2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 13
The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft is underway, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. Fooch, lead blogger at SB Nation's San Francisco 49ers blog, Niners Nation, checks in to make the No. 13 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!
With the No. 13 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the San Francisco 49ers have selected Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma.
Fooch says: The breakdown of this draft removed several distinct possibilities for the 49ers and put them in a position where they might potentially trade back from the 13th pick. However, the team has sufficient needs that they might be able to meet at 13. The biggest concern last season surrounded the offensive line. The 49ers o-line has talented players like Joe Staley and Eric Heitmann, and has a young up-and-comer in Chilo Rachal. However, the right tackle position has been a bit of an abyss aside from Joe Staley’s rookie season.
OT Trent Williams is a guy who brings up some fairly divergent opinions among 49ers fans. Some love him, some hate him, and some are mildly indifferent. Nonetheless, he is a big bodied offensive tackle that would get a shot to compete for the starting right tackle position from day 1. Among mock drafts, the most common selection for the 49ers has been Trent Williams at #13. Whether it’s an inspiring pick is one thing, but it certainly has the potential to fill a need.
Probably the most common alternate pick at this spot is Clemson RB C.J. Spiller. The 49ers have talent on offense, but Spiller could provide big-time playmaking skills both on offense and special teams. The 49ers return units were fairly abysmal for much of last season and Spiller could step in to start in the return game, while providing a unique option at running back behind Frank Gore and Glen Coffee.
Mocking Dan reacts: I love this pick. If you need reason to love it as well, watch any Oklahoma games from 2008. When Williams played right tackle, there was arguably no better offensive lineman in the country. Right tackle might not be a sexy pick, but for a team on the verge, it's a great one.
Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - C.J. Spiller/RB/Clemson, 2 - Derrick Morgan/DE/Georgia Tech, 3 - Dez Bryant/WR/Oklahoma State, 4 - Everson Griffen/DE/USC, 5 - Jermaine Gresham/TE/Oklahoma
Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of the Williams-to-San Francisco pick? Please be sure to check out Niners Nation for all of your 49ers needs.

He fills an immediate need at Right Tackle, and may be able to take over at Left Tackle.
He probably would be available at # 17 too, but I don’t see anything else that the Niners might value/need more than a very good RT.
while providing a unique option at running back behind Frank Gore and Glen Coffee.
Spiller would not be behind Cofee.

I don’t understand why this pick isn’t Anthony Davis. He had a MUCH better year than Williams, has more potential, and could play LT if Staley got hurt.

because
he looked really slow and fat in the combine. His footwork wasn’t up to stratch and he looked lathargic after running afew drills.
Also his agent, the night before his pro day workout, sent a message to the scouts+coaches who were already in the area that he was “ill” (ie super fat).
He also is reported to have had really bad interviews.
So the guy (Davis) is immensly talented but has questionable motivation and intellegence and therefore Williams becomes a smart pick… plus at RT Williams was a beast.

So you put all of a prospect’s stock in the combine?

Well where in hell did i say that?
all i answered was what made Davis’s stock to suffer. Plus the combine is a way to contexualize a player’s speed in regards to other prospects. So Davis’s tape was good BUT compared to the other players he looked slow and lathargic. The combine is important for showing the coaches close-up how he relates to other players they have in their squad (and other similarly rated prospects).
Plus interviews and the way a player takes to the combine and pro days show either his willingness to put time into the gym and or ability to take coaching (intellegence in regards to learning sprinting technique etc). These are all important checks and balances one takes into account regarding a players gametape.
Combine is an important part of scouting… but nowhere did i say or allude to the position that the combine is the be-all and end-all of scouting.

There is no way in HELL
Anthony Davis could play LT. His kick slide blows goats and he has no drive.
Gimme 1 round!

I probably would take Dez Bryant if he falls here. Trent Williams could be there at #17
"Smokescreen."
Youre kidding right
Another wide out represented by Eugene Parker. I think the Niners are set after getting Crabtree last year. You don;t want to pay 2 different wideouts top 15 money. Its just not a smart business decision

Great pick Fooch, if we are not trading up for Berry, I ope we are not reaching for Spiller. When 17 comes around he should be there.

If thsi is suppose to resemble the move of the FO, I would doubt Graham is being considered at all. There was a bigger question mark about the pass rush before last season and there is only a question mark about our PR out of the Nickel, I doubt Graham would even be considered.
