2010 NFL Mock draft : Updated 03/16
1. St. Louis Rams: Sam Bradford QB, Oklahoma
Team needs: QB/WR/CB/DE/OLB
What the Rams need most is a QB. The word around the rumor mill is that they are enamored with Sam Bradford. So unless they trade for a QB, this pick isn’t going to change to Ndamukong Suh who would be the favorite if they do get a QB. Heading into an uncapped year means the Rams can dump Marc Bulger’s salary without any future consequences. They have a lot of holes to fill in the later rounds. They will need targets for whoever they get to play QB for them next season as well as LB’s and DB’s for a defense that was absolutely awful last season.
2. Detroit Lions: Russell Okung OT, Oklahoma State
Team needs: OT/CB/OG/SS/RB
Now that the mock draft community has settled on the rumor that the Rams will take Bradford over Suh, this is now the new top topic of discussion. Previously I’ve had the Lions taking Ndamukong Suh, who many feel is the best prospect in the draft as well as the best DT prospect since Warren Sapp, but with the signing of Kyle Vanden Bosch and the trade for Corey Williams the defensive line is just no longer a big need for them especially with last season’s emergence of rookie DT Sammie Lee Hill. The guaranteed money that comes with the second overall pick would also tie too much money into one area of the team if they were to select Suh here. What the Lions need most is someone to protect their 40 million dollar QB Matt Stafford so he doesn’t turn into the next David Carr or Joey Harrington. Regardless of the faith the team says they have in Jeff Backus they need an upgrade at the LT position, in which they could move Backus to LG or RT and get two upgrades for the price of one. Okung has distinguished himself as the top OT in the draft with a strong combine showing and would be a great addition to the Lions O-line.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ndamukong Suh DT, Nebraska
Team needs: DT/WR/DE/CB/SS
I’m sure the Bucs will be filled with excitement given they have Suh fall into their laps here which is highly unexpected. With Suh available I can’t see this pick being anyone else. If the Rams or Lions do take him this pick will revert back to Gerald McCoy. Trading back with a pick this high isn’t really much of an option as other teams will not want to pay the amount of guaranteed money expected to a top 3 pick. If the Bills, or more likely the Seahawks, value Jimmy Clausen high enough they would be the only ones to trade up with Tampa but it’s unlikely they would trade back with Suh on the board.
4. Washington Redskins: Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
Team needs: OT/QB/OG/OLB/OC
Regardless of whether or not you’re a Jason Campbell fan, the fact remains that this team is not winning with him. I know a lot of the problems are because of the injuries to the offensive line but the organization is going to want to start anew with someone like Clausen, especially now that Mike Shanahan is the new head coach. There is a perception that Clausen has an attitude problem, which has been greatly exaggerated by the likes of ESPN’s Todd McShay, that may influence teams from taking him early but I doubt come draft day that anyone would concern themselves with it. If they decide that they want to stick it out for another year with Campbell they will target Bryan Bulaga, Bruce Campbell, or Anthony Davis.
5. Kansas City Chiefs: Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa
Team needs: OT/NT/OLB/WR/Safety
Matt Cassell needs a LT that will give him enough time to throw the ball down field. KC spent a lot of money on Cassell and it would be nice if they got a return on their investment. It would also allow them to move 2008 1st round pick Brandon Albert to LG, his natural position, or RT since it doesn't seem like he can make it playing on the left side. Moving Albert to LG means they could slide Brian Waters to center and really solidify that line. If they are somehow still confident that Albert can play LT then this pick would change to Eric Berry or even Rolando McClain, but don’t count out Dan Williams. GM Scott Pioli puts a lot of faith into positional value which is why they went with Tyson Jackson over Aaron Curry last year.
6. Seattle Seahawks: Gerald McCoy DT, Oklahoma
Team needs: OT/DE/QB/DT/WR
Seattle needs an elite pass-rushing talent like McCoy, even if they need it more so from the DE position which is why Derrick Morgan may be an option here. If Okung were available they would probably go for him, but given Bruce Campbell’s injury history and Anthony Davis’ reputation as being inconsistent they will go for McCoy instead. They also have serious issues in the secondary so like many at the top half of the draft, Berry will come into play, but due to the low positional value of Safeties he will yet again slip down one more spot.
7. Cleveland Browns: Eric Berry S, Tennessee
Team needs: QB/FS/OLB/ILB/WR
Cleveland needs help everywhere except for LT where they have Joe Thomas. With Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen already gone at this point, they will have to wait until the later rounds if they plan on drafting someone to replace Jake Delhomme when he eventually wears out his welcome in Cleveland. They have lucked out in having Berry slip down this far. Berry is an Ed Reed clone and ran a 4.4 40 and posted a 43in vertical at the combine which can only solidify himself as a top player if there were any doubts. As long as he’s on the board I can’t see the Browns taking anyone else as they need someone to replace Brodney Pool who is seriously concussion prone.
8. Oakland Raiders: Bruce Campbell OT, Maryland
Team needs: OT/DT/CB/DE/OLB
Bruce Campbell secured this pick by measuring in at the combine at a stout 6’6” 314lbs., with 36 1/2in arms, and add to that 34 reps on the bench press and a 4.85 40. That’s enough to make undead Al foam at the mouth. Given Okung’s great combine if he manages to slip this far I believe the Raiders would take him, although given his great combine I doubt he would make it past Seattle. At this point I really can’t see anyone but Campbell being selected here unless Davis goes with Taylor Mays unofficial 40 time of 4.27.
9. Buffalo Bills: Dan Williams NT, Tennessee
Team needs: OT/QB/NT/OLB/ILB
Due to the grumblings about Anthony Davis’ poor combine interviews, and the greater positional value of a NT over an ILB like Rolando McClain, I went with Williams. He would fill one of their biggest needs, especially since they are switching schemes to a 3-4 defense. With the proliferation of the 3-4 over the last few years it’s not hard to see a NT overvalued somewhat, which is why B.J. Raji went so high last year. There’s also an outside chance they may pick Jason Pierre-Paul but it’s unlikely since they selected pass rusher Aaron Maybin in the first round of last years draft.
10. Jacksonville Jaguars: Earl Thomas S, Texas
Team needs: FS/OC/OG/WR/DE
The Jags young receiving corps has come on this year and as such seems to be no longer a dire position of need, although they due lack a true number one receiver in which case they make target Dez Bryant. Now that the team has signed Aaron Kampman DE has become a lesser need, as I’m sure they are still holding out hope that Derrick Harvey and Quinton Groves will pan out. Thomas would a replacement and upgrade over the extremely disappointing Reggie Nelson. There’s talk that the Jags are looking to save money so they may look to trade back with a team looking to get Jason Pierre-Paul, Rolando McClain, or one of the available OT’s.
11. Denver Broncos(via Chicago Bears): Dez Bryant WR, Oklahoma State
Team needs: WR/NT/OC/OG/CB
The Broncos have very few holes to fill as they have plenty of young talent that will develop over time but with the likelihood that Brandon Marshall will be in Seattle or somewhere else this coming season they need to draft someone that can be a serious downfield treat. They also need a NT, even though they signed the aging Jamaal Williams who at this point is only a stop-gap solution, but unfortunately Dan Williams is no longer available. Rolando McClain may be an option as they have cut Andra’ Davis but they still have D.J. Williams.
12. Miami Dolphins: Jason Pierre-Paul DE/OLB, USF
Team needs: OLB/WR/FS/NT/TE
Previously I had them choosing Dez Bryant, but given that he didn’t even participate in the combine drills and there is a perceived notion that like Anthony Davis he has a maturity problem and he’s no longer available, I’m going with JPP. Personally I think he has a high bust rate and have compared him to Vernon Gholston on many occasions as he too is a one year wonder and a workout warrior but with a great combine he has clearly shown that he has the tangibles to be an excellent rusher at the next level. Whether or not he can parlay those skills into actual results remains to be seen. With Dan Williams off the board they will have to wait to replace the 34 year old Jason Ferguson. The signing of Karlos Dansby makes it unlikely they will take Rolando McClain, although with the constant injuries to Channing Crowder it’s not out of the question. With the release of Gibril Wilson their need for a Safety will have to be satisfied sometime within the first 4 rounds.
13. San Francisco 49ers: Trent Williams OT, Oklahoma
Team needs: RT/SS/CB/OG/RB
I know this is a little high for a RT but it fills the 49ers biggest need. Williams is an absolute mauler and if he gets his hands on a defender it’s over. He was a pleasant surprise at the combine, showing more than expected athleticism and running a 4.88 40. The 49ers also need help in the secondary, especially with the troubles of Dre Bly, the aging of Nate Clements, and the concussions of Michael Lewis, so Joe Haden is an option but OT holds a much greater positional value for them here. They also need a pass-catching 3rd down back that can also return punts and kicks so C.J. Spiller is an option as well.
14. Seattle Seahawks (via Denver Broncos): Anthony Davis OT, Rutgers
Neither Walter Jones nor Sean Locklear can seem to stay healthy, with Jones recently announcing his retirement. The knock on Davis is that he doesn’t seem to give a 100% all of the time and he has some maturity problems, but he’s far too athletic and has too much potential for the Hawks to pass him up, especially give their dire need for OT’s. The Hawks may also look for a RB, especially since the electrifying Spiller is still on the board, but they should be able to grab Cal’s Jahvid Best, Georgia Tech’s Jonathan Dwyer, MSU’s Anthony Dixon, or Fresno State’s Ryan Mathews in the 2nd or 3rd round at a greater value.
15. New York Giants: Rolando McClain ILB, Alabama
Team needs: MLB/DT/RT/DE/CB
With the release of Antonio Pierce MLB has become a glaring need for the G-men. McClain is the top rated ILB with great leadership qualities. They also have needs at the DT position, especially with losing Fred Robbins to free agency and Rocky Bernard having a very underwhelming season, so Brian Price will definitely come into play. Given the Giants love for collecting pass-rushers Derrick Morgan will also be an option as he is a top-10 talent who’s managed to slip due to lack of teams in the top half of the draft that employ a 4-3 defense. In the 2nd or 3rd round I expect them to find a replacement for Kareem McKenzie.
16. Tennessee Titans: Derrick Morgan DE, Georgia Tech
Team needs: DE/CB/OLB/ DT/OC
Who would have thought that after a 0-6 start that Vince Young would salvage their season? They have multiple needs but Young’s play means they won’t be looking for a QB. Their biggest need is for pass-rushers are they were unable to get any pressure last season. Due to the lack of pressure the CB’s were exposed so they will need to make upgrades in the secondary as well. With top CB Joe Haden on the board they will give him serious consideration, especially if he can improve on his abysmal 40 time on his pro day. As already mentioned, Morgan is a top-10 talent who the Titans are happy to land due to the fact that so many teams now favor a 3-4 defense.
17. San Francisco 49ers(via Carolina Panthers): C.J. Spiller RB, Clemson
With Joe Haden still on the board the 49ers will give serious consideration to drafting him to replace an aging Nate Clements or an underachieving Dre Bly, but drafting Spiller would be a much greater value as he would serve as the pass-catching 3rd down back as well as a return specialist to replace the departed Arnaz Battle. He would also be a good insurance policy given Frank Gore’s injury history.
18. Pittsburgh Steelers: Joe Haden CB, Florida
Team needs: ILB/OG/NT/CB/DE
Some in Steeler nation will jump for joy to see Haden fall to them. He doesn’t fill any of the more pressing needs but with Dan Williams and Rolando McClain already off of the board he will be a welcome addition to a CB group that hasn’t had a premier player since Rod Woodson. Next offseason Ike Taylor will be a 30 year old free agent, and lasts years rookies Joe Burnett and Keenan Lewis both have potential but may only be solid #2’s at best. Haden has seen his stock plummet after running an abysmal 4.57 40 yard dash time. If he’s able to run a 4.4 or lower at his pro day he will see his stock climb again and will be unreachable at 18. At the combine GM Kevin Colbert stated that the team is looking at players from every position other than QB and TE. We managed to work out a long-term deal with Casey Hampton which means our need for a NT has diminished. Even still, Hampton is 32 years old and signed to a 3-year deal, so if Dan Williams were available he will be an option. Mike Iupati will also get some consideration, but even with the rag-tag group of O-linemen we had we still managed to have the 7th ranked offense in the league. The Steelers greatest needs are on the defensive side of the ball. Although they resigned Ryan Clark and the signed Will Allen, the Steelers still need to find a long-term solution at the FS position. Clemson RB C.J. Spiller would be a slightly long-shot option. Willie Parker is not going to be resigned and Spiller would be a great speedy compliment to Mendenhall for a lot less cost than Parker.
19. Atlanta Falcons: Sean Weatherspoon OLB, Missouri
Team needs: DE/OLB/DT/WR/Safety
The Falcons will take the best defensive player available, particularly an OLB or DE. The signing of Dunta Robinson means that CB is no loner a need for them. Weatherspoon is the top OLB suited to play in a 4-3 defense. He managed to impress everyone in the SB practices with his vocal leadership and enthusiasm. During the game he didn’t disappoint, playing sideline to sideline and showing very good man-coverage skills. At the combine he put up the second most bench press reps for a linebacker with 34 as well as the second best vertical jump of 40 inches. If they go the DE route, which would definitely be an option due to the complete bust that is Jamaal Anderson, Everson Griffen will come into play.
20. Houston Texans: Mike Iupati OG, Idaho
Team needs: CB/FS/OG/NT/RB
They need help in multiple areas, specifically on defense if they let the unhappy Dunta Robinson leave via free agency, and in the interior defensive line after sending former 1st round pick Travis Johnson to the Chargers earlier in the year. Without any of the top safeties, Joe Haden, or Dan Williams available, they will draft Iupati to help an offense that is completely anemic when it comes to picking up short yardage. The Texans could’ve won at least 3 more games this past season if they had a power running game. The Texans resigned Kevin Walter so WR isn’t much of an option for them anymore. They could consider Kyle Wilson or Devin McCourty but this draft is very deep at the CB position.
21. Cincinnati Bengals: Jermaine Gresham TE, Oklahoma
Team needs: WR/FS/TE/ILB/OG
The Bengals are blessed enough to not really have any dire needs so they can get best player available here. Their only real needs are for WR’s, especially after the release of Laveranues Coles, and Safeties. Outside of Chad OchoCinco, none of their WR’s had much of an impact last season. With Dez Bryant already off the board any other WR would be considered a slight reach. Their 3rd biggest need is for a pass-catching TE, which is something Carson Palmer has never had. Gresham missed all of his final college season with a torn ACL but he is the top TE in this draft class.
22. New England Patriots: Jared Odrick DT/DE, PSU
Team needs: OLB/DE/WR/TE/RB
After the Richard Seymour trade to Oakland, the Patriots defense suffered greatly. Odrick is a great 3-technique DT that has the size and strength to convert to 3-4 DE much like Seymour did when he came out of college. The Patriots also need more youth and depth in their linebacking corps. After losing Ben Watson and Chris Baker to free agency they will need to find another TE. Given how much the Patriots like to trade back, it would actually surprise me if they keep this pick, especially considering how deep the talent pool is in this draft.
23. Green Bay Packers: Charles Brown OT, USC
Team needs: OT/CB/Safety/OG/DE
The Packers have had to compensate for the lack of talent at OT by adjusting their scheme to keep TE’s in to block. Adding some OT depth would really help open up that potent offense. After losing Aaron Kampman to free they may consider Jerry Hughes and Brandon Graham who are both still on the board. Green Bay also needs to start looking at replacements for their aging secondary but will find better value for the in the next 2 rounds.
24. Philadelphia Eagles: Carlos Dunlap DE, Florida
Team needs: DE/OLB/FS/CB/OT
Look for the Eagles to take the top DE or Linebacker prospect available. They need to fill the DE spot opposite of Trent Cole. Carlos Dunlap has had his work ethic and love of the game questioned but he’s just the sort of big lineman that Andy Reid loves and perhaps Reid and others can get Dunlap to mature. They also need a replacement for the hugely disappointing Sean Jones as well as some O line depth.
25. Baltimore Ravens: Kyle Wilson CB, Boise State
Team needs: CB/TE/DE/WR/OC
With the newly acquired Anquan Boldin WR is no longer a dire need for the Ravens, although they may still look for one in the later rounds. Now the Ravens are free to take the best player available at CB given that TE Jermaine Gresham is already off the board. Wilson gives them the #1 corner they have been lacking since Chris McAlister. With Gresham, DE Jared Odrick, and the trade for Boldin I really can’t see this pick being anything other than CB except for maybe Brandon Graham if they don’t feel Paul Kruger can develop into a 3-4 pass-rusher.
26. Arizona Cardinals: Brandon Graham DE/OLB, Michigan
Team needs: OT/OLB/ILB/OC/NT
Arizona’s biggest need has been for a LT. They drafted Levi Brown a couple years ago but he has struggled on the left side. Now that Matt Leinart, a lefty, is at the helm with the retirement of Warner they may wait on a LT. OLB’s Haggans, Okeafor, and Berry are all 33 years old or older so they will definitely be upgrading with Graham who had a spectacular showing at the combine and SB, showing a variety of pass-rushing moves and looking a lot like Broncos OLB Elvis Dumervil. With the extra picks they acquired from Baltimore in the trade for Anquan Boldin I would expect them to package them with this pick to move up for one of the elite Tackle prospects.
27. Dallas Cowboys: Taylor Mays S, USC
Team needs: OT/FS/OG/NT/ILB
Without any of the big O-linemen left, they will have to draft Mays to replace an underwhelming Ken Hamlin. Taylor Mays has seen his stock soar and plummet over and over again. He takes poor angles in coverage which is definitely a cause for concern. Due to an unofficial 4.27 40 time at the combine his stock has seen a resurgence. They may consider speedster Golden Tate to play slot receiver because of his ability to stretch the field.
28. San Diego Chargers: Terrence Cody DT, Alabama
Team needs: NT/RB/DE/ FS/CB
The Chargers have two pressing needs, one for a NT to replace the Jamal Williams who was signed by the Broncos, and for a RB after the release of LaDainian Tomlinson. They still have Darren Sproles and the RB depth in this draft is deeper than the quality NT depth. Regardless taking “Mount” Cody is a bit of a gamble. He weighed in at an obese 370lbs. at the Senior Bowl but managed to slip down to 354lbs. by the combine, and even lost an extra 5lbs. by his pro day. His weight is always going to be an issue with the biggest fear being that after he receives an NFL contract he will have no incentive to keep his weight down. But he’s dominant 2-down NT who can engulf offensive lineman and NT is the most important position in a 3-4 defense. At this pick, if they don’t take Cody I can only assume they will take Ryan Matthews.
29. New York Jets: Jerry Hughes OLB, TCU
Team needs: DE/OLB/WR/FS/NT
With the Jets trade for Antonio Cromartie to play opposite Darrell Revis, their greatest needs become a DE considering Shaun Ellis is coming off of an injury and Marques Douglas is a free agent and both are 33 years old, and a rush linebacker. They go with Hughes to replace 1st round bust Vernon Gholston since Jared Odrick is already off the board. There’s also a slight chance they would draft Golden Tate to add weapons for Mark Sanchez.
30. Minnesota Vikings: Devin McCourty CB, Rutgers
Team needs: CB/FS/MLB/OG/DT
The Vikings will look to shore up the few weak points on a very strong defense. Current starters Griffin (torn ACL) and Winfield (Foot) are both nursing injuries. Before the combine McCourty graded out as a solid 2nd round prospect, but after running the fastest 40 time (4.34) of any DB and looking very fluid in the drills he’s managed to catapult himself into the number 2 CB slot. The Vikings could also consider FS Nate Allen, MLB Daryl Washington, or OG/OC Maurkice Pouncey. In the later rounds I expect them to draft a RB to replace Chester Taylor.
31. Indianapolis Colts: Brian Price DT, UCLA
Team needs: OT/DT/OG/DE/Safety
Without any cornerstone LT’s left, which is their biggest need, the Colts will focus on defense. I know the Colts do not typically invest early round picks on defense but it’s about time that they start. They are really lacking depth at DT and Price is a great 3 technique player. Like Derrick Morgan, Price is the victim of the proliferation of the 3-4 defense. They may continue the trend of drafting offense in the 1st in which case they would go for Maurkice Pouncey to shore up a weak point at OG where Mike Pollack was lacking all year. Now that they have resigned Gary Brackett, MLB is no longer an issue for them.
32. New Orleans Saints: Everson Griffen DE, USC
Team needs: DE/DT/OLB/Safety/OC
With an already formidable offense the Saints will look to upgrade a defense that was hot and very cold all season long. Their biggest need is a DE to replace Charles Grant. The Saints are lucky to have Griffen fall into their lap at the end of the 1st round. As long as he’s on the board I can’t see them going with anyone else. In the even that he’s gone they will go with a DT to pair with Sedrick Ellis or a FS to replace Darren Sharper who may sign elsewhere.
Round 2:
33. St. Louis Rams: Golden Tate WR, Notre Dame
Now that the Rams have their QB of the future they need weapons for him to throw the ball to.
34. Detroit Lions: Ryan Mathews RB, Fresno State
Kevin Smith had a serious ACL tear and may not be ready for the start of the season. They have greater needs in the secondary but with plenty of CB depth in the draft this is a BPA situation. Mathews had the best combine performance of any RB in my opinion. He ran a 4.4 40 and looked very solid in catching the ball.
35. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Damian Williams WR, USC
The Bucs need WR’s to help the progression of young QB Josh Freeman. Michael Clayton has been underwhelming so far in his career and Antonio Bryant is not going to be retained.
36. Kansas City Chiefs: Sergio Kindle DE/OLB, Texas
K.C. needs a pass-rusher to play opposite Tamba Hali and it would be a slight reach to take Cam Thomas here.
37. Washington Redskins: Maurkice Pouncey OG/OC, Florida
With a new QB in hand, it’s time to rebuild that ancient O line. Pouncey is versatile enough to play Center, Guard, or possibly even Right Tackle.
38. Cleveland Browns: Rickey Sapp DE/OLB, Clemson
After trading Wimbley to the Raiders they are now in desperate need of a pass-rusher.
39. Oakland Raiders: Jeff Owens DT, UGA
Jeff Owens did 44 reps on the bench press which makes him a steal in the second round in the eyes of the Crypt Keeper.
40. Seattle Seahawks: Arrelious Benn WR, Illinois
Instead of reaching for a DE they take a WR. If they sign Brandon Marshall this pick will change.
41. Buffalo Bills: Rodger Saffold OT, Indiana
The Bills need OT’s and pick up a prospect that showed off his great athleticism at the combine.
42. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (via Chicago Bears): Brandon Ghee CB, Wake Forest
He would be an upgrade and successor to Rhonde Barber, as well as make a formidable tandem with Aqib Talib.
43. Miami Dolphins: Nate Allen FS, USF
The Dolphins need a replacement for Gibril Wilson.
44. New England Patriots (via Jacksonville Jaguars): Koa Misi DE/OLB, Utah
Misi has been nothing short of spectacular this offseason, first at the Senior Bowl, then at the combine, and finally at his pro day.
45. Denver Broncos: Cam Thomas, NT, UNC
Jamaal Williams is nothing more than a 34 year old stop-gap that this point.
46. New York Giants: LaMarr Houston DT, Texas
A replacement for Fred Robbins who was lost to free agency.
47. New England Patriots (via Tennessee Titans): Rob Gronkowski TE, Arizona
The Patriots need a TE after losing two in free agency.
48. Carolina Panthers: Brandon LaFell WR, LSU
Team needs: WR/DT/OG/DE/OT
Now that Jake Delhomme is gone and Matt Moore will be the starting QB next season, they need someone to throw to besides Steve Smith. LaFell drops considerably due to a poor 40 time but is a solid possession receiver and a very underrated downfield blocker.
49. San Francisco 49ers: Vladimir Ducasse OG, UMass
Just the sort of big, run-blocking lineman Coach Singletary loves.
50. Kansas City Chiefs (via Atlanta Falcons): Chad Jones SS, LSU
Since they cut Bernard Pollard I can’t name a single safety on their roster without having to look it up.
51. Houston Texans: Chris Cook CB/FS, Virginia
They need DB help, especially since they let Dunta Robinson go.
52. Pittsburgh Steelers: Alex Carrington DT/DE, Arkansas State
He had an amazing Senior Bowl and combine and would continue the youth movement along the defensive front.
53. New England Patriots: Jahvid Best RB, Cal
Best would be the perfect fit for the Patriots pass-happy offense.
54. Cincinnati Bengals: Morgan Burnett FS, Georgia Tech
They fill their biggest need on defense.
55. Philadelphia Eagles: Daryl Washington OLB, TCU
The need to find a replacement for the recently cut Will Witherspoon.
56. Green Bay Packers: Kareem Jackson CB, Alabama
They fill their second biggest need for youth in the secondary.
57. Baltimore Ravens: Tyson Alualu DT, Cal
They find a replacement for Trevor Price. Alualu already has experience playing in a 3-4 defense.
58. Arizona Cardinals: Tony Washington OT, Abilene Christian
The Cards fill their need for OT help. Washington is a good tackle and hopefully for his sake teams will look past the fact that he’s a registered, although non-violent, sex offender.
59. Dallas Cowboys: Jamar Chaney ILB, Miss. State
Keith Brooking is 35 years old and Chaney has greater value than reaching for Jared Veldheer.
60. San Diego Chargers: Dexter McCluster RB/WR Ole’ Miss.
McCluster had a great week of SB practices, showing off his amazing speed and cutback ability. Personally I think this is a little high for him, but some team is going to view him as the next Percy Harvin.
61. New York Jets: Corey Wootton DE, Northwestern
Ellis and Douglas are both 33 years old, with Ellis coming off of an injury and Douglas a pending free agent.
62. Minnesota Vikings: Reshad Jones S, Georgia
He would be an upgrade over Madieu Williams.
63. Indianapolis Colts: Jon Asamoah OG, Illinois
The Colts need a replacement for Mike Pollack.
64. New Orleans Saints: Navarro Bowman OLB, PSU
Scott Shanle is a liability against the run.
Round 3:
65. St. Louis Rams: Amari Spivey CB, Iowa
This starts the defensive overhaul.
66. Detroit Lions: Darrell Stuckey SS, Kansas
Stuckey had an excellent combine workout and would pair nicely with Louis Delmas.
67. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jermaine Cunningham DE, Florida
They fill their huge need for a DE.
68. Kansas City Chiefs: Linval Joseph DT, East Carolina
They need an upgrade over Ron Edwards.
69. Oakland Raiders: Mitch Petrus OG, Arkansas
Oakland needs an OG and Petrus put up 44 reps on the bench press, which makes him a steal in the 3rd as far as Al Davis is concerned.
70. Philadelphia Eagles (via Seattle Seahawks): A.J. Edds OLB, Iowa
Chris Gocong is not suited to play in a 4-3 defense. Edds is a solid strong side linebacker.
71. Cleveland Browns: Dominique Franks CB, Oklahoma
They need a solid #2 corner across from Eric Wright. Franks has a nice size/speed combination.
72. Buffalo Bills: Jevan Snead QB, Ole’ Miss.
The Bills need to bring someone in to challenge Trent Edwards.
73. Miami Dolphins: Carlton Mitchell WR, USF
They lack a true #1 wide receiver. Mitchell is raw but had a great combine and has all the tangibles to be a solid WR in the NFL.
74. Jacksonville Jaguars: J.D. Walton OC, Baylor
Brad Meester is 33 years old and they could use an upgrade to create running lanes for MJD.
75. Chicago Bears: Marshall Newhouse OG, TCU
Team needs: OG/FS/ DE/DT/OC
They have a major need at LG.
76. New York Giants: Kyle Calloway OT Iowa
They need a replacement at RT.
77. Tennessee Titans: Patrick Robinson CB, FSU
Nick Harper needs to be replaced.
78. Carolina Panthers: Torrell Troup DT, Central Florida
They need youth and depth on the interior defensive front as well as a pass-rush presence.
79. San Francisco 49ers: Larry Asante SS, Nebraska
A replacement for Michael Lewis.
80. Denver Broncos: Matt Tennant OC, Boston College
A replacement for Casey Wiegmann who no longer fit the blocking scheme.
81. Houston Texans: Toby Gerhart RB, Stanford
This pick should be a given. They desperately need a short-yardage power back.
82. Pittsburgh Steelers: John Jerry OG, Ole’ Miss.
John Jerry would be the perfect fit for the Steelers power running game which they want to commit to this upcoming season.
83. Atlanta Falcons: Austin Lane DE, Murray State
The Falcons fill their second biggest need which is to replace former 1st round bust Jamaal Anderson.
84. Cincinnati Bengals: Mardy Gilyard WR, Cincinnati
Even after signing Antonio Bryant, they still need depth at the position. Gilyard is a hometown guy would be the perfect slot receiver.
85. Cleveland Browns (From Oakland Raiders via New England Patriots): Brandon Spikes ILB, Florida
Signing Scoot Fujita was a short-term solution. D’Qwell Jackson is also in the final year of his contract.
86. Green Bay Packers: Jason Worilds OLB, Va. Tech
They need a pass-rusher to play opposite of Clay Matthews.
87. Philadelphia Eagles: Major Wright FS, Florida
Sean Jones was a huge disappointment last year.
88. Arizona Cardinals (via Baltimore Ravens): Sean Lee ILB, PSU
They really need ILB depth, especially after losing Dansby to FA.
89. Arizona Cardinals: Donovan Warren CB, Michigan
They need CB depth and Bryant McFadden did not have that great of a first year.
90. Dallas Cowboys: Jared Veldheer OT, Hillsdale
He’s the kind of giant O lineman the Cowboys prefer.
91. San Diego Chargers: Perrish Cox CB, Oklahoma State
They need CB depth after trading Antonio Cromartie to the Jets.
92. Cleveland Browns (via New York Jets): Andre Roberts WR, Citadel
The Browns need a solid slot receiver. Roberts put himself on the map with a great week at the Senior Bowl.
93. Minnesota Vikings: Jonathan Dwyer RB, Georgia Tech
The Vikings let Chester Taylor walk in free agency. Dwyer had a poor combine which is why he’s slipped this far but would be a good value pick here.
94. Indianapolis Colts: Jason Fox OT, Miami
This may be a bit of a gamble given Fox’s knee injury, but if not for the injury he would be an early 2nd round selection. Fox is the type of lean, athletic lineman the Colts prefer and if his knee passes the physical he could become the franchise LT they’ve been missing.
95. New Orleans Saints: D’Anthony Smith DT, Louisiana Tech
The Saints find someone to pair with Sedrick Ellis.
Round 4:
96. St. Louis Rams: Dekota Watson OLB, FSU
They need a WLB to replace Paris Lenon.
97. Detroit Lions: Akwasi Owusu-Ansah CB, IUP
He would be a good #2 or nickel CB as well as serve as their top RS given that Dennis Northcutt isn’t doing very well.
98. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Demaryius Thomas WR, Georgia Tech
They continue to rebuild the WR corps to help their young QB.
99. Kansas City Chiefs: Jeremy Williams WR, Tulane
They can’t completely confident in having Chris chambers are their #2 WR.
100. Washington Redskins: Sam Young OT, Notre Dame
The Redskins are desperate for OT help. Young looked very good at the Senior Bowl and is the type of lean, athletic lineman Shanahan loves for his zone blocking scheme.
101. Seattle Seahawks: Montario Hardesty RB, Tennessee
They need better RB’s than Justin Forsett and Julius Jones.
102. Cleveland Browns: Myron Rolle SS, FSU
They need an upgrade over Abram Elam.
103. Oakland Raiders: Jacoby Ford WR, Clemson
Ford ran the fastest 40 at the combine, enough said.
104. Buffalo Bills: Eric Norwood OLB, South Carolina
The Bills need to a pass-rusher to play opposite of Aaron Maybin.
105. Jacksonville Jaguars: Tim Tebow QB/H-back, Florida
Yes I know. But in the 4th round there’s good value to be had, not in him so much as the number of tickets the Jags will sell because of his presence. If given enough time to sit and learn the NFL game he could become a good pro QB.
106. Chicago Bears: Daniel Te’o-Nesheim DE, Washington
Even with the signing of Peppers they are thin at DE.
107. Miami Dolphins: Jimmy Graham TE, Miami
By an unintended fluke I’ve managed to mock 4 players from the state of Florida to the Dolphins. They need a pass-catching TE. Graham is an excellent athlete who had a great combine.
108. Tennessee Titans: Perry Riley OLB, LSU
They need LB depth as they continue to rebuild their defense.
109. Carolina Panthers: Roddrick Muckelroy OLB, Texas
They need a replacement for SLB Na’il Diggs.
110. San Francisco 49ers: Taylor Price WR, Ohio
They need a slot receiver and Price is a little faster than Riley Cooper or Jordan Shipley.
111. Denver Broncos: Aaron Hernandez TE, Florida
Hernandez is a better fit for their offense than Tony Scheffler.
112. New York Giants: Willie Young DE, N.C. State
They need could use some DE depth.
113. Pittsburgh Steelers: LeGarrette Blount RB, Oregon
This is a little high for Blount, as he is rated as an early 5th round pick, but he most likely would not have been available when the Steelers pick again. If he interviews well he could be the short-yardage back the Steelers have been missing.
114. Atlanta Falcons: Riley Cooper WR, Florida
The Falcons need a solid #2 receiver besides Michael Jenkins.
115. Houston Texans: Mike Johnson OG, Alabama
Pair him with Mike Iupati and they will have the best young tandem in the league.
116. New England Patriots: Javier Arenas CB, Alabama
The Pats need a nickel corner.
117. Cincinnati Bengals: A.J. Jefferson CB, Fresno State
They need a replacement for Morgan Trent as the nickel CB.
118. Philadelphia Eagles: Joe McKnight RB, USC
Now that Westbrook is gone, McCoy is the starter. They need some depth behind him and McKnight would fit their West coast scheme.
119. Green Bay Packers: Anthony Dixon RB, MSU
They need depth behind Ryan Grant.
120. Ney York Jets (from Arizona Cardinals via Baltimore Ravens): Kurt Coleman S, Ohio State
They need to replace the recently traded Kerry Rhodes.
121. Arizona Cardinals: John Skelton QB, Fordham
They can continue to tout their confidence in Matt Leinart but they need someone just in case he doesn’t come through, or at least to challenge him.
122. Dallas Cowboys: Sergio Render OG, Va. Tech
Another big lineman the Cowboys will love.
123. San Diego Chargers: Vince Oghobaase DT/DE, Duke
Louis Castillo misses a lot of games.
124. Philadelphia Eagles (via New York Jets): Ed Wang OT, Va. Tech
They need O line depth.
125. Minnesota Vikings: Arthur Jones DT, Syracuse
If Pat Williams retires they will have a hole on the defensive front, and even if he doesn’t they still need depth.
126. Indianapolis Colts: Rennie Curran OLB, Georgia
If Curran were just a little bit bigger he would be a 1st round pick, as it stands now he’s a perfect fit for the Colts cover-2.
127. New Orleans Saints: Harry Coleman S, LSU
Even if they do resign Darren Sharper they still need depth behind him.

Nice.
Willie Young’s a good value in the 4th. Top 3 rounds are good too.
I still LOL!! at Antonio Pierce and Fred Robbins creating “holes” by leaving. The “holes” were there when they were still on the team….

Like where you're going
But I don’t think Asamoah’s a late second rounder. If Indy was going to draft a G that early, why not take Pouncey at #31? I’d rank finding an eventual replacement for Jeff Saturday as the team’s third or fourth most pressing need for this draft after OT, OG, DE and CB (and Pouncey addresses the OG need too).
Then you have Speivey at the top of the third, which is a little earlier than he’s projected. But I love him. He’s a great zone corner and would be a perfect fit on the Colts. If this were the situation, I’d have no problem with Pouncey at #31 and then Speivey at the end of te second. Fox at the end of the third is great value if he checks out prior to draft.

Colts
Would love Price there.
In the 2nd I’m not big on Asamoah, they add a starting tackle and all they really need is depth for the interior since one of the current OTs can kick inside to be big upgrades, but Worlids is the only one I’d really consider over him there.
If they don’t get Brown in the 1st or Saffold in the 2nd, I really want Fox in the 3rd. Good pick.
Curran’s a beauty of a fit and a great player for the 4th round.
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.
Any chance the Colts pick up another QB?
3 QBs on the roster – was that a Caldwell decision, or were they just getting ready to cut Sorgi and wanted to give Painter a year to learn? Nobody has said anything about this since Sorgi got cut.
I think they could pick up a vet and then carry 3
but I don’t see the point of carrying a rookie behind Painter.

Cowboys Draft
That would be pretty bad from a Cowboys prespective – Taylor Mays is exactly what the Cowboys don’t need. They’d probably take Pouncey in the first and either Stuckey or Reshad Jones in the second.
Giants
nice draft for them love the McClain and Lamarr Houston picks
Like Kyle Calloway would’ve rather had Jared Veldheer
Ok with Willie Young but would’ve had Arthur Jones which would be a steal in round 4

yea
looking at the way it fell, I’d rather go Corey Wooten (Tuck?) or Jermaine Cunningham in round 2 (who can back up at SAM too…love to get Cunningham on the team) and then Arthur Jones in round 4

I think Calloway is a much better prospect than Veldheer. Tackles that tall generally have a lot of trouble with speed rushers. And watching Calloway in the Orange Bowl I came away very impressed. When Derrick Morgan couldn’t get past Bulaga GT started lining him up on the other side but Calloway kept him in check every time.
Not McClain
If the Giants are going to take a MLB that high it should be the perfect situation. McClain is not. McClain would be switching positions to play MLB in a 4-3 which at the very least will retard his development. He is also very big to play the position at 6-4 259 and at his pro day ran the 40 in the 4.6 to 4.7 range. With the league getting so pass happy I don’t believe that is what the G-Men should be looking for. Also, McClain himself has said that he would be a better fit in the 3-4. Why shouldn’t we believe him?
Well..6"3 249lbs
and give me an athletically gifted dude at that size anyday.
McClain is a bit more athletic then a previous Bama MLB, Demeco Ryans…and McClain is 2-3 inches taller (that kinda sounds like a good thing).
The league is no more pass happy in 2009 then it was in 2007, when uh..you know happened. No team distinguished itself as a defensive powerhouse this year, for what ever reason (lotta injuries to teams like the Ravens, Steelers, Eagles and Giants..4 of the better defensive teams in 2008)
McClain said that he played in a 3-4 in college so he’d be more comfortable there. That’s fine by me. I don’t get the sense from him that he’s not a team player. I don’t think he’d buck at being the Giants MLB.
Give me McClain on my team anyday.

Overall a really nice job
still not sure the Bills would pass on Davis at 9(although as a Seahawks fan I hope they do)
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!
I try not to compare prospects with players already in the NFL, but Davis reminds me a lot of Jason Peters. He has all the athletic talent you could want in a franchise LT, but he just doesn’t give the effort on a consistent enough basis. I’ve read several articles that said Davis turned a lot of teams off during the interviews at the combine.
Not bad for the Vikings
but I would choose different players.
In round 1 McCourty is fine although I like Ghee better.
In round 2 I see the Vikings taking John Jerry before Jones. They lost Hicks to free agency and they are not going to wait until late in the draft to pick up some linemen that will just be OK. Jerry is a stud and can replacec Herrera in a year or two.
In round 3 I see the Vikings taking Tebow if he is still there. Something tells me Chilly the “QB Guru” will want to work with him.
In round 4 I would take Kam Chancellor.
I don't think
Demaryious Thomas falls that far.
Colts, Part Deux
I don’t like price at #31 with Pouncey still on the board. To me, he is exactly the type of player the Colts want on the new-look line, great football IQ with the athleticism to play G/C for Indy. Jeff Saturday won’t likely be resigned after his current contract runs out, so best to get a center now who can learn from one of the all-time greats at the position to insure there is no missed step at the transition.
With Pouncey in the first, I’d have no problem building more line depth with Asamoah or adding corner depth with Spivey, since both are good prospects.
I like Fox in the third, especially if he checks medically. Though I think it’s possible the Colts pass on LT this year and go with CJ until next draft. In that case, I could see going in-line blocking TE in the third.
Love Curran in 4th. Great value and a perfect schematic fit.

only average for Detroit
Your choices arent bad, but given your player selections, Id go Suh, Pouncey, Patrick Robinson, Hardesty
I would LOVE your draft...
Although I do like the Matthews pick in the 2nd round
Seahawks
1st round) Pretty Good
2nd Round) Safety and CB are bigger priorities than WR. We currently only have 2 Safeties on our roster (Jamar Adams and Jordan Babineaux). We also have a hole at CB opposite Trufant. Ken Lucas was brought in last year and will not be resigned. Josh Wilson is good at nickel, but is exploited by his lack of size when he plays every down. I would prefer Nate Allen or Brandon Ghee from your mock to Benn.
4) Hardesty is a good RB choice if Seattle doesn’t fill their 3rd RB slot with a FA like I expect them to do. I could still see them going after the other S or CB that they didn’t get earlier. Rolle would make sense. They could also go back to picking OLine and snag a OG like Johnson to solidify their hole at LG.
The Chiefs don't go LT.
We have a promising young LT and an average to above average RT. We also just Signed Lilja to a 3 year deal meaning we have 2 good guards. Weigmann is our center for this year and i expect us to draft a C to learn behind him. So if we draft a LT then we move Albert where?
The first 3 picks of the draft will be defense. Pioli loves him some defense.
I don’t expect Weigmann to impress anyone in training camp. Draft Bulaga to play LT, shift Albert to LG, and Brian Waters to Center. That would give the Chiefs a line on-par with anyone in the league.
Waters hasn't played Center since his rookie year.
You just assume that he will be able to step in and start this year and play better than Weigman who was a pro bowler last year?
The first 3 picks of the draft will be defense. Pioli loves him some defense.

I'm with you on this one, Jon
the “draft and move” strategy is NOT a good idea, IMO.
The Chiefs’ moves in FA send a clear signal that they ARE addressing the TRUE needs on the OL DIRECTLY… C, RG… They should draft for the OL… but NOT in the first round.
Also:
GM Scott Pioli puts a lot of faith into positional value which is why they went with Tyson Jackson over Aaron Curry last year.
I always hear people say this… but I don’t think it holds water… teams usually DON’T value non-pass rushing DEs in the top 5… Pioli took Jackson based primarily on NEED and FIT with the defense…. not “positional value”
Curry wasn’t an ideal fit for KCs defense, but Jackson was.
this year, I expect Pioli to draft the best defensive player that fits a position of need…
it’ll be Berry, McClain OR, he’ll reach for a NT, if he doesn’t think “his guy” will be there in the 2nd.
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB
Lions
I’m in the Suh mancrush camp so of course I hate the Okung pick with Suh available. Okung will probably be the pick so I’m trying to come around to acceptance.
I reeeeeeally like the rest of the Lions picks though. Getting Ryan Matthews in the 2nd would be a dream come true. I also think Akwasi in the 4th is a diamond in the rough.
I can't think of a good sig to put here
Okung
I really don’t see Okung being the pick, he’s not the game-changer we need.
No Okung
The Lions need a OG more than an OT. If Suh is there, I see them grabbing Suh and going OG in round 2 or later if they think they can get away with it.
For all the people that say Corey Williams makes the Suh pick improbable: Williams is 30 and is not a long term solution. They are not going to pass on the best DT in years because they have a 2-3 year stopgap in place.
Then Why Trade For Williams?
The way I understand it, in Schwartz’s defense the DT’s aren’t interchangeable. There is a NT and a 3-tech guy. If the Lions draft Suh, they have 2 guys playing the same position. I think the Williams trade assures that the Lions will go LT in the first round. The Lions need to improve the line in front of Stafford and there is more positional value at LT.
Because behind Hill at DT
We have a ham sandwich and the towel boy. There is need for depth and rotation.
You can grab Okung
and then see if Price or Odrick are there at 2-2…or maybe take a chance at Geno Atkins at 2-2 since he pretty much abused Iupati at the Senior Bowl.
Bears picks
I don’t see them taking a project at DE with such a glaring need at FS. Obviously, this could be spot on if they still address the back of their secondary in free-agency.
''I'm really not a Facebook or Twitter guy. I'm a prime rib and baked potato guy.'' - Sweet Lou
I have no idea what Oakland will do but I still don’t see them taking Jeff Owens.

jaguars needs(in order)
ILB/FS(depents on BPA at either position), DE, OC, OG, WR
We need a promising Inside LB, and a new FS. REGGIE NELSON YOU SUCK!!!
We need a new DE(or 2)Harvey and Groves are fails, so far, can maybe still becomegood players. Hayward lost his MOJO, and Kampman is more of a temporary patch(don’t get me wrong hes good, but he doesn’t have many years left( 2-6), at risk of another injury, HES GETTING OLD)
Brad Meester is getting old, need to start looking for a player, that can fill his position(hes the Jags’line’s foundation), a rookie that can be developed into a Brad Meester(prototype)
We need a new right Guard, Manuwai can be LG, he still got some fuel left in his tank, but no one any good at note for right gaurd
Our last year’s WR Core looked promising,, and maybe can develop into a dominat WR Core, but we will have to see, we don’t need another WRs this year, We have many wide receiverson our chart(Wilford also a WR if needed)
WR Chart(my opinion)
Sims-Walker
Osgood(if proven capable)
Thomas
Williamson
Dillard
Wilford
Hughes
Osgood(#2 if proves, i think he will)if he sucks williamson goes to 2 osgood goes to 4. If really bad Dillard goes to 4 and Wilford goes to 5 and Hughes to 6 Osgood to 7
Osgood has the time to develop, if he wants a WR spot he better be working his ass off training, in training camp, and OTAs
Disagree with the Cook and Gerhart picks
Cook isn’t worth a 2nd round pick. Franks would be a better choice.
Gerhart. The Texans failed on power running because their line sucked. Gerhart’s not a good fit. Hardesty fits the ZBS and can run with power.
Cardinals
Hit the needs pretty well. Could use a NT too but hey, you can’t draft 6 guys with 5 picks. When they announce compensatory picks the Cards should get another 3rd and can resolve that need also. Then again, they may lose a 3rd for QB Charlie Whitehurst. I don’t think they’ll try to trade up at all.
Afirm in part, remand in part
I like the idea of what the mocker did, but Tony Washington is a registered sex offender who nailed his 15 year old sister. The new era of Cards football would not tolerate someone like that and I sure as hell wouldn’t want him on the team.
Skelton is a great QB pick. I spoke about him ROTB a couple weeks ago. I think he would be a great developmental pick-up.
When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome again. True story.

and...
You dont have any skeletons in your closet? Sure his is probably worse than most but he was a kid and since then he has toe’d the line. A team will give him a chance and I doubt any team takes him off their board for something like that. Maybe a team wont take him that early but I doubt they take him off all together.

Skeletons in my closet?
Yup, I have those. I have two older sisters, though, and the thought of nailing either one of them disgusts me. I’m 30 years old now and this kid repulses me. I don’t care if he was just a “kid.” What he did gets someone “rolled up” in prison. The very idea of introducing a sick and sad individual like Washington into a locker room is scary. I would hope most people would be disgusted and treat him like hell.
I am sure a team will give him a chance, but I sure as hell don’t want it to be the Cards.
When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome again. True story.

And 16 is young....
…but you know better than to nail your sister.

phins draft
would upset me if it came as you have it. JPP would be a huge risk at 12 and Parcell’s wouldnt take a 1 yr guy over the 3 and 4 yr lbers in draft
3 new 2010 starting LBers via 2010 draft
Confidence breeds success, self-doubt breeds failure
exactly JPP could just be a flash in the pan
I find it funny tho that the Phins are taking 3 USF players with their 1st 3 picks
Rams
other than the first pick I would hate this draft for the Rams.
Cowboys picks are not good
And for any future mocks anyone might make, don’t put Mays in there because that’s not happening.
to make the jump to the next level, Odrick said today he needs to work on one area. "Just being more violent overall,'' Odrick said. "Play the game and play it right, violently.''
Why not?
They need safety help and Jones loves safeties that are physical and fast. Because you dont like him?
