2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 14

The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft is underway, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. John Morgan, lead blogger at SB Nation's Seattle Seahawks blog, Field Gulls, checks in again to make the No. 14 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!

With the No. 14 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Seattle Seahawks have selected C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson.

John Morgan says: Seattle invested quite a bit in a quarterback that struggles perceiving pressure and protecting the football. Charlie Whitehurst is 27, but the Seahawks organization considers him part of their draft class. Whitehurst must first beat out Matt Hasselbeck to start, and if he does not, and does not see significant snaps filling in for an injured Hasselbeck, he will have a one year window to beat out whatever rookie Seattle brings in.

Despite the short schedule, Seattle wants either or both Hasselbeck and Whitehurst to succeed. They want to win now, and need to win now with one of those two quarterbacks. Hasselbeck has a below average arm that can become a liability when he is injured. He isn’t broken, but his margin of injury is very thin. When he is banged up, the underneath pass becomes his primary weapon. As Whitehurst attempts to overcome his crippling pocket presence, an underneath threat could help him learn to outlet out of pressure.

C.J. Spiller would be as much receiver as running back in Seattle’s offense. He would be worked in like Ray Rice, but with lower ceiling for carries. Spiller would get about 200 touches his rookie year, playing lightning in a tempest in a teapot thunder and lightning attack. Justin Forsett would receive about 250 carries, split more towards running the ball. An additional back would be added for short yardage and to grind out leads in the fourth.

Spiller would also add value as a return man. In my eyes, he doesn’t have true three-down potential, but Pete Carroll believes in a running back committee and I respect him for it. Forsett is an able rusher, but would likely be beaten down and reduced by a full-time gig. Seattle adds Spiller, dramatically improves their return game, adds another low-difficulty/high-value outlet receiver for a pair of quarterbacks in need, and improves and protects their running game.

Mocking Dan reacts: If Seattle wants to win now, taking a running back is the position to go after. A running back can jump into the mix immediately and be a factor. Spiller, in particular, can be a difference maker. He would allow Seattle to offer tricky formations by splitting him out wide while Forsett is lined up in the backfield.

And Spiller's ability as a return man shouldn't be brushed aside. He is the kind of player that can always give his team good field position and be a threat to score a touchdown.

Offensive tackle may be as pressing of a need as running back for Seattle. But don't be shocked when new offensive line coach Alex Gibbs waits until later in the draft to address it.

Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Derrick Morgan/DE/Georgia Tech, 2 - Dez Bryant/WR/Oklahoma State, 3 - Everson Griffen/DE/USC, 4 - Jermaine Gresham/TE/Oklahoma 5 - Anthony Davis/OT/Rutgers

Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of the Spiller-to-Seattle pick? Please be sure to check out Field Gulls for all of your Seahawks needs.

Being a Houston fan, I know how Alex Gibbs works

but this line needs help. Charles Brown would’ve been a better pick, imo.

The line does need help

but this pick was fine; it was the Mays one at #6 that made no sense, especially with Bulaga still on the board at that point.

I didn't say it was a bad pick

but I’d prefer to have that LT. Brown’s a great fit for the zone-blocking scheme.

the line isn’t great but it is solid. there are definite needs on that line, but I look at RB as being a bigger need. that running game would be anemic behind the NFC pro bowl O-Line.

You call Seattle’s line solid? Wow they have been horrible not one good (or healthy) piece among them. Spillers great but to it’s like when teams get their “franchise” QB before their franchise LT this would be stupid.

Love this pick.

We have alot of help on the line, agreed with TexansDC above… But this is an offense that lacks explosiveness and homeruns threats. This my fellow mockers, is what Seattle needs to become a threat for explosive plays and a momentum shifting offense. Great pick.

B

Spiller is going to be a good player in the NFL, I’m sure he’s going to find a great niche as a receiving and change of pace ‘speed’ back in the Seattle committee. But what I don’t get is the idea of drafting a committee back in the first round. Spiller isn’t an ever down guy, he’s not a workhorse, he looks like he’s going to be a Reggie Bush / Darren Sproles kind of player..and you can find those good receiving backs in the later rounds. I’d go in a different direction here, maybe OL, maybe Derrick Morgan…hell maybe try and trade away Branch for something and take Dez.

this is drafting more towards need. i give it a B too. solid pick, could have been better…but seattle needs some sort of offensive threat. they have posession receivers (like Hoosh) and an anemic running game. a guy like spiller makes defenses respect him. I dunno if a guy in the later rounds can have an impact and change the defensive gameplan like spiller can.

I kinda agree

With the Reggie Bush comparison, and i would even be happy if they got an OLmen here and then picked up a back in the 2nd with the 60 pick. Tate from Auburn looks like he has potential to be a quality NFL back, Joe McKnight will possibly be available at 60. Theres alot of ways to go, but this is the best player on the board so i cant really complain if my team took Spiller here.

Davis and Campbell were still available. Bad pick

Please, the Alex Gibbs myth of ONLY drafting O Linemen in the later rounds is not true.

Teams he coached the O line drafted linemen in the first three rounds around the average of other teams. His teams did draft players in the first round to play on the O line.
Look at the Cowboys if you want to see a team that has not drafted a lineman in the first round in over fifteen years. Alex Gibbs did not coach there.

Who said that Gibbs ONLY drafts linemen in the later rounds?

Talents that I covet:

Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Sam Bradford, Mike Iupati, Golden Tate, Earl Thomas, and Freddie Barnes

Sorry, this is a poor pick. # 14 for a Kick Returner and change of pace back?

Forsett has most of the same skill set as Spiller. The Seahawks need a big back to complement him. Derrick Morgan makes a lot of sense here.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 28, 2010 8:01 PM EDT reply actions

Big back?

Like say Jonathan Dwyer or Toby Gerhart at pick 60?

by TexansDC on Mar 28, 2010 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Gerhart would be good at # 60.

Maybe a little early, but since Seattle does not have a third round pick this year they don’t have much choice.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 29, 2010 8:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Why do they need a big guy?

I’ve posted this on the ‘Hawks blog before. The “thunder and lightning” thing is in vogue, but if you want a committee in the backfield to reduce wear and tear then a small guy takes carries too. I’d be down with lightning and lightning (or maybe quicksilver and lightning, since Force is elusive and quick but not top-end fast).

by thebyron on Apr 9, 2010 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Somehow, I could see them taking Dez Bryant, given the look they took at Brandon Marshall.
Spiller is a nice pick though.
