BUST-O-METER: Dan Williams
The NFL Draft is suppose to be a time where teams fill their rosters with young promising players that will ensure success in the future, unfortunately this isn’t always the case. Year in and Year out players are selected and fail to live up to their potential and are labeled BUSTS. These Busts could potentially have a crippling affect on a franchises future. Some of the more famous draft Busts are Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, Lawrence Phillips, and Ki-Jana Carter. How a bust is determined is too undefined to get into details about.
A prime example is the 6 straight losing seasons following the Bengals failure to develop Akili Smith into a capable NFL starter. Compare that to the 6 straight winning seasons produced by the Chargers after drafting Phillip Rivers in 2004. Of course these players are not solely responsible for their team’s success or failures but they did have a major impact.
After looking over the players projected to go in the first round I was amazed how many gave me an uneasy feeling. I am going to start a weekly BUST-O-METER and examine those players who I feel have the biggest red flags. I encourage that all the readers get involved and suggest potential busts of the week. You can email me by clicking the mail link by my user profile. I also encourage good conversation on the comment sections. Leave comments to help me feel better about a player or continue to add on the pile.
Player:
Dan Williams- DT- Tennessee
BUST-O-METER:
5 out of 10
Thoughts:
Dan Williams is benefiting from the draft process; his stock is on a continuous rise. Williams has the size and ability to play the coveted nose tackle position. The 3-4 defense has taken the NFL by storm and arguably the most important position in the 3-4 defense is the nose tackle. Teams need a big nose tackle with the ability to stuff the run and draw double teams. William’s draft stock has seen the effects of the nose tackle demand. I believe that Williams will be selected early in the draft which is what put him on my bust radar. While Williams shows ability he has no experience playing the nose tackle position. Williams should have a good career but is he worthy of a top 10 pick? The high expectations are what will be Williams’s demise. If he doesn’t develop into a Vince Wilfork, Casey Hampton, or Haloti Ngata he will be considered a bust.
Possible destinations (team needs) :
San Diego Chargers; Denver Broncos; New York Jets; Miami Dolphins

Not
going to be a bust i think. But instead just a rotational NT. He should go rd 2 and compete early in his career for top 2 on the depth chart.
Unlike JPP
Big Dan was a productive college player.
Like JPP, he may be going a bit earlier then he “should” (and I’d throw the NYG’s in there..I think he’s a possibility).
I don’t see it with him, I think he’s going to be solid (as with all prospects…baring injury of course)
He’s got a low floor and a high ceiling.

Suspiciously sounds like
another Tennesse d-tackle bust who goes by the name of Justin Harrell.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

THat's on the Packers for being idiots
why would you draft a kid who’s played in 3 games that year?? Packers got what they deserve that Harrell’s injury prone.

I’d slap Buffalo as a possible destination
I was born in Buffalo, and NO, it's not a suburb of New York City
How many DTs coming out of college have any experience at NT?
There aren’t that many college teams that use the 3-4 at all.

Exactly
“While Williams shows ability he has no experience playing the nose tackle position. "
This is always a point people bring up with Williams, and it’s frustrating because it didn’t stop the aforementioned NTs in the league today from becoming as good as they are. It shouldn’t be an issue when looking at a NT prospect.
It may may be more difficult to scout NTs and 3-4 LBs
but Williams isn’t really at more of a disadvantage than the other NTs that were 4-3 DTs in the past.
i love the bust-o-meter
and i think he doesn’t have the value of a top 20 pick but if he wouldn’t turn into some kinda wilfork, ngata or some of those guys, he wouldn’t be a bust, the team which selected him early will be the fool,
isn’t Dan’s fault
The NT is a premium position in the 3-4 defense
NTs are hard to find and they will get drafted early because of it (like LTs and QBs).

Kind of a confusing post.
You say he should “have a good career” but will be a bust too? Or are you saying some team will reach to get him? Reaching to get a player and being a bust are two different things. Doesn’t positional value have any implication on value?
Do you think he can play in a 4-3 scheme as a DT?
Cause I’M hearing the Jags might try to go after him? Because the success they have with Knighton (another NT who is good at 3-4 AND 4-3).
What do you think?

Depends on the 4-3
Williams would be a poor fit on the type of 4-3 where the DT’s play in a 3-technique all of the time. He’s not a Warren Sapp-type.
Certain 4-3’s do have one or both DT’s play in a 5-technique; they would be a good fit.
I think Jacksonville is trying to get away from having their DT’s play the 5-technique, so I don’t see the Jags as a good fit.
