Some thoughts on Dan's Mock Draft relating to the Colts

Hi folks. If you don't know me, I'm the guy at the bottom of the blog who has the same administration rights to this blog as Mocking Dan does, but you hardly ever see me post here because Mocking Dan is my personal slave and does all my work for me.

Of course, I kid.

I helped revive this blog with Dan a little more than a year ago, and it has been impressive to see it grow to the vibrant community it is today. Dan deserves all the credit. I'm happy not to get any credit. Instead, send me $5,000 a month in unmarked bills and two vestal virgins dressed in white. I'll update this post later with an address.

OK, that business aside, it's time to talk about Dan's Mock Draft. For SB Nation, when I am not riding Dan's coat-tails, my focus is on the Indianapolis Colts. In Dan's most recent mock, he had the Colts taking the following player:

31. Indianapolis Colts
Sean Weatherspoon | Linebacker | Missouri: The Colts have to be hoping that one of the offensive tackles falls, but that might not be the case. Brandon Spikes is a higher-rated linebacker, but Weatherspoon fits their defensive scheme much better. He can play inside if Gary Brackett isn't brought back. Or he can play outside if needed.

I will always be one of the first to tell anyone that Dan is about as good as it gets when it comes to Mock Drafts.however, with the news that the Colts will likely make middle linebacker Gary Brackett on of the highest paid LBers in football, plus the rumors that they might make an effort to sign Karlos Dansby, it is extremely unlikely that the Colts will draft a linebacker in the first round. Hell, the last time the Colts drafted a backer in the first was ten years ago when they took Rob Morris out of BYU.

For me, an alternative to Weatherspoon is Eric Norwood of South Carolina. From Dan's scouting reports:

3. Eric Norwood | 6'0, 252 pounds | South Carolina

Norwood has the ability to fly off the ball and get after the quarterback. He's still learning outside linebacker after moving from end, but he has great quickness.

As we all saw in the Super Bowl, when the Colts were unable to generate a consistent pass rush due to Dwight Freeney's injury, Drew Brees completed 86% of his passes on his way to an MVP and a Lombardi Trophy. Norwood can play DE in the Colts system, using his speed and pass-rushing skills to get to the QB. He could also be utilized on special teams. The former SC special teams coach (Ray Rychleski) is the current special teams coach of the Colts. He likely has some insider knowledge of Norwood's strengths as a gunner on special teams.

Norwood could be utilized the way Robert Mathis was when he first broke into the league. With several of the key offensive linemen gone by pick #31, the logical shift is to pass rushers. Norwood might be small in size, but his speed and relentless play will help the Colts improve their pass rush.

If it's deemed spam, it gets deleted.

O-Line or DB...

O-line is the obvious first choice for the Colts. (Love the Rodger Saffold pick in round 2 btw.) Even if all the OTs are gone in the first I might still like to see Maurkice Pouncey be the pick.

Failing that, I would look at the defensive backfield. Melvin Bullitt is not a long term answer IMO. We used to have this guy named Sanders who was a pretty good safety and it would be nice to find someone who can produce like that again. Chad Jones LSU might be a bit of a reach, but is a possibility. Also, could look at CB depth if Jackson leaves. There are about half a dozen CBs who would be in consideration here but I might go with Brandon Ghee or Perish Cox.

Colts

Other than Brackett, the Colts need to upgrade at linebacker. If you take Norwood, you should probably keep him at linebacker.

I mean to have Norwood at LB

The biggest hole in his game is one of the areas the Colts demand the most.

I see now

To me, the Colts have needs at DE, OL, and linebacker. During the Super Bowl, their linebackers didn’t make enough plays. While Norwood is not great in coverage now, that is a skill he probably could pick up in time. He is athletic and has a great attitude.

but why not just but him where his biggest hole is a non-issue

and his size (while it’d be a problem some places) is just fine for the particular scheme?

Norwood to me seems like a rich man’s Phil Wheeler, who while most Colts fans haven’t given up on him, he’s been disappointing so far.

My take on him is that he’ll be a better linebacker than defensive end. At linebacker he’ll be good all-around, eventually, with the additional advantage of being a great blitzer. As a defensive end, he’s just a defensive end.

Think that is a fair assessment...

He smells like a 3rd rounder who will be over drafted in the 2nd. I really don’t see the Colts looking LB before the 3rd or 4th round. OL, DB and DE are all much higher priorities. With a relatively deep DE class why both drafting a LB and trying to convert him?

We haven't drafted OT in the first round since 1997 either

So I guess that is out of the question too?

We can only go WR, DE, TE, CB or RB?

"It's the greatest job in the world until Peyton comes off the field and you think his thumb might be broken and there's three minutes left in the AFC Championship Game and you're down by three to New England and you haven't taken a snap all year. Yeah, it's a great job until that point." - Jim Sorgi

They haven't drafted a LB in the top 90 since 2000

I think that’s more telling that the 1st round stat.

Especially since they gave up a 1st rounder for Ugoh and had far far far more turnover at LB than at the tackles over the span we’re discussing.

Just as a note here

This projection and explanation was made before “real” word came out that the Colts wanted to bring back Brackett and before Dansby was not franchised.

Norwood would be too much of a reach.

Scientific research has proven that you lose exactly 5.37 billion brain cells every time you listen to Todd McShay.

How can they...

sign Karlos Dansby???? The Colts are in the same boat as the Vikes, Jets, and the Saints. You guys aren’t even allowed to speak to FA unless you lose one of equal value.

here's a link with Vikes VP talking about it...

He mentions the part about not being able to talk to FAs around the 8:48 mark.

if they lose Brackett they can likely sign Dansby

since they are offering Brackett a bunch so for him to walk away he’d have to be getting a ton, which would be enough to allow a Dansby signing.

yeah, I see that...

but BigBlueShoe is assuming you guys retain Brackett and can still get Dansby. I thought I read that the Colts were in the process of locking Brackett up.
