2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 9

The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft is underway, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. Brian Galliford, lead blogger at SB Nation's Buffalo Bills blog, Buffalo Rumblings, checks in to make the ninth overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!

With the ninth overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Buffalo Bills have selected Jimmy Clausen, quarterback, Notre Dame.

Brian Galliford says: GM Buddy Nix is preparing to run his first draft as the lead man in Buffalo, and his first pick is incredibly important - hit on it, and he's an instant celebrity; miss, and he's the latest in a long line of less-than-stellar decision-makers in Orchard Park. That's not fair, but that's exactly how it'll go down.

Jimmy Clausen's availability here makes Nix's decision easy. Or, rather, it makes my job easy in pretending to be Nix. Only Detroit has been on the outside looking in at playoff football as long as the Bills (ten years), and the chief reason behind that is the lack of a franchise quarterback. Reviews are mixed on Clausen, and he's not as popular amongst NFL talent evaluators as he could be, but Buffalo's need at QB is so huge that they almost have to roll the dice here. (Unless they want to toss twice and target a certain Mr. Tebow in round two.)

I have no idea if the Bills like Clausen, and that's probably a good thing. I, personally, like Clausen - for a junior entrant, I think his game has a solid amount of polish, and I think his oft-criticized intangibles are slightly underrated. This is not a prospect I want to simply hand the starting job to, but if he beats out Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brian Brohm in an even-playing-field competition, he'll have at least earned his keep.

One thing is certain: whenever Nix gets his QB, I'll feel pretty good about it. This is a man who was with a Chargers organization that drafted Drew Brees and Eli Manning - who was then flipped for Philip Rivers - during his tenure as Assistant GM. He was there for the selection of Charlie Whitehurst, who is apparently the greatest quarterback ever according to Pete Carroll. The man knows talent, and he seems to have good luck with quarterbacks. For the sake of Buffalo's sanity, I hope that lucky streak continues. I think it's got a good chance of continuing if Clausen is his man.

Mocking Dan reacts: It's become fairly obvious that the Bills are going to add a quarterback at some point this off-season, whether it's a veteran or a draft pick. The biggest issue with drafting a quarterback is that Buffalo still needs pieces to add to its 3-4 defense. A defensive tackle is a big-time need. Even though this would be a reach for Dan Williams, the nose tackle is the anchor of the defense and shouldn't be underscored. An offensive tackle is also a big need, and the second-round quality is nowhere near as good as the first-round quality.

Still, those quarterbacks on Buffalo have been mostly below average. Clausen would be the centerpiece of the offense and give the franchise its much-needed face.

Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - C.J. Spiller/RB/Clemson, 2 - Derrick Morgan/DE/Georgia Tech, 3 - Dez Bryant/WR/Oklahoma State, 4 - Joe Haden/CB/Florida, 5 - Earl Thomas/S/Texas

Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of the Clausen-to-Buffalo pick? Please be sure to check out Buffalo Rumblings for all of your Bills needs.

Yes, but you could say that they needed a QB if they drafted an LT, NT or OLB. Fact is the Bills need pieces. Since it’s a QB league – and if Nix likes Clausen – I say that pick would be in the Bills best interest.

Well done, Brian! If that is to happen in the real draft I will be thrilled.

Agree

I don’t think there is a pick that would make me happier. Except maybe Suh, but I have inside sources that feel it’s pretty unlikely that Suh falls to pick 9.

Nice pick Brian!

And nice job on the write up too. I’ve been in full blown Bulaga-mode for awhile, but Clausen was available and I’m warming up to this possibility. Kudos to Dan for the counterpoint as well. I agree, if Clausen doesn’t make it to us I fully expect our first two picks to be big men.

As usual a wonderful write up Brian. Buffalo Rumblings, best blog out there.

Quite possibly the best

football blog.

But blazersedge is the best and it’s not even close. Us Blazer fans are completely crazy, but in a good way.

Nice pick for the Bills. Doubt he will be available at 9, but since everyone in the Seahawks front office decided it was a good idea to get high prior to the draft and take Mays at 6, he is here in this mock.

Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!

Classic?

We’ve never seen him draft before.

Talents that I covet:

Good pick

I ain’t a Buffalo fan, but it’d be nice to see them get back to elite level after all these years.

Clausen I think is far and away the best QB in the draft..and to get that at #9 is an incredible value.

There's time for NTs

Williams, Terrence Cody, Cam Thomas, Torrell Troup, Jay Ross, Linval Joseph….no need to reach if you can grab someone.

I’m not a Clausen fan, but the pick makes sense. Bulaga would be the no-brainer if Oakland had taken someone else. They’ll just need to shore up the line with the 2nd round pick…whoever is the QB is going to need to stay upright.

by TexansDC on Mar 26, 2010 10:08 PM EDT reply actions

That's a very good question

If both Bulaga & Claussen are both there, I think Nix goes with Claussen. I think that if Nix likes Claussen enough to take him, then it’s going to be him no matter who drops to us (Maybe with the exception of Okung)

Rome wasn't built in a day but there was a plan.

by keysh67 on Mar 27, 2010 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Excellent pick. The Bills cannot pass on a QB this talented.

I know they still have a ton of holes, but it would be foolish to pass Clausen by for an LT or NT.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 26, 2010 11:02 PM EDT reply actions

Assuming you believe he is talented.

He is just the next overhyped undertalented ND QB IMO.

by Flounder69 on Mar 27, 2010 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions

and that's your opinion but...

but have you seen the buffalo QB stable recently? To Bryan’s point, I don’t think that Nix can pass on the opportunity if he thinks Claussen has the potential to be a starting caliber QB

Rome wasn't built in a day but there was a plan.

by keysh67 on Mar 27, 2010 9:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Solid pick Brian, great explanation. I feel anyways a NT can be available later in the draft considering this is the “deepest” dt draft ever.

I was born in Buffalo, and NO, it's not a suburb of New York City

by Ghetts on Mar 26, 2010 11:09 PM EDT reply actions

I’ve been of this mind for a while, myself. Clausen can’t be passed on, and they can get prospects for the other positions further down. If he isn’t there, get Dan Williams right off, but if he is, I say grab him.

by MadmanJack on Mar 27, 2010 12:50 AM EDT reply actions

The way it played out.

With Okung and Bulaga off the board. I’m OK with it.

I’m not sold on Trent Williams,or Anthony Davis and think Clausen is a better prospect than both. If this is how it plays out, I hope OBD has some LT prospects they like in the 2-3 rounds.

There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.

by The Buffalo Kid on Mar 27, 2010 1:08 AM EDT reply actions

I definitely agree on the Okung part but I’m wishywashy on Bulaga, I think the guy is real solid but if there are doubts that is can only become a dominant RT then maybe he is too much of a reach, especially if Nix thinks that Claussen could have the potential to be the “one”

Rome wasn't built in a day but there was a plan.

by keysh67 on Mar 27, 2010 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly, in this situation, he fills both one of our Needs, and the BPA desire of a fan base

And with all the NTs still on the board, we could always move up for one.

Nix and Chan, the new Cheech and Chong of the Bills, hopefully they will be as successful in business as they were, and not so much the drug fueled comedy act....

Very good pick if the Bills decide to go this way. It would lift the Franchise and put people into seats, make more money for the Bills. I believe that Jimmy is NFL made ready, I actually like him much better than Bradford

Geez, Brian, the division’s tough enough without the Bills adding a franchise quarterback.

Seriously though, great pick.

Unless Clausen actually does become a Bill, I think I’ll always like Sanchez better than Clausen. So don’t worry – you’re in good hands.

necessary pick

The Bills haven’t had a legitimate QB since Kelly. NT’s can be had later in the draft as well as tackles. I’m not completely sold that D. Bell isn’t a left tackle and the Bills need to continue to bring him along. I really would have liked to see him get a full year last year to further his development.

by gatornation on Mar 27, 2010 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

I believe they go OT here.

by Yankees10 on Mar 27, 2010 11:54 AM EDT reply actions

Agree

By no means am I a bills fan but putting a young QB behind that offensive line would just make it harder for him to succeed. I could see the Bills going with Clausen, I’m not high on him but I understand why they would do it and especially if the OT’s they want are off the board which is a real possibility, I just believe if a team is going to go with a rookie QB they need to put a talented team, most importantly a good O-line, to help him along. They do need to address their Defensive personnel but in a deep draft like this they can wait on that.

by andrew21 on Mar 27, 2010 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the Bills definitely need O-Line help. I think this is a case of more BPA than need. there are guys they can get too as a LT that can work their way into the starting lineup by midseason that can be gotten in the 2nd round.

A QB can’t throw the ball when he’s on his back, ask David Carr what that’s like.

Matt Stafford seems to be fine, and he’s got Jeff Sackus blocking for him.

Besides, we have three tackling dummies ahead of him to take the early season blows

I bet if this pick happened/s we would see Claussen the last 4-8 games of the season while Trent, Fitz, and Brohm take the early season beatings.
