Time to rethink Taylor Mays' 4.43?

Eh, this is all in fun. But maybe Taylor Mays ran faster than a 4.43 40-yard dash today. Still, he's slower than Jacoby Ford.

Seriously, though, wasn’t it weird that there was such a big difference between the official and the unofficial times? Carroll reportedly clocked him at 4.19 and a few scouts hand-timed him at under 4.3 seconds.

by ninjasocks on Mar 2, 2010 10:15 PM EST up reply actions

definitely was.

He’s ridiculously fast.

Still wouldn’t take him till the 2nd round. This does nothing for his stock IMO. Everyone who had a clue knew he was gonna light up the combine.

It was constantly said he can run a 4.3…and some of the reactions to it are quite laughable. I guess no one really believed him all along that he runs a 4.3.

i'd agree with a 2nd round value

but you know he wont be there….All it takes is for one GM to salivate over that size/speed combo and pull the trigger…

my guess is Oakland trades back into round 1 to take him after taking Bruce Campbell with their original #1. (lol (dk if its even possible after the seymor trade)

by NYG_Slater on Mar 2, 2010 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

Al doesn't trade back,

but it may be possible they try to trade up if Mays falls to get him late in the second round. May also depend on if they can move Huff as part of the deal.

*I meant late in the first round...

as opposed to the second round.

Is that Nolan Carroll?

So how does Holliday run a better time than Mays, yet Mays finishes ahead of him in this video? I think people are jealous they hated on him so much before that they do not want to admit he can run in the 4.3.

It's a ploy to drive Al Davis crazy

Mays or Campbell. Mays or Campbell. Right now is a good time to get all the rest of his picks from him. The Rams could get the Raiders second through 7th rounders for the next 2 drafts.

People are saying this guy is 2nd round talent are nuts

I dont like Mays that much, but considering this guy is basically an instant three down player on defense, that alone makes him a first round pick.

Could play SS in base then switch to weak side LB in nickel, heck Id even have him as the mike in dime.

by AirNorval on Mar 3, 2010 1:49 AM EST reply actions

how is he a 3 down player if he can’t cover?

this weak side LB stuff is the talk of a project player. In the 1st round I’d rather not take a project player.

Hence..2nd round (I wouldn’t take him on the Giants till the 3rd…)

No

This this “weak side LB” stuff is the talk of a safety with LB size. The guy is hardly a project man, he’s a four year starter at USC and has all the physical tools and size.

by AirNorval on Mar 3, 2010 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

He's got tools and size

but his skills are pretty bad. He can’t cover to save his life and he doesn’t even tackle all that well. Unless he’s played as a straight-up SS, he’s going to be a high-upside project.

by ninjasocks on Mar 3, 2010 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

exactly. He’s a project.

He hasn’t played LB in 4 years.

And just cuz he played 4 years at USC doesn’t make him a sure bet to start right away..nor would it matter if he was a 2 year redshirt sophmore (like Earl Thomas).

If your skills are suspect, your skills are suspect. Which Mays’ skills are.

He’s got physical tools and size..no one doubts that. He may have played 4 years..but he regressed under Carrol…that’s a big red flag.

It really depends on how a team wants to use him

Some teams will use their SS to help at the line of scrimmage and not spend a lot of time in coverage. Those types of teams would have no reason not to see Mays as a top 15 guy.

I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

Who cares if he hasnt played LB in 4 years

A safety in the box and a LB arert very different at all. Its not like the guy is trying to go play basketball now.
I personally think he’s overrated and overhyped, but I doubt he drops out of the first round.

And of course the guy didnt look like a shut down corner in ball drills at his size.

by AirNorval on Mar 3, 2010 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

He played LB in high school, in Seattle

He moved to Safety at SC because of the glut they had at LB ahead of him. Putting him back at Mike wouldn’t be the huge project it would to most safeties

With that speed

He at least will be able to catch most WR’s after the reception!
