NFP writer rips draft sites: A response

Agent Jack Bechta decided to go out of his way to rip into what he refers to "so-called draft gurus" in his latest for National Football Post.

Obviously, as someone who writes a little bit about the NFL Draft online, this caught my attention.

Full disclosure: SB Nation is now a partner of some sort with NFP.

Bechta, who represents Al Harris, Tyrell Johnson, Eric Steinbach and others, called out draft sites based mostly on a lack of access.

He asks what draft writers have access to game tape, write about the draft full time, have real NFL experience or interview hundreds of players.

Invariably, the answer to each of these questions, and the others he poses, will be no. Other than a handful of people, those who write about the draft online do not get the luxury to that access.

So it’s a fair enough argument from Bechta. But what exactly gives Bechta the authority to write for a national Web site, particularly on this subject?

Star-divide

So you have to ask the following when reading something Bechta writes:

- Is writing his full-time job?

- If he weren’t an agent, would he really be able to write for NFP?

- Did he really research this topic before just ripping into people who probably do it for minimal or zero pay?

- Does Bechta own a dictionary?

- Did Bechta really pass his English composition 101 course in college?

Now, these last two are a little below the belt. Sorry, Jack. But the following comment he posted begs those questions:

"The point of the article is that once you get passed the first round…"

Their, they’re, there. To, two, too. Your, you’re.

Passed. Past.

(Note: I’m aware you’ll find spelling and grammar errors on this site. However, you won’t in a post where I’m questioning a random person’s abilities.)

Bechta does himself a disservice his comments on the post. He writes, "Furthermore, a draft expert can not be judeged/graded until 3 years after the draft anyway."

What a perfunctory statement, grammar snafus aside. Perhaps Bechta was just towing the company line, but he goes out of his way to tout NFP draft writer Wes Bunting. I don’t know Bunting and have never spoken to him. I like his work, though. But to my knowledge, Bunting doesn’t have Bechta’s three years of experience required before judgment can be cast. Also to my knowledge, Bunting’s only experience is thanks to paying for an online course that anyone can take.

Besides, could Bechta’s cohort at NFP answer yes to all those questions he posed? Undoubtedly, the answer is no.

The point here (and there may be one), is that the majority of people who write about the draft do it for fun. Since I cannot speak for all of them, I will only speak for myself.

I write about the draft as a hobby. Even though I have a very personally rewarding full-time job, this is what I enjoy in my free time.

Do I watch game (or coach’s) tape? No. It is too much of a hassle to even ask athletic departments for it.

Do I go to the NFL Scouting Combine, pro days or the NFL Draft? No. However, if I wanted to, I could.

Could I be interviewing players? Absolutely.

Knowing these facts, you can continue following this site if you want. However, I don’t do this for traffic. I don’t do this to make money (Disclosure: I’ve made a grand total of $25 writing about the draft). I don’t do this to buddy up with players or agents. I don’t do this with the hopes of becoming a professional football scout.

I do this for fun. If you read it, great. If you feel so strongly about something I write that you comment on it, I love you.

So regardless of what Bechta or anyone else wants to think, this draft site won’t cease. We'll continue putting out mock drafts. We'll continue offering player analysis. We'll continue directing the most interesting news your way.

So if some player wants to take what is written here, or at any other draft site, as the gospel, perhaps his agent isn’t doing a good enough job of tempering expectations.

Overreaction

I think that article was an overreaction to Bechta’s column . If you read what Bechta wrote, his audience is clearly players who are being overhyped by us amateur mock-drafters. He wants those players to not hold a draft party with all of their friends and relatives, and then come away not even drafted and left disappointed.

Time to jump on line and see where the draft pundits are rating them. If they aren’t doing it, I guarantee you their father, brother, girlfriend and/or buddies are. This can be dangerous since it sets false expectations.
There’s nothing worse than a prospect having a party on draft weekend and his name never gets called. What was supposed to be one of the most celebrated days of his life turns into one of the worst – all thanks to false expectations and the so-called draft gurus.

I don’t think Bechta was saying that us amateur “draft gurus” should stop doing what we’re doing. It’s just that we don’t have the info that the pros have, and the real people whose lives are dramatically affected by the NFL Draft should not put great stock in what we say. If they listen to anyone, it should be their agents. It’s a fair point.

why?

because the pros are so right all the time?

the more info the better. if there are 50 sites, and some say a player will get drafted and some don’t, then the player has some idea that there’s no sure thing. if there are just a few “pro” sources that say he is going to get drafted, then a player is likely to put all his hopes on a limited amount of info — info that is just as likely as not to be wrong.

I agree with medicineball to some extent.

U Bechtya’s (sic) column is a warning to prospects and their families, but he is also questioning the entire Mock Draft “industry”.

The bottom line for me is that this is something that is done for entertainment. There is no science to this process, and no way to accurately project how a single player will turn out as a pro. If the point is just to predict what teams will draft at certain spots, then it comes down to inside sources and educated guesses based on a dozen different reasons. When I mock, I try to become the GM and select the player that I think best meets the team’s need and is a good value at that point. Us amateurs basically form our opinions from what others have written/posted and what we have seen ourselves. We have our own collection of biases that also impact our final thoughts, which I think is ultimately true of the NFL scouts and pro Draft Gurus too.

In the end, it is just done to have something to talk about in the off season. Nothing more, nothing less.

The Mock Snafu

I have a tremendous amont of respect for Betcha. He and Professer Boland do a terrific job of talking with their audience and NOT AT them which is a prerequisite (for me). That said, it is his responsibility to ensure that his clients are “protected and shielded” from possible disappointment by the various Mock Draft around the Net.

Now let me tell you what I really think. First , Dan you do one hell of a job! I appreciated it and this site forces me to re-evaluate my thoughts and opinions if they differ and that’s a good thing for me. Secondly, I don’t really care for the opinion of Betcha about what another site is doing. If I have opinion on something done over at the NFP would it be taken seriously? Hell no. I not a fan of a few of the guy’s over there at NFP. Some over there seem to more interested in protecting NFL relationships (Lombardi) as opposed to telling fans what needs to be heard about NFL teams and personnel. The NFL is a billion dollar business and I see this “concern” by Betcha (from Lombardi and Andrew Brandt who run NFP) as an attempt to curtail flow of information by putting down others.

ha

Football is not rocket science, as much as some people want it to be. You don’t need coaches tape with a thousand angles to determine if a player is a good. All you need to do is watch the game and have some knowledge of the rules and the technique. If you need coaches tape to determine if Tony Romo or Adrian Peterson are good players then you have some issues.

I do like Todd McShay, the NFP’s Wes Bunting/Michael Lombardi

Telling Sign:

Not only does he come out with his liking of McShay (and none for kiper) but he praises 2 guys that work ON the website he is writing on. Yep. unbiased. And lombardi is usually wrong anyways.

He also praises Mayock who I am not a huge fan of either. He does in a comment say he likes Jeremiah, but not in the article…

i know he has been involved in it for a while working for others in the industry. furthermore, he has been closely tutored by 23 year vet lombardi as well. His 2009 mock (some lombardi influence) was used in several war rooms last year as a guide as to what other teams might do. YES, NFL do teams use mock drafts. GMs i talk to love his work. for the record, I am a bit biased as the guy does have natural talent and work ethic.

I just wanted to say

I love the site and I’m glad you write it. Lots of great content. One of my faves. Keep it up.

Everytime we talk about the draft, the NFL wins. They get more interest and viewers. NFP does nothing good for itself by telling us to stop talking about football. The more we care, the more traffic they get.

I don’t care if some college player gets his feelings hurt if he’s not drafted. That’s one of the last things on my mind.

These kinds of sites are not for the players, coaches, and FOs...

If they are looking at these sites…no offense…they are idiots. They do have more info!

These sites are for fans! We love football and this kind of thing keeps us going in the offseason.

This Bechta guy just needed something to write about. And now he looks kind of dumb!

Bob Sanders is starting to make me rethink my SBNation ID!
