2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 10

The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft is underway, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. The SB Nation Jacksonville Jaguars blog Big Cat Country checks in to make the 10th overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sirs!

With the 10th overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars have selected Joe Haden, CB, Florida.

Big Cat Country says: The Jaguars are stuck between a rock and a hard place at the No. 10 spot. They can hope a player takes a draft day slide, like Eugene Monroe did last year. However, the chances of Eric Berry or Jimmy Clausen being there at  No. 10 are fairly slim.

Although Joe Haden is the best available player at this point, it is always better to match value and need. Rashean Mathis still has enough left in the tank, and Derek Cox played well enough last year. Earl Thomas would make more sense from a need standpoint, but what is he worth the No. 10 pick overall?

Derrick Morgan's unimpressive pro day and Jason Pierre-Paul's extreme boom-bust potential, coupled with Aaron Kampman's signing, make taking a DE less of an attractive option.

Honestly, at this point, the Jaguars will be looking to trade down and get more picks. With only six picks in a draft this loaded, it's a necessity. With two 3-4 teams picking after them, perhaps a team with its eye on Tennessee DT Dan Williams will want to jump the Broncos or Dolphins. Another possibility is Clemson RB C.J. Spiller.

Mocking Dan reacts: This was a surprising pick. So surprising that when I wrote it up I initially had Derrick Morgan written down as the pick. Whoops!

Even with Kampman, the pass rush needs more talent. That's how inept Jacksonville's current group of pass rushers have been. Jacksonville is a team with several pressing needs. Cornerback is certainly not one of them. I understand why a team like Jacksonville would be gun shy about Thomas after Reggie Nelson has regressed. But Thomas has the skills to be as good as Eric Berry.

Haden is a good value pick. He just might not be the right one.

Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - C.J. Spiller/RB/Clemson, 2 - Dez Bryant/WR/Oklahoma State, 3 - Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech, 4 - Earl Thomas/S/Texas. 5 -Everson Griffen, DE, USC

Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of the Haden-to-Jacksonville pick? Please be sure to check out Big Cat Country for all of your Jaguars needs.

I'm just not sure about this schizo pick.

The Jag fans keep raving about Derek Cox’s play at CB, and Mathis is an established CB, so where does Haden go?
Now if someone says that Mathis is missing too many games and his game is slipping, okay, I’ll buy that. If they then say he will go to Safety and solidify that spot, hmmmm that’s a litlle harder sell.

I agree with Dan, I mocked them Earl Thomas at FS. I still think that is the best long term value for them. I don’t like any of the DEs at # 10. If they are able to trade down…….? The DEs look a lot better around # 15 or later.

You dont think Derrick Morgan is worth a top 10 pick?

by Yankees10 on Mar 27, 2010 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

I think the biggest reason that Jaguar fans shy away from Morgan

Is because he looks so similar to what Derrick Harvey looked like coming out. Jaguar fans aren’t exactly upset with Harvey’s play, a lot think he’s slowly turning into a defensive force and can be a great player, but the generally accepted thought is that the Jags gave up way too much in the trade to get him and he’s taking too long to develop.

Jaguar fans are nervous that by taking Derrick Morgan we’re basically making an investment in a player that wont have much of an impact until year 3. I know Mocking Dan is one who believes Morgan can come in and have 10+ sacks in his rookie year, but for Jaguar fans that have watched him, he looks very Harvey-esque and that scares us a little.

NO.

The more I think about him and remember what I have seen the less I like him for the Jags. I like Carlos Dunlap better for Jax. More upside as a pass rusher.

Even though everyone loves him for a 3-4

Brandon Graham is the one I’d most love to see as a contributor for the Jacksonville pass rush.

You would rather have Dunlap over Morgan? Thats suprising considering Dunlap has HUGE bust potential in most peoples opinion.

You think Jacksonville needs 2 Derrick Harvey’s?

Exactly what I was thinking

He'll go where Reggie Nelson is

The 2010 New York Mets: Maybe it's the Phillies' turn to have 95% of its roster on the DL

The 2009 New England Patriots: At least we got our division title back

The 2009-10 New Jersey Devils: Allergic to second periods

I was definitely thinking Thomas or McClain or Weatherspoon (early, but no one can deny his talent)

Jags fans have been talking about how CB was good for them. McClain and Thomas are good plus they fill a hole.

I guess since they passed on Tebow at 10…he won’t be there by 15.

I think Earl Thomas offers better versatility depending on what they want to do

with Mathis.

But Haden is THE CB in this draft, so its hard to argue with it.

I dunno if they should be discouraged by the past (Harvey) and not draft a DE. I think Derrick Morgan is a top 5 talent and he’s a complete DE. With Knighton and Morgan, that’s a nice nucleus for the DL’s for the Jags, and the secondary can feed off that (Mathis would look better out there if they could rush the passer…maybe Reggie Nelson too!?…probably not).

Tough to argue with this one. But I think there’s better fits for the Jags.

I’m guessing that if they draft Haden they would move Mathis to FS, because Nelson is just horrible and Cox looks like he is the real deal.

NOT AT ALL!

He is a 3rd round worth pick for GM Gene Smith…

Great; great BAP pick!

The comment about the trade down

makes a lot of sense for the Jags, especially if Haden is still on the board at #10: Pittsburgh, Houston, and Baltimore for starters should be interested, so there’s at least some possibility they could find a team willing to make the trade. A decent rush end should still be available later in the 1st.

by Mr. X on Mar 27, 2010 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

No doubt about it

The Jaguars want to and will trade down if given the opportunity. I think they’re in a pretty decent position to do so too. If Haden, McClain, Spiller, Clausen, Morgan or Berry are there at 10, there’s definite reason to believe that they’ll receive trade offers. In my opinion, Berry is the only one out of those that is worth taking at 10.

B

Some times picking the best player is the best choice instead taking a leap of faith for a position you need. And I am not high on them picking up another DE either, signing Kapman was good enough for now.

I wouldnt go that far

You dont want to be the Lions and pick a WR, 9 drafts in a row.
