2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 3
The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft is underway, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. Niko Houllis, lead blogger at SB Nation's Tampa Bay Buccaneers blog, Buc 'Em, checks in to make the third overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!
With the third overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have selected Gerald McCoy, defensive tackle, Oklahoma.
Niko Houllis says: The Choice of Gerald McCoy is a simple one. The Bucs were worst in the league against the run last year, and have not consistently rushed the QB since the departure of Warren Sapp in 2003. With head coach Raheem Morris a member of the defensive coaching staff since the Super Bowl years, he began running the defense in the same one-gap system the Tampa 2 always has used last year after Week 10. He will continue to run the defense in 2010, and McCoy is a perfect fit, as he is a three-technique DT who can line up on the guard's shoulder and penetrate into the backfield like Sapp used to. Pressure from the front four only without blitzing is a requirement of the Tampa 2 system.
Mocking Dan reacts: The same explanation given for Detroit could be given for Tampa Bay. The team needs defensive line help, and McCoy should quickly become a starter. McCoy does have some similar playing traits to Sapp. But it's his mental makeup that is so impressive. He won't go to Tampa with a big head and is a true team player.
Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Eric Berry/S/Tennessee, 2 - Russell Okung/OT/Oklahoma State, 3 - Rolando McClain/MLB/Alabama, 4 - C.J. Spiller/RB/Clemson, 5 - Derrick Morgan/DE/Georgia Tech
Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of the McCoy-to-Tampa pick? Please be sure to check out Buc 'Em for all of your Buccaneers needs.

Bucs have basically the easiest choice of em all
Suh, McCoy or Berry would all be fine picks, and its impossible for them to not get one.
Agree with McCoy tho, if you have a choice you go for the trenches.

As long as Bradford and Suh go where they go.
If the Rams go with Suh, and Detroit takes McCoy for their DT need, then the Bucs do actually get in a situation to trade down.
While S Berry may appear to be a no-brainer, what could happen is that the Bucs will get a few teams drafting after Washington eager to trade up. After all, in this alternate scenario QB Bradford is still on the board. Washington could well take him: QB-needy teams like Seattle (yes they do) and Cleveland (oh yes they do) may want to skip ahead of the ‘Skins to secure best-available QB on the board (is Clausen really worth a top-10 spot?). It all depends on what a team can offer to the Bucs (maybe Seattle’s two First Rounders, maybe a mix of First, Third, and Fifths from Cleveland) that would work.
The only risk of trading down is that Tampa would risk missing out on snagging Berry, who may not slip past Kansas City. However, the Bucs could in this scenario take CB Haden, or DE Morgan, whichever is the best available choice. But the good news is that the team will snag extra draft picks.
Considering the Bucs are quiet on the FA front and have serious needs at five positions at best (DT, WR, S, CB, DE), the trade-down-get-more-picks plan has merit. That’s only if both Suh and McCoy are gone, let’s just make that clear.

I could see either Okung or McCoy going to the Bucs...
…but I’d say go DT in this relatively “deep” OT draft.
I am pretty sure OT is not high on the list.

I thought about taking OT as well but...
…the fans over at Buc’em chewed me a new one arguing that the needs at DT were way higher than OT.
For the most part the Bucs have decent OT talent. The biggest issue is the RT Trueblood who keeps getting into on-field personal foul problems. Anger management issues by the look o things. If the Bucs can get a ROT to replace him that would be vera good. And you can get Right Tackles in the mid-rounds…

McWeak
McBust declines to try to top his weak Combine bench of 23 reps as promised. Why am I not surprised?
