Bust-O-Meter: Dez Bryant
BUST-O-METER
The NFL Draft is suppose to be a time where teams fill their rosters with young promising players that will ensure success in the future, unfortunately this isn’t always the case. Year in and Year out players are selected and fail to live up to their potential and are labeled BUSTS. These Busts could potentially have a crippling affect on a franchises future. Some of the more famous draft Busts are Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, Lawrence Phillips, and Ki-Jana Carter. How a bust is determined is too undefined to get into details about.
A prime example is the 6 straight losing seasons following the Bengals failure to develop Akili Smith into a capable NFL starter. Compare that to the 6 straight winning seasons produced by the Chargers after drafting Phillip Rivers in 2004. Of course these players are not solely responsible for their team’s success or failures but they did have a major impact.
After looking over the players projected to go in the first round I was amazed how many gave me an uneasy feeling. I am going to start a weekly BUST-O-METER and examine those players who I feel have the biggest red flags. I encourage that all the readers get involved and suggest potential busts of the week. You can email me by clicking the mail link by my user profile. I also encourage good conversation on the comment sections. Leave comments to help me feel better about a player or continue to add on the pile.
Player:
Dez Bryant- WR- Okla. St.
BUST-O-METER:
7 out of 10
Thoughts:
Dez Bryant plays a prime position where many teams are in search of the next big playmaker. While at Oklahoma State Bryant showed is ability to make plays all over the field. One of Bryant’s best attributes is his ability to stretch the field with the deep ball.
The problem is that Bryant has several character red flags. NFL teams are dealing with an upwind of players being suspended for off the field issues. In many cases these suspension devastate teams by leaving big holes in lineups. This also may cost several executives jobs because using a high draft pick on a questionable character only to have them get suspended doesn’t look good on a resume. Determining character issues can be tricky because sometimes players get a bad reputation but other times the reputation is justified.
Another problem Bryant faces is the fact that the wide receiver position usually has one of the longest learning curves. Bryant also faces an issue because he didn’t play in a pro style offense that required him to run pro style routes. Bryant will face an adjustment period.
I think the character issues coupled with the adjustment period makes Bryant a high Bust candidate. What if he struggles with his adjustment to the NFL will those character issues limit his ability to work through the problems?

Agreed, his attitude can be controlled by a good coaching staff that can guide him in the right way

Yeah this is retarded
You only have to watch him play one game and you know he’ll be great. Will be one of the best WR in the NFL

Definitely disagree with this
Actually..given Bryant’s concerns…there is a likely chance he goes to a team with an actual QB where he could fit in right away.
Not trying to sound like the cliche Bengal hater..but if Dez goes there with Carson and Ocho…watch out. Maybe even Houston with Schaub and Andre.
Dez character concerns, actually DECREASED the chance he’ll bust, cuz it will drop his draft stock and drop him to a better team.
Master of the squeegee
Let Joe Flacco throw him some bombs, and you will not see a bust.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Love that thought
Bryant has very low bust potential. No, he did not run the route tree in college but he is so freakishly athletic and can make a contribution with smoke and bubble screens or 7 yard stop routes in a scheme early or tell him go deep young man, go deep. Having said all that, I wouldn’t take him until the second round even though I know he’s a first round talent.
You know, when I look at this guy, I just can't shake two words out of my head

Low Blow!!
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
Alex Smith is not a bust, he is a product of poor management and coaching.
Dez is way better than Rashaun
at football.
As a person, it is hard to find a better guy than Rashaun. He and his brothers were class acts at O State while I was there.

What character issues are there?
Seriously though. Besides being suspended for a year for being “tutored” by Deion Sanders, what exactly did he do wrong? Fiirst of all, a year suspension is rediculous, what “up and coming future star” would say no to Primetime when he offered to take them under his wing? It’s not like he is a gang-banger or used illegal drugs, he was a star struck kid who was looking for some mentoring from one of the all time greats.

Theres been rumors of him being lazy and things like that and he was arrested for selling drugs but that was when he was like 9, but other than that the character issues have been overblown.
9?
Who buys drugs from a 9 year old?

Love that stand up special

I think he'll drop, but not low enough for
the Texans to draft him.
Hopefully, he’ll be able to go to a team with a good coach who can help him be a productive player.

I dont think the Texans would draft him. They just re-signed Kevin Walter and they already have Jacoby Jones, David Anderson, Andre Davis and of course Andre Johnson.
True, true. We have more holes to fill
such as CB, OL, DT, and FS. But, a guy can dream, right?

Suggestion
Florida DE Carlos Dunlap looks like a prime candidate for this series…
I try not to get too carried away with character concerns..
after all, isn’t that the reason why Randy Moss slipped in the draft all those years ago?

There's some serious smoke being blown, IMO
While at OSU, he never had any publicized incidents, until the lying to the NCAA investigator deal.
All the red flag issues have seemed to crop up recently, like since the combine, and suspiciously there is a lack of 1st rd WR talent. Coincidence?
If your team drafts him you should be happy camper.

Didn't Crabtree come out of a spread system with no route tree typical patterns?
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
None of these wide receivers in this draft look good to me at all. Tate is going to be very iffy, and Bryant will have some struggles not with just adjustment, but also with missing a whole year’s worth of real football.
I’m glad my Raiders are so log-jammed at receiver that we don’t have to worry about getting one, cause none of them look like “the next big playmaker”
