2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 15
The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft is underway, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. CJ Mulrain, a blogger at SB Nation's New York Giants blog, Big Blue View, checks in to make the No. 15 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!
With the No. 15 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the New York Giants have selected Derrick Morgan, defensive end, Georgia Tech.
CJ Mulrain says: The Giants biggest need in this draft is at linebacker, but with Rolando McClain off the board, there just aren't any linebackers worthy of being taken with the 15th pick. With the recent news that Kenny Phillips likely won't be ready for training camp (and really, who knows if he'll ever be fully healthy again), I would have considered a safety here had Earl Thomas fallen. DT Brian Price is also an option, but when it comes down to it, Morgan is just a better player.
The Giants have a bunch of needs on defense, and with the way this draft has gone, Derrick Morgan is simply the best defensive player left on the board. Morgan is a top 10 talent who has dropped because of needs by the teams picking ahead of the Giants, not because of doubts about his abilities. As the Giants proved when they won the Super Bowl 2 years ago, you can never have too many pass rushers. And with the uncertainty regarding Osi Umenyiora's future with the team hanging in the air, adding a talented young pass rusher who also can defend the run like Morgan makes a lot of sense.
Mocking Dan reacts: Ideally, the Giants probably really want McClain or Thomas to fall to them. But since they're gone, and Morgan seems to be the best defensive player available, this is a good pick. Morgan can contribute immediately and is a three-down defensive end.
Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Dez Bryant/WR/Oklahoma State, 2 - Everson Griffen/DE/USC, 3 - Jermaine Gresham/TE/Oklahoma 4 - Anthony Davis/OT/Rutgers 5 - Sergio Kindle/OLB/Texas
Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of the Giants' pick of Morgan? Please be sure to check out Big Blue View for all of your Giants needs.

Good choice
in the absence of McClain. In reality, I suspect he would last past #5, rather than going to KC as he did here. If he was still around in the #9-10 range, what are the chances the Giants would try to trade up to go after him?
they would not likely
trade up. In such a deep draft, Jerry Reese, the GM likes to keep his picks. They’d definitely consider trading down tho…..
If McClain/Thomas/Morgan are gone, I’d hope that Reese trades down far enough to pick up maybe another 2nd or 3rd rounder and still be in position to pick up Sean Weatherspoon. that’d be pretty damn sick. I wouldn’t consider brian price to be a great choice at 15, but wouldn’t mind him either…
Jerry Reese = Omar Minaya?

Quick question:
Why would the Giants want McClain, when he seems better suited for 3-4, and Sean Witherspoon is more of a 4-3 LB?
Talents that I covet:
Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Sam Bradford, Mike Iupati, Golden Tate, Earl Thomas, and Freddie Barnes
McClain
is plain and simple the best middle linebacker on the board. He is far superior in skills to anyone else available. Weatherspoon is really an outside linebacker who ‘can’ play in the middle. That’s not really ideal at 15. If the Giants can’t get McClain the thinking is they take the best defensive player available, and get a ‘pure’ middle linebacker somewhere in rounds 2-4.

Exactly
the Eagles and Omar Gaither are a shining example of what an outside backer who ‘can’ play in the middle looks like.

"pure middle LB"
HAHA do you even know which direction your own team is headed in defensively? I dont have time to explain it, but it involves a new D coordinator and a scheme called the tampa 2.
IMO
Foil....
YOU are the one that doesn’t know what direction our team is in.
Its never been set they’ve been running the Tampa two, so uh…yea. Dead that idea, cuz its wrong.

Ok..
so if you don’t care who the DC is…the Giants most definitely are not running a Tampa 2.
Not in the NFC East they aren’t….

McClain is not just a 3-4 LB
Especially not just cuz he said so.
He didn’t even say that either..he said he played in a 3-4 in college…which anyone who watched college FB could’ve told Rolando.
Sean Weatherspoon is a LB in a 4-3, yes. Which if you play Madden, you can switch your OLB’s to MLB and usually they’re better if they faster.
Doesn’t work that way in real life. Weatherspoon’s faults, like negotiating traffic and gap discipline..are exactly the sorts of things a MLB MUST HAVE.
“Negotiating traffic and gap discipline” are things Ro McClain knows…which is why he’s the ideal fit.
That, and he’s a hell of an athlete for a dude his size.

Good Choice,
Good, because then Osi could be possibly traded, maybe for a couple of picks.
eff you we winning anyway
A.I. IS BACKKKKKKK
We love
the trade down scenario over at Big Blue View … if McClain is gone. But, what do we know?

Meh, with Price and Davis still there…

Anthony Davis is a problem
Every Rutgers game I’ve watched since he’s been there (a lot) they bring up that maturity word. The last thing that Tom Coughlin wants is a petulant child.

McClain is overrated especially to the Gmen
Dan said “ideally McClain will fall to them”, I disagree. He’s really not even a scheme fit for them anyways, and Morgan is a way better player and a perfect fit for them.
Reis is a great GM because he doesnt reach, and he’s not dumb. This pick summarizes that perfectly.
IMO
^read above Foil...
While yes, Morgan is a great fit.
McClain is too. The dude is the best MLB in the draft. There’s nothing about him that says he’s not a good fit.
All the evidence is to the contrary…McClain to the Giant quite possibly is the best need pick for any team in the draft (may be a bit of homerism there….)
I hate the thought of the Giants trading up and I highly doubt they do, but they are rumored to be enamored with McClain…and they may indeed trade up for him.
Jerry Reese is SMART because he lets players like McClain fall directly into his lap. He did it in 2009 when 3 players he would/could’ve taken at #29, he got in the 1st 2 rounds.

Come on FB
You really have a boner for McClain too apparently. You telling me you would take him over Morgan if both were on the board?
IMO
Are you serious?
A DE..who while I’d love to have..when we have Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora (who’s not being traded BTW) and Matthias Kiwaunuka?
And Jonathon Goff or Gerris “IR” Wilkinson is our MLB’s?
So…DE when we have 3 Pro Bowl calbier dudes…or MLB when we aren’t sure who is the starter.
Makes sense to me!

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 29, 2010 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions
I shouldnt have to make sense of that
You know that putting pressure with your front 4 is very important. It becomes extremely important playing the two deep stuff.
Look I realize that you want the sexy ILB, but Morgan is a beast and if Osi is a situational pass rusher then it couldnt hurt to have another.
IMO
Again..Morgan is a fine pick
But….4th DE (or 4th DT…) …vs Starting MLB?
Fix Depth? or fix gaping hole?
Piss off Osi by getting another DE? Or get what Osi needs (a MLB who takes control of the D like Pierce)

The only scheme the Giants run, is one that will fit the team.
Fewell favors zone coverages in his secondary…but as for the front 7…basically all they say is it will be “aggressive”.
Well…while Bill Sheridan didn’t even run a defense, he was just an idiot…
Spagnuolo ran an “aggressive defense’”. McClain ran an “aggressive defense” at Bama too.
And you haven’t even given me a reason why he’s a bad fit either!!
EJ Henderson is slow as molasses and runs the Tampa 2 for Minnesota
DWTDD
by FreeBradshaw on Mar 29, 2010 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Thats true EJ is slow
Look Im not saying McClain would suck for the Gmen, Im just saying that I dont think its a prudent pick. IMO Spoon, Morgan, or Price are better players and better fits
IMO
and I highly doubt that...
McClain is basically a young Antonio Pierce..except instead of having the athleticism of a sumo wretler (Pierce…) McClain actually looks like a LB.
Weatherspoon is a OLB. Brian Price gets engulfed by NFL sized OG’s.
Morgan is a fine pick.
But to me…a 4th DE <<<<<<<<< Starting MLB.
Osi is not a situational pass rusher. He was relegated to that last year because of his ACL injury really sapped his power last year.
Osi, Tuck and Kiwi will be the rotation. If all area healthy..they will feed.
The Giants pick is McClain…then its everyone else if he ain’t there. Its about as open and shut..should he fall, as any pick in 2010.

sleep? I didn't really wake up, he's always been 'meh'...
I’d rather have Lamarr Houston in the 2nd.
That’s what also plays into it. Who can we get later. McClain is the only MLB in the draft worth it at #15. All the others would be in competition with Goff and Wilkinson.
