't ready to play in the NFL yet. The Jags will try to get him later in the draft.

  11. Denver Broncos. Brandon Marshall will stay in Denver, and so Josh McDaniels turns to the defense.
    Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee

  12. Miami Dolphins. The run will be stuffed at Sun Life Stadium.
    Terrence Cody, NT, Alabama

As for Cody's supposed weight problem, they don't call it the South Beach Diet for nothing. Seriously, though, Cody's stock will rise again to where it was before the Senior Bowl and he will go in the first round. With Dan Williams off the board, the Fins don't want to be left high and dry.

  13. San Francisco 49ers. Samurai Mike says "Hit 'em in the mouth." Now they will.
    Mike Iupati, G, Idaho

  14. Seattle Seahawks. Pete Carroll wants his new quarterback protected now that the great Walter Jones has retired.
    Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa

  15. New York Giants. Shoring up that once-great defensive line.
    Brian Price, DT, UCLA

  16. Tennessee Titans. Tennesse and USC. They just go together.
    Everson Griffen , DE, USC

  17. San Francisco 49ers. The new 49ers, now with a 1-2 punch.
    C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson

  18. Pittsburgh Steelers. Be strong up front.
    Mike Johnson, G, Alabama

This is a little early, but the All-American guard will become the lynchpin of the Steeler offensive line. He is also said to be the best guard in the draft at zone-blocking, which Bruce Arians likes.

  19. Atlanta Falcons. Need-based pick.
    Donovan Warren, CB, Michigan

  20. Houston Texans. The Texans want to stop the pass, finally.
    Taylor Mays, S, USC

  21. Cincinnati Bengals. An elite player falls to the Bengals? Surely they will pick somebody else, right? Not this time.
    Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma

Furthermore, the Bengals trade a 4th round pick to the Buffalo Bills for Terrell Owens.

  22. New England Patriots. Traded to the Rams. The Rams say, "Could we get some protection?"
    Charles Brown ,
    OT, USC

  23. Green Bay Packers. Mr. Rodgers has intruders in his neighborhood.
    Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma

  24. Philadelphia Eagles. In addition to pressuring the quarterback with blitzes, the Eagles would like the defensive line to do the same thing.
    Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan

  25. Baltimore Ravens. Need meets value.
    Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame

  26. Arizona Cardinals. Need meets value.
    Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State

  27. Dallas Cowboys.Need meets value.
    Maurkice Pouncey, C, Florida

Pouncey will probably move to guard for the Cowboys who have Andre Gurode at center.

  28. San Diego Chargers. With Darren Sproles, the Chargers have lightning. Now they need thunder.
    Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech

  29. New York Jets. Which side will opponents throw to next year?
    Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State

  30. Minnesota Vikings. With a questionable linebacker corps, the Vikings look to beef up,
    Sean Weatherspoon, OLB, Missouri

  31. Indianapolis Colts. The Colts have tended to draft offense in the first round in recent years, but on second thought, defense really does win championships.
    Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida

When Freeney retires, JPP will be ready

  32. New Orleans Saints. "With the 32nd pick in the NFL draft, the New Orleans Saints select…. who dat?"
    Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida

The world champion Saints look to add depth.

  33. Second Round

  34. St. Louis Rams. Needed: one quarterback of sometime in the future.
    Colt McCoy, QB, Texas

The Rams also trade a third rounder for Michael Vick as their quarterback of the here and now.

  35. Detroit Lions. The mission: keep Matthew Stafford alive.
    Jason Fox, OT, Miami (Florida)

Jon Jansen will be let go in free agency. Fox will probably start at right offensive tackle for the Lions, making a solid tandem with Jeff Backus. Stephen Peterman is expected to return. He switches over to left guard. Gosder Cherilus slides over to right guard. With the underrated Dominic Raiola at center, the Lions have a functional offensive line.

  36. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Predator finds new hunting grounds.
    Sergio Kindle, OLB, Texas

  37. Kansas City Chiefs. The opposition's quarterback will be rushed at Arrowhead Stadium.
    Jerry Hughes, DE/OLB, TCU

  38. Cleveland Browns. Filling a need.
    Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State

  39. Oakland Raiders. Tackling. It's important in football.
    Navarro Bowman, OLB, Penn State

  40. Seattle Seahawks. Going for the trifecta.
    Kyle Calloway, OT, Iowa

With a QB and a tandem of tackles, the Seahawks have a future.

  41. Buffalo Bills. "Hey, we need to protect our new franchise quarterback."
    Selvish Capers, OT, West Virginia

  42. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That new quarterback might be good, but who can he throw to?
    Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois

  43. Miami Dolphins . Need-based pick.
Demaryius Thomas , WR,, Georgia Tech

  44. New England Patriots. Traded to the Rams. The forward pass. Now that it has been invented, the Rams should defend against it.
    Chad Jones, S, LSU

  45. Denver Broncos. Broncos are supposed to run.
    Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State

  46. New York Giants. Wanted: defensive back.
    Morgan Burnett, SS, Georgia Tech

  47. New England Patriots. Traded to the Rams. Next item on the shopping list: a stud wide receiver.
    Damian Williams, WR, USC

  48. Carolina Panthers. The football world is stunned because the Panthers have a draft pick. The Panthers are stunned because the player they wanted falls to them.
    Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State

  49. San Francisco 49ers. Need-based pick.
    Dominique Franks, CB, Oklahoma

  50. Kansas City Chiefs. Remember Tony Gonzalez? The Chiefs miss him.
    Rob Gronkowski, TE, Arizona

  51. Houston Texans. Rushing the quarterback. It's not just for #1 overall picks anymore.
    Rickey Sapp, DE/OLB, Clemson

  52. Pittsburgh Steelers. Troy Polamalu needs a comrade.
    Nate Allen, FS, South Florida

  53. New England Patriots. The Patriots have their second pick of the draft.
    Brandon LeFell, WR, LSU

  54. Cincinnati Bengals. What is the biggest need left on the Bengals? Somebody to push Carson Palmer.
    Dan LeFevour, QB, Central Michigan

  55. Philadelphia Eagles. Linebacker needed.
    Daryl Washington, ILB, TCU

  56. Green Bay Packers. "What is this slot receiver I have heard about? We need one, you say?"
    Dexter McCluster, WR/RB, Ole Miss

  57. Baltimore Ravens. Can he cover? Check. Can he return? Check.
    Javier Arenas, CB, Alabama

  58. Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals have a lot of receivers. But few threats at tight end.
    Aaron Hernandez, TE, Florida

  59. Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys need another good safety.
    Reshad Jones, S, Georgia

  60. San Diego Chargers. Simpler way to win. Stop opponent from scoring so much.
    Brandon Ghee, CB, Wake Forest

  61. New York Jets. The question is can someone can get open and catch the ball. The answer is:
    Andre Roberts, WR, The Citadel

  62. Minnesota Vikings. Need-based pick.
    Jerome Murphy, CB, South Florida

  63. Indianapolis Colts. Protect the franchise.
    Jared Veldheer, OT, Hillsdale

  64. New Orleans Saints. The Saints look at Jeremy Shockey and realize one day they will need his replacement.
    Ed Dickson, TE, Oregon

I was looking at the supplemental draft. The Redskins gave up their 2010 3rd round pick, not their 2nd.

We'll take Vladimir Ducasse

It’s a big reach but he’s the best that’s left for our needs IMO

Who did Hasselbeck piss off to get him traded to the Raiders?

You’d think, at least, he’d get traded to the Browns to be reunited with the Walrus. Anyways, what do you reckon the Hawks get for him?

I can’t really argue with the rest of the draft (I’m not sure if Bulaga fits the ZBS, but he seems like a good OT), but in the second round the Hawks pick at 40, not 39.

by ninjasocks on Feb 8, 2010 10:23 PM EST reply actions

lol

I bet the Raiders would give a 4th rounder and maybe a 3rd rounder. They need a quarterback. The Browns would also like Hasselbeck, but would not give up as much, as their need is less.

Bulaga is often listed at 312 lbs, and he is said to be nimble. I think he and Calloway would fit the ZBS.

cuz that makes sense....

Jason Fox is 6"6 315lbs.

He forgot he was a TE about 60lbs ago……

For a Vikes fan medicineball, you don't know anything about the Lions.

Jon Jansen hardly played for us and was ineffective when he did. As some other Lions fans have mentioned, we need a Guard, not a Tackle. I don’t see the Lions going for a Guard until the fourth round. Maybe the third if we trade up from #97 or down from #66.

Jason Fox has serious injury issues. Anyone picking him in the third round or earlier is taking a risk.

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 9, 2010 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

Matthew Stafford is the Lions franchise. He absolutely must be protected. The injuries he suffered in 2009 must be unacceptable to the Lions. You have a superb quarterback. I would love to have him on my team, the Vikings. He is a stud. To have his career shortened by injury would be devastating. It must not be allowed to happen.

The biggest holes in the Lions offensive line are right tackle and left guard.

Jansen took home $5 million from the Lions last year. I don’t know what he stands to earn next year, but it must be in the same ballpark. He will either be a starter or be cut in 2010. Jim Schwartz is a good coach. He won’t stand for paying a backup offensive lineman that kind of money.

I hear you about Fox being too early and the Lions needing a guard.

I know the Lions are sick of draft picks not working out, but Cherilus is not very good. Even though he was a second-rounder, he was taken too high. He is headed for waivers, or backup status, in my opinion.

The Lions should take a right offensive tackle and a left guard in this draft. I’m becoming convinced of this. Taking them earlier rather than later will be big dividends to the Lions.

I appreciate your input. Thank you.

by medicineball on Feb 9, 2010 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, Cherilus was chosen with the # 17 pick in 2008.

I think it is too early to bail on him. This was his first year under a real coach. 2008 was a waste for a lot of Lions. Besides the 0 -16 record, a number of Lions regressed under the direction of Marinelli.
I would like to see a Tackle picked later to develop. Say Roger Saffold, who looked very promising in the Shrine Game.

A good Left Guard [Iupati, Pouncey, Jerry] and the return of Stephen Peterman may solidify that line and allow a decision to be made on Gosder.

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 9, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

pressure

A lot of pressure on Hasselbeck came off of the right side of the line. I don’t think either Cherilus or Jansen is the answer at right tackle. The Lions need to draft a right tackle. Fox would do a good job.

but he went down week 10 i want to say… and when petermen was healthy gos was doing fine.. when Stafford was in there the hole line was fine ( could it be better yes but wasn’t that bad) it was when c-pep was in there that shit hit the fan.. once c-pep throw his hissy fit i think the team wanted to see him on his ass

people need to under stand that you could have the best OT in the game if they have our OG standing next to them they suck.. OG is by far the most underrated position in all of football

Jags drafted two Tackles last year

I think Johnson is a reach in the 1st but I like who is left. The only one I’d rather take is Graham. I like Allen in the 2nd though.

I getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

by Steel in FL on Feb 8, 2010 10:26 PM EST reply actions

To Jags fans

Sorry. I once had Rolando McClain penciled in for you. Then I had to switch him over to the Chiefs. I forgot about you drafting the two tackles last year.

Your team’s pick is a bit of an enigma. Do you go Pouncey? Iupati? Linebacker?

by medicineball on Feb 8, 2010 10:34 PM EST up reply actions

Not Dunlap

What we need is Depth for the D, with a safety that can start in 2-3 years, and a NT that can start next year.

Interesting stuff..

agree with RSS…you may have some angry Jags fans entering this thread.

Very unPatriot’s to make that trade…exactly why it could happen (maybe Belicheck’s spying on us now!!!)

I’m thinking that the Raiders would select Anthony Davis if they’re getting a OT. Mario Henderson, aka the 4th rounder they got for Randy Moss…is actually pretty good as their LT.

BTW…like the Giants picks. I’m more on the Nate Allen bandwagon at this point…but that’s for now…

Rams

Looks like a good trade for the Rams, not sure Bill will do this.

by Captain who on Feb 8, 2010 11:04 PM EST reply actions

4-3

My thinking is based on Belichick wanting to switch to the 4-3. With Suh (or McCoy) he will have a guy who can play the three-technique, the nose tackle, or left defensive end, and be very effective. When the Pats line up in the 3-4, Suh can stay in the game at DE or DT. He would become a blue-chip player on defense. I think the Pats have built up a lot of picks and now they want to make a move.

by medicineball on Feb 8, 2010 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

Belichick runs a hybrid defense, meaning both a 34 and 43

Pats

Them stinkin bastages. Next year they have two #1’s again!

by ct17 on Feb 9, 2010 1:59 PM EST up reply actions

I don't see that the Pats can integrate that many rookies into their lineup.

I know what Belichick’s tendencies are but he also has the tendency to do the unexpected.

The clock is ticking on this group of Patriots [Brady, Moss, Welker, Bodden, Faulk, most of the O Line] and they need someone [or two] to make a significant, instant impact. They are in a great position to move up to get that person(s). Who they think it might be is beyond me.

But you could be right, they may be overhauling right now and continuing to make personnel decisions for the long term. They had four second round picks and two third round picks last year and have not got them all in yet. Another four won’t make that any easier. They may use them for trades for 2011 picks anyways.

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 9, 2010 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

I will be the first to say this......Suh is not that good.

Yes, I agree that he looks like he is the best DT of this class, but not by a lot. If he wanted one of Suh or McCoy he would more likely trade with Detroit to get away from paying for the #1 pick.

I think Detroit would trade the #2 for the 2010 picks, #22,#44, #47, #116 and maybe one other pick. Either another of the Pats’ second rounders or the 2011 first rounder. You can keep the other stuff.

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 9, 2010 10:57 AM EST up reply actions

Dolphins ??

don’t really agree with either Phins picks. I mean Cody is a slob and he will not go to a Dolphins team that early when they stress working out and offseason conditioning, in the second round MAYBE but not the first.

Also Dez Bryant not taken in the first round? that makes no sense. If he is around that late one of the teams will trade up to take him IMO

Also if you were going to go by a need pick in the 2nd round you could also pick Washington as the phins need help more at ILB than at WR

by markus_13 on Feb 8, 2010 11:11 PM EST reply actions

respectfully

I hear you. A Senior Bowl should not hurt anyone’s draft status very much. Cody actually played well at the Senior Bowl and did well at practice.

He is a high character guy, and a high motor guy. The only thing questionable about him is his current weight. If the Dolphins pass on him, he will be taken by the Steelers, Texans, or another team. He will not fall to the 2nd round. The Fins can only get him in the 1st round. There is no better run-plugger in this draft.

by medicineball on Feb 8, 2010 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

Cody’s motor sucks and he is lazy

by TheRealSlimShady on Feb 9, 2010 11:04 AM EST up reply actions

Lazy doesn't block two FGs to win a game.

by Steel in FL on Feb 9, 2010 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

That is a ridiculous statement

Even for a Giants fan. Yes Cody is fat, but he is a dominant force against the run. He was a big part in why Bama has not given up a 100 yard rusher in either of the 2 seasons he played at Bama.

by Flounder69 on Feb 9, 2010 11:47 PM EST up reply actions

Did you watch that game?

Cody did nothing, the backup NT was in for most of the game…just cuz Cody’s on the team and they didn’t give up 100yds rushing, doesn’t mean he had a lot to do with that.

He didn’t do anything until the 2 block kicks.

Figures that a Cowboy fan only looks at the stats and doesn’t watch the game.

Rectum? Damn near killed em!

by FreeBradshaw on Feb 10, 2010 8:05 AM EST up reply actions

What?

Man I am a Alabama fan and watched every snap of every game. Cody was in more than Josh Chapman. Cody was the reason Hardesty was held to a season low 34 yards. The only time Cody was out was the 4th quarter when the Vols went into 4 wide hurry up mode. Yes Cody sits in obvious passing situations because he is not a pass rusher, but to call him irrelevant is just insane. He played better against UT than your golden boy Price.

by Flounder69 on Feb 10, 2010 9:48 AM EST up reply actions

5 Tackles and 2 sacks.

That’s what Price did against UT. Cody did that? No…he didn’t.

Top 2 rushers average 3.2 YPC when UCLA played UT, 3.0 when Bama played em.

Price is the only player on his defense with a realistic shot at being an NFLer (at least from 2009 team).

Cody’s team is stacked with future NFL talent.

Rectum? Damn near killed em!

by FreeBradshaw on Feb 10, 2010 12:25 PM EST up reply actions

Cody is a 3-4 NT

Of course he did not have sacks. He is a run stuffer. If you stick Price at a 3-4 NT and I guarantee he won’t get to the QB either. Trying to compare stats is apples to oranges.

Last year Denver drafted Moreno and signed half of the RB free agents out there. And they throw the ball often. So I see Matthews as unlikely.

I think that is too early for Capers. At the Senior Bowl he had some moments that should have transferred him to cheerleading camp.

You did good with the Jets. And good call on Carson Palmer. He needs to start answering for his performance lapses; it is not all his WRs fault.

Pats fan...

…disagreeing with the trade.

This past year was a rebuilding year and so will next year. We’re going to hold onto as many picks as possible in order to spread around the talent and depth. Our main issues have been 1 injury can eliminate a position (and this past season, we couldn’t use our TEs because our O-Line was so weak).

Honestly, the Jaguars draft may raise eyebrows

But it isn’t completely unheard of. Us Jaguar fans have actually discussed whether or not OT would be an option if it was the player on the top of the board and it wouldn’t be such a bad choice.

The Jaguars had serious troubles with the interior line and it is considered to be one of the top priorities this offseason. With Davis added to the team, the Jaguars could have Eben Britton and Anthony Davis in a training camp battle for the RT spot with the loser playing guard. That would be a pretty bad ass, young line with Monroe, Britton and Davis.

Would the Jags rather have Earl Thomas?

by medicineball on Feb 9, 2010 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

Some would say so

Personally I think drafting to help the secondary is like throwing bricks in the grand canyon. The Jaguars pass rush was one of the worst of all time. The pass defense will not be fixed until the pass rush picks up. I don’t care who’s in the secondary if the quarterback has forever to throw.

I completely agree

The reason I think the Jaguars won’t take a guy like Derrick Morgan is that they already have a lot of money invested in the defensive line. It’s more economical to try to get more out of the young pass-rushers they already have.

by medicineball on Feb 11, 2010 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

Decent mock but a few things

Bradord I believe is the best QB in the draft but wouldn’t fit in Buffalo. Buffalo needs a QB with a bigger arm and that is use to playing in the snow. Also no way in my life time does Dez Bryant fall to the 2nd round. He is the best WR in this class and there is no way Tate is the only receiver in the first round. Also the I saw this posted earlier but i’m going to reiterate that the Jags drafted Monroe and Britton last year so I think they would go defense. Lastly, Terrence Cody dosen’t even deserve to be mentioned in the first 3 round let alone top 15. He is just a fat ass playing football who if he didnt play for Alabama might not even be drafted. He is over weight, out of shape, and isnt that great of a football player, he is just a big guy.

Thanks for your comments. I agree about Dez Bryant. In the next version of this mock, he will go in round 1.

On Bradford, he doesn’t have the biggest arm, but he does have a good arm. I know that there are questions about Bradford. Personally, I believe there is a very good chance of him being a bust. That said, in Buffalo, Chan Gailey evaluates quarterbacks differently. If he stays healthy and improves his game, Bradford could be a great fit in Buffalo.

On Cody, opinions can differ, but it only takes one team to believe in a player to draft them.

Def. not one of the best mocks over but...

You made it good with humor… May I suggest A DE for the bucs in the early second round? Other then that, I dont care:)

by Buc It on Feb 9, 2010 12:27 AM EST reply actions

Yes

Thanks, that’s a good idea. A guy like Brandon Graham would fit if he fell that far. I wonder if the Bucs would draft Carlos Dunlap that high.

by medicineball on Feb 11, 2010 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

Wow

That’s a big trade. Which first rounder would the Patriots be trading next year? They have the Raiders 1st rounder next year. Then the Rams would go tackle?

Would the Jaguars be moving Davis to guard? Ive read some that say he would be a great guard but do you take a guard that high? They drafted Monroe and Britton last year.

I can’t see Mike Johnson he could very well be there in round 2 for them.

Aren’t Taylor Mays and Bernard Pollard pretty much the same player?

Terrell Owens is a free agent so the Bills can’t trade him.

You think Spikes can move to SAM? I don’t see him unseating Vilma in the middle.

That’s a little high for Jason Fox, he has a heart condition which could scare teams away after the Gaines Adams passing, unless he checks out fine at the combine.

Dez Bryant is definitely too low. I can’t see him getting out of round 1. Wouldn’t the Rams take him instead of McCoy that way Vick would have a target besides Avery.

I thought Sean Locklear was a decent RT? I could be wrong.

Selvish Capers is way too high.

McShay, Todd McShay you hear me boy? It's me TJ and I'm coming for your damn job boy! Oh be scared, be very scared McShay.

by tj.hendricks on Feb 9, 2010 3:49 AM EST reply actions

thanks

All excellent points. I think Spikes could move to outside linebacker until Vilma retires.

For the next version of this one, I am thinking the Seahawks may take Jon Asamoah, guard in the second round.

The Seahawks have a lot of money invested in wide receiver and running back. They could use another guard.

by medicineball on Feb 11, 2010 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

There isn't a ton of money invested the RB position

Jones is due $2.45 million this year and Forsett is still working on his 6th-round rookie contract. Meanwhile, the WR corps is looking pretty thin. Branch is definitely gone, Burleson is probably gone and the WR corps may end up consisting of Housh, Obamanu and Butler. It needs some big WRs and some guys that can spread the field.

The biggest need on the line is at LT and the new OL coach has said that he could turn a garbage man into an OG.

by ninjasocks on Feb 11, 2010 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

Jarvis Green and Derrick Burgess are free agents

And I’ve never heard of sign and trades in the NFL. Also, I could see the Pats taking a WR in the second round but not if its their only second round pick.

It’s thinking differently but Belichek hates paying rookies a lot. Part of the reason they took a 2011 Raiders pick for Seymour vs. a 2010 is because 2011 is all but guarunteed to have a rookie pay scale.

by BigRedDog42 on Feb 9, 2010 9:47 AM EST reply actions

Thanks

I appreciate the comments.

While nobody likes paying rookies much, and Belichick may hate it with a passion, there is only one way to get Ndamukong Suh.

CB and TE for the Cards?

I have to dissagree they have much bigger needs in the first and second round. LB and OT would come before CB or TE IMO

Remember no matter where you go in life...there you are!

by McCards010 on Feb 9, 2010 11:24 AM EST reply actions

reasoning

One of my ideas here was to follow what fans were saying. In the Cards’ case, though, I’m thinking about two things.

First, in the postseason, the Michael Adams was exposed. He earned a second chance, at the very least, with the game-winning play against the Packers. That said, in coverage he didn’t help the Cardinals against the Packers or Saints. DRC was injured, too. Adding a first round cornerback would help the Cardinals, especially in nickel packages.

Second, Leinart has great weapons at wide receiver. A young quarterback’s best friend, though, is the tight end. The tight end is a bigger target and can keep drives alive.

I would be interested in your response. Thanks.

by medicineball on Feb 9, 2010 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with McCards

The Cards biggest need is OLB, Berry retired and the other two are over the age of 33. We drafted two last year but Cody was hurt last year. We also need ILB depth Karlos Dansby may walk and Heyes is getting old as well.

Ben Patrick (TE) did ok as the season went on but he missed the first four games. Spach should be better as well after his knee surgery last year. I would look in the later rounds.

I also think CB is a need, seeing how we got smoked quite a bit last year but part of that was our lack of pass rush (our DE’s had the most sacks). I think we address this in the third round. We also drafted Toler last year, he looks promising just still a little raw. I think he could step in and do better than Adams.

by Patw on Feb 10, 2010 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

you convinced me

Aaron Hernandez is only 6’2 so he is not the biggest target anyway.

In my current thinking I have the Cardinals taking Ricky Sapp in the 1st round, and a CB in the 2nd.

There are some big tight ends that will be available in the 3rd round, like Jimmy Graham.

Thanks.

2x LBs for the Chiefs?

I love the first pick…I so hope they take Rolando McClain with their first pick. Hughes would be interesting as the 2a pick, but I do not see them taking a TE as 2b. The reason they traded Gonzo was because he still had good trade value, he wanted to go to a contender (I don’t see Atlanta as a contender, but I hope for Gonzo’s sake), and a TE is not a big part of the offense for a Todd Haley team. I know that sounds crazy when you are talking about a player like Gonzo, but he doesn’t fit the scheme that Haley was running. They traded him because he would not have gotten the looks from the Haley offense. OL is too big of a need as well as Safety. I would like to see 1. McClain, 2a. OL or Safety (but I could live with Hughes), then 2b OL or Safety, and then 3 would be OL or Safety. So in the first 3 rounds, the Chiefs could get 1x ILB, 1x OL, 1x S, and 1x OLB. Something like that would be nice.

Lol

Is that Patriots trade an actual prediction? If so, I’d suggest a massive revision, mainly changing the name of the team trading for the number one pick, cause the Pats would probably never do it.

by Sayre Bedinger on Feb 9, 2010 4:59 PM EST reply actions

Hmm...

While I don’t think JPP is the pick in the first round for my Colts, I DO think that they need another pass rusher, and this is literally the first mock I’ve seen where they’ve taken one there. Veldheer went a round early, and he’s a right tackle, but the Colts could use help all over the line, so I don’t mind it. CB would have been nice. Cox maybe?

by LukeNukem on Feb 9, 2010 7:17 PM EST reply actions

Though I like Pouncey Dallas would definitely trade back.

Since the Rams now have 3 2nds they could easily trade the 2nd 2nd and there 3rd for 27 and draft Dez Bryant. Then Dallas would have more options.

I gave this mock an F for the trades and the missing players.

mball, You can go back and edit this mock to make any changes you would like. FYI.

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 11, 2010 6:40 PM EST reply actions

Honesty

Well, I thought it was good at the time, but based on these comments I’ve made a lot of changes. Sometime later, Sunday, Monday, or later, I will post “version 2.” If that doesn’t go any better, that will be the last one. But it should go better as I am trying to address the comments here.

I don’t want to just go up and edit this mock draft because people might want to come back and see what the commenters were talking about.

by medicineball on Feb 11, 2010 10:39 PM EST up reply actions

Don’t get down because you dont start out as ______ ( insert draft guru you prefer), you just need practice. You are open-minded, which is good.

This is fun. Maybe this is just a great draft year, or something, but I am really getting into the draft this year.

Youre better than Todd McShay.

mball, my second mock had a player twice and received a lot of negative comments.

I understand all the work a two round mock takes. Thats why these guys that do four or seven rounds just blow me away. Every mock has merit and presents some interesting ideas and outlooks. Please continue to mock away.

I suggested editing it as I was not sure that you knew you could.

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 12, 2010 8:16 AM EST up reply actions

no kidding

Yeah, I was thinking I would definitely go to at least four rounds. But two rounds takes a lot of time. Thanks, NL.

Niners

Just a few pointers, if there are any 1st round worthy OT’s left the Niners would draft any of them before a G like Iupati.

by Hoopers Judge on Feb 11, 2010 10:18 PM EST reply actions

Joe Staley

Is there any tackle firmly entrenched for the Niners? Even Joe Staley? I heard that the Niner tackles were fine and the interior line play was suspect.

by medicineball on Feb 11, 2010 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

OK, yeah

I looked over at Niners Nation and they are all screaming for a right tackle.

by medicineball on Feb 11, 2010 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

Iupati

Could probably play right tackle or guard. Both needs for the Niners.

by medicineball on Feb 12, 2010 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

for starters

Dropping from #1 to #22 is a HUGE drop.

McShay, Todd McShay you hear me boy? It's me TJ and I'm coming for your damn job boy! Oh be scared, be very scared McShay.

by tj.hendricks on Feb 12, 2010 11:58 PM EST up reply actions

We don't get Suh or Bradford or Clausen and you're surprised?

Our first pick is another OT? Colt McCoy wiith the 33rd is almost tolerable but I still cringe when I see it on multiple mocks. Then a SS and a WR, two positions outside of the top 5 needs. if this isn’t kicking us in the nuts then what is?

by dbcouver on Feb 13, 2010 9:08 AM EST up reply actions

Rams needs

I don’t think I fully understood Rams needs.

It looks like the biggest needs are: QB, DT, CB, and WR. After that, OLB and OT are very important needs.

Let’s say you did trade down and got guys like Jared Odrick or Lamarr Houston for DT, a CB, a WR, and an OT, all in the first two rounds. At that point, you can either draft Colt McCoy in the 3rd round, if he falls that far, or trade that 3rd round pick to Philly for Michael Vick. You still need an OLB and a RG, but you can draft them in the later rounds.

by medicineball on Feb 13, 2010 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

I'll just let you know my take on it

I have my share of detractors as everyone does though

by dbcouver on Feb 14, 2010 2:16 AM EST up reply actions

our needs at WR are for a #1 WR and thats a luxury we can’t afford till we get some other offensive components in place. Barring injuries we have more DB depth than any other position.

by dbcouver on Feb 14, 2010 2:15 AM EST up reply actions

OK, thanks. I agree that a #1 WR should come at the end of that priority list.

by medicineball on Feb 14, 2010 9:37 AM EST up reply actions

So you just don’t like Colt McCoy? You think he won’t be the guy?

by medicineball on Feb 14, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

I'm sort of suprised to see all the OL going in the first round

And saddened to I want Iaputi on teh Vikes!

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
