Reports: Browns trade Brady Quinn, Kamerion Wimbley

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports is reporting that the Browns have traded quarterback Brady Quinn to the Denver Broncos.

In return the Browns will receive backup running back Peyton Hillis and two conditional draft choices.

Quinn became expendable when the Browns signed quarterback Jake Delhomme to a two-year contract on Saturday.

Denver selected Hillis in the seventh round of the 2008 draft. Hillis played in 14 games last season, rushing for 54 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries. He caught four passes for 19 yards.

Update: Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the picks are a sixth-round pick in the 2011 draft and a late-round pick in the 2012 draft.

Update 2: Adam Caplan of Scout.com and Sirius satellite radio is reporting that the Browns have traded outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley to the Oakland Raiders. In exchange, Caplan says the Browns will receive an undisclosed draft choice.

Update 3: Now that the dust is settling (and I've cleaned up after dinner), here's the low-down. Quinn wanted out of Cleveland and already sold his house. The fact that he wanted out wouldn't be the starter even if he was brought back had some negative affect on what the Browns could get for him.

Thus, Denver gets a steal by not giving up any picks in a deep 2010 draft. Further, perhaps Broncos coach Josh McDaniels thinks that he can do with Quinn what he did to Matt Cassel in New England.

The pick in the Wimbley deal may be a third, according to Chris Mortensen. Even though Wimbley was much-improved last season, that would be a solid trade for Cleveland.

Still, you have to wonder why these two were just given up on – especially Quinn. As a Browns fan, this should hurt. Instead, it seems to be business as usual with the team taking steps backward and zero forward.

I wonder if this might open up the possibility of them going after Kolb or McNabb? Both are better then Jake.

did they get a 2nd or 3rd round pick?

otherwise…I doubt it (and no….both those guys aren’t worth the Browns #1 even if they are better then Delhomme)

Eagles won’t settle for less then a 1st for either and it wouldn’t surprise me to see Kolb or McNabb go since Heckert thinks they are both franchise QBs

by The Legend on Mar 14, 2010 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Mcnabb is too old

and Kolb did less then AJ Feeley…who got a 2nd.

Are the Browns really dumb enough to give up a 1st rounder for them?

Eagles would probably have to keep both of them if they expect a 1st rounder…not nearly worth that.

Feeley played more then Kolb did but Kolb played way better then Feeley did. The only way the Eagles will trade Kolb is if they get a offer they can’t refuse so obviously with Cleveland whose GM thinks he is a Franchise QB they would have to give up the 7th overall pick plus more.

LOL!

yea right.

Kolb played in 3 games.

If Holmgren gives up a first round pick for Kolb…he should probably quite right then and there.

Kolb was taken at the top of the second round and has shown a lot in his limited time

why is so ridiculous that he would be worth a first rounder?

7th overall?

that’s the Browns pick. He’s seen the field for 3 games. Maybe the talent is there..maybe its not.

Matt Cassell actually produced, for 16 games, and went for a 2nd. If Kolb goes for any sooner then that…like I said, Holmgren should quit before he even goes any further.

That was probably the worst situation any 2nd year QB could of found himself in. He had no reps with the starters during the week and he had to go against one of the best defenses in the league.

Because the key to winning the Super Bowl was Brady Quinn and Kamerion Wimbley? You know a guy sucks when the entire fanbase is rejoicing over obtaining a fullback in exchange for a former first round pick.

Will that affect next year’s draft?

And is Delhomme the only QB left on the Browns’ roster? Srsly?!

not as much as one might think. it is not a guarantee that BQ ends up being a good player in the league. he might just end up a backup. I am guessing you never saw him play with the browns but he just looked completely flustered…sometimes he felt rushed and rushed throws when there was no rush…

I don’t think his value is much higher than this. He was traded to be a backup, not a starter. he might eventually get a shot to start, but that is why the picks are conditional…

plus peyton hillis is a great goal line back and 3rd down back b/c he can block and catch.

I think (at least to us at DBN) this was obvious. We had already mostly accepted quinn would be gone…or that he would just get a guy in the draft anyways.

by bross09 on Mar 15, 2010 2:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Holmgren is retarded its official

Even if he’s right about getting rid of Quin and Anderson he didnt it in all the wrong order. First he releases Anderson way too late, then brings in Wallace way too early; then by the time he gets to Quin its obvious he doesnt want him.

And what does he get for Quin? A fullback and a dirt pick in 2011. Hilarious.

by AirNorval on Mar 14, 2010 6:52 PM EDT reply actions

actually your analysis is hilarious.

How does he release DA too late? They tried to shop DA to maybe every team in the league but couldn’t get anything for him…so they cut him before he got a several million dollar roster bonus. I would say they cut him at the right time.

I don’t get bringing in wallace way too early. He brought him in for a great price. Wallace is a guy who knows Holmgren’s system and is a veteran.

And Quinn: he probably wasn’t sold on him from the beginning. I would say they got a solid deal for Quinn and probably wouldn’t have been able to get more. After the season BQ had, he had lost an enourmous amount of value.

you think a team would have given up more for maybe Jamarcus Russell (possibly b/c of the arm strenth)??? Probably not…

Hollmgren treats his players right though. I think he sent quinn into a situation where he would be most comfortable though.

I guess trading a player because he doesn’t fit your plans and completely sucked is just not treating them right?? I guess teams should keep all players that suck just to treat them right…you know what, lets not have bosses fire bad employees either…that wouldn’t be treating them right…

So did the Broncos get away with the Browns' lunch money too?

This is almost as unfair as getting Randy Moss for a 4th, or Wes Welker for a 2nd and 7th…

Oh. Wait. Broncos have a QB for the future and got him for almost nothing.

by Richard Hill on Mar 14, 2010 9:34 PM EDT reply actions

if you consider him a QB of the future. He might not develop into anything more than an average starter. At this point, considering BQs CURRENT value, and not his upside, it is a very good trade…even considering the upside and the possibility he becomes good, it is still solid.

You don’t trade/Draft specifically for upside either. it would have been honestly dumb for the Broncos to give much more up for him…it is the equivalent lets say the browns taking JPP…in both situations, you are grossly overpaying for upside and ignoring production.

Quinn

He had enough talent to be a 1st round draft pick. While he is not worth that, 7th is far to fall. The Browns showed no confidence in him, and when I watched last year the play calling for him was not much better than the Jets with Sanchez.

by ct17 on Mar 15, 2010 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

he made a lot of bad throws, and he does have a conditional pick attached that wasn't disclosed.

I agree sanchize was bad but BQs stats are a little misleading.

every once in a while he has a great game but then goes back to being either awful or just very mediocre.

Here are the 12 games BQ played broken Down:

3 Great Games (I define Great as at least a 90 QB rating and 2 TDs, and one of these games, his best, was against the lions…another was against the bad ’08 Bronco D)

No good/Mediocre Games Games (between a 90 and 75 QB rating…good, not great, but won’t hurt you usually)

3 Bad (Defined as being between a 75 and 55 QB rating…Bad. Might lose you the game, but most often won’t)

3 Terrible Games ( 55 to 30 QB ratio. Will likely lose you the game and hinder the offense)

3 Pitifully Dreadful Games (below 30 QB rating…just pull him out NOW!)

So, Brady Quinn had as many starts with a QB rating above 75 (which is mediocre) as he did below 30 (which is dreadful)

by bross09 on Mar 15, 2010 3:16 AM EDT reply actions

needs time

Quinn deserves no more, and no less, of a rating than “unknown”. He has not yet played 16 games, and not all consecutively. The back-and-forth with Anderson was a mess. Recent good first years by QBs like Flacco are the abberation rather than the norm. Quinn’s stats are actually similar to Peyton’s at a similar point in their careers.

by ct17 on Mar 15, 2010 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, he could use more time, or he could just have been overrated. Even when he was getting consistent playing time, he just looked bad against some pretty bad defenses.

another thing people, especially outside of cleveland, fail to notice is injuries. do you know how his last 2 seasons ended? On the IR. now both were different injuries but just b/c they were different doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be some worry about his durability. he did not even get hit that often in cleveland and our pass protection has been very good. however, he has constantly looked flustered and rushed.

I would say he deserves a rating of major disappointment, Now this rating, like all is tentative and subject to change. he could go on sucking or he could become good.
