Strange private workouts scheduled

Some private workouts make sense – Atlanta bringing in Sean Weatherspoon, Minnesota checking out cornerback Chris Cook. Others, though are a tinge odd. Here are a few of those:

Dez Bryant will reportedly be brought in for a private workout with the Dallas Cowboys. This is exceedingly odd considering Dallas has the 27th overall pick and Bryant should be the first receiver selected. Even though Bryant was suspended a majority of the 2009 season and sat out the combine, he should be gone by the time Dallas picks.

It makes sense that a team like New England is going to bring in Tim Tebow. However, it's kind of puzzling when Buffalo, Seattle and Cleveland are as well. New England can afford the risk, to a degree. The other three have so many issues what would going after Tebow get them?

The Bears have no picks in the first two rounds. So when their pick comes around, they have to get it right. So what is Chicago doing? Working out a long snapper.

Running back Ryan Matthews has been generating a lot of buzz since the season ended. So it's kind of odd seeing that the New York Jets and St. Louis Rams have scheduled him for a workout. The Jets just signed LaDanian Tomlinson and the Rams have the ever-dependable Steven Jackson. Given that teams are allotted only 30 private workouts, why a running back?

So just remember, perceived team interest doesn't always equate to actual NFL Draft interest. But if you see an interesting private workout, feel free to post about it in the FanShots and I might feature it.

I disagree with part of that Dan.

Buffalo, Seattle and Cleveland are all looking for a long term solution at QB. None of them really wants to trade up to # 2 or # 3 to get one of Clausen/Bradford, but may very well be interested in Tebow at their second or third round pick if possible. Yes, those teams have other issues but they still need to figure out a solution at QB. Tebow could be a low cost/high return option. I would not be surprised if these guys also looked at Jevan Snead, Jarrett Brown, or Colt McCoy.

But should Buffalo, Seattle or Cleveland use a second or even third on a chance?

If it helps them sell tickets they should think about it; plus I think Tebow will fall farther then that.

I don’t think any of those teams have trouble selling tickets, though. Besides, how interested are Seattle fans in Tim Tebow?

Im not sure anyone is really interested in him

Besides maybe the media and his disciples in Florida. When he starts turning gatoraid into beer, they we can talk about him being a 2nd day lock.

Cleveland has a batch of picks this year, twelve I think. They can afford it.

The Browns have Delhomme already to start the season. Seattle has Hasselbeck, and Buffalo…….well they still have Edwards and Fitzpatrick. I doubt these teams would use a second, except for Seattle, but an early third is worth the shot for the Bills and Browns.

I’m not suggesting they just take a shot, I’m saying if they give these guys a close look and decide that there is something here that in a few years could be a very good QB then it is worth the risk.

I think they would be thinking

high risk/high reward. Most third round picks dont have a lot of upside, and are still a risk.

Yep

The Seahawks need a QB, Bradford/Clausen might not be available at #6 and you have to check out all of the second-tier guys just in case.

I don't put any stock into who the Colts workout

they took Anthony Gonzalez in the 1st round after not even talking to him through the whole draft process.

The Chargers under AJ never actually take top picks they workout

Its kind of a joke where if the team shows interest we automatically know its going in a different direction.

The Rams

do have a need at RB. 2 back systems work well in the NFL and I wouldn’t mind it if Steven Jackson could share some of the beating with someone else.

by Toddius on Mar 18, 2010 3:52 PM EDT reply actions

But does the need reach all the way to their second round pick?

30 private workouts?

Thanks for giving me that information. If used correctly I would think a team might look at 5 guys for the first 3 rounds. How you use the other 15 is beyond me but I guess smokescreens have to be set.

But Dan. Lets say a team values Tebow as a sure fire winner but a two year project. Wouldn’t all of the teams you listed be crazy not to take him with a high third round pick? as much as I have reversed myself and become a Tebow naysayer I really think somebody is going to bite in round 2 or high 3. There is a lot of upside.

But for the Vikes I don’t think we can do a project of his length right now.

but he can trade up 4 or 5 spots if he slips...

Probably smoke though, but still, stranger things have happened than Dez Bryant at 21.

I have noticed a new resurgence in Cowboy hating in 2007, which can only mean one thing- We're back.

Makes sense to me

All of these workouts make sense considering teams can trade their picks. Nobody is locked in to their drafting position.
